2020-04-30of: reserved-memory: Support multiple regions per deviceThierry Reding1-12/+10
While the lookup/initialization code already supports multiple memory regions per device, the release code will only ever release the first matching memory region. Enhance the code to release all matching regions. Each attachment of a region to a device is uniquely identifiable using a struct device pointer and a pointer to the memory region's struct reserved_mem. When creating a consumer/supplier relationship between two devices, make sure the supplier node is actually active. Otherwise this will create a link relationship that will never be fulfilled. This, in the worst case scenario, will hang the system during boot. Note that, in practice, the fact that a device-tree represented consumer/supplier relationship isn't fulfilled will not prevent devices from successfully probing. Upon adding a new device from a DT node, we scan its properties and its children's properties in order to create a consumer/supplier relationship between the device and the property provider. That said, it's possible for some of the node's children to be disabled, which will create links that'll never be fulfilled. To get around this, use the for_each_available_child_of_node() function instead of for_each_available_node() when iterating over the node's children. 2020-04-28of: property: Don't retry device_link_add() upon failureSaravana Kannan1-1/+1
When of_link_to_phandle() was implemented initially, there was no way to tell if device_link_add() was failing because the supplier device hasn't been parsed yet, hasn't been added yet, the links were creating a cycle, etc. Some of these were transient errors that'd go away at a later point. However, with the current set of improved checks, if device_link_add() fails, it'll only be for permanent errors like cycles or out-of-memory errors. Also, with the addition of DL_FLAG_SYNC_STATE_ONLY flag [1] to device links, all the valid dependency cycles due to "proxy" device links (needed for correctness of sync_state() device callback) will never fail device_link_add() due to cycles. So, continuing to retry failing device links (by returning -EAGAIN) is no longer useful. At worst, it prevents platforms from setting fw_devlink=on (or better) because it prevents proper boot up. So, let's not do that anymore. kmemleak reports several memory leaks from devicetree unittest. This is the fix for problem 5 of 5. When overlay 'overlay_bad_add_dup_prop' is applied, the apply code properly detects that a memory leak will occur if the overlay is removed since the duplicate property is located in a base devicetree node and reports via printk(): OF: overlay: WARNING: memory leak will occur if overlay removed, property: /testcase-data-2/substation@100/motor-1/rpm_avail OF: overlay: WARNING: memory leak will occur if overlay removed, property: /testcase-data-2/substation@100/motor-1/rpm_avail The overlay is removed when the apply code detects multiple changesets modifying the same property. This is reported via printk(): OF: overlay: ERROR: multiple fragments add, update, and/or delete property /testcase-data-2/substation@100/motor-1/rpm_avail As a result of this error, the overlay is removed resulting in the expected memory leak. Add another device node level to the overlay so that the duplicate property is located in a node added by the overlay, thus no memory leak will occur when the overlay is removed. Thus users of kmemleak will not have to debug this leak in the future. kernel test robot reported "WARNING: held lock freed!" triggered by unittest_gpio_remove(), which should not have been called because the related gpio overlay was not tracked. Another overlay that was tracked had previously used the same id as the gpio overlay but had not been untracked when the overlay was removed. Thus the clean up function of_unittest_destroy_tracked_overlays() incorrectly attempted to remove the reused overlay id. The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2], introduced in C99: struct foo { int stuff; struct boo array[]; }; By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on. Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by this change: "Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1] This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle. Randconfig testing found compile errors in drivers/of/unittest.c if CONFIG_GPIOLIB is not set because CONFIG_OF_GPIO depends on CONFIG_GPIOLIB. Make the gpio overlay test depend on CONFIG_OF_GPIO. No code is modified, it is only moved to a different location and protected with #ifdef CONFIG_OF_GPIO. An empty of_unittest_overlay_gpio() is added in the #else. Some tests in the devicetree unittests result in printk messages from the code being tested. It can be difficult to determine whether the messages are the result of unittest or are potentially reporting bugs that should be fixed. The most recent example of a person asking whether to be concerned about these messages is [1]. Add annotations for all messages triggered by unittests, except KERN_DEBUG messages. (KERN_DEBUG is a special case due to the possible interaction of CONFIG_DYNAMIC_DEBUG.) The format of the annotations is expected to change when unittests are converted to use the kunit infrastructure when the broader testing community has an opportunity to discuss the implementation of annotations of test triggered messages. Geert reports that gpio hog nodes are not properly processed when the gpio hog node is added via an overlay reply and provides an RFC patch to fix the problem [1]. Certain SoCs need to support a large amount of reserved memory regions. For example, Qualcomm's SM8150 SoC requires that 20 regions of memory be reserved for a variety of reasons (e.g. loading a peripheral subsystem's firmware image into a particular space). When adding more reserved memory regions to cater to different usecases, the remaining number of reserved memory regions--12 to be exact--becomes too small. Currently, the DMA offset and mask for a device are set based only on the first 'dma-ranges' entry. We should really be using all the entries. The kernel doesn't yet support multiple offsets and sizes, so the best we can do is to find the biggest size for a single offset. The algorithm is copied from acpi_dma_get_range(). There's an OF helper called of_dma_is_coherent(), which checks if a device has a "dma-coherent" property to see if the device is coherent for DMA. But on some platforms devices are coherent by default, and on some platforms it's not possible to update existing device trees to add the "dma-coherent" property. So add a Kconfig symbol to allow arch code to tell of_dma_is_coherent() that devices are coherent by default, regardless of the presence of the property. Select that symbol on powerpc when NOT_COHERENT_CACHE is not set, ie. when the system has a coherent cache. The CPU's idle state nodes are currently parsed at the common cpuidle DT library, but also when initializing data for specific CPU idle operations, as in the PSCI cpuidle driver case and qcom-spm cpuidle case. To avoid open-coding, let's introduce of_get_cpu_state_node(), which takes the device node for the CPU and the index to the requested idle state node, as in-parameters. In case a corresponding idle state node is found, it returns the node with the refcount incremented for it, else it returns NULL. Moreover, for PSCI there are two options to describe the CPU's idle states [1], either via a flattened description or a hierarchical layout. Hence, let's take both options into account. The phandle cache was added to speed up of_find_node_by_phandle() by avoiding walking the whole DT to find a matching phandle. The implementation has several shortcomings: - The cache is designed to work on a linear set of phandle values. This is true for dtc generated DTs, but not for other cases such as Power. - The cache isn't enabled until of_core_init() and a typical system may see hundreds of calls to of_find_node_by_phandle() before that point. - The cache is freed and re-allocated when the number of phandles changes. - It takes a raw spinlock around a memory allocation which breaks on RT. Change the implementation to a fixed size and use hash_32() as the cache index. This greatly simplifies the implementation. It avoids the need for any re-alloc of the cache and taking a reference on nodes in the cache. We only have a single source of removing cache entries which is of_detach_node(). Using hash_32() removes any assumption on phandle values improving the hit rate for non-linear phandle values. The effect on linear values using hash_32() is about a 10% collision. The chances of thrashing on colliding values seems to be low. To compare performance, I used a RK3399 board which is a pretty typical system. I found that just measuring boot time as done previously is noisy and may be impacted by other things. Also bringing up secondary cores causes some issues with measuring, so I booted with 'nr_cpus=1'. With no caching, calls to of_find_node_by_phandle() take about 20124 us for 1248 calls. There's an additional 288 calls before time keeping is up. Using the average time per hit/miss with the cache, we can calculate these calls to take 690 us (277 hit / 11 miss) with a 128 entry cache and 13319 us with no cache or an uninitialized cache. Comparing the 3 implementations the time spent in of_find_node_by_phandle() is: no cache: 20124 us (+ 13319 us) 128 entry cache: 5134 us (+ 690 us) current cache: 819 us (+ 13319 us) We could move the allocation of the cache earlier to improve the current cache, but that just further complicates the situation as it needs to be after slab is up, so we can't do it when unflattening (which uses memblock). Commit 5e6669387e22 ("of/platform: Pause/resume sync state during init and of_platform_populate()") paused/resumed sync state during init only if Linux had parsed and populated a devicetree. However, the check for that (of_have_populated_dt()) can change after of_platform_default_populate_init() executes. One example of this is when devicetree unittests are enabled. This causes an unmatched pause/resume of sync state. To avoid this, just unconditionally pause/resume sync state during init.
