6 dayskcov: fix data corruption and race conditions on PREEMPT_RTTetsuo Handa1-2/+3
commit 2eed77fdcb0cc48e8eccb2bcd4b7f2c6d650e84c upstream. syzbot is reporting KCOV state corruption on PREEMPT_RT kernels, for the temporary storage used for saving/restoring remote KCOV state is currently allocated as the per-CPU area. On PREEMPT_RT kernels, softirq handlers run as preemptible task threads (e.g., ksoftirqd). If a softirq context preempts a task running a remote KCOV session, it safely saves the task's state into the per-CPU area. However, if that softirq thread is subsequently preempted by a higher- priority softirq thread on the same CPU, the second softirq will overwrite the same per-CPU area, permanently destroying the original task's KCOV state. Fix this data corruption by moving the temporary storage from the per-CPU area to the per-thread area. Since each softirq thread now owns its own task context, nested softirq preemption no longer causes data overwrites. Note that while the temporary storage is now on a per-thread basis, the per-CPU kcov_percpu_data.lock must be retained, for we need to ensure that kcov_remote_start() and kcov_remote_stop() operate atomically without racing against asynchronous interrupts that manipulate the current task's KCOV state. It is likely that GFP_KERNEL allocation by vmalloc_node() in kcov_init() has already called panic() before returning NULL, for there will be no OOM-killable userspace processes when __init function of built-in module runs. But this patch also fixes crashing the kernel when vmalloc_node() in kcov_init() returned NULL, for kcov_init() left per-CPU irq_area == NULL but kcov_remote_start() depends on per-CPU irq_area != NULL, resulting in (1) doing vmalloc() in kcov_remote_start() despite !in_task() context (2) out-of-array-bounds access if (1) succeeded but kcov->remote_size < CONFIG_KCOV_IRQ_AREA_SIZE (3) always leak memory allocated by (1), eventually killing all OOM-killable userspace processes problems. 10 daysbootconfig: fix NULL-pointer arithmetic in xbc_snprint_cmdline()Breno Leitao1-7/+16
[ Upstream commit dec4d8118c179b3d12bca7e609054c6011c4f2ce ] xbc_snprint_cmdline() is meant to be called twice: first with buf=NULL, size=0 to probe the rendered length, then with a real buffer to fill it (the standard snprintf() two-pass pattern). The probe call makes the function compute "buf + size" (NULL + 0) and, on every iteration, advance "buf += ret" from that NULL base and pass the result back into snprintf(). Pointer arithmetic on a NULL pointer is undefined behavior. It is harmless in the in-kernel callers today, but the follow-up patches run this same code in the userspace tools/bootconfig parser at kernel build time, where host UBSan / FORTIFY_SOURCE abort the build. Track a running written length (size_t) instead of mutating @buf, and only form "buf + len" when @buf is non-NULL. snprintf(NULL, 0, ...) is itself well defined and returns the would-be length, so the two-pass "probe then fill" usage returns identical byte counts. Problem 1: cc-disable-warning invokes compiler dozens of times To see how many times the cc-disable-warning is evaluated, change this code: $(call cc-disable-warning,fortify-source) to: $(call cc-disable-warning,$(shell touch /tmp/fortify-$$$$)fortify-source) Then, build the kernel with CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE=y. You will see a large number of '/tmp/fortify-<PID>' files created: $ ls -1 /tmp/fortify-* | wc 80 80 1600 This means the compiler was invoked 80 times just for checking the -Wno-fortify-source flag support. $(call cc-disable-warning,fortify-source) should be added to a simple variable instead of a recursive variable. Problem 2: do not recompile string.o when the test code is updated The test cases are independent of the kernel. However, when the test code is updated, $(obj)/string.o is rebuilt and vmlinux is relinked due to this dependency: $(obj)/string.o: $(obj)/$(TEST_FORTIFY_LOG) always-y is suitable for building the log files. Problem 3: redundant code clean-files += $(addsuffix .o, $(TEST_FORTIFY_LOGS)) ... is unneeded because the top Makefile globally cleans *.o files. This commit fixes these issues and makes the code readable. [ Upstream commit 8173f7e2ce67e6ca1d4763f3da14e5b01ce77456 ] rhashtable_walk_start_check() has two restart paths when resuming a walk. When iter->walker.tbl is valid, it re-validates iter->p against the table and sets iter->p = NULL if the object is gone. When iter->walker.tbl is NULL (table was freed during resize), it resets slot and skip but forgets to clear iter->p. rhashtable_walk_next() then dereferences the stale iter->p, reading freed memory. This is a use-after-free. Any caller that does multi-fragment rhashtable walks across walk_stop/walk_start boundaries is affected. [ Upstream commit a82c8a05e86f3f84e09698f65b4515b5d04633f6 ] assoc_array_walk() masks off the bits past shortcut->skip_to_level in the word that contains skip_to_level, gated on round_up(sc_level, ASSOC_ARRAY_KEY_CHUNK_SIZE) > skip_to_level. That guard is wrong in two opposite ways: - When sc_level is word-aligned (every word after the first) round_up() is a no-op, so the guard is sc_level > skip_to_level and never fires for the word that holds skip_to_level. A shortcut that spans more than one word and ends in the middle of its last word leaves that word untrimmed, and its stale high bits leak into the dissimilarity word and can steer the walk down the wrong descendant. - When sc_level is unaligned (the first word) and skip_to_level sits on the next chunk boundary, sc_level + CHUNK would exceed skip_to_level and fire the trim with shift = skip_to_level & CHUNK_MASK == 0, which clears the whole dissimilarity word and makes a differing shortcut compare equal. Use the end of the chunk that contains sc_level instead: skip_to_level < round_down(sc_level, CHUNK) + CHUNK For an aligned sc_level whose word holds skip_to_level this now fires (the first bug); for an unaligned sc_level with skip_to_level on the following boundary it does not, so shift is never 0 when the branch runs and the trim never clears the whole word. 2026-07-24tracing: Prevent out-of-bounds read in glob matchingHuihui Huang1-2/+29

String event fields are not necessarily NUL-terminated, so the filter predicate functions (filter_pred_string(), filter_pred_strloc() and filter_pred_strrelloc()) pass the field length to the regex match callbacks, and the length-aware matchers honour it. regex_match_glob() was the exception: it ignored the length and called glob_match(), which scans the string until it hits a NUL byte. Some string fields are not NUL-terminated. One example is the dynamic char array of the xfs_* namespace tracepoints, which is copied without a trailing NUL. For such a field, glob matching reads past the end of the event field, causing a KASAN slab-out-of-bounds read in glob_match(), reached via regex_match_glob() and filter_match_preds() from the xfs_lookup tracepoint. Add a length-bounded glob_match_len() and use it from regex_match_glob() so glob matching always stops at the field boundary. The matching loop is factored into a shared helper so glob_match() keeps its behaviour. commit b81dde13cc163450dcb402dcc915ef13ba241e01 upstream. syzbot reported a puzzling splat: WARNING: kernel/time/hrtimer.c:443 at stub_timer+0xa/0x20 stub_timer() is installed as timer callback function in hrtimer_fixup_assert_init(), which is invoked when debug_object_assert_init() can't find a shadow object. In that case debug objects emits a warning about it before invoking the fixup. Though the provided console log lacks this warning and instead has the following a few seconds before the splat: ODEBUG: Out of memory. The debug object splat is skipped because debug_objects_enabled is false, but the fixup callback is invoked unconditionally, which makes the timer disfunctional. This is only a problem in debug_object_assert_init() and debug_object_activate() as both have to handle statically initialized objects and therefore must handle the error pointer return case gracefully. All other places only handle the found/not found case and the NULL pointer return is a signal for OOM. Otherwise they get a valid shadow object. Plug the hole by checking whether debug objects are still enabled before invoking the print and fixup function in those two places. When booting a debug PREEMPT_RT kernel on an ARM64 system, a "inconsistent {HARDIRQ-ON-W} -> {IN-HARDIRQ-W} usage" lockdep warning message was reported to the console. During early boot, interrupts are enabled before the scheduler is enabled. In this window (before SYSTEM_SCHEDULING is set) interrupts can fire and in the hard interrupt context handler attempt to fill the pool This can lead to a deadlock when the interrupt occurred when the interrupt hits a region which holds a lock that is required to be taken in the allocation path. Add a new can_fill_pool() helper and reorder the exception rule and forbid this scenario by excluding allocations from hard interrupt context. The used annotation is wrong. LD_WAIT_SLEEP is for always sleeping lock types such as mutex_t. LD_WAIT_CONFIG is for lock type which are sleeping while spinning on PREEMPT_RT such as spinlock_t. On PREEMPT_RT refilling is limited to preemptible sections due to sleeping locks used by the memory allocator. The system boots with disabled interrupts so the pool can not be refilled. If too many objects are initialized and the pool gets empty then debugobjects disables itself. Refiling can also happen early in the boot with disabled interrupts as long as the scheduler is not operational. If the scheduler can not preempt a task then a sleeping lock can not be contended. Allow to additionally refill the pool if the scheduler is not operational. There is an explicit wait-type violation in debug_object_fill_pool() for PREEMPT_RT=n kernels which allows them to more easily fill the object pool and reduce the chance of allocation failures. Lockdep's wait-type checks are designed to check the PREEMPT_RT locking rules even for PREEMPT_RT=n kernels and object to this, so create a lockdep annotation to allow this to stand. Specifically, create a 'lock' type that overrides the inner wait-type while it is held -- allowing one to temporarily raise it, such that the violation is hidden. commit 8c2f1288250a90a4b5cabed5d888d7e3aeed4035 upstream. Yiming reports an integer underflow in mpi_read_raw_from_sgl() when subtracting "lzeros" from the unsigned "nbytes". For this to happen, the scatterlist "sgl" needs to occupy more bytes than the "nbytes" parameter and the first "nbytes + 1" bytes of the scatterlist must be zero. Under these conditions, the while loop iterating over the scatterlist will count more zeroes than "nbytes", subtract the number of zeroes from "nbytes" and cause the underflow. When commit 2d4d1eea540b ("lib/mpi: Add mpi sgl helpers") originally introduced the bug, it couldn't be triggered because all callers of mpi_read_raw_from_sgl() passed a scatterlist whose length was equal to "nbytes". However since commit 63ba4d67594a ("KEYS: asymmetric: Use new crypto interface without scatterlists"), the underflow can now actually be triggered. When invoking a KEYCTL_PKEY_ENCRYPT system call with a larger "out_len" than "in_len" and filling the "in" buffer with zeroes, crypto_akcipher_sync_prep() will create an all-zero scatterlist used for both the "src" and "dst" member of struct akcipher_request and thereby fulfil the conditions to trigger the bug: sys_keyctl() keyctl_pkey_e_d_s() asymmetric_key_eds_op() software_key_eds_op() crypto_akcipher_sync_encrypt() crypto_akcipher_sync_prep() crypto_akcipher_encrypt() rsa_enc() mpi_read_raw_from_sgl() To the user this will be visible as a DoS as the kernel spins forever, causing soft lockup splats as a side effect. These were mostly reported by Zenghui Yu with special thanks to Lorenzo for analysing and pointing out the problems. This patch (of 3): When dmirror_fops_release() is called it frees the dmirror struct but doesn't migrate device private pages back to system memory first. This leaves those pages with a dangling zone_device_data pointer to the freed dmirror. If a subsequent fault occurs on those pages (eg. during coredump) the dmirror_devmem_fault() callback dereferences the stale pointer causing a kernel panic. This was reported [1] when running mm/ksft_hmm.sh on arm64, where a test failure triggered SIGABRT and the resulting coredump walked the VMAs faulting in the stale device private pages. Fix this by calling dmirror_device_evict_chunk() for each devmem chunk in dmirror_fops_release() to migrate all device private pages back to system memory before freeing the dmirror struct. The function is moved earlier in the file to avoid a forward declaration. commit 4c9ad387aa2d6785299722e54224d34764edaeb3 upstream. gcc-16 has gained some more advanced inter-procedual optimization techniques that enable it to inline the dummy_tlb_add_page() and dummy_tlb_flush() function pointers into a specialized version of __arm_v7s_unmap: WARNING: modpost: vmlinux: section mismatch in reference: __arm_v7s_unmap+0x2cc (section: .text) -> dummy_tlb_add_page (section: .init.text) ERROR: modpost: Section mismatches detected. >From what I can tell, the transformation is correct, as this is only called when __arm_v7s_unmap() is called from arm_v7s_do_selftests(), which is also __init. Since __arm_v7s_unmap() however is not __init, gcc cannot inline the inner function calls directly. In debug_objects_selftest(), the same thing happens. Both the caller and the leaf function are __init, but the IPA pulls it into a non-init one: WARNING: modpost: vmlinux: section mismatch in reference: lookup_object_or_alloc+0x7c (section: .text.lookup_object_or_alloc) -> is_static_object (section: .init.text) Marking the affected functions as not "__init" would reliably avoid this issue but is not a good solution because it removes an otherwise correct annotation. I tried marking the functions as 'noinline', but that ended up not covering all the affected configurations. With some more experimenting, I found that marking these functions as __attribute__((noipa)) is both logical and reliable. In order to keep the syntax readable, add a custom macro for this in include/linux/compiler_attributes.h next to other related macros and use it to annotate both files. commit 8cdf30813ea8ce881cecc08664144416dbdb3e16 upstream. The ts_kmp algorithm stores its prefix_tbl[] table and pattern in a single allocation sized from the pattern length. If the prefix_tbl[] size calculation wraps, the resulting allocation can be too small and subsequent pattern copies can overflow it. Fix this by rejecting zero-length patterns and by using overflow helpers before calculating the combined allocation size. This fixes a potential heap overflow. The pattern length calculation can wrap during a size_t addition, leading to an undersized allocation. Because the textsearch library is reachable from userspace via Netfilter's xt_string module, this is a security risk that should be backported to LTS kernels. Since the ChaCha permutation is invertible, the local variable 'permuted_state' is sufficient to compute the original 'state', and thus the key, even after the permutation has been done. While the kernel is quite inconsistent about zeroizing secrets on the stack (and some prominent userspace crypto libraries don't bother at all since it's not guaranteed to work anyway), the kernel does try to do it as a best practice, especially in cases involving the RNG. Thus, explicitly zeroize 'permuted_state' before it goes out of scope. After this change all policy macros that can be used with UINT types, such as NLA_POLICY_MASK() can also be used with NLA_BE16/32. This will be used to validate nf_tables flag attributes which are in bigendian byte order. Output is truncated when the return value is >= the buffer size, not just > the buffer size. Use open_brace[brace_index - 1] to correctly identify the unclosed brace. brace_index is known to be > 0 here since we are inside the if (brace_index) guard. [ Upstream commit 1a251f52cfdc417c84411a056bc142cbd77baef4 ] This just standardizes the use of MIN() and MAX() macros, with the very traditional semantics. The goal is to use these for C constant expressions and for top-level / static initializers, and so be able to simplify the min()/max() macros. These macro names were used by various kernel code - they are very traditional, after all - and all such users have been fixed up, with a few different approaches: - trivial duplicated macro definitions have been removed Note that 'trivial' here means that it's obviously kernel code that already included all the major kernel headers, and thus gets the new generic MIN/MAX macros automatically. - non-trivial duplicated macro definitions are guarded with #ifndef This is the "yes, they define their own versions, but no, the include situation is not entirely obvious, and maybe they don't get the generic version automatically" case. - strange use case #1 A couple of drivers decided that the way they want to describe their versioning is with #define MAJ 1 #define MIN 2 #define DRV_VERSION __stringify(MAJ) "." __stringify(MIN) which adds zero value and I just did my Alexander the Great impersonation, and rewrote that pointless Gordian knot as #define DRV_VERSION "1.2" instead. - strange use case #2 A couple of drivers thought that it's a good idea to have a random 'MIN' or 'MAX' define for a value or index into a table, rather than the traditional macro that takes arguments. These values were re-written as C enum's instead. The new function-line macros only expand when followed by an open parenthesis, and thus don't clash with enum use. Happily, there weren't really all that many of these cases, and a lot of users already had the pattern of using '#ifndef' guarding (or in one case just using '#undef MIN') before defining their own private version that does the same thing. I left such cases alone. [ Upstream commit f9bff0e31881d03badf191d3b0005839391f5f2b ] Patch series "New page table range API", v6. This patchset changes the API used by the MM to set up page table entries. The four APIs are: set_ptes(mm, addr, ptep, pte, nr) update_mmu_cache_range(vma, addr, ptep, nr) flush_dcache_folio(folio) flush_icache_pages(vma, page, nr) flush_dcache_folio() isn't technically new, but no architecture implemented it, so I've done that for them. The old APIs remain around but are mostly implemented by calling the new interfaces. The new APIs are based around setting up N page table entries at once. The N entries belong to the same PMD, the same folio and the same VMA, so ptep++ is a legitimate operation, and locking is taken care of for you. Some architectures can do a better job of it than just a loop, but I have hesitated to make too deep a change to architectures I don't understand well. One thing I have changed in every architecture is that PG_arch_1 is now a per-folio bit instead of a per-page bit when used for dcache clean/dirty tracking. This was something that would have to happen eventually, and it makes sense to do it now rather than iterate over every page involved in a cache flush and figure out if it needs to happen. The point of all this is better performance, and Fengwei Yin has measured improvement on x86. I suspect you'll see improvement on your architecture too. This patchset is the basis for much of the anonymous large folio work being done by Ryan, so it's received quite a lot of testing over the last few months. This patch (of 38): Determine if a value lies within a range more efficiently (subtraction + comparison vs two comparisons and an AND). It also has useful (under some circumstances) behaviour if the range exceeds the maximum value of the type. Convert all the conflicting definitions of in_range() within the kernel; some can use the generic definition while others need their own definition. 2025-07-17maple_tree: fix MA_STATE_PREALLOC flag in mas_preallocate()Liam R. Howlett1-2/+4

Pre-existing allocations are already counted against the request through mas_node_count_gfp(), but the allocations will not happen if the MA_STATE_PREALLOC flag is set. This flag is meant to avoid re-allocating in bulk allocation mode, and to detect issues with preallocation calculations. The MA_STATE_PREALLOC flag should also always be set on zero allocations so that detection of underflow allocations will print a WARN_ON() during consumption. This patch adds kunit test suite to check the longest symbol length. These tests verify that the longest symbol length defined is supported. This test can also help other efforts for longer symbol length, like [2]. The test suite defines one symbol with the longest possible length. The first test verify that functions with names of the created symbol, can be called or not. The second test, verify that the symbols are created (or not) in the kernel symbol table. [ Upstream commit 3a17f23f7c36bac3a3584aaf97d3e3e0b2790396 ] Executing dql_reset after setting a non-zero value for limit_min can lead to an unreasonable situation where dql->limit is less than dql->limit_min. For instance, after setting /sys/class/net/eth*/queues/tx-0/byte_queue_limits/limit_min, an ifconfig down/up operation might cause the ethernet driver to call netdev_tx_reset_queue, which in turn invokes dql_reset. In this case, dql->limit is reset to 0 while dql->limit_min remains non-zero value, which is unexpected. The limit should always be greater than or equal to limit_min. The call to read_word_at_a_time() in sized_strscpy() is problematic with MTE because it may trigger a tag check fault when reading across a tag granule (16 bytes) boundary. To make this code MTE compatible, let's start using load_unaligned_zeropad() on architectures where it is available (i.e. architectures that define CONFIG_DCACHE_WORD_ACCESS). Because load_unaligned_zeropad() takes care of page boundaries as well as tag granule boundaries, also disable the code preventing crossing page boundaries when using load_unaligned_zeropad(). 2025-04-25lib: scatterlist: fix sg_split_phys to preserve original scatterlist offsetsT Pratham1-2/+0
commit 8b46fdaea819a679da176b879e7b0674a1161a5e upstream. The split_sg_phys function was incorrectly setting the offsets of all scatterlist entries (except the first) to 0. Only the first scatterlist entry's offset and length needs to be modified to account for the skip. Setting the rest entries' offsets to 0 could lead to incorrect data access. I am using this function in a crypto driver that I'm currently developing (not yet sent to mailing list). During testing, it was observed that the output scatterlists (except the first one) contained incorrect garbage data. I narrowed this issue down to the call of sg_split(). Upon debugging inside this function, I found that this resetting of offset is the cause of the problem, causing the subsequent scatterlists to point to incorrect memory locations in a page. By removing this code, I am obtaining expected data in all the split output scatterlists. Thus, this was indeed causing observable runtime effects! This patch removes the offending code, ensuring that the page offsets in the input scatterlist are preserved in the output scatterlist.
