Instead of embedding a list_head in struct mutex, store a pointer to the first waiter. The list of waiters remains a doubly linked list so we can efficiently add to the tail of the list, remove from the front (or middle) of the list. Some of the list manipulation becomes more complicated, but it's a reasonable tradeoff on the slow paths to shrink data structures which embed a mutex like struct file. Some of the debug checks have to be deleted because there's no equivalent to checking them in the new scheme (eg an empty waiter->list now means that it is the only waiter, not that the waiter is no longer on the list). Implicitly asserting an active context during initialization caused false-positive double-lock errors when acquiring a lock immediately after its initialization. 2026-01-28compiler-context-analysis: Introduce scoped init guardsMarco Elver1-0/+3
Add scoped init guard definitions for common synchronization primitives supported by context analysis. The scoped init guards treat the context as active within initialization scope of the underlying context lock, given initialization implies exclusive access to the underlying object. This allows initialization of guarded members without disabling context analysis, while documenting initialization from subsequent usage. The documentation is updated with the new recommendation. Where scoped init guards are not provided or cannot be implemented (ww_mutex omitted for lack of multi-arg guard initializers), the alternative is to just disable context analysis where guarded members are initialized. 2025-12-01locking/mutex: Redo __mutex_init() to reduce generated code sizeSebastian Andrzej Siewior1-10/+35
mutex_init() invokes __mutex_init() providing the name of the lock and a pointer to a the lock class. With LOCKDEP enabled this information is useful but without LOCKDEP it not used at all. Passing the pointer information of the lock class might be considered negligible but the name of the lock is passed as well and the string is stored. This information is wasting storage. Split __mutex_init() into a _genereic() variant doing the initialisation of the lock and a _lockdep() version which does _genereic() plus the lockdep bits. Restrict the lockdep version to lockdep enabled builds allowing the compiler to remove the unused parameter. 2025-07-16cleanup: Introduce ACQUIRE() and ACQUIRE_ERR() for conditional locksPeter Zijlstra1-1/+1
scoped_cond_guard(), automatic cleanup for conditional locks, has a couple pain points: * It causes existing straight-line code to be re-indented into a new bracketed scope. While this can be mitigated by a new helper function to contain the scope, that is not always a comfortable conversion. * The return code from the conditional lock is tossed in favor of a scheme to pass a 'return err;' statement to the macro. Other attempts to clean this up, to behave more like guard() [1], got hung up trying to both establish and evaluate the conditional lock in one statement. ACQUIRE() solves this by reflecting the result of the condition in the automatic variable established by the lock CLASS(). The result is separately retrieved with the ACQUIRE_ERR() helper, effectively a PTR_ERR() operation. 2025-07-12locking/mutex: Mark devm_mutex_init() as __must_checkThomas Weißschuh1-4/+7
devm_mutex_init() can fail. With CONFIG_DEBUG_MUTEXES=y the mutex will be marked as unusable and trigger errors on usage. Enforce all callers check the return value through the compiler. As devm_mutex_init() itself is a macro, it can not be annotated directly. Annotate __devm_mutex_init() instead. Unfortunately __must_check/warn_unused_result don't propagate through statement expression. So move the statement expression into the argument list of the call to __devm_mutex_init() through a helper macro. 2025-05-27locking/mutex: implement mutex_lock_killable_nest_lockMaxim Levitsky1-4/+13
KVM's SEV intra-host migration code needs to lock all vCPUs of the source and the target VM, before it proceeds with the migration. The number of vCPUs that belong to each VM is not bounded by anything except a self-imposed KVM limit of CONFIG_KVM_MAX_NR_VCPUS vCPUs which is significantly larger than the depth of lockdep's lock stack. Luckily, the locks in both of the cases mentioned above, are held under the 'kvm->lock' of each VM, which means that we can use the little known lockdep feature called a "nest_lock" to support this use case in a cleaner way, compared to the way it's currently done. Implement and expose 'mutex_lock_killable_nest_lock' for this purpose. 2025-05-27locking/mutex: implement mutex_trylock_nestedMaxim Levitsky1-0/+15
Despite the fact that several lockdep-related checks are skipped when calling trylock* versions of the locking primitives, for example mutex_trylock, each time the mutex is acquired, a held_lock is still placed onto the lockdep stack by __lock_acquire() which is called regardless of whether the trylock* or regular locking API was used. This means that if the caller successfully acquires more than MAX_LOCK_DEPTH locks of the same class, even when using mutex_trylock, lockdep will still complain that the maximum depth of the held lock stack has been reached and disable itself. For example, the following error currently occurs in the ARM version of KVM, once the code tries to lock all vCPUs of a VM configured with more than MAX_LOCK_DEPTH vCPUs, a situation that can easily happen on modern systems, where having more than 48 CPUs is common, and it's also common to run VMs that have vCPU counts approaching that number: [ 328.171264] BUG: MAX_LOCK_DEPTH too low! Patch series "hung_task: Dump the blocking task stacktrace", v4. The hung_task detector is very useful for detecting the lockup. However, since it only dumps the blocked (uninterruptible sleep) processes, it is not enough to identify the root cause of that lockup. For example, if a process holds a mutex and sleep an event in interruptible state long time, the other processes will wait on the mutex in uninterruptible state. In this case, the waiter processes are dumped, but the blocker process is not shown because it is sleep in interruptible state. This adds a feature to dump the blocker task which holds a mutex when detecting a hung task. e.g. INFO: task cat:115 blocked for more than 122 seconds. We can follow the waiter link but the output will be a bit different compared with mutex case. This patch (of 2): The "hung_task" shows a long-time uninterruptible slept task, but most often, it's blocked on a mutex acquired by another task. Without dumping such a task, investigating the root cause of the hung task problem is very difficult. This introduce task_struct::blocker_mutex to point the mutex lock which this task is waiting for. Since the mutex has "owner" information, we can find the owner task and dump it with hung tasks. Note: the owner can be changed while dumping the owner task, so this is "likely" the owner of the mutex. With this change, the hung task shows blocker task's info like below; INFO: task cat:115 blocked for more than 122 seconds. With CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT disabled __mutex_init() is a function. With CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT enabled, __mutex_init() is a macro. I assume this is why mutex_init() is defined twice as exactly the same macro. Prepare for introducing a new macro for mutex initialization by combining the two identical mutex_init() definitions into a single definition. This patch does not change any functionality because the C preprocessor expands macros when it encounters the macro name and not when a macro definition is encountered. Using of devm API leads to a certain order of releasing resources. So all dependent resources which are not devm-wrapped should be deleted with respect to devm-release order. Mutex is one of such objects that often is bound to other resources and has no own devm wrapping. Since mutex_destroy() actually does nothing in non-debug builds frequently calling mutex_destroy() is just ignored which is safe for now but wrong formally and can lead to a problem if mutex_destroy() will be extended so introduce devm_mutex_init(). Extend lockdep to validate lock wait-type context. The current wait-types are: LD_WAIT_FREE, /* wait free, rcu etc.. */ LD_WAIT_SPIN, /* spin loops, raw_spinlock_t etc.. */ LD_WAIT_CONFIG, /* CONFIG_PREEMPT_LOCK, spinlock_t etc.. */ LD_WAIT_SLEEP, /* sleeping locks, mutex_t etc.. */ Where lockdep validates that the current lock (the one being acquired) fits in the current wait-context (as generated by the held stack). This ensures that there is no attempt to acquire mutexes while holding spinlocks, to acquire spinlocks while holding raw_spinlocks and so on. In other words, its a more fancy might_sleep(). Obviously RCU made the entire ordeal more complex than a simple single value test because RCU can be acquired in (pretty much) any context and while it presents a context to nested locks it is not the same as it got acquired in. Therefore its necessary to split the wait_type into two values, one representing the acquire (outer) and one representing the nested context (inner). For most 'normal' locks these two are the same. [ To make static initialization easier we have the rule that: .outer == INV means .outer == .inner; because INV == 0. ] It further means that its required to find the minimal .inner of the held stack to compare against the outer of the new lock; because while 'normal' RCU presents a CONFIG type to nested locks, if it is taken while already holding a SPIN type it obviously doesn't relax the rules. This tells that the acquiring lock requires a more relaxed environment than presented by the lock stack. Currently only the normal locks and RCU are converted, the rest of the lockdep users defaults to .inner = INV which is ignored. More conversions can be done when desired. The check for spinlock_t nesting is not enabled by default. It's a separate config option for now as there are known problems which are currently addressed. The config option allows to identify these problems and to verify that the solutions found are indeed solving them. The config switch will be removed and the checks will permanently enabled once the vast majority of issues has been addressed. <linux/mutex.h> does not use nor need <linux/linkage.h>, so drop that one header file from mutex.h. <linux/mutex.h> is currently #included in around 1250 C source files (oops, I didn't count other header files that #include it), making it the 27th most-used header file. Build tested on i386 and x86_64 * (allnoconfig, tiny.config, defconfig, allyesconfig, and allmodconfig) and x64_64 allmodconfig + SMP=disabled. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman1-0/+1
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2017-01-14locking/ww_mutex: Add waiters in stamp orderNicolai Hähnle1-0/+3
Add regular waiters in stamp order. Keep adding waiters that have no context in FIFO order and take care not to starve them. While adding our task as a waiter, back off if we detect that there is a waiter with a lower stamp in front of us. Make sure to call lock_contended even when we back off early. For w/w mutexes, being first in the wait list is only stable when taking the lock without a context. Therefore, the purpose of the first flag is split into two: 'first' remains to indicate whether we want to spin optimistically, while 'handoff' indicates that we should be prepared to accept a handoff. For w/w locking with a context, we always accept handoffs after the first schedule(), to handle the following sequence of events: 1. Task #0 unlocks and hands off to Task #2 which is first in line 2. Task #1 adds itself in front of Task #2 3. 2017-01-14locking/mutex: Fix mutex handoffPeter Zijlstra1-1/+1
While reviewing the ww_mutex patches, I noticed that it was still possible to (incorrectly) succeed for (incorrect) code like: mutex_lock(&a); mutex_lock(&a); This was possible if the second mutex_lock() would block (as expected) but then receive a spurious wakeup. At that point it would find itself at the front of the queue, request a handoff and instantly claim ownership and continue, since owner would point to itself. Avoid this scenario and simplify the code by introducing a third low bit to signal handoff pickup. So once we request handoff, unlock clears the handoff bit and sets the pickup bit along with the new owner. This also removes the need for the .handoff argument to __mutex_trylock(), since that becomes superfluous with PICKUP. In order to guarantee enough low bits, ensure task_struct alignment is at least L1_CACHE_BYTES (which seems a good ideal regardless).
