2023-12-06char/agp: Remove frontend codeThomas Zimmermann6-1491/+0
The AGP subsystem supports a user-space interface via /dev/agpgart. It is only enabled with DRM support for mode setting in user space. (i.e., CONFIG_DRM_LEGACY). All of that DRM code has been removed and the option will go away. Hence remove the AGP frontend. Modern DRM drivers with kernel mode setting handle AGP support internally. 2023-09-11arch: Remove Itanium (IA-64) architectureArd Biesheuvel4-1226/+1
The Itanium architecture is obsolete, and an informal survey [0] reveals that any residual use of Itanium hardware in production is mostly HP-UX or OpenVMS based. The use of Linux on Itanium appears to be limited to enthusiasts that occasionally boot a fresh Linux kernel to see whether things are still working as intended, and perhaps to churn out some distro packages that are rarely used in practice. None of the original companies behind Itanium still produce or support any hardware or software for the architecture, and it is listed as 'Orphaned' in the MAINTAINERS file, as apparently, none of the engineers that contributed on behalf of those companies (nor anyone else, for that matter) have been willing to support or maintain the architecture upstream or even be responsible for applying the odd fix. The Intel firmware team removed all IA-64 support from the Tianocore/EDK2 reference implementation of EFI in 2018. (Itanium is the original architecture for which EFI was developed, and the way Linux supports it deviates significantly from other architectures.) Some distros, such as Debian and Gentoo, still maintain [unofficial] ia64 ports, but many have dropped support years ago. While the argument is being made [1] that there is a 'for the common good' angle to being able to build and run existing projects such as the Grid Community Toolkit [2] on Itanium for interoperability testing, the fact remains that none of those projects are known to be deployed on Linux/ia64, and very few people actually have access to such a system in the first place. Even if there were ways imaginable in which Linux/ia64 could be put to good use today, what matters is whether anyone is actually doing that, and this does not appear to be the case. There are no emulators widely available, and so boot testing Itanium is generally infeasible for ordinary contributors. GCC still supports IA-64 but its compile farm [3] no longer has any IA-64 machines. GLIBC would like to get rid of IA-64 [4] too because it would permit some overdue code cleanups. In summary, the benefits to the ecosystem of having IA-64 be part of it are mostly theoretical, whereas the maintenance overhead of keeping it supported is real. So let's rip off the band aid, and remove the IA-64 arch code entirely. This follows the timeline proposed by the Debian/ia64 maintainer [5], which removes support in a controlled manner, leaving IA-64 in a known good state in the most recent LTS release. Other projects will follow once the kernel support is removed. The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it was merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes. There is a copy of alloc_gatt_pages() and free_gatt_pages in several architectures in arch/$ARCH/include/asm/agp.h. All the copies do exactly the same: alias alloc_gatt_pages() to __get_free_pages(GFP_KERNEL) and alias free_gatt_pages() to free_pages(). Define alloc_gatt_pages() and free_gatt_pages() in drivers/char/agp/agp.h and drop per-architecture definitions. 2022-07-15agp/intel: Use per device iommu checkLu Baolu1-10/+7
The IOMMU subsystem has already provided an interface to query whether the IOMMU hardware is enabled for a specific device. This changes the check from Intel specific intel_iommu_gfx_mapped (globally exported by the Intel IOMMU driver) to probing the presence of IOMMU on a specific device using the generic device_iommu_mapped(). This follows commit cca084692394a ("drm/i915: Use per device iommu check") which converted drm/i915 driver to use device_iommu_mapped(). In an attempt to isolate platforms needing intel-gtt.ko, commit 7a5c922377b4 ("drm/i915/gt: Split intel-gtt functions by arch") moved way too much inside gt/intel_gt_gmch.c, even the functions that don't callout to this module. Rename the symbols to make the separation clear. 2022-04-05x86/amd_nb: Unexport amd_cache_northbridges()Muralidhara M K1-1/+1
amd_cache_northbridges() is exported by amd_nb.c and is called by amd64-agp.c and amd64_edac.c modules at module_init() time so that NB descriptors are properly cached before those drivers can use them. However, the init_amd_nbs() initcall already does call amd_cache_northbridges() unconditionally and thus makes sure the NB descriptors are enumerated. That initcall is a fs_initcall type which is on the 5th group (starting from 0) of initcalls that gets run in increasing numerical order by the init code. The module_init() call is turned into an __initcall() in the MODULE=n case and those are device-level initcalls, i.e., group 6. Therefore, the northbridges caching is already finished by the time module initialization starts and thus the correct initialization order is retained. Unexport amd_cache_northbridges(), update dependent modules to call amd_nb_num() instead. While at it, simplify the checks in amd_cache_northbridges(). Note that the frontend is only the /dev/agp ioctl interface, which per Adam is only used by the i810 userspace drivers. Patch series "mm: consolidate definitions of page table accessors", v2. The low level page table accessors (pXY_index(), pXY_offset()) are duplicated across all architectures and sometimes more than once. For instance, we have 31 definition of pgd_offset() for 25 supported architectures. Most of these definitions are actually identical and typically it boils down to, e.g. static inline unsigned long pmd_index(unsigned long address) { return (address >> PMD_SHIFT) & (PTRS_PER_PMD - 1); } static inline pmd_t *pmd_offset(pud_t *pud, unsigned long address) { return (pmd_t *)pud_page_vaddr(*pud) + pmd_index(address); } These definitions can be shared among 90% of the arches provided XYZ_SHIFT, PTRS_PER_XYZ and xyz_page_vaddr() are defined. For architectures that really need a custom version there is always possibility to override the generic version with the usual ifdefs magic. These patches introduce include/linux/pgtable.h that replaces include/asm-generic/pgtable.h and add the definitions of the page table accessors to the new header. This patch (of 12): The linux/mm.h header includes <asm/pgtable.h> to allow inlining of the functions involving page table manipulations, e.g. pte_alloc() and pmd_alloc(). So, there is no point to explicitly include <asm/pgtable.h> in the files that include <linux/mm.h>.
