Choosing big-endian vs little-endian kernels in Kconfig has not worked
correctly since the introduction of CONFIG_ARCH_MULTIPLATFORM a long
time ago.
The problems is that CONFIG_BIG_ENDIAN depends on
ARCH_SUPPORTS_BIG_ENDIAN, which can set by any one platform
in the config, but would actually have to be supported by all
of them.
This was mostly ok for ARMv6/ARMv7 builds, since these are BE8 and
tend to just work aside from problems in nonportable device drivers.
For ARMv4/v5 machines, CONFIG_BIG_ENDIAN and CONFIG_ARCH_MULTIPLATFORM
were never set together, so this was disabled on all those machines
except for IXP4xx.
As IXP4xx can now become part of ARCH_MULTIPLATFORM, it seems better to
formalize this logic: all ARMv4/v5 platforms get an explicit dependency
on being either big-endian (ixp4xx) or little-endian (the rest). We may
want to fix ixp4xx in the future to support both, but it does not work
in LE mode at the moment.
For the ARMv6/v7 platforms, there are two ways this could be handled
a) allow both modes only for platforms selecting
'ARCH_SUPPORTS_BIG_ENDIAN' today, but only LE mode for the
others, given that these were added intentionally at some
point.
b) allow both modes everwhere, given that it was already possible
to build that way by e.g. selecting ARCH_VIRT, and that the
list is not an accurate reflection of which platforms may or
may not work.
Out of these, I picked b) because it seemed slighly more logical
to me.

of_get_mac_address() returns a "const void*" pointer to a MAC address.
Lately, support to fetch the MAC address by an NVMEM provider was added.
But this will only work with platform devices. It will not work with
PCI devices (e.g. of an integrated root complex) and esp. not with DSA
ports.
There is an of_* variant of the nvmem binding which works without
devices. The returned data of a nvmem_cell_read() has to be freed after
use. On the other hand the return of_get_mac_address() points to some
static data without a lifetime. The trick for now, was to allocate a
device resource managed buffer which is then returned. This will only
work if we have an actual device.
Change it, so that the caller of of_get_mac_address() has to supply a
buffer where the MAC address is written to. Unfortunately, this will
touch all drivers which use the of_get_mac_address().
Usually the code looks like:
const char *addr;
addr = of_get_mac_address(np);
if (!IS_ERR(addr))
ether_addr_copy(ndev->dev_addr, addr);
This can then be simply rewritten as:
of_get_mac_address(np, ndev->dev_addr);
Sometimes is_valid_ether_addr() is used to test the MAC address.
of_get_mac_address() already makes sure, it just returns a valid MAC
address. Thus we can just test its return code. But we have to be
careful if there are still other sources for the MAC address before the
of_get_mac_address(). In this case we have to keep the
is_valid_ether_addr() call.
The following coccinelle patch was used to convert common cases to the
new style. Afterwards, I've manually gone over the drivers and fixed the
return code variable: either used a new one or if one was already
available use that. Mansour Moufid, thanks for that coccinelle patch!

Split out all the bits that are purely for dma_map_ops implementations
and related code into a new <linux/dma-map-ops.h> header so that they
don't get pulled into all the drivers. That also means the architecture
specific <asm/dma-mapping.h> is not pulled in by <linux/dma-mapping.h>
any more, which leads to a missing includes that were pulled in by the
x86 or arm versions in a few not overly portable drivers.

The MMU off code path in ll_get_coherency_base() attempts to decide
whether the coherency fabric is mapped by testing the value of
coherency_base, which carries its virtual address if its mapped, and
0x0 otherwise.
However, what the code actually does is take the virtual address of
the coherency_base symbol, and compare it with 0x0, which are never
equal, and so the branch is never taken. In fact, with the MMU off,
dereferencing the VA of coherency_base is not possible to begin with,
nor can its value be relied upon with the MMU off since it is not
cleaned to the Dcache as is done with coherency_phys_base in
armada_370_coherency_init().
Instead, the value of coherency_phys_base is returned, which results
in the correct behavior since it will be 0x0 as well if the coherency
fabric is not mapped, and it is accessible with the MMU off. So just
drop the comparison and the branch.

Kirkwood has always had the ability to retrieve the local-mac-address
from the hardware (usually this was configured by the bootloader). This
is particularly useful when dealing with a legacy non-DT aware
bootloader.
The "error" message just indicated that the board used an old bootloader
and in many cases users can't do anything about this. The message
probably should have been pr_info() to inform the user that the kernel
has been helpful but rather than than let's remove it entirely to make
the kernel less noisy.

We need to maintain backwards compatibility with device trees that don't
define an enable method. At the same time we want the device tree to be
able to specify an enable-method and have it stick.
Previously by having smp assigned in the DT_MACHINE definition this
would be picked up by setup_arch() and override whatever
arm_dt_init_cpu_maps() had configured. Now we move the initial
assignment of default smp_ops to a dt_fixup and let
arm_dt_init_cpu_maps() override that if the device tree defines an
enable-method.

With CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE, memcpy uses the declared size of operands to
detect buffer overflows. If src or dest is declared as a char, attempts to
copy more than byte will result in a fortify_panic().
Address this problem in mvebu_setup_boot_addr_wa() by declaring

a couple addressof operators to avoid "arithmetic on pointer to an

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 11139
and resulted in the first patch in this series.
If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930
and resulted in the second patch in this series.
- if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1
and that resulted in the third patch in this series.
- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

As we already did for Armada XP switch from virt_to_phys() to
__pa_symbol().
The reason for it was well explained by Mark Rutland so let's quote him:
"virt_to_phys() is intended to operate on the linear/direct mapping of
RAM.
__pa_symbol() is intended to operate on the kernel mapping, which may
not be in the linear/direct mapping on all architectures. e.g. arm64 and
x86_64 map the kernel image and RAM separately.
On 32-bit ARM the kernel image mapping is tied to the linear/direct
mapping, so that works, but as it's semantically wrong (and broken for
generic code), the DEBUG_VIRTUAL checks complain."

Compared to the armada-xp the 98DX3336 uses different registers to set
the boot address for the secondary CPU so a new enable-method is needed.
This will only work if the machine definition doesn't define an overall

When the state names got added a script was used to add the extra argument
to the calls. The script basically converted the state constant to a
string, but the cleanup to convert these strings into meaningful ones did
not happen.
Replace all the useless strings with 'subsys/xxx/yyy:state' strings which

Since the commit bd3677ff31a3 ("clk: mvebu: Remove corediv clock from
Armada XP"), the corediv clk is no more selected for Armada XP, however
this clock is used for Armada XP using the compatible
armada-370-corediv-clock.
While since commit 1594d568c6e3 ("clk: mvebu: Move corediv config to
mvebu config") Armada 38x and Armada 375 got corediv support again, not
only Armada XP was missed but also Armada 39x.
Actually all the SoC selecting MVEBU_V7 config need this clock:
git grep "\-corediv-clock" arch/arm/boot/dts
arch/arm/boot/dts/armada-370-xp.dtsi: compatible = "marvell,armada-370-corediv-clock";
arch/arm/boot/dts/armada-375.dtsi: compatible = "marvell,armada-375-corediv-clock";
arch/arm/boot/dts/armada-38x.dtsi: compatible = "marvell,armada-380-corediv-clock";
arch/arm/boot/dts/armada-39x.dtsi: compatible = "marvell,armada-390-corediv-clock"
This commit now fixes this behavior by letting MVEBU_V7 select
MVEBU_CLK_COREDIV.

In order for HW I/O coherency to work on Cortex-A9 based Marvell SoCs,
all MMIO registers must be mapped strongly ordered. In commit
1c8c3cf0b5239 ("ARM: 8060/1: mm: allow sub-architectures to override PCI
I/O memory type") we implemented a new function,
pci_ioremap_set_mem_type(), that allow sub-architecture code to override
the memory type used to map PCI I/O regions.
In the discussion around this patch series [1], Arnd Bergmann made the
comment that maybe all PCI I/O regions should be mapped
strongly-ordered, which would have made our proposal to add
pci_ioremap_set_mem_type() irrelevant. So, we submitted a patch [2] that
did what Arnd suggested.
However, Russell in the end merged our initial proposal to add
pci_ioremap_set_mem_type(), but it was never used anywhere. Further
discussion with Arnd and other folks on IRC lead to the conclusion that
in fact using strongly-ordered for all platforms was maybe not
desirable, and therefore, using pci_ioremap_set_mem_type() was the most
appropriate solution.
As a consequence, this commit finally adds the
pci_ioremap_set_mem_type() call in the mach-mvebu platform code, which
was originally part of our initial patch series [3] and is necessary for
the whole mechanism to work.

Until now, our understanding for HW I/O coherency to work on the
Cortex-A9 based Marvell SoC was that only the PCIe regions should be
mapped strongly-ordered. However, we were still encountering some
deadlocks, especially when testing the CESA crypto engine. After
checking with the HW designers, it was concluded that all the MMIO
registers should be mapped as strongly ordered for the HW I/O coherency
mechanism to work properly.
This fixes some easy to reproduce deadlocks with the CESA crypto engine
driver (dmcrypt on a sufficiently large disk partition).
