The z3fold compressed pages allocator is rarely used, most users use
zsmalloc. The only disadvantage of zsmalloc in comparison is the
dependency on MMU, and zbud is a more common option for !MMU as it was the
default zswap allocator for a long time.
Historically, zsmalloc had worse latency than zbud and z3fold but offered
better memory savings. This is no longer the case as shown by a simple
recent analysis [1]. That analysis showed that z3fold does not have any
advantage over zsmalloc or zbud considering both performance and memory
usage. In a kernel build test on tmpfs in a limited cgroup, z3fold took
3% more time and used 1.8% more memory. The latency of zswap_load() was
7% higher, and that of zswap_store() was 10% higher. Zsmalloc is better
in all metrics.
Moreover, z3fold apparently has latent bugs, which was made noticeable by
a recent soft lockup bug report with z3fold [2]. Switching to zsmalloc
not only fixed the problem, but also reduced the swap usage from 6~8G to
1~2G. Other users have also reported being bitten by mistakenly enabling
z3fold.
Other than hurting users, z3fold is repeatedly causing wasted engineering
effort. Apart from investigating the above bug, it came up in multiple
development discussions (e.g. [3]) as something we need to handle, when
there aren't any legit users (at least not intentionally).
The natural course of action is to deprecate z3fold, and remove in a few
cycles if no objections are raised from active users. Next on the list
should be zbud, as it offers marginal latency gains at the cost of huge
memory waste when compared to zsmalloc. That one will need to wait until
zsmalloc does not depend on MMU.
Rename the user-visible config option from CONFIG_Z3FOLD to
CONFIG_Z3FOLD_DEPRECATED so that users with CONFIG_Z3FOLD=y get a new
prompt with explanation during make oldconfig. Also, remove
CONFIG_Z3FOLD=y from defconfigs.

Commit 6e5f1537833a ("powerpc: Add a 6xx defconfig") said it was copied
from fedore's ppc32 defconfig, but at least since 2015-06-10, Fedora has
dropped this option.[1]
For cgroup v1, if turned on, and there's any cgroup in the "cpu" hierarchy it
needs an RT budget assigned, otherwise the processes in it will not be able to
get RT at all. The problem with RT group scheduling is that it requires the
budget assigned but there's no way we could assign a default budget, since the
values to assign are both upper and lower time limits, are absolute, and need to
be sum up to < 1 for each individal cgroup. That means we cannot really come up
with values that would work by default in the general case.[1]
For cgroup v2, it's almost unusable as well. If it turned on, the cpu controller
can only be enabled when all RT processes are in the root cgroup. But it will
lose the benefits of cgroup v2 if all RT process were placed in the same cgroup.
systemd also doesn't support it.[2]

CONFIG_BASE_FULL is equivalent to !CONFIG_BASE_SMALL and is enabled by
default: CONFIG_BASE_SMALL is the special case to take care of.
So, remove CONFIG_BASE_FULL and move the config choice to
CONFIG_BASE_SMALL (which defaults to 'n')

BASE_SMALL.
For defconfigs explicitely enabling BASE_FULL, drop it as it is the

32-bit powerpc kernels can be built for one of 5 sub-arches, see
Kconfig.cputype:
PPC_BOOK3S_32: "512x/52xx/6xx/7xx/74xx/82xx/83xx/86xx"
PPC_85xx: "Freescale 85xx"
PPC_8xx: "Freescale 8xx"
40x: "AMCC 40x"
44x: "AMCC 44x, 46x or 47x"
By default none of these are built for a plain allmodconfig build,
because it selects PPC64 which builds a 64-bit kernel.
There is already a ppc32_allmodconfig, which enables PPC_BOOK3S_32.
Add similar targets for the other 32-bit sub-arches to increase build
coverage:
ppc40x_allmodconfig
ppc44x_allmodconfig
ppc8xx_allmodconfig
ppc85xx_allmodconfig

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net-next
Pull networking updates from Paolo Abeni:
"The most interesting thing is probably the networking structs
reorganization and a significant amount of changes is around
self-tests.
Core & protocols:
- Analyze and reorganize core networking structs (socks, netdev,
netns, mibs) to optimize cacheline consumption and set up build
time warnings to safeguard against future header changes
This improves TCP performances with many concurrent connections up
to 40%
- Add page-pool netlink-based introspection, exposing the memory
usage and recycling stats. This helps indentify bad PP users and
possible leaks
- Refine TCP/DCCP source port selection to no longer favor even
source port at connect() time when IP_LOCAL_PORT_RANGE is set. This
lowers the time taken by connect() for hosts having many active
connections to the same destination
- Refactor the TCP bind conflict code, shrinking related socket
structs
- Refactor TCP SYN-Cookie handling, as a preparation step to allow
arbitrary SYN-Cookie processing via eBPF
- Tune optmem_max for 0-copy usage, increasing the default value to
128KB and namespecifying it
- Allow coalescing for cloned skbs coming from page pools, improving
RX performances with some common configurations
- Reduce extension header parsing overhead at GRO time
- Add bridge MDB bulk deletion support, allowing user-space to
request the deletion of matching entries
- Reorder nftables struct members, to keep data accessed by the
datapath first
- Introduce TC block ports tracking and use. This allows supporting
multicast-like behavior at the TC layer
- Remove UAPI support for retired TC qdiscs (dsmark, CBQ and ATM) and
classifiers (RSVP and tcindex)
- More data-race annotations
- Extend the diag interface to dump TCP bound-only sockets
- Conditional notification of events for TC qdisc class and actions
- Support for WPAN dynamic associations with nearby devices, to form
a sub-network using a specific PAN ID
- Implement SMCv2.1 virtual ISM device support
- Add support for Batman-avd mulicast packet type
BPF:
- Tons of verifier improvements:
- BPF register bounds logic and range support along with a large
test suite
- log improvements
- complete precision tracking support for register spills
- track aligned STACK_ZERO cases as imprecise spilled registers.
This improves the verifier "instructions processed" metric from
single digit to 50-60% for some programs
- support for user's global BPF subprogram arguments with few
commonly requested annotations for a better developer
experience
- support tracking of BPF_JNE which helps cases when the compiler
transforms (unsigned) "a > 0" into "if a == 0 goto xxx" and the
like
- several fixes
- Add initial TX metadata implementation for AF_XDP with support in
mlx5 and stmmac drivers. Two types of offloads are supported right
now, that is, TX timestamp and TX checksum offload
- Fix kCFI bugs in BPF all forms of indirect calls from BPF into
kernel and from kernel into BPF work with CFI enabled. This allows
BPF to work with CONFIG_FINEIBT=y
- Change BPF verifier logic to validate global subprograms lazily
instead of unconditionally before the main program, so they can be
guarded using BPF CO-RE techniques
- Support uid/gid options when mounting bpffs
- Add a new kfunc which acquires the associated cgroup of a task
within a specific cgroup v1 hierarchy where the latter is
identified by its id
- Extend verifier to allow bpf_refcount_acquire() of a map value
field obtained via direct load which is a use-case needed in
sched_ext
- Add BPF link_info support for uprobe multi link along with bpftool
integration for the latter
- Support for VLAN tag in XDP hints
- Remove deprecated bpfilter kernel leftovers given the project is
developed in user-space (https://github.com/facebook/bpfilter)
Misc:
- Support for parellel TC self-tests execution
- Increase MPTCP self-tests coverage
- Updated the bridge documentation, including several so-far
undocumented features
- Convert all the net self-tests to run in unique netns, to avoid
random failures due to conflict and allow concurrent runs
- Add TCP-AO self-tests
- Add kunit tests for both cfg80211 and mac80211
- Autogenerate Netlink families documentation from YAML spec
- Add yml-gen support for fixed headers and recursive nests, the tool
can now generate user-space code for all genetlink families for
which we have specs
- A bunch of additional module descriptions fixes
- Catch incorrect freeing of pages belonging to a page pool
Driver API:
- Rust abstractions for network PHY drivers; do not cover yet the
full C API, but already allow implementing functional PHY drivers
in rust
- Introduce queue and NAPI support in the netdev Netlink interface,
allowing complete access to the device <> NAPIs <> queues
relationship
- Introduce notifications filtering for devlink to allow control
application scale to thousands of instances
- Improve PHY validation, requesting rate matching information for
each ethtool link mode supported by both the PHY and host
- Add support for ethtool symmetric-xor RSS hash
- ACPI based Wifi band RFI (WBRF) mitigation feature for the AMD
platform
- Expose pin fractional frequency offset value over new DPLL generic
netlink attribute

Commit 8c5fa3b5c4df ("powerpc/64: Make ELFv2 the default for big-endian
builds"), merged in Linux-6.5-rc1 changes the calling ABI in a way
that is incompatible with the current code for the PS3's LV1 hypervisor
calls.
This change just adds the line '# CONFIG_PPC64_BIG_ENDIAN_ELF_ABI_V2 is not set'
to the ps3_defconfig file so that the PPC64_ELF_ABI_V1 is used.
Fixes run time errors like these:

Inspired by Salvatore Mesoraca's earlier[1] efforts to provide some
in-tree guidance for kernel hardening Kconfig options, add a new fragment
named "hardening-basic.config" (along with some arch-specific fragments)
that enable a basic set of kernel hardening options that have the least
(or no) performance impact and remove a reasonable set of legacy APIs.
Using this fragment is as simple as running "make hardening.config".
More extreme fragments can be added[2] in the future to cover all the
recognized hardening options, and more per-architecture files can be
added too.
For now, document the fragments directly via comments. Perhaps .rst
documentation can be generated from them in the future (rather than the
other way around).

ReiserFS has been deprecated for a year and a half, yet is still built
as part of a defconfig kernel.
According to commit eb103a51640e ("reiserfs: Deprecate reiserfs"), the
filesystem is slated to be removed in 2025. Remove it from the defconfig
profiles now, as part of its deprecation process.

Currently the Kconfig fragments in kernel/configs and arch/*/configs
that aren't used internally aren't discoverable through "make help",
which consists of hard-coded lists of config fragments. Instead, list
all the fragment targets that have a "# Help: " comment prefix so the
targets can be generated dynamically.
Add logic to the Makefile to search for and display the fragment and
comment. Add comments to fragments that are intended to be direct targets.

In 5.10 commit 5e84dd547bce ("powerpc/configs/skiroot: Enable some more
hardening options") set SLUB_DEBUG_ON.
When 5.14 came around, commit 792702911f58 ("slub: force on
no_hash_pointers when slub_debug is enabled") print all the
pointers when SLUB_DEBUG_ON is set. This was fine, but in 5.12 commit
5ead723a20e0 ("lib/vsprintf: no_hash_pointers prints all addresses as
unhashed") added the warning at boot.
Disable SLAB_DEBUG_ON as we don't want the nasty warning. We have
CONFIG_EXPERT so SLAB_DEBUG is enabled. We do lose the settings in
DEBUG_DEFAULT_FLAGS, but it's not clear that these should have been
always-on anyway.

Commit a2225d931f75 ("autofs: remove left-over autofs4 stubs")
promised the removal of the fs/autofs/Kconfig fragment for AUTOFS4_FS
within a couple of releases, but five years later this still has not
happened yet, and AUTOFS4_FS is still enabled in 63 defconfigs.
Get rid of it mechanically:
git grep -l CONFIG_AUTOFS4_FS -- '*defconfig' |
xargs sed -i 's/AUTOFS4_FS/AUTOFS_FS/'
Also just remove the AUTOFS4_FS config option stub. Anybody who hasn't
regenerated their config file in the last five years will need to just
get the new name right when they do.

The MPC8541/8548/8555 Configurable Development System (CDS) were the
vehicle used to provide evaluation of the 1st e500-v2 CPUs around 2007.
Similar to the earlier MPC83xx-MDS systems we removed, the "brains"
exist on a PCI-X card, but additional connectors exist to the right of
the PCI-X slot, two structural metal pins are used to provide stability
in a vertical ATX mounting, and the CPU is now on a daughter-card vs. a
clamped down BGA.
Given the extra complexity and risk of connector damage, the 8548CDS
I had access to came pre-assembled in a basic white Antec case common
for that era, and I'm inclined to assume that was the default.
Power was typical "Pentium4" 2005 ATX - the main 20 pin connector went
to the PCI ATX form factor backplane, and the 4 pin black/yellow went
to the CPU card.
Like previous evaluation boards, they attempted to provide break-out
connectors for as many features as possible, and that made for a fairly
complex looking system.
In any case, these are over 15 years old, and fairly complex systems,
originally made for a small group of industry related people, and made
for use where quiet fan operation wasn't important. Given that, it
makes sense to remove support from them in 2023.

Based on the revision history in the manual(s), these e500-v1
platforms were first available around 2002.
Like a lot of evaluation boards, they attempted to provide break-out
connectors for all possible features, and that combined with four
PCI-X slots (and the age/era) meant for a considerably large board.
As I recall it, from a Linux point of view, the biggest difference
between 8540 and 8560 was in the UART implementation, and that is
reflected in a diff of the defconfigs.
In any case, these are over 20 years old, and by today's standards
only have a small amount of DDR1 memory, and were not widely available.
Given that, it makes sense to remove support from them in 2023.

As discussed at LSF/MM [1] [2] and with no objections raised there,
deprecate the SLAB allocator. Rename the user-visible option so that
users with CONFIG_SLAB=y get a new prompt with explanation during make
oldconfig, while make olddefconfig will just switch to SLUB.
In all defconfigs with CONFIG_SLAB=y remove the line so those also
switch to SLUB. Regressions due to the switch should be reported to
linux-mm and slab maintainers.

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net-next
Pull networking updates from Paolo Abeni:
"Core:
- Introduce a config option to tweak MAX_SKB_FRAGS. Increasing the
default value allows for better BIG TCP performances
- Reduce compound page head access for zero-copy data transfers
- RPS/RFS improvements, avoiding unneeded NET_RX_SOFTIRQ when
possible
- Threaded NAPI improvements, adding defer skb free support and
unneeded softirq avoidance
- Address dst_entry reference count scalability issues, via false
sharing avoidance and optimize refcount tracking
- Add lockless accesses annotation to sk_err[_soft]
- Optimize again the skb struct layout
- Extends the skb drop reasons to make it usable by multiple
subsystems
- Better const qualifier awareness for socket casts
BPF:
- Add skb and XDP typed dynptrs which allow BPF programs for more
ergonomic and less brittle iteration through data and
variable-sized accesses
- Add a new BPF netfilter program type and minimal support to hook
BPF programs to netfilter hooks such as prerouting or forward
- Add more precise memory usage reporting for all BPF map types
- Adds support for using {FOU,GUE} encap with an ipip device
operating in collect_md mode and add a set of BPF kfuncs for
controlling encap params
- Allow BPF programs to detect at load time whether a particular
kfunc exists or not, and also add support for this in light
skeleton
- Bigger batch of BPF verifier improvements to prepare for upcoming
BPF open-coded iterators allowing for less restrictive looping
capabilities
- Rework RCU enforcement in the verifier, add kptr_rcu and enforce
BPF programs to NULL-check before passing such pointers into kfunc
- Add support for kptrs in percpu hashmaps, percpu LRU hashmaps and
in local storage maps
- Enable RCU semantics for task BPF kptrs and allow referenced kptr
tasks to be stored in BPF maps
- Add support for refcounted local kptrs to the verifier for allowing
shared ownership, useful for adding a node to both the BPF list and
rbtree
- Add BPF verifier support for ST instructions in
convert_ctx_access() which will help new -mcpu=v4 clang flag to
start emitting them
- Add ARM32 USDT support to libbpf
- Improve bpftool's visual program dump which produces the control
flow graph in a DOT format by adding C source inline annotations
Protocols:
- IPv4: Allow adding to IPv4 address a 'protocol' tag. Such value
indicates the provenance of the IP address
- IPv6: optimize route lookup, dropping unneeded R/W lock acquisition
- Add the handshake upcall mechanism, allowing the user-space to
implement generic TLS handshake on kernel's behalf
- Bridge: support per-{Port, VLAN} neighbor suppression, increasing
resilience to nodes failures
- SCTP: add support for Fair Capacity and Weighted Fair Queueing
schedulers
- MPTCP: delay first subflow allocation up to its first usage. This
will allow for later better LSM interaction
- xfrm: Remove inner/outer modes from input/output path. These are
not needed anymore
- WiFi:
- reduced neighbor report (RNR) handling for AP mode
- HW timestamping support
- support for randomized auth/deauth TA for PASN privacy
- per-link debugfs for multi-link
- TC offload support for mac80211 drivers
- mac80211 mesh fast-xmit and fast-rx support
- enable Wi-Fi 7 (EHT) mesh support
Netfilter:
- Add nf_tables 'brouting' support, to force a packet to be routed
instead of being bridged
- Update bridge netfilter and ovs conntrack helpers to handle IPv6
Jumbo packets properly, i.e. fetch the packet length from
hop-by-hop extension header. This is needed for BIT TCP support
- The iptables 32bit compat interface isn't compiled in by default
anymore
- Move ip(6)tables builtin icmp matches to the udptcp one. This has
the advantage that icmp/icmpv6 match doesn't load the
iptables/ip6tables modules anymore when iptables-nft is used
- Extended netlink error report for netdevice in flowtables and
netdev/chains. Allow for incrementally add/delete devices to netdev
basechain. Allow to create netdev chain without device
Driver API:
- Remove redundant Device Control Error Reporting Enable, as PCI core
has already error reporting enabled at enumeration time
- Move Multicast DB netlink handlers to core, allowing devices other
then bridge to use them
- Allow the page_pool to directly recycle the pages from safely
localized NAPI
- Implement lockless TX queue stop/wake combo macros, allowing for
further code de-duplication and sanitization
- Add YNL support for user headers and struct attrs
- Add partial YNL specification for devlink
- Add partial YNL specification for ethtool
- Add tc-mqprio and tc-taprio support for preemptible traffic classes
- Add tx push buf len param to ethtool, specifies the maximum number
of bytes of a transmitted packet a driver can push directly to the
underlying device
- Add basic LED support for switch/phy
- Add NAPI documentation, stop relaying on external links
- Convert dsa_master_ioctl() to netdev notifier. This is a
preparatory work to make the hardware timestamping layer selectable
by user space
- Add transceiver support and improve the error messages for CAN-FD
controllers

Rather than trying to keep multiple configs up to date, make
pseries_defconfig an alias for ppc64le_guest_defconfig.
NOTE, pseries_defconfig was a big endian config, but this commit
switches it to little endian.
Almost all distros are ppc64le these days, so little endian is much more
likely to be what a user wants when they build for "pseries".
For an actual big endian guest, use ppc64_guest_defconfig.

Incorporate the generic kvm_guest.config into the powerpc guest configs,
ppc64[le]_guest_defconfig.
This brings in some useful options, in particular 9P support, and also
means future additions to the generic file will be automatically picked
up by the powerpc configs.
