2022-04-20net: mdio: don't defer probe forever if PHY IRQ provider is missingVladimir Oltean1-0/+5
[ Upstream commit 74befa447e6839cdd90ed541159ec783726946f9 ] When a driver for an interrupt controller is missing, of_irq_get() returns -EPROBE_DEFER ad infinitum, causing fwnode_mdiobus_phy_device_register(), and ultimately, the entire of_mdiobus_register() call, to fail. In turn, any phy_connect() call towards a PHY on this MDIO bus will also fail. This is not what is expected to happen, because the PHY library falls back to poll mode when of_irq_get() returns a hard error code, and the MDIO bus, PHY and attached Ethernet controller work fine, albeit suboptimally, when the PHY library polls for link status. However, -EPROBE_DEFER has special handling given the assumption that at some point probe deferral will stop, and the driver for the supplier will kick in and create the IRQ domain. Reasons for which the interrupt controller may be missing: - It is not yet written. This may happen if a more recent DT blob (with an interrupt-parent for the PHY) is used to boot an old kernel where the driver didn't exist, and that kernel worked with the vintage-correct DT blob using poll mode. - It is compiled out. Behavior is the same as above. - It is compiled as a module. The kernel will wait for a number of seconds specified in the "deferred_probe_timeout" boot parameter for user space to load the required module. The current default is 0, which times out at the end of initcalls. It is possible that this might cause regressions unless users adjust this boot parameter. The proposed solution is to use the driver_deferred_probe_check_state() helper function provided by the driver core, which gives up after some -EPROBE_DEFER attempts, taking "deferred_probe_timeout" into consideration. The return code is changed from -EPROBE_DEFER into -ENODEV or -ETIMEDOUT, depending on whether the kernel is compiled with support for modules or not. 2022-04-19net: mdio: add reset control for Aspeed MDIODylan Hung1-1/+14
Add reset assertion/deassertion for Aspeed MDIO. There are 4 MDIO controllers embedded in Aspeed AST2600 SOC and share one reset control register SCU50[3]. To work with old DT blobs which don't have the reset property, devm_reset_control_get_optional_shared is used in this change. 2022-03-02net: mdio-ipq4019: add delay after clock enableBaruch Siach1-1/+5
commit b6ad6261d27708567b309fdb3102b12c42a070cc upstream. Experimentation shows that PHY detect might fail when the code attempts MDIO bus read immediately after clock enable. Add delay to stabilize the clock before bus access. PHY detect failure started to show after commit 7590fc6f80ac ("net: mdio: Demote probed message to debug print") that removed coincidental delay between clock enable and bus access. 10ms is meant to match the time it take to send the probed message over UART at 115200 bps. commit 9dbe33cf371bd70330858370bdbc35c7668f00c3 upstream. The issue happened randomly in runtime. The message "Link is Down" is popped but soon it recovered to "Link is Up". The "Link is Down" results from the incorrect read data for reading the PHY register via MDIO bus. The correct sequence for reading the data shall be: 1. fire the command 2. wait for command done (this step was missing) 3. wait for data idle 4. read data from data register Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org Fixes: f160e99462c6 ("net: phy: Add mdio-aspeed") Reviewed-by: Joel Stanley <joel@jms.id.au> Signed-off-by: Dylan Hung <dylan_hung@aspeedtech.com> Reviewed-by: Andrew Lunn <andrew@lunn.ch> Reviewed-by: Russell King (Oracle) <rmk+kernel@armlinux.org.uk> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20211125024432.15809-1-dylan_hung@aspeedtech.com Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>

2021-08-18net: mdio-mux: Handle -EPROBE_DEFER correctlySaravana Kannan1-2/+6
When registering mdiobus children, if we get an -EPROBE_DEFER, we shouldn't ignore it and continue registering the rest of the mdiobus children. This would permanently prevent the deferring child mdiobus from working instead of reattempting it in the future. So, if a child mdiobus needs to be reattempted in the future, defer the entire mdio-mux initialization. This fixes the issue where PHYs sitting under the mdio-mux aren't initialized correctly if the PHY's interrupt controller is not yet ready when the mdio-mux is being probed. 2021-06-25net: mdiobus: withdraw fwnode_mdbiobus_registerMarcin Wojtas1-22/+0
The newly implemented fwnode_mdbiobus_register turned out to be problematic - in case the fwnode_/of_/acpi_mdio are built as modules, a dependency cycle can be observed during the depmod phase of modules_install, eg.: depmod: ERROR: Cycle detected: fwnode_mdio -> of_mdio -> fwnode_mdio depmod: ERROR: Found 2 modules in dependency cycles! OR: depmod: ERROR: Cycle detected: acpi_mdio -> fwnode_mdio -> acpi_mdio depmod: ERROR: Found 2 modules in dependency cycles! A possible solution could be to rework fwnode_mdiobus_register, so that to merge the contents of acpi_mdiobus_register and of_mdiobus_register. However feasible, such change would be very intrusive and affect huge amount of the of_mdiobus_register users. Since there are currently 2 users of ACPI and MDIO (xgmac_mdio and mvmdio), withdraw the fwnode_mdbiobus_register and roll back to a simple 'if' condition in affected drivers. 'bus->mii_bus' have been allocated with 'devm_mdiobus_alloc_size()' in the probe function. So it must not be freed explicitly or there will be a double free. Remove the incorrect 'mdiobus_free' in the remove function. Fixes: 379d7ac7ca31 ("phy: mdio-thunder: Add driver for Cavium Thunder SoC MDIO buses.") 2021-04-28net: phy: Add support for microchip SMI0 MDIO busAndrew Lunn2-2/+14
SMI0 is a mangled version of MDIO. The main low level difference is the MDIO C22 OP code is always 0, not 0x2 or 0x1 for Read/Write. The read/write information is instead encoded in the PHY address. Extend the bit-bang code to allow the op code to be overridden, but default to normal C22 values. Add an extra compatible to the mdio-gpio driver, and when this compatible is present, set the op codes to 0. A higher level driver, sitting on top of the basic MDIO bus driver can then implement the rest of the microchip SMI0 odderties. 2021-02-16net: phy: rename PHY_IGNORE_INTERRUPT to PHY_MAC_INTERRUPTHeiner Kallweit1-2/+2
Some internal PHY's have their events like link change reported by the MAC interrupt. We have PHY_IGNORE_INTERRUPT to deal with this scenario. I'm not too happy with this name. We don't ignore interrupts, typically there is no interrupt exposed at a PHY level. So let's rename it to PHY_MAC_INTERRUPT. This is in line with phy_mac_interrupt(), which is called from the MAC interrupt handler to handle PHY events.
