2024-08-19perf map: API clean upIan Rogers1-2/+2
map__init() is only used internally so make it static. Assume memory is zero initialized, which will better support adding fields to struct map in the future and was already the case for map__new2. To reduce complexity, change set_priv and set_erange_warned to not take a value to assign as they always assign true. 2024-05-06perf dso: Add reference count checking and accessor functionsIan Rogers1-3/+3
Add reference count checking to struct dso, this can help with implementing correct reference counting discipline. To avoid RC_CHK_ACCESS everywhere, add accessor functions for the variables in struct dso. The majority of the change is mechanical in nature and not easy to split up. Committer testing: 'perf test' up to this patch shows no regressions. But: util/symbol.c: In function ‘dso__load_bfd_symbols’: util/symbol.c:1683:9: error: too few arguments to function ‘dso__set_adjust_symbols’ 1683 | dso__set_adjust_symbols(dso); | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In file included from util/symbol.c:21: util/dso.h:268:20: note: declared here 268 | static inline void dso__set_adjust_symbols(struct dso *dso, bool val) | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ make[6]: *** [/home/acme/git/perf-tools-next/tools/build/Makefile.build:106: /tmp/tmp.ZWHbQftdN6/util/symbol.o] Error 1 MKDIR /tmp/tmp.ZWHbQftdN6/tests/workloads/ make[6]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs.... struct map is reference counted, having it also be a node in an red-black tree complicates the reference counting. 2022-09-28perf tests vmlinux-kallsyms: Update is_ignored_symbol function to match the ↵Athira Rajeev1-2/+3
kernel ignored list The testcase “vmlinux-kallsyms.c” fails in powerpc. vmlinux symtab matches kallsyms: FAILED! This test look at the symbols in the vmlinux DSO and check if we find all of them in the kallsyms dso. But from the powerpc logs , observed that the failure happens for: ERR : 0xc0000000000fe9c8: .Lmfspr_table not on kallsyms ERR : 0xc0000000001009c8: .Lmtspr_table not on kallsyms These are labels ( with .L) in the source code and has to be ignored. Reference code with .Lmtspr_table: arch/powerpc/xmon/spr_access.S The testcases invokes is_ignored_symbol() function to ignore hidden symbols in the dso like local symbols. This function is adapted from is_ignored_symbol() kernel function in code: scripts/kallsyms.c . The kernel function got some updates which is not reflected in the testcase function and the new updates also handles ignoring "labels". Below is the changes that went in the kernel function. /* Symbol names that begin with the following are ignored.*/ static const char * const ignored_prefixes[] = { "$", /* local symbols for ARM, MIPS, etc. */ - ".LASANPC", /* s390 kasan local symbols */ + ".L", /* local labels, .LBB,.Ltmpxxx,.L__unnamed_xx,.LASANPC, etc. */ "__crc_", /* modversions */ "__efistub_", /* arm64 EFI stub namespace */ - "__kvm_nvhe_", /* arm64 non-VHE KVM namespace */ + "__kvm_nvhe_$", /* arm64 local symbols in non-VHE KVM namespace */ + "__kvm_nvhe_.L", /* arm64 local symbols in non-VHE KVM namespace */ "__AArch64ADRPThunk_", /* arm64 lld */ "__ARMV5PILongThunk_", /* arm lld */ "__ARMV7PILongThunk_", This change is part of below commits and will handle the symbols with “.L” commit d4c858643263 ("kallsyms: ignore all local labels prefixed by '.L'") commit 6ccf9cb557bd ("KVM: arm64: Symbolize the nVHE HYP addresses") Update the testcase function to include the new changes. 2021-09-29perf tests vmlinux-kallsyms: Ignore hidden symbolsMichael Petlan1-0/+102
Certain kernel symbols are purposely hidden from kallsyms. The function is_ignored_symbol() from scripts/kallsyms.c decides if a symbol should be hidden or not. The perf test "vmlinux symtab matches kallsyms" fails in case perf finds some of the hidden symbols in its machine image and can't match them to kallsyms. Let's add a filter to check if a symbol not found isn't one of these before failing the test. The function is_ignored_symbol() has been copied from scripts/kallsyms.c and needs to be updated along with the original. 2019-11-26perf maps: Merge 'struct maps' with 'struct map_groups'Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-5/+4
And pick the shortest name: 'struct maps'. The split existed because we used to have two groups of maps, one for functions and one for variables, but that only complicated things, sometimes we needed to figure out what was at some address and then had to first try it on the functions group and if that failed, fall back to the variables one. That split is long gone, so for quite a while we had only one struct maps per struct map_groups, simplify things by combining those structs. First patch is the minimum needed to merge both, follow up patches will rename 'thread->mg' to 'thread->maps', etc. Cc: Adrian Hunter <adrian.hunter@intel.com> Cc: Andi Kleen <ak@linux.intel.com> Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/n/tip-hom6639ro7020o708trhxh59@git.kernel.org Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

2018-02-16perf tests: Use arch__compare_symbol_names to compare symbolsJiri Olsa1-1/+1
The symbol search called by machine__find_kernel_symbol_by_name is using internally arch__compare_symbol_names function to compare 2 symbol names, because different archs have different ways of comparing symbols. Mostly for skipping '.' prefixes and similar. In test 1 when we try to find matching symbols in kallsyms and vmlinux, by address and by symbol name. When either is found we compare the pair symbol names by simple strcmp, which is not good enough for reasons explained in previous paragraph. On powerpc this can cause lockup, because even thought we found the pair, the compared names are different and don't match simple strcmp. Following code path is executed, that leads to lockup: - we find the pair in kallsyms by sym->start next_pair: - we compare the names and it fails - we find the pair by sym->name - the pair addresses match so we call goto next_pair because we assume the names match in this case Signed-off-by: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Tested-by: Naveen N. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman1-0/+1
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2016-09-01perf test vmlinux: Tolerate symbol aliasesArnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-3/+4
The algorithms used to prune aliases in symbols__fixup_duplicate() uses information available on ELF symtabs that are not present on /proc/kallsyms, so it picks different aliases as "best" for vmlinux and kallsyms. We could probably improve a bit this by having a list of aliases for the "best" symbols picked, instead of throwing this info, but that is left for when we find a real need. With this, 'perf test vmlinux' passes: # perf test -F 1 1: vmlinux symtab matches kallsyms: Ok # When we ask for verbose mode, we can see those warning: # perf test -F -v 1 1: vmlinux symtab matches kallsyms: --- start --- Looking at the vmlinux_path (8 entries long) Using /lib/modules/4.8.0-rc4+/build/vmlinux for symbols WARN: 0xffffffffb7001000: diff name v: xen_hypercall_set_trap_table k: hypercall_page WARN: 0xffffffffb7077970: diff end addr for aesni_gcm_dec v: 0xffffffffb707a2f2 k: 0xffffffffb7077a02 WARN: 0xffffffffb707a300: diff end addr for aesni_gcm_enc v: 0xffffffffb707cc03 k: 0xffffffffb707a392 WARN: 0xffffffffb707f950: diff end addr for aesni_gcm_enc_avx_gen2 v: 0xffffffffb7084ef6 k: 0xffffffffb707f9c3 WARN: 0xffffffffb7084f00: diff end addr for aesni_gcm_dec_avx_gen2 v: 0xffffffffb708a691 k: 0xffffffffb7084f73 WARN: 0xffffffffb708aa10: diff end addr for aesni_gcm_enc_avx_gen4 v: 0xffffffffb708f844 k: 0xffffffffb708aa83 WARN: 0xffffffffb708f850: diff end addr for aesni_gcm_dec_avx_gen4 v: 0xffffffffb709486f k: 0xffffffffb708f8c3 WARN: 0xffffffffb71a6e50: diff name v: perf_pmu_commit_txn.part.98 k: perf_pmu_cancel_txn.part.97 WARN: 0xffffffffb752e480: diff name v: wakeup_expire_count_show.part.5 k: wakeup_active_count_show.part.7 WARN: 0xffffffffb76e8d00: diff name v: phys_switch_id_show.part.11 k: phys_port_name_show.part.12 WARN: Maps only in vmlinux: ffffffffb7d7d000-ffffffffb7eeaac8 117d000 [kernel].init.text ffffffffb7eeaac8-ffffffffc03ad000 12eaac8 [kernel].exit.text ---- end ---- vmlinux symtab matches kallsyms: Ok # Cc: Adrian Hunter <adrian.hunter@intel.com> Cc: David Ahern <dsahern@gmail.com> Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Cc: Masami Hiramatsu <mhiramat@kernel.org> Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Cc: Wang Nan <wangnan0@huawei.com> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/n/tip-6v5w1k8rpx4ggczlkw730vt0@git.kernel.org Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

2015-11-19perf tests: Pass the subtest index to each test routineArnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-1/+1
Some tests have sub-tests we want to run, so allow passing this. Wang tried to avoid having to touch all tests, but then, having the test.func in an anonymous union makes the build fail on older compilers, like the one in RHEL6, where: test a = { .func = foo, }; fails. To fix it leave the func pointer in the main structure and pass the subtest index to all tests, end result function is the same, but we have just one function pointer, not two, with and without the subtest index as an argument.
