2022-07-25powerpc: Fix all occurences of duplicate wordsMichael Ellerman1-3/+3
Since commit 87c78b612f4f ("powerpc: Fix all occurences of "the the"") fixed "the the", there's now a steady stream of patches fixing other duplicate words. Just fix them all at once, to save the overhead of dealing with individual patches for each case. This leaves a few cases of "that that", which in some contexts is correct. The ppc_inst_as_str() macro tries to make printing variable length, aka "prefixed", instructions convenient. It mostly succeeds, but it does hide an on-stack buffer, which triggers stack protector. In all cases where ppc_inst_as_str() is used the output is not really meant for user consumption, it's almost always indicative of a kernel bug. A simpler solution is to just print the value as an unsigned long. For normal instructions the output is identical. For prefixed instructions the value is printed as a single 64-bit quantity, whereas previously the low half was printed first. But that is good enough for debug output, especially as prefixed instructions will be rare in kernel code in practice. Since commit 0c0c52306f47 ("powerpc: Only support DYNAMIC_FTRACE not static"), CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE is always selected when CONFIG_FUNCTION_TRACER is selected. To avoid confusion and have the reader wonder what's happen when CONFIG_FUNCTION_TRACER is selected and CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE is not, use CONFIG_FUNCTION_TRACER in ifdefs instead of CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE. As CONFIG_FUNCTION_GRAPH_TRACER depends on CONFIG_FUNCTION_TRACER, ftrace.o doesn't need to appear for both symbols in Makefile. Inlining ftrace_modify_code(), it increases a bit the size of ftrace code but brings 5% improvment on ftrace activation. Usually in C files we let gcc decide what to do but here it really help to 'help' gcc to decide to inline, thought we don't want to force it with an __always_inline that would be too much for CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE. When we have CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_ARGS, prepare_ftrace_return() is called by ftrace_graph_func() otherwise prepare_ftrace_return() is called from assembly. Refactor prepare_ftrace_return() into a static __prepare_ftrace_return() that will be called by both prepare_ftrace_return() and ftrace_graph_func(). It will allow GCC to fold __prepare_ftrace_return() inside ftrace_graph_func(). 2022-03-08powerpc: Move C prototypes out of asm-prototypes.hChristophe Leroy1-1/+0
We originally added asm-prototypes.h in commit 42f5b4cacd78 ("powerpc: Introduce asm-prototypes.h"). It's purpose was for prototypes of C functions that are only called from asm, in order to fix sparse warnings about missing prototypes. A few months later Nick added a different use case in commit 4efca4ed05cb ("kbuild: modversions for EXPORT_SYMBOL() for asm") for C prototypes for exported asm functions. This is basically the inverse of our original usage. Since then we've added various prototypes to asm-prototypes.h for both reasons, meaning we now need to unstitch it all. Dispatch prototypes of C functions into relevant headers and keep only the prototypes for functions defined in assembly. 'struct ppc_inst' is an internal representation of an instruction, but in-memory instructions are and will remain a table of 'u32' forever. It also helps locating ab-use of 'struct ppc_inst' dereference. 2020-07-23powerpc: Add a ppc_inst_as_str() helperJordan Niethe1-13/+13
There are quite a few places where instructions are printed, this is done using a '%x' format specifier. With the introduction of prefixed instructions, this does not work well. Currently in these places, ppc_inst_val() is used for the value for %x so only the first word of prefixed instructions are printed. When the instructions are word instructions, only a single word should be printed. For prefixed instructions both the prefix and suffix should be printed. To accommodate both of these situations, instead of a '%x' specifier use '%s' and introduce a helper, __ppc_inst_as_str() which returns a char *. The char * __ppc_inst_as_str() returns is buffer that is passed to it by the caller. It is cumbersome to require every caller of __ppc_inst_as_str() to now declare a buffer. To make it more convenient to use __ppc_inst_as_str(), wrap it in a macro that uses a compound statement to allocate a buffer on the caller's stack before calling it. Currently unsigned ints are used to represent instructions on powerpc. This has worked well as instructions have always been 4 byte words. However, ISA v3.1 introduces some changes to instructions that mean this scheme will no longer work as well. This change is Prefixed Instructions. A prefixed instruction is made up of a word prefix followed by a word suffix to make an 8 byte double word instruction. No matter the endianness of the system the prefix always comes first. Prefixed instructions are only planned for powerpc64. Introduce a ppc_inst type to represent both prefixed and word instructions on powerpc64 while keeping it possible to exclusively have word instructions on powerpc32. Recently in commit fbf508da7440 ("powerpc: split compat syscall table out from native table") we changed the layout of the system call table. Instead of having two entries for each syscall number, one for the regular entry point and one for the compat entry point, we now have separate tables for regular and compat entry points. This inadvertently broke syscall tracing (CONFIG_FTRACE_SYSCALLS), because our implementation of arch_syscall_addr() knew about the layout of the table (it did nr * 2). The function_graph_enter() function does the work of calling the function graph hook function and the management of the shadow stack, simplifying the work done in the architecture dependent prepare_ftrace_return(). Have powerpc use the new code, and remove the shadow stack management as well as having to set up the trace structure. Currently, we expect to be able to reach ftrace_caller() from all ftrace-enabled functions through a single relative branch. With large kernel configs, we see functions outside of 32MB of ftrace_caller() causing ftrace_init() to bail. In such configurations, gcc/ld emits two types of trampolines for mcount(): 1. A long_branch, which has a single branch to mcount() for functions that are one hop away from mcount(): c0000000019e8544 <00031b56.long_branch._mcount>: c0000000019e8544: 4a 69 3f ac b c00000000007c4f0 <._mcount> 2. A plt_branch, for functions that are farther away from mcount(): c0000000051f33f8 <0008ba04.plt_branch._mcount>: c0000000051f33f8: 3d 82 ff a4 addis r12,r2,-92 c0000000051f33fc: e9 8c 04 20 ld r12,1056(r12) c0000000051f3400: 7d 89 03 a6 mtctr r12 c0000000051f3404: 4e 80 04 20 bctr We can reuse those trampolines for ftrace if we can have those trampolines go to ftrace_caller() instead. However, with ABIv2, we cannot depend on r2 being valid. As such, we use only the long_branch trampolines by patching those to instead branch to ftrace_caller or ftrace_regs_caller. In addition, we add additional trampolines around .text and .init.text to catch locations that are covered by the plt branches. This allows ftrace to work with most large kernel configurations. For now, we always patch the trampolines to go to ftrace_regs_caller, which is slightly inefficient. This can be optimized further at a later point. Signed-off-by: Naveen N. While this works, this is inefficient if we're not interested in the register state, such as when we're using the function tracer. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman1-0/+1
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches.
