IPv4 and IPv6 share same implementation of get_cookie_sock(),

ss should display ipv4 mapped request sockets like this :
tcp SYN-RECV 0 0 ::ffff:192.168.0.1:8080 ::ffff:192.0.2.1:35261
and not like this :
tcp SYN-RECV 0 0 192.168.0.1:8080 192.0.2.1:35261
We should init ireq->ireq_family based on listener sk_family,
not the actual protocol carried by SYN packet.
This means we can set ireq_family in inet_reqsk_alloc()

One of the major issue for TCP is the SYNACK rtx handling,
done by inet_csk_reqsk_queue_prune(), fired by the keepalive
timer of a TCP_LISTEN socket.
This function runs for awful long times, with socket lock held,
meaning that other cpus needing this lock have to spin for hundred of ms.
SYNACK are sent in huge bursts, likely to cause severe drops anyway.
This model was OK 15 years ago when memory was very tight.
We now can afford to have a timer per request sock.
Timer invocations no longer need to lock the listener,
and can be run from all cpus in parallel.
With following patch increasing somaxconn width to 32 bits,
I tested a listener with more than 4 million active request sockets,
and a steady SYNFLOOD of ~200,000 SYN per second.
Host was sending ~830,000 SYNACK per second.
This is ~100 times more what we could achieve before this patch.
Later, we will get rid of the listener hash and use ehash instead.

While testing last patch series, I found req sock refcounting was wrong.
We must set skc_refcnt to 1 for all request socks added in hashes,
but also on request sockets created by FastOpen or syncookies.
It is tricky because we need to defer this initialization so that
future RCU lookups do not try to take a refcount on a not yet
fully initialized request socket.
Also get rid of ireq_refcnt alias.

This patch allows to set ECN on a per-route basis in case the sysctl
tcp_ecn is not set to 1. In other words, when ECN is set for specific
routes, it provides a tcp_ecn=1 behaviour for that route while the rest
of the stack acts according to the global settings.
One can use 'ip route change dev $dev $net features ecn' to toggle this.
Having a more fine-grained per-route setting can be beneficial for various
reasons, for example, 1) within data centers, or 2) local ISPs may deploy
ECN support for their own video/streaming services [1], etc.
There was a recent measurement study/paper [2] which scanned the Alexa's
publicly available top million websites list from a vantage point in US,
Europe and Asia:
Half of the Alexa list will now happily use ECN (tcp_ecn=2, most likely
blamed to commit 255cac91c3 ("tcp: extend ECN sysctl to allow server-side
only ECN") ;)); the break in connectivity on-path was found is about
1 in 10,000 cases. Timeouts rather than receiving back RSTs were much
more common in the negotiation phase (and mostly seen in the Alexa
middle band, ranks around 50k-150k): from 12-thousand hosts on which
there _may_ be ECN-linked connection failures, only 79 failed with RST
when _not_ failing with RST when ECN is not requested.
It's unclear though, how much equipment in the wild actually marks CE
when buffers start to fill up.
We thought about a fallback to non-ECN for retransmitted SYNs as another
global option (which could perhaps one day be made default), but as Eric
points out, there's much more work needed to detect broken middleboxes.
Two examples Eric mentioned are buggy firewalls that accept only a single
SYN per flow, and middleboxes that successfully let an ECN flow establish,
but later mark CE for all packets (so cwnd converges to 1).

The function cookie_check_timestamp(), both called from IPv4/6 context,
is being used to decode the echoed timestamp from the SYN/ACK into TCP
options used for follow-up communication with the peer.
We can remove ECN handling from that function, split it into a separate
one, and simply rename the original function into cookie_decode_options().
cookie_decode_options() just fills in tcp_option struct based on the
echoed timestamp received from the peer. Anything that fails in this
function will actually discard the request socket.
While this is the natural place for decoding options such as ECN which
commit 172d69e63c7f ("syncookies: add support for ECN") added, we argue
that in particular for ECN handling, it can be checked at a later point
in time as the request sock would actually not need to be dropped from
this, but just ECN support turned off.
Therefore, we split this functionality into cookie_ecn_ok(), which tells
us if the timestamp indicates ECN support AND the tcp_ecn sysctl is enabled.
This prepares for per-route ECN support: just looking at the tcp_ecn sysctl
won't be enough anymore at that point; if the timestamp indicates ECN
and sysctl tcp_ecn == 0, we will also need to check the ECN dst metric.
This would mean adding a route lookup to cookie_check_timestamp(), which
we definitely want to avoid. As we already do a route lookup at a later
point in cookie_{v4,v6}_check(), we can simply make use of that as well
for the new cookie_ecn_ok() function w/o any additional cost.

Commit 971f10eca186 ("tcp: better TCP_SKB_CB layout to reduce cache line
misses") added a regression for SO_BINDTODEVICE on IPv6.
This is because we still use inet6_iif() which expects that IP6 control
block is still at the beginning of skb->cb[]
This patch adds tcp_v6_iif() helper and uses it where necessary.
Because __inet6_lookup_skb() is used by TCP and DCCP, we add an iif
parameter to it.

Pull percpu consistent-ops changes from Tejun Heo:
"Way back, before the current percpu allocator was implemented, static
and dynamic percpu memory areas were allocated and handled separately
and had their own accessors. The distinction has been gone for many
years now; however, the now duplicate two sets of accessors remained
with the pointer based ones - this_cpu_*() - evolving various other
operations over time. During the process, we also accumulated other
inconsistent operations.
This pull request contains Christoph's patches to clean up the
duplicate accessor situation. __get_cpu_var() uses are replaced with
with this_cpu_ptr() and __this_cpu_ptr() with raw_cpu_ptr().
Unfortunately, the former sometimes is tricky thanks to C being a bit
messy with the distinction between lvalues and pointers, which led to
a rather ugly solution for cpumask_var_t involving the introduction of
this_cpu_cpumask_var_ptr().
This converts most of the uses but not all. Christoph will follow up
with the remaining conversions in this merge window and hopefully
remove the obsolete accessors"

When using mark-based routing, sockets returned from accept()
may need to be marked differently depending on the incoming
connection request.
This is the case, for example, if different socket marks identify
different networks: a listening socket may want to accept
connections from all networks, but each connection should be
marked with the network that the request came in on, so that
subsequent packets are sent on the correct network.
This patch adds a sysctl to mark TCP sockets based on the fwmark
of the incoming SYN packet. If enabled, and an unmarked socket
receives a SYN, then the SYN packet's fwmark is written to the
connection's inet_request_sock, and later written back to the
accepted socket when the connection is established. If the
socket already has a nonzero mark, then the behaviour is the same
as it is today, i.e., the listening socket's fwmark is used.
Black-box tested using user-mode linux:
- IPv4/IPv6 SYN+ACK, FIN, etc. packets are routed based on the
mark of the incoming SYN packet.
- The socket returned by accept() is marked with the mark of the
incoming SYN packet.
- Tested with syncookies=1 and syncookies=2.

In commit 634fb979e8f ("inet: includes a sock_common in request_sock")
I forgot that the two ports in sock_common do not have same byte order :
skc_dport is __be16 (network order), but skc_num is __u16 (host order)
So sparse complains because ir_loc_port (mapped into skc_num) is
considered as __u16 while it should be __be16

TCP listener refactoring, part 5 :
We want to be able to insert request sockets (SYN_RECV) into main
ehash table instead of the per listener hash table to allow RCU
lookups and remove listener lock contention.
This patch includes the needed struct sock_common in front
of struct request_sock
This means there is no more inet6_request_sock IPv6 specific
structure.
Following inet_request_sock fields were renamed as they became
macros to reference fields from struct sock_common.
Prefix ir_ was chosen to avoid name collisions.

We currently accept cookies that were created less than 4 minutes ago
(ie, cookies with counter delta 0-3). Combined with the 8 mss table
values, this yields 32 possible values (out of 2**32) that will be valid.
Reducing the lifetime to < 2 minutes halves the guessing chance while
still providing a large enough period.
While at it, get rid of jiffies value -- they overflow too quickly on

For passive TCP connections using TCP_DEFER_ACCEPT facility,
we incorrectly increment req->retrans each time timeout triggers
while no SYNACK is sent.
SYNACK are not sent for TCP_DEFER_ACCEPT that were established (for
which we received the ACK from client). Only the last SYNACK is sent
so that we can receive again an ACK from client, to move the req into
accept queue. We plan to change this later to avoid the useless
retransmit (and potential problem as this SYNACK could be lost)
TCP_INFO later gives wrong information to user, claiming imaginary
retransmits.
Decouple req->retrans field into two independent fields :
num_retrans : number of retransmit
num_timeout : number of timeouts
num_timeout is the counter that is incremented at each timeout,
regardless of actual SYNACK being sent or not, and used to
compute the exponential timeout.
Introduce inet_rtx_syn_ack() helper to increment num_retrans
only if ->rtx_syn_ack() succeeded.
Use inet_rtx_syn_ack() from tcp_check_req() to increment num_retrans
when we re-send a SYNACK in answer to a (retransmitted) SYN.
Prior to this patch, we were not counting these retransmits.
Change tcp_v[46]_rtx_synack() to increment TCP_MIB_RETRANSSEGS

This patch builds on top of the previous patch to add the support
for TFO listeners. This includes -
1. allocating, properly initializing, and managing the per listener
fastopen_queue structure when TFO is enabled
2. changes to the inet_csk_accept code to support TFO. E.g., the
request_sock can no longer be freed upon accept(), not until 3WHS
finishes
3. allowing a TCP_SYN_RECV socket to properly poll() and sendmsg()
if it's a TFO socket
4. properly closing a TFO listener, and a TFO socket before 3WHS
finishes
5. supporting TCP_FASTOPEN socket option
6. modifying tcp_check_req() to use to check a TFO socket as well
as request_sock
7. supporting TCP's TFO cookie option
8. adding a new SYN-ACK retransmit handler to use the timer directly
off the TFO socket rather than the listener socket. Note that TFO
server side will not retransmit anything other than SYN-ACK until
the 3WHS is completed.
The patch also contains an important function
"reqsk_fastopen_remove()" to manage the somewhat complex relation
between a listener, its request_sock, and the corresponding child
socket. See the comment above the function for the detail.

This patch impelements the common code for both the client and server.
1. TCP Fast Open option processing. Since Fast Open does not have an
option number assigned by IANA yet, it shares the experiment option
code 254 by implementing draft-ietf-tcpm-experimental-options
with a 16 bits magic number 0xF989. This enables global experiments
without clashing the scarce(2) experimental options available for TCP.
When the draft status becomes standard (maybe), the client should
switch to the new option number assigned while the server supports
both numbers for transistion.

This patch lowers the default initRTO from 3secs to 1sec per
RFC2988bis. It falls back to 3secs if the SYN or SYN-ACK packet
has been retransmitted, AND the TCP timestamp option is not on.
It also adds support to take RTT sample during 3WHS on the passive
open side, just like its active open counterpart, and uses it, if
valid, to seed the initRTO for the data transmission phase.
The patch also resets ssthresh to its initial default at the
beginning of the data transmission phase, and reduces cwnd to 1 if
there has been MORE THAN ONE retransmission during 3WHS per RFC5681.

Create two sets of port member accessors, one set prefixed by fl4_*
and the other prefixed by fl6_*
This will let us to create AF optimal flow instances.
It will work because every context in which we access the ports,
we have to be fully aware of which AF the flowi is anyways.

I intend to turn struct flowi into a union of AF specific flowi
structs. There will be a common structure that each variant includes
first, much like struct sock_common.
This is the first step to move in that direction.

Route lookups follow a general pattern in the ipv6 code wherein
we first find the non-IPSEC route, potentially override the
flow destination address due to ipv6 options settings, and then
finally make an IPSEC search using either xfrm_lookup() or
__xfrm_lookup().
__xfrm_lookup() is used when we want to generate a blackhole route
if the key manager needs to resolve the IPSEC rules (in this case
-EREMOTE is returned and the original 'dst' is left unchanged).
Otherwise plain xfrm_lookup() is used and when asynchronous IPSEC
resolution is necessary, we simply fail the lookup completely.
All of these cases are encapsulated into two routines,
ip6_dst_lookup_flow and ip6_sk_dst_lookup_flow. The latter of which
handles unconnected UDP datagram sockets.

Allows use of ECN when syncookies are in effect by encoding ecn_ok
into the syn-ack tcp timestamp.
While at it, remove a uneeded #ifdef CONFIG_SYN_COOKIES.
With CONFIG_SYN_COOKIES=nm want_cookie is ifdef'd to 0 and gcc
removes the "if (0)".

As pointed out by Fernando Gont there is no need to encode rcv_wscale
into the cookie.
We did not use the restored rcv_wscale anyway; it is recomputed
via tcp_select_initial_window().
Thus we can save 4 bits in the ts option space by removing rcv_wscale.
In case window scaling was not supported, we set the (invalid) wscale
value 0xf.

Discard the ACK if we find options that do not match current sysctl
settings.
Previously it was possible to create a connection with sack, wscale,
etc. enabled even if the feature was disabled via sysctl.
Also remove an unneeded call to tcp_sack_reset() in
cookie_check_timestamp: Both call sites (cookie_v4_check,
cookie_v6_check) zero "struct tcp_options_received", hand it to
tcp_parse_options() (which does not change tcp_opt->num_sacks/dsack)
and then call cookie_check_timestamp().
Even if num_sacks/dsacks were changed, the structure is allocated on
the stack and after cookie_check_timestamp returns only a few selected
members are copied to the inet_request_sock.

There are more than a dozen occurrences of following code in the
IPv6 stack:
if (opt && opt->srcrt) {
struct rt0_hdr *rt0 = (struct rt0_hdr *) opt->srcrt;
ipv6_addr_copy(&final, &fl.fl6_dst);
ipv6_addr_copy(&fl.fl6_dst, rt0->addr);
final_p = &final;
}
Replace those with a helper. Note that the helper overrides final_p
in all cases. This is ok as final_p was previously initialized to
NULL when declared.

Add rtnetlink init_rcvwnd to set the TCP initial receive window size
advertised by passive and active TCP connections.
The current Linux TCP implementation limits the advertised TCP initial
receive window to the one prescribed by slow start. For short lived
TCP connections used for transaction type of traffic (i.e. http
requests), bounding the advertised TCP initial receive window results
in increased latency to complete the transaction.
Support for setting initial congestion window is already supported
using rtnetlink init_cwnd, but the feature is useless without the
ability to set a larger TCP initial receive window.
The rtnetlink init_rcvwnd allows increasing the TCP initial receive
window, allowing TCP connection to advertise larger TCP receive window
than the ones bounded by slow start.
