2007-04-26[SK_BUFF]: Convert skb->tail to sk_buff_data_tArnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-1/+1
So that it is also an offset from skb->head, reduces its size from 8 to 4 bytes on 64bit architectures, allowing us to combine the 4 bytes hole left by the layer headers conversion, reducing struct sk_buff size to 256 bytes, i.e. 4 64byte cachelines, and since the sk_buff slab cache is SLAB_HWCACHE_ALIGN... :-) Many calculations that previously required that skb->{transport,network, mac}_header be first converted to a pointer now can be done directly, being meaningful as offsets or pointers. 2007-04-26[SK_BUFF]: Introduce skb_transport_header(skb)Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-1/+1
For the places where we need a pointer to the transport header, it is still legal to touch skb->h.raw directly if just adding to, subtracting from or setting it to another layer header. Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2007-04-26[SK_BUFF]: Introduce skb_reset_network_header(skb)Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-1/+1
For the common, open coded 'skb->nh.raw = skb->data' operation, so that we can later turn skb->nh.raw into a offset, reducing the size of struct sk_buff in 64bit land while possibly keeping it as a pointer on 32bit. This one touches just the most simple case, next will handle the slightly more "complex" cases. Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2007-04-26[NET]: Introduce SIOCGSTAMPNS ioctl to get timestamps with nanosec resolutionEric Dumazet1-0/+3
Now network timestamps use ktime_t infrastructure, we can add a new ioctl() SIOCGSTAMPNS command to get timestamps in 'struct timespec'. User programs can thus access to nanosecond resolution. 2007-04-26[NET]: convert network timestamps to ktime_tEric Dumazet1-1/+1
We currently use a special structure (struct skb_timeval) and plain 'struct timeval' to store packet timestamps in sk_buffs and struct sock. This has some drawbacks : - Fixed resolution of micro second. - Waste of space on 64bit platforms where sizeof(struct timeval)=16 I suggest using ktime_t that is a nice abstraction of high resolution time services, currently capable of nanosecond resolution. As sizeof(ktime_t) is 8 bytes, using ktime_t in 'struct sock' permits a 8 byte shrink of this structure on 64bit architectures. Some other structures also benefit from this size reduction (struct ipq in ipv4/ip_fragment.c, struct frag_queue in ipv6/reassembly.c, ...) Once this ktime infrastructure adopted, we can more easily provide nanosecond resolution on top of it. (ioctl SIOCGSTAMPNS and/or SO_TIMESTAMPNS/SCM_TIMESTAMPNS) Note : this patch includes a bug correction in compat_sock_get_timestamp() where a "err = 0;" was missing (so this syscall returned -ENOENT instead of 0) Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <dada1@cosmosbay.com> CC: Stephen Hemminger <shemminger@linux-foundation.org> CC: John find <linux.kernel@free.fr> Signed-off-by: David S. 2007-02-14[PATCH] remove many unneeded #includes of sched.hTim Schmielau1-1/+0
After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes. There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the course of cleaning it up. To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble. Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha, arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig, allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted by unnecessarily included header files). 2006-03-29[NET]: Fix ipx/econet/appletalk/irda ioctl crashesPetr Vandrovec1-0/+16
Fix kernel oopses whenever somebody issues compatible ioctl on AppleTalk, Econet, IPX or IRDA socket. For AppleTalk/Econet/IRDA it restores state in which these sockets were before compat_ioctl was introduced to the socket ops, for IPX it implements support for 4 ioctls which were not implemented before - as these ioctls use structures which match between 32bit and 64bit userspace, no special code is needed, just call 64bit ioctl handler. 2006-01-04[NET]: Add a dev_ioctl() fallback to sock_ioctl()Christoph Hellwig1-1/+1
Currently all network protocols need to call dev_ioctl as the default fallback in their ioctl implementations. This patch adds a fallback to dev_ioctl to sock_ioctl if the protocol returned -ENOIOCTLCMD. This way all the procotol ioctl handlers can be simplified and we don't need to export dev_ioctl. 2006-01-04[INET_SOCK]: Move struct inet_sock & helper functions to net/inet_sock.hArnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-0/+1
To help in reducing the number of include dependencies, several files were touched as they were getting needed headers indirectly for stuff they use. Thanks also to Alan Menegotto for pointing out that net/dccp/proto.c had linux/dccp.h include twice. Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@mandriva.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2006-01-04[NET]: move struct proto_ops to constEric Dumazet1-2/+2
I noticed that some of 'struct proto_ops' used in the kernel may share a cache line used by locks or other heavily modified data. (default linker alignement is 32 bytes, and L1_CACHE_LINE is 64 or 128 at least) This patch makes sure a 'struct proto_ops' can be declared as const, so that all cpus can share all parts of it without false sharing. This is not mandatory : a driver can still use a read/write structure if it needs to (and eventually a __read_mostly) I made a global stubstitute to change all existing occurences to make them const. This should reduce the possibility of false sharing on SMP, and speedup some socket system calls. Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <dada1@cosmosbay.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2005-10-04[IPV4]: Replace __in_dev_get with __in_dev_get_rcu/rtnlHerbert Xu1-1/+1
The following patch renames __in_dev_get() to __in_dev_get_rtnl() and introduces __in_dev_get_rcu() to cover the second case. 1) RCU with refcnt should use in_dev_get(). 2) RCU without refcnt should use __in_dev_get_rcu(). 3) All others must hold RTNL and use __in_dev_get_rtnl(). There is one exception in net/ipv4/route.c which is in fact a pre-existing race condition. I've marked it as such so that we remember to fix it. This patch is based on suggestions and prior work by Suzanne Wood and Paul McKenney. Signed-off-by: Herbert Xu <herbert@gondor.apana.org.au> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2005-08-30[NET]: Kill skb->real_devDavid S. Miller1-1/+1
Bonding just wants the device before the skb_bond() decapsulation occurs, so simply pass that original device into packet_type->func() as an argument. It remains to be seen whether we can use this same exact thing to get rid of skb->input_dev as well. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2005-08-30[NET]: Kill skb->listDavid S. Miller1-2/+2
Remove the "list" member of struct sk_buff, as it is entirely redundant. All SKB list removal callers know which list the SKB is on, so storing this in sk_buff does nothing other than taking up some space. Two tricky bits were SCTP, which I took care of, and two ATM drivers which Francois Romieu <romieu@fr.zoreil.com> fixed up. Signed-off-by: David S. 2005-07-12[NET]: move config options out to individual protocolsSam Ravnborg1-0/+36
Move the protocol specific config options out to the specific protocols. With this change net/Kconfig now starts to become readable and serve as a good basis for further re-structuring. The menu structure is left almost intact, except that indention is fixed in most cases. Most visible are the INET changes where several "depends on INET" are replaced with a single ifdef INET / endif pair. Several new files were created to accomplish this change - they are small but serve the purpose that config options are now distributed out where they belongs. 2005-04-17Linux-2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds2-0/+1136
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
