2023-02-14drm/vmwgfx: Stop using raw ttm_buffer_object'sZack Rusin1-18/+20
Various bits of the driver used raw ttm_buffer_object instead of the driver specific vmw_bo object. All those places used to duplicate the mapped bo caching policy of vmw_bo. Instead of duplicating all of that code and special casing various functions to work both with vmw_bo and raw ttm_buffer_object's unify the buffer object handling code. As part of that work fix the naming of bo's, e.g. insted of generic backup use 'guest_memory' because that's what it really is. All of it makes the driver easier to maintain and the code easier to read. Saves 100+ loc as well. 2023-02-14drm/vmwgfx: Rename vmw_buffer_object to vmw_boZack Rusin1-3/+4
The rest of the drivers which are using ttm have mostly standardized on driver_prefix_bo as the name for subclasses of the TTM buffer object. Make vmwgfx match the rest of the drivers and follow the same naming semantics. This is especially clear given that the name of the file in which the object was defined is vmw_bo.c. 2021-12-16drm/vmwgfx: Remove unused compile optionsZack Rusin1-9/+3
Before the driver had screen targets support we had to disable explicit bringup of its infrastructure because it was breaking screen objects support. Since the implementation of screen targets landed there hasn't been a reason to explicitly disable it and the options were never used. Remove of all that unused code. 2021-12-09drm/vmwgfx: Remove usage of MOBFMT_RANGEZack Rusin1-6/+0
Using MOBFMT_RANGE in the early days of guest backed objects was a major performance win but that has changed a lot since. There's no more a performance reason to use MOBFMT_RANGE. The device can/will still profit from the pages being contiguous but marking them as MOBFMT_RANGE no longer matters. Benchmarks (e.g. heaven, valley) show that creating page tables for mob memory is actually faster than using mobfmt ranges. 2021-12-09drm/vmwgfx: Remove the dedicated memory accountingZack Rusin1-4/+3
vmwgfx shared very elaborate memory accounting with ttm. It was moved from ttm to vmwgfx in change f07069da6b4c ("drm/ttm: move memory accounting into vmwgfx v4") but because of complexity it was hard to maintain. Some parts of the code weren't freeing memory correctly and some were missing accounting all together. While those would be fairly easy to fix the fundamental reason for memory accounting in the driver was the ability to invoke shrinker which is part of TTM code as well (with support for unified memory hopefully coming soon). That meant that vmwgfx had a lot of code that was either unused or duplicating code from TTM. Removing this code also prevents excessive calls to global swapout which were common during memory pressure because both vmwgfx and TTM would invoke the shrinker when memory usage reached half of RAM. 2021-06-16drm/vmwgfx: Fix a bad merge in otable batch takedownZack Rusin1-1/+0
Change 2ef4fb92363c ("drm/vmwgfx: Make sure bo's are unpinned before putting them back") caused a conflict in one of the drm trees and the merge commit 68a32ba14177 ("Merge tag 'drm-next-2021-04-28' of git://anongit.freedesktop.org/drm/drm") accidently re-added code that the original change was removing. Fixed by removing the incorrect buffer unpin - it has already been unpinned two lines above. 2021-06-16drm/vmwgfx: Update device headersZack Rusin1-18/+18
Historically our device headers have been forked versions of the internal device headers, this has made maintaining them a bit of a burden. To fix the situation, going forward, the device headers will be verbatim copies of the internal headers. To do that the driver code has to be adapted to use pristine device headers. This will make future update to the device headers trivial and automatic. 2021-04-14drm/vmwgfx: Make sure bo's are unpinned before putting them backZack Rusin1-4/+14
During cotable resize we pin the backup buffer to make sure the trylock doesn't fail. We were never unpinning the backup buffer resulting in every subsequent cotable resize trying to release a pinned bo. After we copy the old backup to the new we can release the pin. Mob's are always pinned so we just have to make sure we unpin them before releasing them. In particular vmw_buffer_object, which is internally often pinned on creation wasn't unpinned on destruction and none of the internal MOB buffers were unpinned before being put back. Technically this existed for a long time but commit 57fcd550eb15 ("drm/ttm: Warn on pinning without holding a reference") introduced a WARN_ON which was filling up the kernel logs rather quickly. Quite frankly internal usage of vmw_buffer_object and in general pinning needs to be refactored in vmwgfx but for now this makes it work. Lets try to cleanup the usage of the term FIFO which we used for both our MMIO based cmd queue processing and for general command processing which could have been using command buffers interface. We're going to rename the functions which are processing commands (and work either via MMIO or command buffers) as _cmd_ and functions which operate on the MMIO based commands as FIFO to match the SVGA device naming. 2019-01-28drm/vmwgfx: Replace ttm_bo_unref with ttm_bo_putThomas Zimmermann1-7/+14
The function ttm_bo_put releases a reference to a TTM buffer object. The function's name is more aligned to the Linux kernel convention of naming ref-counting function _get and _put. A call to ttm_bo_unref takes the address of the TTM BO object's pointer and clears the pointer's value to NULL. This is not necessary in most cases and sometimes even worked around by the calling code. A call to ttm_bo_put only releases the reference without clearing the pointer. In places where is might be necessary, the current behaviour of cleaning the pointer is kept. This patch address the following underlying issues with SurfaceDMA * SurfaceDMA command does not work in a 2D VM, but we can wrap a proxy surface around the same DMA buffer and use the SurfaceCopy command which does work in a 2D VM. * Wrapping a DMA buffer with a proxy surface also gives us an added optimization path for the case when the DMA buf dimensions match the mode. In this case, the DMA buf can be pinned as the display surface, saving an extra copy. This commit reworks device initialization so that we always enable the FIFO at driver load, deferring SVGA enable until either first modeset or fbdev enable. This should always leave the fifo properly enabled for render- and control nodes. In addition, *) We disable the use of VRAM when SVGA is not enabled. *) We simplify PM support so that we only throw out resources on hibernate, not on suspend, since the device keeps its state on suspend.
