git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/pcmoore/lsm Pull lsm updates from Paul Moore: - Move the LSM framework to static calls This transitions the vast majority of the LSM callbacks into static calls. Those callbacks which haven't been converted were left as-is due to the general ugliness of the changes required to support the static call conversion; we can revisit those callbacks at a future date. - Add the Integrity Policy Enforcement (IPE) LSM This adds a new LSM, Integrity Policy Enforcement (IPE). There is plenty of documentation about IPE in this patches, so I'll refrain from going into too much detail here, but the basic motivation behind IPE is to provide a mechanism such that administrators can restrict execution to only those binaries which come from integrity protected storage, e.g. a dm-verity protected filesystem. You will notice that IPE requires additional LSM hooks in the initramfs, dm-verity, and fs-verity code, with the associated patches carrying ACK/review tags from the associated maintainers. We couldn't find an obvious maintainer for the initramfs code, but the IPE patchset has been widely posted over several years. Both Deven Bowers and Fan Wu have contributed to IPE's development over the past several years, with Fan Wu agreeing to serve as the IPE maintainer moving forward. Once IPE is accepted into your tree, I'll start working with Fan to ensure he has the necessary accounts, keys, etc. so that he can start submitting IPE pull requests to you directly during the next merge window. - Move the lifecycle management of the LSM blobs to the LSM framework Management of the LSM blobs (the LSM state buffers attached to various kernel structs, typically via a void pointer named "security" or similar) has been mixed, some blobs were allocated/managed by individual LSMs, others were managed by the LSM framework itself. Starting with this pull we move management of all the LSM blobs, minus the XFRM blob, into the framework itself, improving consistency across LSMs, and reducing the amount of duplicated code across LSMs. Due to some additional work required to migrate the XFRM blob, it has been left as a todo item for a later date; from a practical standpoint this omission should have little impact as only SELinux provides a XFRM LSM implementation. - Fix problems with the LSM's handling of F_SETOWN The LSM hook for the fcntl(F_SETOWN) operation had a couple of problems: it was racy with itself, and it was disconnected from the associated DAC related logic in such a way that the LSM state could be updated in cases where the DAC state would not. We fix both of these problems by moving the security_file_set_fowner() hook into the same section of code where the DAC attributes are updated. Not only does this resolve the DAC/LSM synchronization issue, but as that code block is protected by a lock, it also resolve the race condition. - Fix potential problems with the security_inode_free() LSM hook Due to use of RCU to protect inodes and the placement of the LSM hook associated with freeing the inode, there is a bit of a challenge when it comes to managing any LSM state associated with an inode. The VFS folks are not open to relocating the LSM hook so we have to get creative when it comes to releasing an inode's LSM state. Traditionally we have used a single LSM callback within the hook that is triggered when the inode is "marked for death", but not actually released due to RCU. Unfortunately, this causes problems for LSMs which want to take an action when the inode's associated LSM state is actually released; so we add an additional LSM callback, inode_free_security_rcu(), that is called when the inode's LSM state is released in the RCU free callback. - Refactor two LSM hooks to better fit the LSM return value patterns The vast majority of the LSM hooks follow the "return 0 on success, negative values on failure" pattern, however, there are a small handful that have unique return value behaviors which has caused confusion in the past and makes it difficult for the BPF verifier to properly vet BPF LSM programs. 2024-08-30proc: add config & param to block forcing mem writesAdrian Ratiu1-0/+32
This adds a Kconfig option and boot param to allow removing the FOLL_FORCE flag from /proc/pid/mem write calls because it can be abused. The traditional forcing behavior is kept as default because it can break GDB and some other use cases. Previously we tried a more sophisticated approach allowing distributions to fine-tune /proc/pid/mem behavior, however that got NAK-ed by Linus [1], who prefers this simpler approach with semantics also easier to understand for users. Integrity Policy Enforcement (IPE) is an LSM that provides an complimentary approach to Mandatory Access Control than existing LSMs today. Existing LSMs have centered around the concept of access to a resource should be controlled by the current user's credentials. IPE's approach, is that access to a resource should be controlled by the system's trust of a current resource. The basis of this approach is defining a global policy to specify which resource can be trusted. In keeping with current kernel conventions, this moves all of these comment blocks to the top of the function definitions, transforming them into the kdoc format in the process. This should make it much easier to maintain these comments, which are the main source of LSM hook documentation. For the most part the comment contents were left as-is, although some glaring errors were corrected. Expect additional edits in the future as we slowly update and correct the comment blocks. This is the bulk of the diffstat. - Introduce LSM_ORDER_LAST Similar to how LSM_ORDER_FIRST is used to specify LSMs which should be ordered before "normal" LSMs, the LSM_ORDER_LAST is used to specify LSMs which should be ordered after "normal" LSMs. This is one of the prerequisites for transitioning IMA/EVM to a proper LSM. - Remove the security_old_inode_init_security() hook The security_old_inode_init_security() LSM hook only allows for a single xattr which is problematic both for LSM stacking and the IMA/EVM-as-a-LSM effort. 2023-03-20selinux: remove the runtime disable functionalityPaul Moore1-5/+0
After working with the larger SELinux-based distros for several years, we're finally at a place where we can disable the SELinux runtime disable functionality. The existing kernel deprecation notice explains the functionality and why we want to remove it: The selinuxfs "disable" node allows SELinux to be disabled at runtime prior to a policy being loaded into the kernel. If disabled via this mechanism, SELinux will remain disabled until the system is rebooted. The preferred method of disabling SELinux is via the "selinux=0" boot parameter, but the selinuxfs "disable" node was created to make it easier for systems with primitive bootloaders that did not allow for easy modification of the kernel command line. Unfortunately, allowing for SELinux to be disabled at runtime makes it difficult to secure the kernel's LSM hooks using the "__ro_after_init" feature. It is that last sentence, mentioning the '__ro_after_init' hardening, which is the real motivation for this change, and if you look at the diffstat you'll see that the impact of this patch reaches across all the different LSMs, helping prevent tampering at the LSM hook level. From a SELinux perspective, it is important to note that if you continue to disable SELinux via "/etc/selinux/config" it may appear that SELinux is disabled, but it is simply in an uninitialized state. If you load a policy with `load_policy -i`, you will see SELinux come alive just as if you had loaded the policy during early-boot. It is also worth noting that the "/sys/fs/selinux/disable" file is always writable now, regardless of the Kconfig settings, but writing to the file has no effect on the system, other than to display an error on the console if a non-zero/true value is written. Finally, in the several years where we have been working on deprecating this functionality, there has only been one instance of someone mentioning any user visible breakage. In this particular case it was an individual's kernel test system, and the workaround documented in the deprecation notice ("selinux=0" on the kernel command line) resolved the issue without problem. This has served its purpose and is no longer used. All usercopy violations appear to have been handled by now, any remaining instances (or new bugs) will cause copies to be rejected. This isn't a direct revert of commit 2d891fbc3bb6 ("usercopy: Allow strict enforcement of whitelists"); since usercopy_fallback is effectively 0, the fallback handling is removed too. This also removes the usercopy_fallback module parameter on slab_common. Clang has never correctly compiled the FORTIFY_SOURCE defenses due to a couple bugs: Eliding inlines with matching __builtin_* names https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50322 Incorrect __builtin_constant_p() of some globals https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41459 In the process of making improvements to the FORTIFY_SOURCE defenses, the first (silent) bug (coincidentally) becomes worked around, but exposes the latter which breaks the build. As such, Clang must not be used with CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE until at least latter bug is fixed (in Clang 13), and the fortify routines have been rearranged. Update the Kconfig to reflect the reality of the current situation. 2021-04-22landlock: Add object managementMickaël Salaün1-0/+1
A Landlock object enables to identify a kernel object (e.g. an inode). A Landlock rule is a set of access rights allowed on an object. Rules are grouped in rulesets that may be tied to a set of processes (i.e. subjects) to enforce a scoped access-control (i.e. a domain). Because Landlock's goal is to empower any process (especially unprivileged ones) to sandbox themselves, we cannot rely on a system-wide object identification such as file extended attributes. Indeed, we need innocuous, composable and modular access-controls. The main challenge with these constraints is to identify kernel objects while this identification is useful (i.e. when a security policy makes use of this object). But this identification data should be freed once no policy is using it. This ephemeral tagging should not and may not be written in the filesystem. We then need to manage the lifetime of a rule according to the lifetime of its objects. To avoid a global lock, this implementation make use of RCU and counters to safely reference objects. A following commit uses this generic object management for inodes. Commit 70b62c25665f636c ("LoadPin: Initialize as ordered LSM") removed CONFIG_DEFAULT_SECURITY_{SELINUX,SMACK,TOMOYO,APPARMOR,DAC} from security/Kconfig and changed CONFIG_LSM to provide a fixed ordering as a default value. That commit expected that existing users (upgrading from Linux 5.0 and earlier) will edit CONFIG_LSM value in accordance with their CONFIG_DEFAULT_SECURITY_* choice in their old kernel configs. But since users might forget to edit CONFIG_LSM value, this patch revives the choice (only for providing the default value for CONFIG_LSM) in order to make sure that CONFIG_LSM reflects CONFIG_DEFAULT_SECURITY_* from their old kernel configs. Note that since TOMOYO can be fully stacked against the other legacy major LSMs, when it is selected, it explicitly disables the other LSMs to avoid them also initializing since TOMOYO does not expect this currently. SafeSetID gates the setid family of syscalls to restrict UID/GID transitions from a given UID/GID to only those approved by a system-wide whitelist. These restrictions also prohibit the given UIDs/GIDs from obtaining auxiliary privileges associated with CAP_SET{U/G}ID, such as allowing a user to set up user namespace UID mappings. For now, only gating the set*uid family of syscalls is supported, with support for set*gid coming in a future patch set. This reverts commit 1f40a46cf47c12d93a5ad9dccd82bd36ff8f956a. It turned out that this patch is not sufficient to enable PTI on 32 bit systems with legacy 2-level page-tables. In this paging mode the huge-page PTEs are in the top-level page-table directory, where also the mirroring to the user-space page-table happens. So every huge PTE exits twice, in the kernel and in the user page-table. That means that accessed/dirty bits need to be fetched from two PTEs in this mode to be safe, but this is not trivial to implement because it needs changes to generic code just for the sake of enabling PTI with 32-bit legacy paging. As all systems that need PTI should support PAE anyway, remove support for PTI when 32-bit legacy paging is used. Slab caches that are never exposed to userspace can declare no whitelist for their objects, thereby keeping them unavailable to userspace via dynamic copy operations. This introduces CONFIG_HARDENED_USERCOPY_FALLBACK to control the behavior of hardened usercopy whitelist violations. By default, whitelist violations will continue to WARN() so that any bad or missing usercopy whitelists can be discovered without being too disruptive. If this config is disabled at build time or a system is booted with "slab_common.usercopy_fallback=0", usercopy whitelists will BUG() instead of WARN(). Finally allow CONFIG_PAGE_TABLE_ISOLATION to be enabled. PARAVIRT generally requires that the kernel not manage its own page tables. It also means that the hypervisor and kernel must agree wholeheartedly about what format the page tables are in and what they contain. PAGE_TABLE_ISOLATION, unfortunately, changes the rules and they can not be used together. I've seen conflicting feedback from maintainers lately about whether they want the Kconfig magic to go first or last in a patch series. It's going last here because the partially-applied series leads to kernels that can not boot in a bunch of cases. I did a run through the entire series with CONFIG_PAGE_TABLE_ISOLATION=y to look for build errors, though.
