2025-10-15minmax.h: remove some #defines that are only expanded onceDavid Laight1-8/+6
[ Upstream commit 2b97aaf74ed534fb838d09867d09a3ca5d795208 ] The bodies of __signed_type_use() and __unsigned_type_use() are much the same size as their names - so put the bodies in the only line that expands them. Similarly __signed_type() is defined separately for 64bit and then used exactly once just below. Change the test for __signed_type from CONFIG_64BIT to one based on gcc defined macros so that the code is valid if it gets used outside of a kernel build. 2025-10-15minmax: fix up min3() and max3() tooLinus Torvalds1-2/+10
[ Upstream commit 21b136cc63d2a9ddd60d4699552b69c214b32964 ] David Laight pointed out that we should deal with the min3() and max3() mess too, which still does excessive expansion. And our current macros are actually rather broken. In particular, the macros did this: #define min3(x, y, z) min((typeof(x))min(x, y), z) #define max3(x, y, z) max((typeof(x))max(x, y), z) and that not only is a nested expansion of possibly very complex arguments with all that involves, the typing with that "typeof()" cast is completely wrong. For example, imagine what happens in max3() if 'x' happens to be a 'unsigned char', but 'y' and 'z' are 'unsigned long'. The types are compatible, and there's no warning - but the result is just random garbage. No, I don't think we've ever hit that issue in practice, but since we now have sane infrastructure for doing this right, let's just use it. It fixes any excessive expansion, and also avoids these kinds of broken type issues. 2025-10-15minmax: improve macro expansion and type checkingLinus Torvalds1-15/+59
[ Upstream commit 22f5468731491e53356ba7c028f0fdea20b18e2c ] This clarifies the rules for min()/max()/clamp() type checking and makes them a much more efficient macro expansion. In particular, we now look at the type and range of the inputs to see whether they work together, generating a mask of acceptable comparisons, and then just verifying that the inputs have a shared case: - an expression with a signed type can be used for (1) signed comparisons (2) unsigned comparisons if it is statically known to have a non-negative value - an expression with an unsigned type can be used for (3) unsigned comparison (4) signed comparisons if the type is smaller than 'int' and thus the C integer promotion rules will make it signed anyway Here rule (1) and (3) are obvious, and rule (2) is important in order to allow obvious trivial constants to be used together with unsigned values. Rule (4) is not necessarily a good idea, but matches what we used to do, and we have extant cases of this situation in the kernel. Notably with bcachefs having an expression like min(bch2_bucket_sectors_dirty(a), ca->mi.bucket_size) where bch2_bucket_sectors_dirty() returns an 's64', and 'ca->mi.bucket_size' is of type 'u16'. Technically that bcachefs comparison is clearly sensible on a C type level, because the 'u16' will go through the normal C integer promotion, and become 'int', and then we're comparing two signed values and everything looks sane. However, it's not entirely clear that a 'min(s64,u16)' operation makes a lot of conceptual sense, and it's possible that we will remove rule (4). After all, the _reason_ we have these complicated type checks is exactly that the C type promotion rules are not very intuitive. But at least for now the rule is in place for backwards compatibility. Also note that rule (2) existed before, but is hugely relaxed by this commit. It used to be true only for the simplest compile-time non-negative integer constants. The new macro model will allow cases where the compiler can trivially see that an expression is non-negative even if it isn't necessarily a constant. For example, the amdgpu driver does min_t(size_t, sizeof(fru_info->serial), pia[addr] & 0x3F)); because our old 'min()' macro would see that 'pia[addr] & 0x3F' is of type 'int' and clearly not a C constant expression, so doing a 'min()' with a 'size_t' is a signedness violation. Our new 'min()' macro still sees that 'pia[addr] & 0x3F' is of type 'int', but is smart enough to also see that it is clearly non-negative, and thus would allow that case without any complaints. 2025-10-15minmax: simplify min()/max()/clamp() implementationLinus Torvalds1-23/+20
[ Upstream commit dc1c8034e31b14a2e5e212104ec508aec44ce1b9 ] Now that we no longer have any C constant expression contexts (ie array size declarations or static initializers) that use min() or max(), we can simpify the implementation by not having to worry about the result staying as a C constant expression. So now we can unconditionally just use temporary variables of the right type, and get rid of the excessive expansion that used to come from the use of __builtin_choose_expr(__is_constexpr(...), .. to pick the specialized code for constant expressions. Another expansion simplification is to pass the temporary variables (in addition to the original expression) to our __types_ok() macro. That may superficially look like it complicates the macro, but when we only want the type of the expression, expanding the temporary variable names is much simpler and smaller than expanding the potentially complicated original expression. As a result, on my machine, doing a $ time make drivers/staging/media/atomisp/pci/isp/kernels/ynr/ynr_1.0/ia_css_ynr.host.i goes from real 0m16.621s user 0m15.360s sys 0m1.221s to real 0m2.532s user 0m2.091s sys 0m0.452s because the token expansion goes down dramatically. In particular, the longest line expansion (which was line 71 of that 'ia_css_ynr.host.c' file) shrinks from 23,338kB (yes, 23MB for one single line) to "just" 1,444kB (now "only" 1.4MB). And yes, that line is still the line from hell, because it's doing multiple levels of "min()/max()" expansion thanks to some of them being hidden inside the uDIGIT_FITTING() macro. Lorenzo has a nice cleanup patch that makes that driver use inline functions instead of macros for sDIGIT_FITTING() and uDIGIT_FITTING(), which will fix that line once and for all, but the 16-fold reduction in this case does show why we need to simplify these helpers. 2025-10-02minmax: make generic MIN() and MAX() macros available everywhereLinus Torvalds1-0/+2
[ Upstream commit 1a251f52cfdc417c84411a056bc142cbd77baef4 ] This just standardizes the use of MIN() and MAX() macros, with the very traditional semantics. The goal is to use these for C constant expressions and for top-level / static initializers, and so be able to simplify the min()/max() macros. These macro names were used by various kernel code - they are very traditional, after all - and all such users have been fixed up, with a few different approaches: - trivial duplicated macro definitions have been removed Note that 'trivial' here means that it's obviously kernel code that already included all the major kernel headers, and thus gets the new generic MIN/MAX macros automatically. - non-trivial duplicated macro definitions are guarded with #ifndef This is the "yes, they define their own versions, but no, the include situation is not entirely obvious, and maybe they don't get the generic version automatically" case. - strange use case #1 A couple of drivers decided that the way they want to describe their versioning is with #define MAJ 1 #define MIN 2 #define DRV_VERSION __stringify(MAJ) "." __stringify(MIN) which adds zero value and I just did my Alexander the Great impersonation, and rewrote that pointless Gordian knot as #define DRV_VERSION "1.2" instead. - strange use case #2 A couple of drivers thought that it's a good idea to have a random 'MIN' or 'MAX' define for a value or index into a table, rather than the traditional macro that takes arguments. These values were re-written as C enum's instead. The new function-line macros only expand when followed by an open parenthesis, and thus don't clash with enum use. Happily, there weren't really all that many of these cases, and a lot of users already had the pattern of using '#ifndef' guarding (or in one case just using '#undef MIN') before defining their own private version that does the same thing. I left such cases alone. 2025-10-02minmax: avoid overly complicated constant expressions in VM codeLinus Torvalds1-0/+7
[ Upstream commit 3a7e02c040b130b5545e4b115aada7bacd80a2b6 ] The minmax infrastructure is overkill for simple constants, and can cause huge expansions because those simple constants are then used by other things. For example, 'pageblock_order' is a core VM constant, but because it was implemented using 'min_t()' and all the type-checking that involves, it actually expanded to something like 2.5kB of preprocessor noise. And when that simple constant was then used inside other expansions: #define pageblock_nr_pages (1UL << pageblock_order) #define pageblock_start_pfn(pfn) ALIGN_DOWN((pfn), pageblock_nr_pages) and we then use that inside a 'max()' macro: case ISOLATE_SUCCESS: update_cached = false; last_migrated_pfn = max(cc->zone->zone_start_pfn, pageblock_start_pfn(cc->migrate_pfn - 1)); the end result was that one statement expanding to 253kB in size. There are probably other cases of this, but this one case certainly stood out. I've added 'MIN_T()' and 'MAX_T()' macros for this kind of "core simple constant with specific type" use. These macros skip the type checking, and as such need to be very sparingly used only for obvious cases that have active issues like this. 2025-10-02minmax: add in_range() macroMatthew Wilcox (Oracle)1-0/+27
[ Upstream commit f9bff0e31881d03badf191d3b0005839391f5f2b ] Patch series "New page table range API", v6. This patchset changes the API used by the MM to set up page table entries. The four APIs are: set_ptes(mm, addr, ptep, pte, nr) update_mmu_cache_range(vma, addr, ptep, nr) flush_dcache_folio(folio) flush_icache_pages(vma, page, nr) flush_dcache_folio() isn't technically new, but no architecture implemented it, so I've done that for them. The old APIs remain around but are mostly implemented by calling the new interfaces. The new APIs are based around setting up N page table entries at once. The N entries belong to the same PMD, the same folio and the same VMA, so ptep++ is a legitimate operation, and locking is taken care of for you. Some architectures can do a better job of it than just a loop, but I have hesitated to make too deep a change to architectures I don't understand well. One thing I have changed in every architecture is that PG_arch_1 is now a per-folio bit instead of a per-page bit when used for dcache clean/dirty tracking. This was something that would have to happen eventually, and it makes sense to do it now rather than iterate over every page involved in a cache flush and figure out if it needs to happen. The point of all this is better performance, and Fengwei Yin has measured improvement on x86. I suspect you'll see improvement on your architecture too. This patchset is the basis for much of the anonymous large folio work being done by Ryan, so it's received quite a lot of testing over the last few months. This patch (of 38): Determine if a value lies within a range more efficiently (subtraction + comparison vs two comparisons and an AND). It also has useful (under some circumstances) behaviour if the range exceeds the maximum value of the type. Convert all the conflicting definitions of in_range() within the kernel; some can use the generic definition while others need their own definition. However it also rejects 'unsigned int' v 'unsigned long' compares which are common and never problematc. Replace the 'same type' check with a 'same signedness' check. The new test isn't itself a compile time error, so use static_assert() to report the error and give a meaningful error message. Due to the way builtin_choose_expr() works detecting the error in the 'non-constant' side (where static_assert() can be used) also detects errors when the arguments are constant. 2024-04-03minmax: add umin(a, b) and umax(a, b)David Laight1-0/+17
[ Upstream commit 80fcac55385ccb710d33a20dc1caaef29bd5a921 ] Patch series "minmax: Relax type checks in min() and max()", v4. The min() (etc) functions in minmax.h require that the arguments have exactly the same types. However when the type check fails, rather than look at the types and fix the type of a variable/constant, everyone seems to jump on min_t(). In reality min_t() ought to be rare - when something unusual is being done, not normality. The orginal min() (added in 2.4.9) replaced several inline functions and included the type - so matched the implicit casting of the function call. This was renamed min_t() in 2.4.10 and the current min() added. There is no actual indication that the conversion of negatve values to large unsigned values has ever been an actual problem. A quick grep shows 5734 min() and 4597 min_t(). Having the casts on almost half of the calls shows that something is clearly wrong. If the wrong type is picked (and it is far too easy to pick the type of the result instead of the larger input) then significant bits can get discarded. Pretty much the worst example is in the derived clamp_val(), consider: unsigned char x = 200u; y = clamp_val(x, 10u, 300u); I also suspect that many of the min_t(u16, ...) are actually wrong. For example copy_data() in printk_ringbuffer.c contains: data_size = min_t(u16, buf_size, len); Here buf_size is 'unsigned int' and len 'u16', pass a 64k buffer (can you prove that doesn't happen?) and no data is returned. Apparantly it did - and has since been fixed. The only reason that most of the min_t() are 'fine' is that pretty much all the values in the kernel are between 0 and INT_MAX. Patch 1 adds umin(), this uses integer promotions to convert both arguments to 'unsigned long long'. It can be used to compare a signed type that is known to contain a non-negative value with an unsigned type. The compiler typically optimises it all away. Added first so that it can be referred to in patch 2. Patch 2 replaces the 'same type' check with a 'same signedness' one. This makes min(unsigned_int_var, sizeof()) be ok. The error message is also improved and will contain the expanded form of both arguments (useful for seeing how constants are defined). Patch 3 just fixes some whitespace. Patch 4 allows comparisons of 'unsigned char' and 'unsigned short' to signed types. The integer promotion rules convert them both to 'signed int' prior to the comparison so they can never cause a negative value be converted to a large positive one. Patch 5 (rewritted for v4) allows comparisons of unsigned values against non-negative constant integer expressions. This makes min(unsigned_int_var, 4) be ok. The only common case that is still errored is the comparison of signed values against unsigned constant integer expressions below __INT_MAX__. Typcally min(int_val, sizeof (foo)), the real fix for this is casting the constant: min(int_var, (int)sizeof (foo)). With all the patches applied pretty much all the min_t() could be replaced by min(), and most of the rest by umin(). However they all need careful inspection due to code like: sz = min_t(unsigned char, sz - 1, LIM - 1) + 1; which converts 0 to LIM. This patch (of 6): umin() and umax() can be used when min()/max() errors a signed v unsigned compare when the signed value is known to be non-negative. Unlike min_t(some_unsigned_type, a, b) umin() will never mask off high bits if an inappropriate type is selected. The '+ 0u + 0ul + 0ull' may look strange. The '+ 0u' is needed for 'signed int' on 64bit systems. The '+ 0ul' is needed for 'signed long' on 32bit systems. The '+ 0ull' is needed for 'signed long long'. 2021-05-23linux/bits.h: fix compilation error with GENMASKRikard Falkeborn1-8/+2
GENMASK() has an input check which uses __builtin_choose_expr() to enable a compile time sanity check of its inputs if they are known at compile time. However, it turns out that __builtin_constant_p() does not always return a compile time constant [0]. It was thought this problem was fixed with gcc 4.9 [1], but apparently this is not the case [2]. Switch to use __is_constexpr() instead which always returns a compile time constant, regardless of its inputs.
