[ Upstream commit 7d73872d949c488a1d7c308031d6a9d89b5e0a8b ] When NL80211_TDLS_ENABLE_LINK is called, the code only checks if the station exists but not whether it is actually a TDLS station. This allows the operation to proceed for non-TDLS stations, causing unintended side effects like modifying channel context and HT protection before failing. Add a check for sta->sta.tdls early in the ENABLE_LINK case, before any side effects occur, to ensure the operation is only allowed for actual TDLS peers. 2026-03-25wifi: mac80211: fix NULL deref in mesh_matches_local()Xiang Mei1-0/+3
[ Upstream commit c73bb9a2d33bf81f6eecaa0f474b6c6dbe9855bd ] mesh_matches_local() unconditionally dereferences ie->mesh_config to compare mesh configuration parameters. When called from mesh_rx_csa_frame(), the parsed action-frame elements may not contain a Mesh Configuration IE, leaving ie->mesh_config NULL and triggering a kernel NULL pointer dereference. The other two callers are already safe: - ieee80211_mesh_rx_bcn_presp() checks !elems->mesh_config before calling mesh_matches_local() - mesh_plink_get_event() is only reached through mesh_process_plink_frame(), which checks !elems->mesh_config, too mesh_rx_csa_frame() is the only caller that passes raw parsed elements to mesh_matches_local() without guarding mesh_config. An adjacent attacker can exploit this by sending a crafted CSA action frame that includes a valid Mesh ID IE but omits the Mesh Configuration IE, crashing the kernel. 2026-03-25mac80211: fix crash in ieee80211_chan_bw_change for AP_VLAN stationsFelix Fietkau1-2/+4
commit 672e5229e1ecfc2a3509b53adcb914d8b024a853 upstream. ieee80211_chan_bw_change() iterates all stations and accesses link->reserved.oper via sta->sdata->link[link_id]. For stations on AP_VLAN interfaces (e.g. 4addr WDS clients), sta->sdata points to the VLAN sdata, whose link never participates in chanctx reservations. This leaves link->reserved.oper zero-initialized with chan == NULL, causing a NULL pointer dereference in __ieee80211_sta_cap_rx_bw() when accessing chandef->chan->band during CSA. Resolve the VLAN sdata to its parent AP sdata using get_bss_sdata() before accessing link data. [ Upstream commit 2259d14499d16b115ef8d5d2ddc867e2be7cb5b5 ] Currently, mac80211 only initializes default WMM parameters on the deflink during do_open(). For MLO cases, this leaves the additional links without proper WMM defaults if hostapd does not supply per-link WMM parameters, leading to inconsistent QoS behavior across links. Set default WMM parameters for each link during ieee80211_vif_update_links(), because this ensures all individual links in an MLD have valid WMM settings during bring-up and behave consistently across different BSS. In mesh_rx_csa_frame(), elems->mesh_chansw_params_ie is dereferenced at lines 1638 and 1642 without a prior NULL check: ifmsh->chsw_ttl = elems->mesh_chansw_params_ie->mesh_ttl; ... pre_value = le16_to_cpu(elems->mesh_chansw_params_ie->mesh_pre_value); The mesh_matches_local() check above only validates the Mesh ID, Mesh Configuration, and Supported Rates IEs. It does not verify the presence of the Mesh Channel Switch Parameters IE (element ID 118). When a received CSA action frame omits that IE, ieee802_11_parse_elems() leaves elems->mesh_chansw_params_ie as NULL, and the unconditional dereference causes a kernel NULL pointer dereference. A remote mesh peer with an established peer link (PLINK_ESTAB) can trigger this by sending a crafted SPECTRUM_MGMT/CHL_SWITCH action frame that includes a matching Mesh ID and Mesh Configuration IE but omits the Mesh Channel Switch Parameters IE. No authentication beyond the default open mesh peering is required. [ Upstream commit 3f3d8ff31496874a69b131866f62474eb24ed20a ] In reconfig, in case the driver asks to disconnect during the reconfig, all the keys of the interface are marked as tainted. Then ieee80211_reenable_keys will loop over all the interface keys, and for each one it will a) increment crypto_tx_tailroom_needed_cnt b) call ieee80211_key_enable_hw_accel, which in turn will detect that this key is tainted, so it will mark it as "not in hardware", which is paired with crypto_tx_tailroom_needed_cnt incrementation, so we get two incrementations for each tainted key. Then we get a warning in ieee80211_free_keys. [ Upstream commit a203dbeeca15a9b924f0d51f510921f4bae96801 ] In __sta_info_destroy_part2(), station statistics are requested after the IEEE80211_STA_NONE -> IEEE80211_STA_NOTEXIST transition. This is problematic because the driver may be unable to handle the request due to the STA being in the NOTEXIST state (i.e. if the driver destroys the underlying data when transitioning to NOTEXIST). Move the statistics collection to before the state transition to avoid this issue. [ Upstream commit 5dc6975566f5d142ec53eb7e97af688c45dd314d ] S1G beacons don't contain the DA field as per IEEE80211-2024 9.3.4.3, so the DA broadcast check reads the SA address of the S1G beacon which will subsequently lead to the beacon being dropped. As a result, passive scanning is not possible. Fix this by only performing the check on non-S1G beacons to allow S1G long beacons to be processed during a passive scan. During the transition to use channel contexts throughout, the ability to do injection while in monitor mode concurrent with another interface was lost, since the (virtual) monitor won't have a chanctx assigned in this scenario. It's harder to fix drivers that actually transitioned to using channel contexts themselves, such as mt76, but it's easy to do those that are (still) just using the emulation. Do that. 2026-01-11wifi: mac80211: Discard Beacon frames to non-broadcast addressJouni Malinen1-0/+5
[ Upstream commit 193d18f60588e95d62e0f82b6a53893e5f2f19f8 ] Beacon frames are required to be sent to the broadcast address, see IEEE Std 802.11-2020, 11.1.3.1 ("The Address 1 field of the Beacon .. frame shall be set to the broadcast address"). A unicast Beacon frame might be used as a targeted attack to get one of the associated STAs to do something (e.g., using CSA to move it to another channel). As such, it is better have strict filtering for this on the received side and discard all Beacon frames that are sent to an unexpected address. This is even more important for cases where beacon protection is used. The current implementation in mac80211 is correctly discarding unicast Beacon frames if the Protected Frame bit in the Frame Control field is set to 0. However, if that bit is set to 1, the logic used for checking for configured BIGTK(s) does not actually work. If the driver does not have logic for dropping unicast Beacon frames with Protected Frame bit 1, these frames would be accepted in mac80211 processing as valid Beacon frames even though they are not protected. This would allow beacon protection to be bypassed. While the logic for checking beacon protection could be extended to cover this corner case, a more generic check for discard all Beacon frames based on A1=unicast address covers this without needing additional changes. Address all these issues by dropping received Beacon frames if they are sent to a non-broadcast address. 2026-01-08wifi: mac80211: do not use old MBSSID elementsAloka Dixit1-10/+0
[ Upstream commit a519be2f5d958c5804f2cfd68f1f384291271fab ] When userspace brings down and deletes a non-transmitted profile, it is expected to send a new updated Beacon template for the transmitted profile of that multiple BSSID (MBSSID) group which does not include the removed profile in MBSSID element. This update comes via NL80211_CMD_SET_BEACON. Such updates work well as long as the group continues to have at least one non-transmitted profile as NL80211_ATTR_MBSSID_ELEMS is included in the new Beacon template. But when the last non-trasmitted profile is removed, it still gets included in Beacon templates sent to driver. This happens because when no MBSSID elements are sent by the userspace, ieee80211_assign_beacon() ends up using the element stored from earlier Beacon template. Do not copy old MBSSID elements, instead userspace should always include these when applicable. As the event happens at a specific point in time, the normal timer accuracy is not sufficient in that case. Switch to use wiphy_hrtimer_work so that the accuracy is sufficient. To make this work, use the same clock to store the timestamp. The change is already rejected if netif_carrier_ok(), but of course that's not true yet while connecting. Check for auth_data or assoc_data, so the MAC address cannot be changed. Also more comprehensively check that there are no stations on the interface being changed - if any peer station is added it will know about our address already, so we cannot change it. [ Upstream commit e53f8b12a21c2974b66fa8c706090182da06fff3 ] Currently, when adding the 6 GHz Band Capabilities element, the channel list of the wiphy is checked to determine if 6 GHz is supported for a given virtual interface. However, in a multi-radio wiphy (e.g., one that has both lower bands and 6 GHz combined), the wiphy advertises support for all bands. As a result, the 6 GHz Band Capabilities element is incorrectly included in mesh beacon and station's association request frames of interfaces operating in lower bands, without verifying whether the interface is actually operating in a 6 GHz channel. Fix this by verifying if the interface operates on 6 GHz channel before adding the element. Note that this check cannot be placed directly in ieee80211_put_he_6ghz_cap() as the same function is used to add probe request elements while initiating scan in which case the interface may not be operating in any band's channel. [ Upstream commit 32d340ae675800672e1219444a17940a8efe5cca ] In ieee80211_rx_handle_packet(), if the caller does not provide pubsta information, an attempt is made to find the station using the address 2 (source address) field in the header. Since pubsta is missing, link information such as link_valid and link_id is also unavailable. Now if such a situation comes, and if a matching ML station entry is found based on the source address, currently the packet is dropped due to missing link ID in the status field which is not correct. Hence, to fix this issue, if link_valid is not set and the station is an ML station, make an attempt to find a link station entry using the source address. If a valid link station is found, derive the link ID and proceed with packet processing. Otherwise, drop the packet as per the existing flow. When userspace sets supported rates for a new station via NL80211_CMD_NEW_STATION, it might send a list that's empty or contains only invalid values. Currently, we process these values in sta_link_apply_parameters() without checking the result of ieee80211_parse_bitrates(), which can lead to an empty rates bitmap. A similar issue was addressed for NL80211_CMD_SET_BSS in commit ce04abc3fcc6 ("wifi: mac80211: check basic rates validity"). This patch applies the same approach in sta_link_apply_parameters() for NL80211_CMD_NEW_STATION, ensuring there is at least one valid rate by inspecting the result of ieee80211_parse_bitrates(). Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with Syzkaller. [ Upstream commit 140c6a61d83cbd85adba769b5ef8d61acfa5b392 ] Currently, when a non-DFS channel is brought up and the bandwidth is expanded from 80 MHz to 160 MHz, where the primary 80 MHz is non-DFS and the secondary 80 MHz consists of DFS channels, radar detection fails if radar occurs in the secondary 80 MHz. When the channel is switched from 80 MHz to 160 MHz, with the primary 80 MHz being non-DFS and the secondary 80 MHz consisting of DFS channels, the radar required flag in the channel switch parameters is set to true. However, when using a reserved channel context, it is not updated in sdata, which disables radar detection in the secondary 80 MHz DFS channels. Update the radar required flag in sdata to fix this issue when using a reserved channel context. Hence, add a fix to check if the station lacks valid link support and use its default link ID for rx->link assignment. If the station unexpectedly has valid links, fall back to the default link. This ensures correct link association and prevents potential issues in mixed MLO/non-MLO environments. [ Upstream commit be1ba9ed221ffb95a8bb15f4c83d0694225ba808 ] If we get to the error path of ieee80211_prep_connection, for example because of a FW issue, then ieee80211_vif_set_links is called with 0. But the call to drv_change_vif_links from ieee80211_vif_update_links will probably fail as well, for the same reason. In this case, the valid_links and active_links bitmaps will be reverted to the value of the failing connection. Then, in the next connection, due to the logic of ieee80211_set_vif_links_bitmaps, valid_links will be set to the ID of the new connection assoc link, but the active_links will remain with the ID of the old connection's assoc link. If those IDs are different, we get into a weird state of valid_links and active_links being different. One of the consequences of this state is to call drv_change_vif_links with new_links as 0, since the & operation between the bitmaps will be 0. Since a removal of a link should always succeed, ignore the return value of drv_change_vif_links if it was called to only remove links, which is the case for the ieee80211_prep_connection's error path. That way, the bitmaps will not be reverted to have the value from the failing connection and will have 0, so the next connection will have a good state. 2025-08-20wifi: mac80211: don't complete management TX on SAE commitJohannes Berg1-1/+8
[ Upstream commit 6b04716cdcac37bdbacde34def08bc6fdb5fc4e2 ] When SAE commit is sent and received in response, there's no ordering for the SAE confirm messages. As such, don't call drivers to stop listening on the channel when the confirm message is still expected. This fixes an issue if the local confirm is transmitted later than the AP's confirm, for iwlwifi (and possibly mt76) the AP's confirm would then get lost since the device isn't on the channel at the time the AP transmit the confirm. For iwlwifi at least, this also improves the overall timing of the authentication handshake (by about 15ms according to the report), likely since the session protection won't be aborted and rescheduled. Note that even before this, mgd_complete_tx() wasn't always called for each call to mgd_prepare_tx() (e.g. in the case of WEP key shared authentication), and the current drivers that have the complete callback don't seem to mind. The flag is only set after all fragments have been dequeued and won't allow dequeueing other frames as long as the flag is set. For drivers using ieee80211_txq_schedule_start() this prevents an loop trying to push the queued frames while IEEE80211_TXQ_STOP is set: After setting IEEE80211_TXQ_STOP the driver will call ieee80211_return_txq(). Which calls __ieee80211_schedule_txq(), detects that there sill are frames in the queue and immediately restarts the stopped TXQ. Which can't dequeue any frame and thus starts over the loop. [ Upstream commit c5fd399a24c8e2865524361f7dc4d4a6899be4f4 ] mac80211 identifies a short beacon by the presence of the next TBTT field, however the standard actually doesn't explicitly state that the next TBTT can't be in a long beacon or even that it is required in a short beacon - and as a result this validation does not work for all vendor implementations. The standard explicitly states that an S1G long beacon shall contain the S1G beacon compatibility element as the first element in a beacon transmitted at a TBTT that is not a TSBTT (Target Short Beacon Transmission Time) as per IEEE80211-2024 11.1.3.10.1. This is validated by 9.3.4.3 Table 9-76 which states that the S1G beacon compatibility element is only allowed in the full set and is not allowed in the minimum set of elements permitted for use within short beacons. Correctly identify short beacons by the lack of an S1G beacon compatibility element as the first element in an S1G beacon frame. The CoDel parameter change essentially disables CoDel on slow stations, with some questionable assumptions, as Dave pointed out in [0]. "Active" stations in the last 50ms or so, might have been a better thing to use, but as most people have far more than that associated, we end up with really lousy codel parameters, all the time. Mistake numero uno! 2) The STA_SLOW_THRESHOLD was completely arbitrary in 2016. - sta->cparams.target = MS2TIME(50); This, by itself, was probably not too bad. 30ms might have been better, at the time, when we were battling powersave etc, but 20ms was enough, really, to cover most scenarios, even where we had low rate 2Ghz multicast to cope with. Even then, codel has a hard time finding any sane drop rate at all, with a target this high. - sta->cparams.interval = MS2TIME(300); But this was horrible, a total mistake, that is leading to codel being completely ineffective in almost any scenario on clients or APS. 100ms, even 80ms, here, would be vastly better than this insanity. I'm seeing 5+seconds of delay accumulated in a bunch of otherwise happily fq-ing APs.... 100ms of observed jitter during a flow is enough. Certainly (in 2016) there were interactions with powersave that I did not understand, and still don't, but if you are transmitting in the first place, powersave shouldn't be a problemmmm..... - sta->cparams.ecn = false; At the time we were pretty nervous about ecn, I'm kind of sanguine about it now, and reliably indicating ecn seems better than turning it off for any reason. [...] In production, on p2p wireless, I've had 8ms and 80ms for target and interval for years now, and it works great. I think Dave's arguments above are basically sound on the face of it, and various experimentation with tighter CoDel parameters in the OpenWrt community have show promising results[1]. So I don't think there's any reason to keep this parameter fiddling; hence this revert. Dynamic VLAN multicast traffic utilizes software encryption. Due to this, mac80211 should handle transmitting multicast frames on all links for multicast VLAN traffic. 2025-06-27wifi: mac80211: do not offer a mesh path if forwarding is disabledBenjamin Berg1-2/+4
[ Upstream commit cf1b684a06170d253b47d6a5287821de976435bd ] When processing a PREQ the code would always check whether we have a mesh path locally and reply accordingly. However, when forwarding is disabled then we should not reply with this information as we will not forward data packets down that path. Move the check for dot11MeshForwarding up in the function and skip the mesh path lookup in that case. In the else block, set forward to false so that the rest of the function becomes a no-op and the dot11MeshForwarding check does not need to be duplicated. This explains an effect observed in the Freifunk community where mesh forwarding is disabled. In that case a mesh with three STAs and only bad links in between them, individual STAs would occionally have indirect mpath entries. This should not have happened. 2025-06-27wifi: mac80211: validate SCAN_FLAG_AP in scan request during MLOAditya Kumar Singh1-1/+1
[ Upstream commit 78a7a126dc5b8e3c5a3d4da9f513e0236d2dc1a3 ] When an AP interface is already beaconing, a subsequent scan is not allowed unless the user space explicitly sets the flag NL80211_SCAN_FLAG_AP in the scan request. If this flag is not set, the scan request will be returned with the error code -EOPNOTSUPP. However, this restriction currently applies only to non-ML interfaces. For ML interfaces, scans are allowed without this flag being explicitly set by the user space which is wrong. This is because the beaconing check currently uses only the deflink, which does not get set during MLO. Hence to fix this, during MLO, use the existing helper ieee80211_num_beaconing_links() to know if any of the link is beaconing.
