2024-08-15net: thunder_bgx: Fix netdev structure allocationMarc Zyngier1-9/+21
Commit 94833addfaba ("net: thunderx: Unembed netdev structure") had a go at dynamically allocating the netdev structures for the thunderx_bgx driver. This change results in my ThunderX box catching fire (to be fair, it is what it does best). The issues with this change are that: - bgx_lmac_enable() is called *after* bgx_acpi_register_phy() and bgx_init_of_phy(), both expecting netdev to be a valid pointer. - bgx_init_of_phy() populates the MAC addresses for *all* LMACs attached to a given BGX instance, and thus needs netdev for each of them to have been allocated. There is a few things to be said about how the driver mixes LMAC and BGX states which leads to this sorry state, but that's beside the point. To address this, go back to a situation where all netdev structures are allocated before the driver starts relying on them, and move the freeing of these structures to driver removal. Someone brave enough can always go and restructure the driver if they want. 2024-07-15net: Add struct kernel_ethtool_ts_infoKory Maincent1-1/+1
In prevision to add new UAPI for hwtstamp we will be limited to the struct ethtool_ts_info that is currently passed in fixed binary format through the ETHTOOL_GET_TS_INFO ethtool ioctl. It would be good if new kernel code already started operating on an extensible kernel variant of that structure, similar in concept to struct kernel_hwtstamp_config vs struct hwtstamp_config. Since struct ethtool_ts_info is in include/uapi/linux/ethtool.h, here we introduce the kernel-only structure in include/linux/ethtool.h. The manual copy is then made in the function called by ETHTOOL_GET_TS_INFO. Embedding net_device into structures prohibits the usage of flexible arrays in the net_device structure. For more details, see the discussion at [1]. Un-embed the net_devices from struct lmac by converting them into pointers, and allocating them dynamically. Use the leverage alloc_netdev() to allocate the net_device object at bgx_lmac_enable(). The free of the device occurs at bgx_lmac_disable(). Do not free_netdevice() if bgx_lmac_enable() fails after lmac->netdev is allocated, since bgx_lmac_disable() is called if bgx_lmac_enable() fails, and lmac->netdev will be freed there (similarly to lmac->dmacs). 2023-12-14net: ethtool: pass a pointer to parameters to get/set_rxfh ethtool opsAhmed Zaki1-15/+16
The get/set_rxfh ethtool ops currently takes the rxfh (RSS) parameters as direct function arguments. This will force us to change the API (and all drivers' functions) every time some new parameters are added. This is part 1/2 of the fix, as suggested in [1]: - First simplify the code by always providing a pointer to all params (indir, key and func); the fact that some of them may be NULL seems like a weird historic thing or a premature optimization. It will simplify the drivers if all pointers are always present. - Then make the functions take a dev pointer, and a pointer to a single struct wrapping all arguments. 2023-05-09net: thunderx: Use alloc_ordered_workqueue() to create ordered workqueuesTejun Heo1-2/+1
BACKGROUND ========== When multiple work items are queued to a workqueue, their execution order doesn't match the queueing order. They may get executed in any order and simultaneously. When fully serialized execution - one by one in the queueing order - is needed, an ordered workqueue should be used which can be created with alloc_ordered_workqueue(). However, alloc_ordered_workqueue() was a later addition. Before it, an ordered workqueue could be obtained by creating an UNBOUND workqueue with @max_active==1. This originally was an implementation side-effect which was broken by 4c16bd327c74 ("workqueue: restore WQ_UNBOUND/max_active==1 to be ordered"). Because there were users that depended on the ordered execution, 5c0338c68706 ("workqueue: restore WQ_UNBOUND/max_active==1 to be ordered") made workqueue allocation path to implicitly promote UNBOUND workqueues w/ @max_active==1 to ordered workqueues. While this has worked okay, overloading the UNBOUND allocation interface this way creates other issues. It's difficult to tell whether a given workqueue actually needs to be ordered and users that legitimately want a min concurrency level wq unexpectedly gets an ordered one instead. With planned UNBOUND workqueue updates to improve execution locality and more prevalence of chiplet designs which can benefit from such improvements, this isn't a state we wanna be in forever. This patch series audits all callsites that create an UNBOUND workqueue w/ @max_active==1 and converts them to alloc_ordered_workqueue() as necessary. WHAT TO LOOK FOR ================ The conversions are from alloc_workqueue(WQ_UNBOUND | flags, 1, args..) to alloc_ordered_workqueue(flags, args...) which don't cause any functional changes. If you know that fully ordered execution is not ncessary, please let me know. I'll drop the conversion and instead add a comment noting the fact to reduce confusion while conversion is in progress. If you aren't fully sure, it's completely fine to let the conversion through. The behavior will stay exactly the same and we can always reconsider later. As there are follow-up workqueue core changes, I'd really appreciate if the patch can be routed through the workqueue tree w/ your acks. Thanks. A summary of the flags being set for various drivers is given below. Note that XDP_F_REDIRECT_TARGET and XDP_F_FRAG_TARGET are features that can be turned off and on at runtime. This means that these flags may be set and unset under RTNL lock protection by the driver. Hence, READ_ONCE must be used by code loading the flag value. Also, these flags are not used for synchronization against the availability of XDP resources on a device. It is merely a hint, and hence the read may race with the actual teardown of XDP resources on the device. 2021-12-14net_tstamp: add new flag HWTSTAMP_FLAG_BONDED_PHC_INDEXHangbin Liu1-4/+0
Since commit 94dd016ae538 ("bond: pass get_ts_info and SIOC[SG]HWTSTAMP ioctl to active device") the user could get bond active interface's PHC index directly. But when there is a failover, the bond active interface will change, thus the PHC index is also changed. This may break the user's program if they did not update the PHC timely. This patch adds a new hwtstamp_config flag HWTSTAMP_FLAG_BONDED_PHC_INDEX. When the user wants to get the bond active interface's PHC, they need to add this flag and be aware the PHC index may be changed. With the new flag. All flag checks in current drivers are removed. In non trivial scenarios, the action id alone is not sufficient to identify the program causing the warning. Before the previous patch, the generated stack-trace pointed out at least the involved device driver. Let's additionally include the program name and id, and the relevant device name. If the user needs additional infos, he can fetch them via a kernel probe, leveraging the arguments added here. fwnode_get_mac_address() and device_get_mac_address() return a pointer to the buffer that was passed to them on success or NULL on failure. None of the callers care about the actual value, only if it's NULL or not. These semantics differ from of_get_mac_address() which returns an int so to avoid confusion make the device helpers return an errno. 2021-06-24thunderx: Remove rcu_read_lock() around XDP program invocationToke Høiland-Jørgensen1-2/+0
The thunderx driver has rcu_read_lock()/rcu_read_unlock() pairs around XDP program invocations. However, the actual lifetime of the objects referred by the XDP program invocation is longer, all the way through to the call to xdp_do_flush(), making the scope of the rcu_read_lock() too small. This turns out to be harmless because it all happens in a single NAPI poll cycle (and thus under local_bh_disable()), but it makes the rcu_read_lock() misleading. Rather than extend the scope of the rcu_read_lock(), just get rid of it entirely. With the addition of RCU annotations to the XDP_REDIRECT map types that take bh execution into account, lockdep even understands this to be safe, so there's really no reason to keep it around. 2021-04-14of: net: pass the dst buffer to of_get_mac_address()Michael Walle1-4/+1
of_get_mac_address() returns a "const void*" pointer to a MAC address. Lately, support to fetch the MAC address by an NVMEM provider was added. But this will only work with platform devices. It will not work with PCI devices (e.g. of an integrated root complex) and esp. not with DSA ports. There is an of_* variant of the nvmem binding which works without devices. The returned data of a nvmem_cell_read() has to be freed after use. On the other hand the return of_get_mac_address() points to some static data without a lifetime. The trick for now, was to allocate a device resource managed buffer which is then returned. This will only work if we have an actual device. Change it, so that the caller of of_get_mac_address() has to supply a buffer where the MAC address is written to. Unfortunately, this will touch all drivers which use the of_get_mac_address(). Usually the code looks like: const char *addr; addr = of_get_mac_address(np); if (!IS_ERR(addr)) ether_addr_copy(ndev->dev_addr, addr); This can then be simply rewritten as: of_get_mac_address(np, ndev->dev_addr); Sometimes is_valid_ether_addr() is used to test the MAC address. of_get_mac_address() already makes sure, it just returns a valid MAC address. Thus we can just test its return code. But we have to be careful if there are still other sources for the MAC address before the of_get_mac_address(). In this case we have to keep the is_valid_ether_addr() call. The following coccinelle patch was used to convert common cases to the new style. Afterwards, I've manually gone over the drivers and fixed the return code variable: either used a new one or if one was already available use that. The shifting of the u8 integers rq->caching by 26 bits to the left will be promoted to a 32 bit signed int and then sign-extended to a u64. In the event that rq->caching is greater than 0x1f then all then all the upper 32 bits of the u64 end up as also being set because of the int sign-extension. Fix this by casting the u8 values to a u64 before the 26 bit left shift. Now that BPF program/link management is centralized in generic net_device code, kernel code never queries program id from drivers, so XDP_QUERY_PROG/XDP_QUERY_PROG_HW commands are unnecessary. This patch removes all the implementations of those commands in kernel, along the xdp_attachment_query(). This patch was compile-tested on allyesconfig.
