2008-12-30ACPICA: Add Buffer->String conversion for predefined methodsBob Moore1-1/+1
For predefined methods (such as _BIF), add automatic conversion for objects that are required to be a String, but a Buffer was found instead. This can happen when reading string battery data from an operation region, because it used to be difficult to convert the data from buffer to string from within the ASL. Linux BZ 11822. http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11822 Signed-off-by: Bob Moore <robert.moore@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Lin Ming <ming.m.lin@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>
2008-10-23ACPICA: New: Validation for predefined ACPI methods/objectsBob Moore1-0/+16
Validates predefined ACPI objects that appear in the namespace, at the time they are evaluated. The argument count and the type of the returned object are validated. The purpose of this validation is to detect problems with the BIOS-exposed predefined ACPI objects before the results are returned to the ACPI-related drivers. 2007-02-03ACPICA: Update copyright to 2007.Bob Moore1-1/+1
Added 2007 copyright to all module headers and signons. This affects virtually every file in the ACPICA core subsystem, iASL compiler, and the utilities. Signed-off-by: Alexey Starikovskiy <alexey.y.starikovskiy@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>
2007-02-03ACPICA: Fix race condition with AcpiWalkNamespace.Bob Moore1-3/+7
Fixed a problem with a possible race condition between threads executing AcpiWalkNamespace and the AML interpreter. This condition was removed by modifying AcpiWalkNamespace to (by default) ignore all temporary namespace entries created during any concurrent control method execution Signed-off-by: Alexey Starikovskiy <alexey.y.starikovskiy@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>
2007-02-03ACPICA: Implement simplified Table ManagerBob Moore1-4/+5
The Table Manager component has been completely redesigned and reimplemented. The new design is much simpler, and reduces the overall code and data size of the kernel-resident ACPICA by approximately 5%. Also, it is now possible to obtain the ACPI tables very early during kernel initialization, even before dynamic memory management is initialized. Restructured, flattened, and simplified the internal interfaces for namespace object evaluation - resulting in smaller code, less CPU stack use, and fewer interfaces. (With assistance from Mikhail Kouzmich) Fixed a problem with the CopyObject operator where the first parameter was not typed correctly for the parser, interpreter, compiler, and disassembler. Caused various errors and unexpected behavior. Fixed a problem where a ShiftLeft or ShiftRight of more than 64 bits produced incorrect results with some C compilers. Since the behavior of C compilers when the shift value is larger than the datatype width is apparently not well defined, the interpreter now detects this condition and simply returns zero as expected in all such cases. (BZ 395) Fixed problem reports (Valery Podrezov) integrated: - Update String-to-Integer conversion to match ACPI 3.0A spec http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5329 Allow interpreter to handle nested method declarations http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5361 Fixed problem reports (Fiodor Suietov) integrated: - acpi_terminate() doesn't free debug memory allocation list objects (BZ 355) - After Core Subsystem shutdown, acpi_subsystem_status() returns AE_OK (BZ 356) - acpi_os_unmap_memory() for RSDP can be invoked inconsistently (BZ 357) - Resource Manager should return AE_TYPE for non-device objects (BZ 358) - Incomplete cleanup branch in AcpiNsEvaluateRelative (BZ 359) - Use acpi_os_free() instead of ACPI_FREE in acpi_rs_set_srs_method_data (BZ 360) - Incomplete cleanup branch in acpi_ps_parse_aml (BZ 361) - Incomplete cleanup branch in acpi_ds_delete_walk_state (BZ 362) - acpi_get_table_header returns AE_NO_ACPI_TABLES until DSDT is loaded (BZ 365) - Status of the Global Initialization Handler call not used (BZ 366) - Incorrect object parameter to Global Initialization Handler (BZ 367) Signed-off-by: Bob Moore <robert.moore@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>

Replaced the acpi_os_queue_for_execution() with a new interface named acpi_os_execute(). The major difference is that the new interface does not have a Priority parameter, this appeared to be useless and has been replaced by a Type parameter. The Type tells the OS what type of execution is being requested, such as global lock handler, notify handler, GPE handler, etc. This allows the host to queue and execute the request as appropriate for the request type, possibly using different work queues and different priorities for the various request types. This enables fixes for multithreading deadlock problems such as http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5534 (Alexey Starikovskiy and Bob Moore) Fixed a possible memory leak associated with the support for the so-called "implicit return" ACPI extension. Reported by FreeBSD (Fiodor Suietov) http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6514 Fixed a problem with the Load() operator where a table load from an operation region could overwrite an internal table buffer by up to 7 bytes and cause alignment faults on IPF systems. Tagged all external interfaces to the subsystem with the new ACPI_EXPORT_SYMBOL macro. This macro can be defined as necessary to assist kernel integration. For Linux, the macro resolves to the EXPORT_SYMBOL macro. The default definition is NULL. Added the ACPI_THREAD_ID type for the return value from acpi_os_get_thread_id(). This allows the host to define this as necessary to simplify kernel integration. The default definition is ACPI_NATIVE_UINT. Valery Podrezov fixed two interpreter problems related to error processing, the deletion of objects, and placing invalid pointers onto the internal operator result stack. http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6028 http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6151 Increased the reference count threshold where a warning is emitted for large reference counts in order to eliminate unnecessary warnings on systems with large namespaces (especially 64-bit.) Increased the value from 0x400 to 0x800. Due to universal disagreement as to the meaning of the 'c' in the calloc() function, the ACPI_MEM_CALLOCATE macro has been renamed to ACPI_ALLOCATE_ZEROED so that the purpose of the interface is 'clear'. ACPI_MEM_ALLOCATE and ACPI_MEM_FREE are renamed to ACPI_ALLOCATE and ACPI_FREE. Signed-off-by: Bob Moore <robert.moore@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>

Added 2006 copyright. At SuSE's suggestion, enabled all error messages without enabling function tracing, ie with CONFIG_ACPI_DEBUG=n Replaced all instances of the ACPI_DEBUG_PRINT macro invoked at the ACPI_DB_ERROR and ACPI_DB_WARN debug levels with the ACPI_REPORT_ERROR and ACPI_REPORT_WARNING macros, respectively. This preserves all error and warning messages in the non-debug version of the ACPICA code (this has been referred to as the "debug lite" option.) Over 200 cases were converted to create a total of over 380 error/warning messages across the ACPICA code. This increases the code and data size of the default non-debug version by about 13K. Added ACPI_NO_ERROR_MESSAGES flag to enable deleting all messages. The size of the debug version remains about the same. Implemented support to ignore an attempt to install/load a particular ACPI table more than once. Apparently there exists BIOS code that repeatedly attempts to load the same SSDT upon certain events. Thanks to Venkatesh Pallipadi. Restructured the main interface to the AML parser in order to correctly handle all exceptional conditions. This will prevent leakage of the OwnerId resource and should eliminate the AE_OWNER_ID_LIMIT exceptions seen on some machines. Thanks to Alexey Starikovskiy. Support for "module level code" has been disabled in this version due to a number of issues that have appeared on various machines. The support can be enabled by defining ACPI_ENABLE_MODULE_LEVEL_CODE during subsystem compilation. When the issues are fully resolved, the code will be enabled by default again. Modified the internal functions for debug print support to define the FunctionName parameter as a (const char *) for compatibility with compiler built-in macros such as __FUNCTION__, etc. Linted the entire ACPICA source tree for both 32-bit and 64-bit. The use of the CPU stack in the debug version of the subsystem has been considerably reduced. Previously, a debug structure was declared in every function that used the debug macros. This structure has been removed in favor of declaring the individual elements as parameters to the debug functions. This reduces the cumulative stack use during nested execution of ACPI function calls at the cost of a small increase in the code size of the debug version of the subsystem. With assistance from Alexey Starikovskiy and Len Brown. Added the ACPI_GET_FUNCTION_NAME macro to enable the compiler-dependent headers to define a macro that will return the current function name at runtime (such as __FUNCTION__ or _func_, etc.) The function name is used by the debug trace output. If ACPI_GET_FUNCTION_NAME is not defined in the compiler-dependent header, the function name is saved on the CPU stack (one pointer per function.) This mechanism is used because apparently there exists no standard ANSI-C defined macro that that returns the function name. Alexey Starikovskiy redesigned and reimplemented the "Owner ID" mechanism used to track namespace objects created/deleted by ACPI tables and control method execution. A bitmap is now used to allocate and free the IDs, thus solving the wraparound problem present in the previous implementation. The size of the namespace node descriptor was reduced by 2 bytes as a result. Removed the UINT32_BIT and UINT16_BIT types that were used for the bitfield flag definitions within the headers for the predefined ACPI tables. These have been replaced by UINT8_BIT in order to increase the code portability of the subsystem. If the use of UINT8 remains a problem, we may be forced to eliminate bitfields entirely because of a lack of portability. Alexey Starikovksiy enhanced the performance of acpi_ut_update_object_reference. This is a frequently used function and this improvement increases the performance of the entire subsystem. Alexey Starikovskiy fixed several possible memory leaks and the inverse - premature object deletion. Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>

Fixed three cases in the interpreter where an "index" argument to an ASL function was still (internally) 32 bits instead of the required 64 bits. This was the Index argument to the Index, Mid, and Match operators. The "strupr" function is now permanently local (acpi_ut_strupr), since this is not a POSIX-defined function and not present in most kernel-level C libraries. References to the C library strupr function have been removed from the headers. Completed the deployment of static functions/prototypes. All prototypes with the static attribute have been moved from the headers to the owning C file. ACPICA 20050329 from Bob Moore An error is now generated if an attempt is made to create a Buffer Field of length zero (A CreateField with a length operand of zero.) The interpreter now issues a warning whenever executable code at the module level is detected during ACPI table load. This will give some idea of the prevalence of this type of code. Implemented support for references to named objects (other than control methods) within package objects. Enhanced package object output for the debug object. Package objects are now completely dumped, showing all elements. Enhanced miscellaneous object output for the debug object. Any object can now be written to the debug object (for example, a device object can be written, and the type of the object will be displayed.) The "static" qualifier has been added to all local functions across the core subsystem. The number of "long" lines (> 80 chars) within the source has been significantly reduced, by about 1/3. Cleaned up all header files to ensure that all CA/iASL functions are prototyped (even static functions) and the formatting is consistent. Two new header files have been added, acopcode.h and acnames.h. Removed several obsolete functions that were no longer used. Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
