2011-06-25sfc: Fix mapping of reset reasons and flags to methodsBen Hutchings1-22/+5
There are certain hardware bugs that may occur on Falcon during normal operation, that require a reset to recover from. We try to minimise disruption by keeping the PHY running, following a reset sequence labelled as 'invisible'. Siena does not suffer from these hardware bugs, so we have not implemented an 'invisible' reset sequence. However, if a similar error does occur (due to a hardware fault or software bug) then the code shared with Falcon will wrongly assume that the PHY is not being reset. Since the mapping of reset reasons (internal) and flags (ethtool) to methods must differ significantly between NIC types, move it into per-NIC-type functions (replacing the insufficient reset_world_flags field). 2011-04-30ethtool: cosmetic: Use ethtool ethtool_cmd_speed APIDavid Decotigny1-1/+1
This updates the network drivers so that they don't access the ethtool_cmd::speed field directly, but use ethtool_cmd_speed() instead. For most of the drivers, these changes are purely cosmetic and don't fix any problem, such as for those 1GbE/10GbE drivers that indirectly call their own ethtool get_settings()/mii_ethtool_gset(). The changes are meant to enforce code consistency and provide robustness with future larger throughputs, at the expense of a few CPU cycles for each ethtool operation. All drivers compiled with make allyesconfig ion x86_64 have been updated. 2011-04-15ethtool: allow custom interval for physical identificationAllan, Bruce W1-3/+3
When physical identification of an adapter is done by toggling the mechanism on and off through software utilizing the set_phys_id operation, it is done with a fixed duration for both on and off states. Some drivers may want to set a custom duration for the on/off intervals. This patch changes the API so the return code from the driver's entry point when it is called with ETHTOOL_ID_ACTIVE can specify the frequency at which to cycle the on/off states, and updates the drivers that have already been converted to use the new set_phys_id and use the synchronous method for identifying an adapter. The physical identification frequency set in the updated drivers is based on how it was done prior to the introduction of set_phys_id. Compile tested only. We currently make no use of siena_nic_data::fw_{version,build} except to format the firmware version for ethtool_get_drvinfo(). Since we only read the version at start of day, this information is incorrect after an MC firmware update. Remove the cached version information and read it via MCDI whenever it is requested. efx_channel_get_{rx,tx}_queue() currently return NULL if the channel isn't used for traffic in that direction. In most cases this is a bug, but some callers rely on it as an existence test. Add existence test functions efx_channel_has_{rx_queue,tx_queues}() and use them as appropriate. Change efx_channel_get_{rx,tx}_queue() to assert that the requested queue exists. 2010-07-08net: fix 64 bit counters on 32 bit archesEric Dumazet1-1/+2
There is a small possibility that a reader gets incorrect values on 32 bit arches. SNMP applications could catch incorrect counters when a 32bit high part is changed by another stats consumer/provider. One way to solve this is to add a rtnl_link_stats64 param to all ndo_get_stats64() methods, and also add such a parameter to dev_get_stats(). Rule is that we are not allowed to use dev->stats64 as a temporary storage for 64bit stats, but a caller provided area (usually on stack) Old drivers (only providing get_stats() method) need no changes. ethtool_op_set_flags() does not check for unsupported flags, and has no way of doing so. This means it is not suitable for use as a default implementation of ethtool_ops::set_flags. Add a 'supported' parameter specifying the flags that the driver and hardware support, validate the requested flags against this, and change all current callers to pass this parameter. Change some other trivial implementations of ethtool_ops::set_flags to call ethtool_op_set_flags(). SFC9000-family boards do not all use MDIO PHYs, so we need a different test for PHY aliveness. Introduce a PHY operation test_alive(). For PHYs attached to Falcon, use a common implementation based on the existing PHY MDIO test. For PHYs managed through MCDI, use the appropriate MCDI request. Change test name in ethtool from 'core mdio' to 'phy alive'. Rename test_results::mdio to phy_alive and test_results::phy to phy_ext. 2009-11-30sfc: Refactor link configurationBen Hutchings1-20/+41
Refactor PHY, MAC and NIC configuration operations so that the existing link configuration can be re-pushed with: efx->phy_op->reconfigure(efx); efx->mac_op->reconfigure(efx); and a new configuration with: efx->nic_op->reconfigure_port(efx); (plus locking and error-checking). We have not held the link settings in software (aside from flow control), and have relied on asking the hardware what they are. This is a problem because in some cases the hardware may no longer be in a state to tell us. In particular, if an entire multi-port board is reset through one port, the driver bindings to other ports have no chance to save settings before recovering. We only actually need to keep track of the autonegotiation settings, so add an ethtool advertising mask to struct efx_nic, initialise it in PHY init and update it as necessary. Remove now-unneeded uses of efx_phy_op::{get,set}_settings() and struct ethtool_cmd. Much of this was done by Steve Hodgson <shodgson@solarflare.com>.
