2022-08-15nios2: add force_successful_syscall_return()Al Viro2-0/+8
If we use the ancient SysV syscall ABI, we'd better have tell the kernel how to claim that a negative return value is a success. Use ->orig_r2 for that - it's inaccessible via ptrace, so it's a fair game for changes and it's normally[*] non-negative on return from syscall. Set to -1; syscall is not going to be restart-worthy by definition, so we won't interfere with that use either. [*] the only exception is rt_sigreturn(), where we skip the entire messing with r1/r2 anyway. 2022-08-15nios2: fix syscall restart checksAl Viro1-1/+1
sys_foo() returns -512 (aka -ERESTARTSYS) => do_signal() sees 512 in r2 and 1 in r1. sys_foo() returns 512 => do_signal() sees 512 in r2 and 0 in r1. The former is restart-worthy; the latter obviously isn't. 2022-07-18mm/mmap: drop ARCH_HAS_VM_GET_PAGE_PROTAnshuman Khandual1-1/+0
Now all the platforms enable ARCH_HAS_GET_PAGE_PROT. They define and export own vm_get_page_prot() whether custom or standard DECLARE_VM_GET_PAGE_PROT. 2022-07-18nios2/mm: enable ARCH_HAS_VM_GET_PAGE_PROTAnshuman Khandual3-16/+21

2022-06-17mm: avoid unnecessary page fault retires on shared memory typesPeter Xu1-0/+4
I observed that for each of the shared file-backed page faults, we're very likely to retry one more time for the 1st write fault upon no page. It's because we'll need to release the mmap lock for dirty rate limit purpose with balance_dirty_pages_ratelimited() (in fault_dirty_shared_page()). Then after that throttling we return VM_FAULT_RETRY. We did that probably because VM_FAULT_RETRY is the only way we can return to the fault handler at that time telling it we've released the mmap lock. However that's not ideal because it's very likely the fault does not need to be retried at all since the pgtable was well installed before the throttling, so the next continuous fault (including taking mmap read lock, walk the pgtable, etc.) could be in most cases unnecessary. It's not only slowing down page faults for shared file-backed, but also add more mmap lock contention which is in most cases not needed at all. To observe this, one could try to write to some shmem page and look at "pgfault" value in /proc/vmstat, then we should expect 2 counts for each shmem write simply because we retried, and vm event "pgfault" will capture that. To make it more efficient, add a new VM_FAULT_COMPLETED return code just to show that we've completed the whole fault and released the lock. It's also a hint that we should very possibly not need another fault immediately on this page because we've just completed it. This patch provides a ~12% perf boost on my aarch64 test VM with a simple program sequentially dirtying 400MB shmem file being mmap()ed and these are the time it needs: Before: 650.980 ms (+-1.94%) After: 569.396 ms (+-1.38%) I believe it could help more than that. We need some special care on GUP and the s390 pgfault handler (for gmap code before returning from pgfault), the rest changes in the page fault handlers should be relatively straightforward. Another thing to mention is that mm_account_fault() does take this new fault as a generic fault to be accounted, unlike VM_FAULT_RETRY. I explicitly didn't touch hmm_vma_fault() and break_ksm() because they do not handle VM_FAULT_RETRY even with existing code, so I'm literally keeping them as-is. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace Pull kthread updates from Eric Biederman: "This updates init and user mode helper tasks to be ordinary user mode tasks. Commit 40966e316f86 ("kthread: Ensure struct kthread is present for all kthreads") caused init and the user mode helper threads that call kernel_execve to have struct kthread allocated for them. This struct kthread going away during execve in turned made a use after free of struct kthread possible. Here, commit 343f4c49f243 ("kthread: Don't allocate kthread_struct for init and umh") is enough to fix the use after free and is simple enough to be backportable. The rest of the changes pass struct kernel_clone_args to clean things up and cause the code to make sense. In making init and the user mode helpers tasks purely user mode tasks I ran into two complications. The function task_tick_numa was detecting tasks without an mm by testing for the presence of PF_KTHREAD. The initramfs code in populate_initrd_image was using flush_delayed_fput to ensuere the closing of all it's file descriptors was complete, and flush_delayed_fput does not work in a userspace thread. 2022-05-14nios2: use fallback for random_get_entropy() instead of zeroJason A. Donenfeld1-0/+3
In the event that random_get_entropy() can't access a cycle counter or similar, falling back to returning 0 is really not the best we can do. Instead, at least calling random_get_entropy_fallback() would be preferable, because that always needs to return _something_, even falling back to jiffies eventually. It's not as though random_get_entropy_fallback() is super high precision or guaranteed to be entropic, but basically anything that's not zero all the time is better than returning zero all the time. The first half is really generic; it verifies that the kernel image and System.map exist, then executes ~/bin/${INSTALLKERNEL} or /sbin/${INSTALLKERNEL} if available. 2022-05-07fork: Generalize PF_IO_WORKER handlingEric W. Biederman1-4/+3
Add fn and fn_arg members into struct kernel_clone_args and test for them in copy_thread (instead of testing for PF_KTHREAD | PF_IO_WORKER). This allows any task that wants to be a user space task that only runs in kernel mode to use this functionality. The code on x86 is an exception and still retains a PF_KTHREAD test because x86 unlikely everything else handles kthreads slightly differently than user space tasks that start with a function. The functions that created tasks that start with a function have been updated to set ".fn" and ".fn_arg" instead of ".stack" and ".stack_size". These functions are fork_idle(), create_io_thread(), kernel_thread(), and user_mode_thread(). Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20220506141512.516114-4-ebiederm@xmission.com Signed-off-by: "Eric W. There are no remaining callers of set_fs(), so CONFIG_SET_FS can be removed globally, along with the thread_info field and any references to it. This turns access_ok() into a cheaper check against TASK_SIZE_MAX. As CONFIG_SET_FS is now gone, drop all remaining references to set_fs()/get_fs(), mm_segment_t, user_addr_max() and uaccess_kernel(). 2022-02-25uaccess: generalize access_ok()Arnd Bergmann1-10/+1
There are many different ways that access_ok() is defined across architectures, but in the end, they all just compare against the user_addr_max() value or they accept anything. Provide one definition that works for most architectures, checking against TASK_SIZE_MAX for user processes or skipping the check inside of uaccess_kernel() sections. For architectures without CONFIG_SET_FS(), this should be the fastest check, as it comes down to a single comparison of a pointer against a compile-time constant, while the architecture specific versions tend to do something more complex for historic reasons or get something wrong. Type checking for __user annotations is handled inconsistently across architectures, but this is easily simplified as well by using an inline function that takes a 'const void __user *' argument. A handful of callers need an extra __user annotation for this. Some architectures had trick to use 33-bit or 65-bit arithmetic on the addresses to calculate the overflow, however this simpler version uses fewer registers, which means it can produce better object code in the end despite needing a second (statically predicted) branch. The end-game which I have not yet reached yet is for fatal signals that generate coredumps to be short-circuit deliverable from complete_signal, for force_siginfo_to_task not to require changing userspace configured signal delivery state, and for the ptrace stops to always happen in locations where we can guarantee on all architectures that the all of the registers are saved and available on the stack. Removal of profile_task_ext, profile_munmap, and profile_handoff_task are the big successes for dead code removal this round. A bunch of small bug fixes are included, as most of the issues reported were small enough that they would not affect bisection so I simply added the fixes and did not fold the fixes into the changes they were fixing. There was a bug that broke coredumps piped to systemd-coredump. I dropped the change that caused that bug and replaced it entirely with something much more restrained. Unfortunately that required some rebasing. Some successes after this set of changes: There are few enough calls to do_exit to audit in a reasonable amount of time. The lifetime of struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. 2022-01-08kbuild: do not quote string values in include/config/auto.confMasahiro Yamada1-1/+1
The previous commit fixed up all shell scripts to not include include/config/auto.conf. Now that include/config/auto.conf is only included by Makefiles, we can change it into a more Make-friendly form. Previously, Kconfig output string values enclosed with double-quotes (both in the .config and include/config/auto.conf): CONFIG_X="foo bar" Unlike shell, Make handles double-quotes (and single-quotes as well) verbatim. We must rip them off when used. There are some patterns: [1] $(patsubst "%",%,$(CONFIG_X)) [2] $(CONFIG_X:"%"=%) [3] $(subst ",,$(CONFIG_X)) [4] $(shell echo $(CONFIG_X)) These are not only ugly, but also fragile. [1] and [2] do not work if the value contains spaces, like CONFIG_X=" foo bar " [3] does not work correctly if the value contains double-quotes like CONFIG_X="foo\"bar" [4] seems to work better, but has a cost of forking a process. Anyway, quoted strings were always PITA for our Makefiles. This commit changes Kconfig to stop quoting in include/config/auto.conf. 2021-12-13exit: Add and use make_task_dead.Eric W. Biederman1-2/+2
There are two big uses of do_exit. The first is it's design use to be the guts of the exit(2) system call. The second use is to terminate a task after something catastrophic has happened like a NULL pointer in kernel code. Add a function make_task_dead that is initialy exactly the same as do_exit to cover the cases where do_exit is called to handle catastrophic failure. In time this can probably be reduced to just a light wrapper around do_task_dead. For now keep it exactly the same so that there will be no behavioral differences introducing this new concept. Replace all of the uses of do_exit that use it for catastraphic task cleanup with make_task_dead to make it clear what the code is doing. As part of this rename rewind_stack_do_exit rewind_stack_and_make_dead. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Biederman" <ebiederm@xmission.com>

Pull memory folios from Matthew Wilcox: "Add memory folios, a new type to represent either order-0 pages or the head page of a compound page. This should be enough infrastructure to support filesystems converting from pages to folios. The point of all this churn is to allow filesystems and the page cache to manage memory in larger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. The original plan was to use compound pages like THP does, but I ran into problems with some functions expecting only a head page while others expect the precise page containing a particular byte. The folio type allows a function to declare that it's expecting only a head page. Almost incidentally, this allows us to remove various calls to VM_BUG_ON(PageTail(page)) and compound_head(). This converts just parts of the core MM and the page cache. For 5.17, we intend to convert various filesystems (XFS and AFS are ready; other filesystems may make it) and also convert more of the MM and page cache to folios. For 5.18, multi-page folios should be ready. The multi-page folios offer some improvement to some workloads. The 80% win is real, but appears to be an artificial benchmark (postgres startup, which isn't a serious workload). Real workloads (eg building the kernel, running postgres in a steady state, etc) seem to benefit between 0-10%. I haven't heard of any performance losses as a result of this series. Nobody has done any serious performance tuning; I imagine that tweaking the readahead algorithm could provide some more interesting wins. There are also other places where we could choose to create large folios and currently do not, such as writes that are larger than PAGE_SIZE. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "The main content for 5.15 is a series that cleans up the handling of strncpy_from_user() and strnlen_user(), removing a lot of slightly incorrect versions of these in favor of the lib/strn*.c helpers that implement these correctly and more efficiently. The only architectures that retain a private version now are mips, ia64, um and parisc. I had offered to convert those at all, but Thomas Bogendoerfer wanted to keep the mips version for the moment until he had a chance to do regression testing.
