2012-10-13vfs: define struct filename and have getname() return itJeff Layton1-2/+2
getname() is intended to copy pathname strings from userspace into a kernel buffer. The result is just a string in kernel space. It would however be quite helpful to be able to attach some ancillary info to the string. For instance, we could attach some audit-related info to reduce the amount of audit-related processing needed. When auditing is enabled, we could also call getname() on the string more than once and not need to recopy it from userspace. This patchset converts the getname()/putname() interfaces to return a struct instead of a string. For now, the struct just tracks the string in kernel space and the original userland pointer for it. Later, we'll add other information to the struct as it becomes convenient. Signed-off-by: Jeff Layton <jlayton@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

2012-10-09mm: fix-up zone present pagesJianguo Wu1-0/+1
I think zone->present_pages indicates pages that buddy system can management, it should be: zone->present_pages = spanned pages - absent pages - bootmem pages, but is now: zone->present_pages = spanned pages - absent pages - memmap pages. spanned pages: total size, including holes. absent pages: holes. bootmem pages: pages used in system boot, managed by bootmem allocator. memmap pages: pages used by page structs. This may cause zone->present_pages less than it should be. For example, numa node 1 has ZONE_NORMAL and ZONE_MOVABLE, it's memmap and other bootmem will be allocated from ZONE_MOVABLE, so ZONE_NORMAL's present_pages should be spanned pages - absent pages, but now it also minus memmap pages(free_area_init_core), which are actually allocated from ZONE_MOVABLE. When offlining all memory of a zone, this will cause zone->present_pages less than 0, because present_pages is unsigned long type, it is actually a very large integer, it indirectly caused zone->watermark[WMARK_MIN] becomes a large integer(setup_per_zone_wmarks()), than cause totalreserve_pages become a large integer(calculate_totalreserve_pages()), and finally cause memory allocating failure when fork process(__vm_enough_memory()). [root@localhost ~]# dmesg -bash: fork: Cannot allocate memory I think the bug described in http://marc.info/?l=linux-mm&m=134502182714186&w=2 is also caused by wrong zone present pages. This patch intends to fix-up zone->present_pages when memory are freed to buddy system on x86_64 and IA64 platforms. 2012-10-09readahead: fault retry breaks mmap file read random detectionShaohua Li1-0/+1
.fault now can retry. The retry can break state machine of .fault. In filemap_fault, if page is miss, ra->mmap_miss is increased. In the second try, since the page is in page cache now, ra->mmap_miss is decreased. And these are done in one fault, so we can't detect random mmap file access. Add a new flag to indicate .fault is tried once. In the second try, skip ra->mmap_miss decreasing. The filemap_fault state machine is ok with it. I only tested x86, didn't test other archs, but looks the change for other archs is obvious, but who knows :) Signed-off-by: Shaohua Li <shaohua.li@fusionio.com> Cc: Rik van Riel <riel@redhat.com> Cc: Wu Fengguang <fengguang.wu@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2012-10-09mm: hugetlb: add arch hook for clearing page flags before entering poolWill Deacon1-0/+4
The core page allocator ensures that page flags are zeroed when freeing pages via free_pages_check. A number of architectures (ARM, PPC, MIPS) rely on this property to treat new pages as dirty with respect to the data cache and perform the appropriate flushing before mapping the pages into userspace. This can lead to cache synchronisation problems when using hugepages, since the allocator keeps its own pool of pages above the usual page allocator and does not reset the page flags when freeing a page into the pool. This patch adds a new architecture hook, arch_clear_hugepage_flags, so that architectures which rely on the page flags being in a particular state for fresh allocations can adjust the flags accordingly when a page is freed into the pool. 2012-10-09mm: kill vma flag VM_RESERVED and mm->reserved_vm counterKonstantin Khlebnikov2-2/+3
A long time ago, in v2.4, VM_RESERVED kept swapout process off VMA, currently it lost original meaning but still has some effects: | effect | alternative flags -+------------------------+--------------------------------------------- 1| account as reserved_vm | VM_IO 2| skip in core dump | VM_IO, VM_DONTDUMP 3| do not merge or expand | VM_IO, VM_DONTEXPAND, VM_HUGETLB, VM_PFNMAP 4| do not mlock | VM_IO, VM_DONTEXPAND, VM_HUGETLB, VM_PFNMAP This patch removes reserved_vm counter from mm_struct. Seems like nobody cares about it, it does not exported into userspace directly, it only reduces total_vm showed in proc. Thus VM_RESERVED can be replaced with VM_IO or pair VM_DONTEXPAND | VM_DONTDUMP. remap_pfn_range() and io_remap_pfn_range() set VM_IO|VM_DONTEXPAND|VM_DONTDUMP. remap_vmalloc_range() set VM_DONTEXPAND | VM_DONTDUMP. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/konrad/xen Pull ADM Xen support from Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk: Features: * Allow a Linux guest to boot as initial domain and as normal guests on Xen on ARM (specifically ARMv7 with virtualized extensions). PV console, block and network frontend/backends are working. Bug-fixes: * Fix compile linux-next fallout. * Fix PVHVM bootup crashing. The Xen-unstable hypervisor (so will be 4.3 in a ~6 months), supports ARMv7 platforms. The goal in implementing this architecture is to exploit the hardware as much as possible. That means use as little as possible of PV operations (so no PV MMU) - and use existing PV drivers for I/Os (network, block, console, etc). This is similar to how PVHVM guests operate in X86 platform nowadays - except that on ARM there is no need for QEMU. git://git.infradead.org/users/dhowells/linux-headers Pull preparatory patches for user API disintegration from David Howells: "The patches herein prepare for the extraction of the Userspace API bits from the various header files named in the Kbuild files. New subdirectories are created under either include/uapi/ or arch/x/include/uapi/ that correspond to the subdirectory containing that file under include/ or arch/x/include/. The new subdirs under the uapi/ directory are populated with Kbuild files that mostly do nothing at this time. Further patches will disintegrate the headers in each original directory and fill in the Kbuild files as they do it. These patches also: (1) fix up #inclusions of "foo.h" rather than <foo.h>. (2) Remove some redundant #includes from the DRM code. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs Pull vfs update from Al Viro: - big one - consolidation of descriptor-related logics; almost all of that is moved to fs/file.c (BTW, I'm seriously tempted to rename the result to fd.c. As it is, we have a situation when file_table.c is about handling of struct file and file.c is about handling of descriptor tables; the reasons are historical - file_table.c used to be about a static array of struct file we used to have way back). A lot of stray ends got cleaned up and converted to saner primitives, disgusting mess in android/binder.c is still disgusting, but at least doesn't poke so much in descriptor table guts anymore. A bunch of relatively minor races got fixed in process, plus an ext4 struct file leak. - related thing - fget_light() partially unuglified; see fdget() in there (and yes, it generates the code as good as we used to have). - also related - bits of Cyrill's procfs stuff that got entangled into that work; _not_ all of it, just the initial move to fs/proc/fd.c and switch of fdinfo to seq_file. - Alex's fs/coredump.c spiltoff - the same story, had been easier to take that commit than mess with conflicts. The rest is a separate pile, this was just a mechanical code movement. - a few misc patches all over the place. Not all for this cycle, there'll be more (and quite a few currently sit in akpm's tree)." Fix up trivial conflicts in the android binder driver, and some fairly simple conflicts due to two different changes to the sock_alloc_file() interface ("take descriptor handling from sock_alloc_file() to callers" vs "net: Providing protocol type via system.sockprotoname xattr of /proc/PID/fd entries" adding a dentry name to the socket) * 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs: (72 commits) MAX_LFS_FILESIZE should be a loff_t compat: fs: Generic compat_sys_sendfile implementation fs: push rcu_barrier() from deactivate_locked_super() to filesystems btrfs: reada_extent doesn't need kref for refcount coredump: move core dump functionality into its own file coredump: prevent double-free on an error path in core dumper usb/gadget: fix misannotations fcntl: fix misannotations ceph: don't abuse d_delete() on failure exits hypfs: ->d_parent is never NULL or negative vfs: delete surplus inode NULL check switch simple cases of fget_light to fdget new helpers: fdget()/fdput() switch o2hb_region_dev_write() to fget_light() proc_map_files_readdir(): don't bother with grabbing files make get_file() return its argument vhost_set_vring(): turn pollstart/pollstop into bool switch prctl_set_mm_exe_file() to fget_light() switch xfs_find_handle() to fget_light() switch xfs_swapext() to fget_light() ...

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace Pull user namespace changes from Eric Biederman: "This is a mostly modest set of changes to enable basic user namespace support. This allows the code to code to compile with user namespaces enabled and removes the assumption there is only the initial user namespace. Everything is converted except for the most complex of the filesystems: autofs4, 9p, afs, ceph, cifs, coda, fuse, gfs2, ncpfs, nfs, ocfs2 and xfs as those patches need a bit more review. The strategy is to push kuid_t and kgid_t values are far down into subsystems and filesystems as reasonable. Leaving the make_kuid and from_kuid operations to happen at the edge of userspace, as the values come off the disk, and as the values come in from the network. Letting compile type incompatible compile errors (present when user namespaces are enabled) guide me to find the issues. The most tricky areas have been the places where we had an implicit union of uid and gid values and were storing them in an unsigned int. Those places were converted into explicit unions. I made certain to handle those places with simple trivial patches. Out of that work I discovered we have generic interfaces for storing quota by projid. I had never heard of the project identifiers before. Adding full user namespace support for project identifiers accounts for most of the code size growth in my git tree. Ultimately there will be work to relax privlige checks from "capable(FOO)" to "ns_capable(user_ns, FOO)" where it is safe allowing root in a user names to do those things that today we only forbid to non-root users because it will confuse suid root applications. While I was pushing kuid_t and kgid_t changes deep into the audit code I made a few other cleanups. I capitalized on the fact we process netlink messages in the context of the message sender. I removed usage of NETLINK_CRED, and started directly using current->tty. Some of these patches have also made it into maintainer trees, with no problems from identical code from different trees showing up in linux-next. After reading through all of this code I feel like I might be able to win a game of kernel trivial pursuit." 2012-09-28Make most arch asm/module.h files use asm-generic/module.hDavid Howells2-4/+4
Use the mapping of Elf_[SPE]hdr, Elf_Addr, Elf_Sym, Elf_Dyn, Elf_Rel/Rela, ELF_R_TYPE() and ELF_R_SYM() to either the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version into asm-generic/module.h for all arches bar MIPS. Also, use the generic definition mod_arch_specific where possible. To this end, I've defined three new config bools: (*) HAVE_MOD_ARCH_SPECIFIC Arches define this if they don't want to use the empty generic mod_arch_specific struct. (*) MODULES_USE_ELF_RELA Arches define this if their modules can contain RELA records. This causes the Elf_Rela mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate_add() to be defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message. (*) MODULES_USE_ELF_REL Arches define this if their modules can contain REL records. This causes the Elf_Rel mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate() to be defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message. Note that it is possible to allow both REL and RELA records: m68k and mips are two arches that do this. With this, some arch asm/module.h files can be deleted entirely and replaced with a generic-y marker in the arch Kbuild file. Additionally, I have removed the bits from m32r and score that handle the unsupported type of relocation record as that's now handled centrally. Move the code that finds out to which context we account the cputime into generic layer. Archs that consider the whole time spent in the idle task as idle time (ia64, powerpc) can rely on the generic vtime_account() and implement vtime_account_system() and vtime_account_idle(), letting the generic code to decide when to call which API. Archs that have their own meaning of idle time, such as s390 that only considers the time spent in CPU low power mode as idle time, can just override vtime_account(). 2012-09-23ia64: Add missing RCU idle APIs on idle loopPaul E. McKenney1-0/+3
Traditionally, the entire idle task served as an RCU quiescent state. But when RCU read side critical sections started appearing within the idle loop, this traditional strategy became untenable. The fix was to create new RCU APIs named rcu_idle_enter() and rcu_idle_exit(), which must be called by each architecture's idle loop so that RCU can tell when it is safe to ignore a given idle CPU. Unfortunately, this fix was never applied to ia64, a shortcoming remedied by this commit. Reported by: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Paul E. 2012-09-19PCI: Provide a default pcibios_update_irq()Thierry Reding1-8/+0
Most architectures implement this in exactly the same way. Instead of having each architecture duplicate this function, provide a single implementation in the core and make it a weak symbol so that it can be overridden on architectures where it is required. 2012-09-19PCI: Discard __init annotations for pci_fixup_irqs() and related functionsThierry Reding1-1/+1
Remove the __init annotations in order to keep pci_fixup_irqs() around after init (e.g. for hotplug). This requires the same change for the implementation of pcibios_update_irq() on all architectures. While at it, all __devinit annotations are removed as well, since they will be useless now that HOTPLUG is always on.
