2025-03-17mm: zbud: remove zbudYosry Ahmed1-6/+4
The zbud compressed pages allocator is rarely used, most users use zsmalloc. zbud consumes much more memory (only stores 1 or 2 compressed pages per physical page). The only advantage of zbud is a marginal performance improvement that by no means justify the memory overhead. Historically, zsmalloc had significantly worse latency than zbud and z3fold but offered better memory savings. This is no longer the case as shown by a simple recent analysis [1]. In a kernel build test on tmpfs in a limited cgroup, zbud 2-3% less time than zsmalloc, but at the cost of using ~32% more memory (1.5G vs 1.13G). The tradeoff does not make sense for zbud in any practical scenario. The only alleged advantage of zbud is not having the dependency on CONFIG_MMU, but CONFIG_SWAP already depends on CONFIG_MMU anyway, and zbud is only used by zswap. Remove zbud after z3fold's removal, leaving zsmalloc as the one and only zpool allocator. Leave the removal of the zpool API (and its associated config options) to a followup cleanup after no more allocators show up. Deprecating zbud for a few cycles before removing it was initially proposed [2], like z3fold was marked as deprecated for 2 cycles [3]. However, Johannes rightfully pointed out that the 2 cycles is too short for most downstream consumers, and z3fold was deprecated first only as a courtesy anyway. 2025-03-17mm/rmap: convert make_device_exclusive_range() to make_device_exclusive()David Hildenbrand2-2/+2
The single "real" user in the tree of make_device_exclusive_range() always requests making only a single address exclusive. The current implementation is hard to fix for properly supporting anonymous THP / large folios and for avoiding messing with rmap walks in weird ways. So let's always process a single address/page and return folio + page to minimize page -> folio lookups. This is a preparation for further changes. Reject any non-anonymous or hugetlb folios early, directly after GUP. While at it, extend the documentation of make_device_exclusive() to clarify some things. 2025-03-16cxl: Remove driverAndrew Donnellan4-500/+28
Remove the cxl driver that provides support for the IBM Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface. Revert or clean up associated code in arch/powerpc that is no longer necessary. cxl has received minimal maintenance for several years, and is not supported on the Power10 processor. We aren't aware of any users who are likely to be using recent kernels. Thanks to Mikey Neuling, Ian Munsie, Daniel Axtens, Frederic Barrat, Christophe Lombard, Philippe Bergheaud, Vaibhav Jain and Alastair D'Silva for their work on this driver over the years. This patch implements support for case-insensitive file name lookups in bcachefs. The implementation uses the same UTF-8 lowering and normalization that ext4 and f2fs is using. More information is provided in Documentation/bcachefs/casefolding.rst Compatibility notes: This uses the new versioning scheme for incompatible features where an incompatible feature is tied to a version number: the superblock says "we may use incompat features up to x" and "incompat features up to x are in use", disallowing mounting by previous versions. Additionally, and old style incompat feature bit is used, so that kernels without utf8 casefolding support know if casefolding specifically is in use and they're allowed to mount. 2025-03-15cxl/pci: Support Global Persistent Flush (GPF)Davidlohr Bueso1-1/+1
Add support for GPF flows. It is found that the CXL specification around this to be a bit too involved from the driver side. And while this should really all handled by the hardware, this patch takes things with a grain of salt. Upon respective port enumeration, both phase timeouts are set to a max of 20 seconds, which is the NMI watchdog default for lockup detection. The premise is that the kernel does not have enough information to set anything better than a max across the board and hope devices finish their GPF flows within the platform energy budget. Timeout detection is based on dirty Shutdown semantics. The driver will mark it as dirty, expecting that the device clear it upon a successful GPF event. The admin may consult the device Health and check the dirty shutdown counter to see if there was a problem with data integrity. 2025-03-14KVM: x86: Introduce Intel specific quirk KVM_X86_QUIRK_IGNORE_GUEST_PATYan Zhao1-0/+22
Introduce an Intel specific quirk KVM_X86_QUIRK_IGNORE_GUEST_PAT to have KVM ignore guest PAT when this quirk is enabled. On AMD platforms, KVM always honors guest PAT. On Intel however there are two issues. First, KVM *cannot* honor guest PAT if CPU feature self-snoop is not supported. Second, UC access on certain Intel platforms can be very slow[1] and honoring guest PAT on those platforms may break some old guests that accidentally specify video RAM as UC. Those old guests may never expect the slowness since KVM always forces WB previously. See [2]. So, introduce a quirk that KVM can enable by default on all Intel platforms to avoid breaking old unmodifiable guests. Newer userspace can disable this quirk if it wishes KVM to honor guest PAT; disabling the quirk will fail if self-snoop is not supported, i.e. if KVM cannot obey the wish. The quirk is a no-op on AMD and also if any assigned devices have non-coherent DMA. This is not an issue, as KVM_X86_QUIRK_CD_NW_CLEARED is another example of a quirk that is sometimes automatically disabled. Convert TDG.VP.VMCALL<ReportFatalError> to KVM_EXIT_SYSTEM_EVENT with a new type KVM_SYSTEM_EVENT_TDX_FATAL and forward it to userspace for handling. TD guest can use TDG.VP.VMCALL<ReportFatalError> to report the fatal error it has experienced. This hypercall is special because TD guest is requesting a termination with the error information, KVM needs to forward the hypercall to userspace anyway, KVM doesn't do parsing or conversion, it just dumps the 16 general-purpose registers to userspace and let userspace decide what to do.
