From 548acf19234dbda5a52d5a8e7e205af46e9da840 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Tony Luck Date: Wed, 17 Feb 2016 10:20:12 -0800 Subject: x86/mm: Expand the exception table logic to allow new handling options Huge amounts of help from Andy Lutomirski and Borislav Petkov to produce this. Andy provided the inspiration to add classes to the exception table with a clever bit-squeezing trick, Boris pointed out how much cleaner it would all be if we just had a new field. Linus Torvalds blessed the expansion with: ' I'd rather not be clever in order to save just a tiny amount of space in the exception table, which isn't really criticial for anybody. ' The third field is another relative function pointer, this one to a handler that executes the actions. However in kernel, sometimes there is a need to privatize a member in case of potential bugs or misuses. Fortunately, the noderef attribute of sparse is a way to privatize a member, as by defining a member as noderef, the address-of operator on the member will produce a noderef pointer to that member, and if anyone wants to dereference that kind of pointers to read or modify the member, sparse will yell. Based on this, __private modifier and related operation ACCESS_PRIVATE() are introduced, which could help detect undesigned public uses of private members of structs.
