5 daysethtool: Avoid overflowing userspace buffer on stats queryGal Pressman1-6/+24
[ Upstream commit 7b07be1ff1cb6c49869910518650e8d0abc7d25f ] The ethtool -S command operates across three ioctl calls: ETHTOOL_GSSET_INFO for the size, ETHTOOL_GSTRINGS for the names, and ETHTOOL_GSTATS for the values. If the number of stats changes between these calls (e.g., due to device reconfiguration), userspace's buffer allocation will be incorrect, potentially leading to buffer overflow. Drivers are generally expected to maintain stable stat counts, but some drivers (e.g., mlx5, bnx2x, bna, ksz884x) use dynamic counters, making this scenario possible. Some drivers try to handle this internally: - bnad_get_ethtool_stats() returns early in case stats.n_stats is not equal to the driver's stats count. - micrel/ksz884x also makes sure not to write anything beyond stats.n_stats and overflow the buffer. However, both use stats.n_stats which is already assigned with the value returned from get_sset_count(), hence won't solve the issue described here. Change ethtool_get_strings(), ethtool_get_stats(), ethtool_get_phy_stats() to not return anything in case of a mismatch between userspace's size and get_sset_size(), to prevent buffer overflow. The returned n_stats value will be equal to zero, to reflect that nothing has been returned. This could result in one of two cases when using upstream ethtool, depending on when the size change is detected: 1. When detected in ethtool_get_strings(): # ethtool -S eth2 no stats available 2. When detected in get stats, all stats will be reported as zero. Both cases are presumably transient, and a subsequent ethtool call should succeed. Other than the overflow avoidance, these two cases are very evident (no output/cleared stats), which is arguably better than presenting incorrect/shifted stats. I also considered returning an error instead of a "silent" response, but that seems more destructive towards userspace apps. Notes: - This patch does not claim to fix the inherent race, it only makes sure that we do not overflow the userspace buffer, and makes for a more predictable behavior. - RTNL lock is held during each ioctl, the race window exists between the separate ioctl calls when the lock is released. - Userspace ethtool always fills stats.n_stats, but it is likely that these stats ioctls are implemented in other userspace applications which might not fill it. The added code checks that it's not zero, to prevent any regressions. 5 daysnet/ethtool/ioctl: split ethtool_get_phy_stats into multiple helpersDaniil Tatianin1-33/+69
[ Upstream commit 201ed315f9676809cd5b20a39206e964106d4f27 ] So that it's easier to follow and make sense of the branching and various conditions. Stats retrieval has been split into two separate functions ethtool_get_phy_stats_phydev & ethtool_get_phy_stats_ethtool. The former attempts to retrieve the stats using phydev & phy_ops, while the latter uses ethtool_ops. Actual n_stats validation & array allocation has been moved into a new ethtool_vzalloc_stats_array helper. This also fixes a potential NULL dereference of ops->get_ethtool_phy_stats where it was getting called in an else branch unconditionally without making sure it was actually present. 2024-12-14ethtool: Fix wrong mod state in case of verbose and no_mask bitsetKory Maincent1-4/+44
[ Upstream commit 910c4788d6155b2202ec88273376cd7ecdc24f0a ] A bitset without mask in a _SET request means we want exactly the bits in the bitset to be set. This works correctly for compact format but when verbose format is parsed, ethnl_update_bitset32_verbose() only sets the bits present in the request bitset but does not clear the rest. The commit 6699170376ab ("ethtool: fix application of verbose no_mask bitset") fixes this issue by clearing the whole target bitmap before we start iterating. The solution proposed brought an issue with the behavior of the mod variable. As the bitset is always cleared the old value will always differ to the new value. Fix it by adding a new function to compare bitmaps and a temporary variable which save the state of the old bitmap. 2023-05-17ethtool: Fix uninitialized number of lanesIdo Schimmel1-1/+1
[ Upstream commit 9ad685dbfe7e856bbf17a7177b64676d324d6ed7 ] It is not possible to set the number of lanes when setting link modes using the legacy IOCTL ethtool interface. Since 'struct ethtool_link_ksettings' is not initialized in this path, drivers receive an uninitialized number of lanes in 'struct ethtool_link_ksettings::lanes'. When this information is later queried from drivers, it results in the ethtool code making decisions based on uninitialized memory, leading to the following KMSAN splat [1]. In practice, this most likely only happens with the tun driver that simply returns whatever it got in the set operation. As far as I can tell, this uninitialized memory is not leaked to user space thanks to the 'ethtool_ops->cap_link_lanes_supported' check in linkmodes_prepare_data(). Fix by initializing the structure in the IOCTL path. Did not find any more call sites that pass an uninitialized structure when calling 'ethtool_ops::set_link_ksettings()'. 2023-04-13ethtool: reset #lanes when lanes is omittedAndy Roulin1-3/+4
[ Upstream commit e847c7675e19ef344913724dc68f83df31ad6a17 ] If the number of lanes was forced and then subsequently the user omits this parameter, the ksettings->lanes is reset. The driver should then reset the number of lanes to the device's default for the specified speed. However, although the ksettings->lanes is set to 0, the mod variable is not set to true to indicate the driver and userspace should be notified of the changes. The consequence is that the same ethtool operation will produce different results based on the initial state. If the initial state is: $ ethtool swp1 | grep -A 3 'Speed: ' Speed: 500000Mb/s Lanes: 2 Duplex: Full Auto-negotiation: on then executing 'ethtool -s swp1 speed 50000 autoneg off' will yield: $ ethtool swp1 | grep -A 3 'Speed: ' Speed: 500000Mb/s Lanes: 2 Duplex: Full Auto-negotiation: off While if the initial state is: $ ethtool swp1 | grep -A 3 'Speed: ' Speed: 500000Mb/s Lanes: 1 Duplex: Full Auto-negotiation: off executing the same 'ethtool -s swp1 speed 50000 autoneg off' results in: $ ethtool swp1 | grep -A 3 'Speed: ' Speed: 500000Mb/s Lanes: 1 Duplex: Full Auto-negotiation: off This patch fixes this behavior. Omitting lanes will always results in the driver choosing the default lane width for the chosen speed. 2021-12-14ethtool: do not perform operations on net devices being unregisteredAntoine Tenart1-1/+2
commit dde91ccfa25fd58f64c397d91b81a4b393100ffa upstream. There is a short period between a net device starts to be unregistered and when it is actually gone. In that time frame ethtool operations could still be performed, which might end up in unwanted or undefined behaviours[1]. Do not allow ethtool operations after a net device starts its unregistration. This patch targets the netlink part as the ioctl one isn't affected: the reference to the net device is taken and the operation is executed within an rtnl lock section and the net device won't be found after unregister. [1] For example adding Tx queues after unregister ends up in NULL pointer exceptions and UaFs, such as: BUG: KASAN: use-after-free in kobject_get+0x14/0x90 Read of size 1 at addr ffff88801961248c by task ethtool/755 CPU: 0 PID: 755 Comm: ethtool Not tainted 5.15.0-rc6+ #778 Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS 1.14.0-4.fc34 04/014 Call Trace: dump_stack_lvl+0x57/0x72 print_address_description.constprop.0+0x1f/0x140 kasan_report.cold+0x7f/0x11b kobject_get+0x14/0x90 kobject_add_internal+0x3d1/0x450 kobject_init_and_add+0xba/0xf0 netdev_queue_update_kobjects+0xcf/0x200 netif_set_real_num_tx_queues+0xb4/0x310 veth_set_channels+0x1c3/0x550 ethnl_set_channels+0x524/0x610 Fixes: 041b1c5d4a53 ("ethtool: helper functions for netlink interface") Suggested-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Antoine Tenart <atenart@kernel.org> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20211203101318.435618-1-atenart@kernel.org Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>
2021-12-01ethtool: ioctl: fix potential NULL deref in ethtool_set_coalesce()Julian Wiedmann1-1/+1
[ Upstream commit 0276af2176c78771da7f311621a25d7608045827 ] ethtool_set_coalesce() now uses both the .get_coalesce() and .set_coalesce() callbacks. But the check for their availability is buggy, so changing the coalesce settings on a device where the driver provides only _one_ of the callbacks results in a NULL pointer dereference instead of an -EOPNOTSUPP. Fix the condition so that the availability of both callbacks is ensured. This also matches the netlink code. Note that reproducing this requires some effort - it only affects the legacy ioctl path, and needs a specific combination of driver options: - have .get_coalesce() and .coalesce_supported but no .set_coalesce(), or - have .set_coalesce() but no .get_coalesce(). Here eg. ethtool doesn't cause the crash as it first attempts to call ethtool_get_coalesce() and bails out on error. 2021-07-27dev_ioctl: pass SIOCDEVPRIVATE data separatelyArnd Bergmann1-2/+1
The compat handlers for SIOCDEVPRIVATE are incorrect for any driver that passes data as part of struct ifreq rather than as an ifr_data pointer, or that passes data back this way, since the compat_ifr_data_ioctl() helper overwrites the ifr_data pointer and does not copy anything back out. Since all drivers using devprivate commands are now converted to the new .ndo_siocdevprivate callback, fix this by adding the missing piece and passing the pointer separately the whole way. This further unifies the native and compat logic for socket ioctls, as the new code now passes the correct pointer as well as the correct data for both native and compat ioctls. 2021-07-23ethtool: improve compat ioctl handlingArnd Bergmann1-16/+120
The ethtool compat ioctl handling is hidden away in net/socket.c, which introduces a couple of minor oddities: - The implementation may end up diverging, as seen in the RXNFC extension in commit 84a1d9c48200 ("net: ethtool: extend RXNFC API to support RSS spreading of filter matches") that does not work in compat mode. - Most architectures do not need the compat handling at all because u64 and compat_u64 have the same alignment. - On x86, the conversion is done for both x32 and i386 user space, but it's actually wrong to do it for x32 and cannot work there. - On 32-bit Arm, it never worked for compat oabi user space, since that needs to do the same conversion but does not. - It would be nice to get rid of both compat_alloc_user_space() and copy_in_user() throughout the kernel. None of these actually seems to be a serious problem that real users are likely to encounter, but fixing all of them actually leads to code that is both shorter and more readable. 2021-05-05ethtool: fix missing NLM_F_MULTI flag when dumpingFernando Fernandez Mancera1-1/+2
When dumping the ethtool information from all the interfaces, the netlink reply should contain the NLM_F_MULTI flag. This flag allows userspace tools to identify that multiple messages are expected. 2021-04-20ethtool: ioctl: Fix out-of-bounds warning in store_link_ksettings_for_user()Gustavo A. R. Silva1-1/+1
Fix the following out-of-bounds warning: net/ethtool/ioctl.c:492:2: warning: 'memcpy' offset [49, 84] from the object at 'link_usettings' is out of the bounds of referenced subobject 'base' with type 'struct ethtool_link_settings' at offset 0 [-Warray-bounds] The problem is that the original code is trying to copy data into a some struct members adjacent to each other in a single call to memcpy(). This causes a legitimate compiler warning because memcpy() overruns the length of &link_usettings.base. Fix this by directly using &link_usettings and _from_ as destination and source addresses, instead. This helps with the ongoing efforts to globally enable -Warray-bounds and get us closer to being able to tighten the FORTIFY_SOURCE routines on memcpy(). 2021-04-17ethtool: add interface to read RMON statsJakub Kicinski3-0/+93
Most devices maintain RMON (RFC 2819) stats - particularly the "histogram" of packets received by size. Unlike other RFCs which duplicate IEEE stats, the short/oversized frame counters in RMON don't seem to match IEEE stats 1-to-1 either, so expose those, too. Do not expose basic packet, CRC errors etc - those are already otherwise covered. Because standard defines packet ranges only up to 1518, and everything above that should theoretically be "oversized" - devices often create their own ranges. Going beyond what the RFC defines - expose the "histogram" in the Tx direction (assume for now that the ranges will be the same). 2021-04-17ethtool: add interface to read standard MAC statsJakub Kicinski3-0/+96
Most of the MAC statistics are included in struct rtnl_link_stats64, but some fields are aggregated. Besides it's good to expose these clearly hardware stats separately. Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
