commit 04718f7c9290f95385f0dd328758753dc1c36dec upstream. Patch series "userfaultfd/pagemap: pre-existing fixes". These are pre-existing bug fixes that were carried at the front of the userfaultfd RWP working-set-tracking series up to v5 [1]. Per review feedback that fixes should not sit in the middle of a feature series, they are split out and sent on their own; the RWP series is reposted rebased on top of this. All six were flagged by the Sashiko AI review of the RWP series and carry Reported-by: Sashiko AI review <sashiko-bot@kernel.org>. They are independent of RWP, apply to mm-new directly, and carry Cc: stable@. 1: fs/proc/task_mmu: a missing huge_ptep_modify_prot_start() in make_uffd_wp_huge_pte() can lose hardware Dirty/Accessed updates when PAGEMAP_SCAN write-protects a hugetlb PTE. 2: fs/proc/task_mmu: pagemap_scan_hugetlb_entry() compares the range against HPAGE_SIZE rather than the hstate page size, so it never write-protects gigantic hugetlb pages. 3: fs/proc/task_mmu: PAGEMAP_SCAN with PM_SCAN_WP_MATCHING over an unpopulated hugetlb range self-deadlocks -- pagemap_scan_pte_hole() calls uffd_wp_range() while walk_hugetlb_range() holds the hugetlb vma lock for read, and hugetlb_change_protection() then takes it for write. Install the marker inline instead. 4: mm/huge_memory: change_non_present_huge_pmd() drops pmd_swp_uffd_wp on a device-private PMD permission downgrade, silently losing the uffd-wp marker. 5: userfaultfd: must_wait() applies pte_write() to a locklessly read PTE without checking pte_present(), so swap/migration entries decode random offset bits and a thread can stay parked on a stale fault. 6: userfaultfd: __VMA_UFFD_FLAGS feeds VMA_UFFD_MINOR_BIT (41) to mk_vma_flags() unconditionally, an out-of-bounds write into the single-word vma_flags_t on 32-bit. Build the mask from config-gated per-mode masks so an unavailable bit is never materialised. This patch (of 6): make_uffd_wp_huge_pte() arms the UFFD_WP bit on a present HugeTLB PTE by calling huge_ptep_modify_prot_commit() with a ptent snapshot that was fetched without the corresponding huge_ptep_modify_prot_start(). The start helper is what atomically clears the entry so the kernel-owned snapshot stays consistent until the commit; without it, the hardware may set Dirty or Accessed in the live PTE between the original read and the commit, and huge_ptep_modify_prot_commit() (whose generic implementation just calls set_huge_pte_at()) then writes the stale snapshot back over the live hardware bits, losing the update. The non-hugetlb sibling make_uffd_wp_pte() does this correctly via ptep_modify_prot_start() / ptep_modify_prot_commit(). Mirror that pattern for the present-PTE branch. The migration case stays as-is -- migration entries are non-present, so there's no hardware update to race against. [ Upstream commit cd3f8467afd470ccab0de2fbc7c76664af4a0bac ] mm_access() can return NULL if the mm is not found, but this is handled the same as an error in all callers, with some translating this into an -ESRCH error. Only proc_mem_open() returns NULL if no mm is found, however in this case it is clearer and makes more sense to explicitly handle the error. Additionally we take the opportunity to refactor the function to eliminate unnecessary nesting. Simplify things by simply returning -ESRCH if no mm is found - this both eliminates confusing use of the IS_ERR_OR_NULL() macro, and simplifies callers which would return -ESRCH by returning this error directly. [ Upstream commit 6255da28d4bb5349fe18e84cb043ccd394eba75d ] proc_pid_get_link() and proc_pid_readlink() currently look up the task from the pid once, then do the ptrace access check on that task, then look up the task from the pid a second time to do the actual access. That's racy in several ways. To fix it, pass the task to the ->proc_get_link() handler, and instead of proc_fd_access_allowed(), introduce a new helper call_proc_get_link() that looks up and locks the task, does the access check, and calls ->proc_get_link(). 2026-07-24proc: only bump parent nlink when registering directoriesKrzysztof Wilczyński1-5/+4
commit 16b02eb4b9b272c221255c20d34ccd5db53a3ed3 upstream. proc_register() increments the parent directory's link count for every entry it registers, while remove_proc_entry() and remove_proc_subtree() decrement it only when the removed entry is a directory. Regular files thus inflate the parent's count while they exist, and leak one link permanently on every create and remove cycle. For example, /proc/bus/pci/00 with twenty-two device files and no subdirectories reports nlink 24 instead of 2, and SR-IOV VF enable and disable cycles, each creating and removing the VF config space entries under /proc/bus/pci/<bus>, inflate the link count of that directory without bound. Before commit e06689bf5701 ("proc: change ->nlink under proc_subdir_lock"), the increment lived in proc_mkdir_data() and proc_create_mount_point(), and was therefore applied only to directories. Moving it into proc_register() to bring it under proc_subdir_lock dropped the S_ISDIR check. Thus, move the nlink accounting into pde_subdir_insert() and pde_erase(), only updating it for directories in both, so the link count is always changed together with the directory entry itself. The walker hands the callback a huge_page_size()-sized range, never start + HPAGE_SIZE, so the comparison always declares it partial and aborts the WP. Compare against the actual hstate's page size. A PAGEMAP_SCAN ioctl requesting PM_SCAN_WP_MATCHING on a hugetlb VMA hangs the calling thread, unkillably, as soon as the scan reaches an unpopulated part of the range: do_pagemap_scan() walk_page_range() walk_hugetlb_range() hugetlb_vma_lock_read() # take the vma lock for read ... pagemap_scan_pte_hole() # ... ->pte_hole() for a hole uffd_wp_range() change_protection() hugetlb_change_protection() hugetlb_vma_lock_write() # ... and block taking it for write walk_hugetlb_range() holds the hugetlb vma lock for read across the whole walk. A present entry goes to ->hugetlb_entry(); an unpopulated one goes to ->pte_hole(), i.e. pagemap_scan_pte_hole(). To write-protect the hole that handler calls uffd_wp_range(), which on a hugetlb VMA reaches hugetlb_change_protection() and takes the same vma lock for write. The thread then blocks in down_write() waiting for the read lock it is itself holding. The populated path avoids this: pagemap_scan_hugetlb_entry() write-protects the entry inline under the page-table lock and never enters hugetlb_change_protection(). Do the same for holes. Fault in the page table and install the uffd-wp marker directly with make_uffd_wp_huge_pte() under the page-table lock, rather than routing through uffd_wp_range(). That is the same sequence hugetlb_change_protection() runs for an unpopulated entry, minus the vma write lock -- which is safe to skip because PMD sharing is disabled on uffd-wp VMAs (hugetlb_unshare_all_pmds() runs at registration), leaving nothing for that lock to serialise against. The commit 65c66047259f ("proc: fix the issue of proc_mem_open returning NULL") caused proc_maps_open() to return -ESRCH when proc_mem_open() returns NULL. This breaks legitimate /proc/<pid>/maps access for kernel threads since kernel threads have NULL mm_struct. We should use RB_CLEAR_NODE() set the erased node to EMPTY, then pde_subdir_next() will return NULL to avoid uaf access. We found an uaf issue while using stress-ng testing, need to run testcase getdent and tun in the same time. The steps of the issue is as follows: 1) use getdent to traverse dir /proc/pid/net/dev_snmp6/, and current pde is tun3; 2) in the [time windows] unregister netdevice tun3 and tun2, and erase them from rbtree. erase tun3 first, and then erase tun2. the pde(tun2) will be released to slab; 3) continue to getdent process, then pde_subdir_next() will return pde(tun2) which is released, it will case uaf access. To avoid potential UAF issues during module removal races, we use pde_set_flags() to save proc_ops flags in PDE itself before proc_register(), and then use pde_has_proc_*() helpers instead of directly dereferencing pde->proc_ops->*. However, the pde_set_flags() call was missing when creating net related proc files. This omission caused incorrect behavior which FMODE_LSEEK was being cleared inappropriately in proc_reg_open() for net proc files. Lars reported it in this link[1]. Fix this by ensuring pde_set_flags() is called when register proc entry, and add NULL check for proc_ops in pde_set_flags(). On some large machines with a high number of CPUs running a 64K pagesize kernel, we found that the 'RES' field is always 0 displayed by the top command for some processes, which will cause a lot of confusion for users. Intuitively, the batch number should be optimized, but on some paths, performance may take precedence over statistical accuracy. Therefore, introducing a new interface to add the percpu statistical count and display it to users, which can remove the confusion. In addition, this change is not expected to be on a performance-critical path, so the modification should be acceptable. In addition, the 'mm->rss_stat' is updated by using add_mm_counter() and dec/inc_mm_counter(), which are all wrappers around percpu_counter_add_batch(). In percpu_counter_add_batch(), there is percpu batch caching to avoid 'fbc->lock' contention. This patch changes task_mem() and task_statm() to get the accurate mm counters under the 'fbc->lock', but this should not exacerbate kernel 'mm->rss_stat' lock contention due to the percpu batch caching of the mm counters. The following test also confirm the theoretical analysis. I run the stress-ng that stresses anon page faults in 32 threads on my 32 cores machine, while simultaneously running a script that starts 32 threads to busy-loop pread each stress-ng thread's /proc/pid/status interface. [ Upstream commit b969f9614885c20f903e1d1f9445611daf161d6d ] There's one case where ->d_compare() can be called for an in-lookup dentry; usually that's nothing special from ->d_compare() point of view, but... proc_sys_compare() is weird. The thing is, /proc/sys subdirectories can look differently for different processes. Up to and including having the same name resolve to different dentries - all of them hashed. The way it's done is ->d_compare() refusing to admit a match unless this dentry is supposed to be visible to this caller. The information needed to discriminate between them is stored in inode; it is set during proc_sys_lookup() and until it's done d_splice_alias() we really can't tell who should that dentry be visible for. Normally there's no negative dentries in /proc/sys; we can run into a dying dentry in RCU dcache lookup, but those can be safely rejected. However, ->d_compare() is also called for in-lookup dentries, before they get positive - or hashed, for that matter. In case of match we will wait until dentry leaves in-lookup state and repeat ->d_compare() afterwards. In other words, the right behaviour is to treat the name match as sufficient for in-lookup dentries; if dentry is not for us, we'll see that when we recheck once proc_sys_lookup() is done with it. While we are at it, fix the misspelled READ_ONCE and WRITE_ONCE there. 2025-02-17fs/proc: do_task_stat: Fix ESP not readable during coredumpNam Cao1-1/+1
commit ab251dacfbae28772c897f068a4184f478189ff2 upstream. The field "eip" (instruction pointer) and "esp" (stack pointer) of a task can be read from /proc/PID/stat. These fields can be interesting for coredump. However, these fields were disabled by commit 0a1eb2d474ed ("fs/proc: Stop reporting eip and esp in /proc/PID/stat"), because it is generally unsafe to do so. But it is safe for a coredumping process, and therefore exceptions were made: - for a coredumping thread by commit fd7d56270b52 ("fs/proc: Report eip/esp in /prod/PID/stat for coredumping"). - for all other threads in a coredumping process by commit cb8f381f1613 ("fs/proc/array.c: allow reporting eip/esp for all coredumping threads"). The above two commits check the PF_DUMPCORE flag to determine a coredump thread and the PF_EXITING flag for the other threads. Unfortunately, commit 92307383082d ("coredump: Don't perform any cleanups before dumping core") moved coredump to happen earlier and before PF_EXITING is set. Thus, checking PF_EXITING is no longer the correct way to determine threads in a coredumping process. Instead of PF_EXITING, use PF_POSTCOREDUMP to determine the other threads. Checking of PF_EXITING was added for coredumping, so it probably can now be removed. But it doesn't hurt to keep. Since commit 5cbcb62dddf5 ("fs/proc: fix softlockup in __read_vmcore") the number of softlockups in __read_vmcore at kdump time have gone down, but they still happen sometimes. In a memory constrained environment like the kdump image, a softlockup is not just a harmless message, but it can interfere with things like RCU freeing memory, causing the crashdump to get stuck. The second loop in __read_vmcore has a lot more opportunities for natural sleep points, like scheduling out while waiting for a data write to happen, but apparently that is not always enough. Add a cond_resched() to the second loop in __read_vmcore to (hopefully) get rid of the softlockups. seq_printf is costy, on a system with n CPUs, reading /proc/softirqs would yield 10*n decimal values, and the extra cost parsing format string grows linearly with number of cpus. Replace seq_printf with seq_put_decimal_ull_width have significant performance improvement. On an 8CPUs system, reading /proc/softirqs show ~40% performance gain with this patch. show show_smap_vma_flags() has been a using misspelled initializer in mnemonics[] - it needed to initialize 2 element array of char and it used NUL-padded 2 character string literals (i.e. 3-element initializer). This has been spotted by gcc-15[*]; prior to that gcc quietly dropped the 3rd eleemnt of initializers. To fix this we are increasing the size of mnemonics[] (from mnemonics[BITS_PER_LONG][2] to mnemonics[BITS_PER_LONG][3]) to accomodate the NUL-padded string literals. This also helps us in simplyfying the logic for printing of the flags as instead of printing each character from the mnemonics[], we can just print the mnemonics[] using seq_printf. When /proc/kcore is read an attempt to read the first two pages results in HW-specific page swap on s390 and another (so called prefix) pages are accessed instead. That leads to a wrong read. Allow architecture-specific translation of memory addresses using kc_xlate_dev_mem_ptr() and kc_unxlate_dev_mem_ptr() callbacks similarily to /dev/mem xlate_dev_mem_ptr() and unxlate_dev_mem_ptr() callbacks. That way an architecture can deal with specific physical memory ranges. Re-use the existing /dev/mem callback implementation on s390, which handles the described prefix pages swapping correctly. For other architectures the default callback is basically NOP. It is expected the condition (vaddr == __va(__pa(vaddr))) always holds true for KCORE_RAM memory type. But as we started to work on this, we found lots of interesting issues in the shared code and infrastructure, the fixes for which the various archs needed to base their work. So in the end, this turned into a nice collaborative effort fixing up issues and porting to 5 new architectures -- arm64, powerpc64, powerpc32, s390x, and loongarch64 -- with everybody pitching in and commenting on each other's code. It was a fun development cycle. This contains: - Numerous fixups to the vDSO selftest infrastructure, getting it running successfully on more platforms, and fixing bugs in it. - Additions to the vDSO getrandom & chacha selftests. Basically every time manual review unearthed a bug in a revision of an arch patch, or an ambiguity, the tests were augmented. By the time the last arch was submitted for review, s390x, v1 of the series was essentially fine right out of the gate. - Fixes to the the generic C implementation of vDSO getrandom, to build and run successfully on all archs, decoupling it from assumptions we had (unintentionally) made on x86_64 that didn't carry through to the other architectures. - Port of vDSO getrandom to LoongArch64, from Xi Ruoyao and acked by Huacai Chen. - Port of vDSO getrandom to ARM64, from Adhemerval Zanella and acked by Will Deacon. - Port of vDSO getrandom to PowerPC, in both 32-bit and 64-bit varieties, from Christophe Leroy and acked by Michael Ellerman. - Port of vDSO getrandom to S390X from Heiko Carstens, the arch maintainer. While it'd be natural for there to be things to fix up over the course of the development cycle, these patches got a decent amount of review from a fairly diverse crew of folks on the mailing lists, and, for the most part, they've been cooking in linux-next, which has been helpful for ironing out build issues. In terms of architectures, I think that mostly takes care of the important 64-bit archs with hardware still being produced and running production loads in settings where vDSO getrandom is likely to help. New callbacks are added to struct console: - write_thread() for flushing nbcon consoles in task context. - write_atomic() for flushing nbcon consoles in atomic context, including NMI. - con->device_lock() and device_unlock() for taking the driver specific lock, for example, port->lock. New printk-specific kthreads are created: - per-console kthreads which get responsible for flushing normal priority messages on nbcon consoles. - thread which gets responsible for flushing normal priority messages on all consoles when CONFIG_RT enabled. The new callbacks are called under a special per-console lock which has already been added back in v6.7. It allows to distinguish three severities: normal, emergency, and panic. A context with a higher priority could take over the ownership when it is safe even in the middle of handling a record. The panic context could do it even when it is not safe. But it is allowed only for the final desperate flush before entering the infinite loop. The new lock helps to flush the messages directly in emergency and panic contexts. But it is not enough in all situations: - console_lock() is still need for synchronization against boot consoles. - con->device_lock() is need for synchronization against other operations on the same HW, e.g. serial port speed setting, non-printk related read/write. The dependency on con->device_lock() is mutual. Any code taking the driver specific lock has to acquire the related nbcon console context as well. For example, see the new uart_port_lock() API. It provides the necessary synchronization against emergency and panic contexts where the messages are flushed only under the new per-console lock. Maybe surprisingly, a quite tricky part is the decision how to flush the consoles in various situations. It has to take into account: - message priority: normal, emergency, panic - scheduling context: task, atomic, deferred_legacy - registered consoles: boot, legacy, nbcon - threads are running: early boot, suspend, shutdown, panic - caller: printk(), pr_flush(), printk_flush_in_panic(), console_unlock(), console_start(), ... The primary decision is made in printk_get_console_flush_type(). It creates a hint what the caller should do: - flush nbcon consoles directly or via the kthread - call the legacy loop (console_unlock()) directly or via irq_work The existing behavior is preserved for the legacy consoles. The only exception is that they are not longer flushed directly from printk() in panic() before CPUs are stopped. But this blocking happens only when at least one nbcon console is registered. The motivation is to increase a chance to produce the crash dump. They legacy consoles might create a deadlock in compare with nbcon consoles. The nbcon console should allow to see the messages even when the crash dump fails. There are three possible ways how nbcon consoles are flushed: - The per-nbcon-console kthread is responsible for flushing messages added with the normal priority. This is the default mode. - The legacy loop, aka console_unlock(), is used when there is still a boot console registered. There is no easy way how to match an early console driver with a nbcon console driver. And the console_lock() provides the only reliable serialization at the moment. The legacy loop uses either con->write_atomic() or con->write_thread() callbacks depending on whether it is allowed to schedule. The atomic variant has to be used from printk(). - In other situations, the messages are flushed directly using write_atomic() which can be called in any context, including NMI. It is primary needed during early boot or shutdown, in emergency situations, and panic. The emergency priority is used by a code called within nbcon_cpu_emergency_enter()/exit(). At the moment, it is used in four situations: WARN(), Oops, lockdep, and RCU stall reports. Finally, there is no nbcon console at the moment. It means that the changes should _not_ modify the existing behavior. This adds a Kconfig option and boot param to allow removing the FOLL_FORCE flag from /proc/<pid>/mem write calls as this can be used in various attacks. The traditional forcing behavior is kept as default because it can break GDB and some other use cases. This is the simpler version that you had requested. - Restrict overmounting of ephemeral entities. It is currently possible to mount on top of various ephemeral entities in procfs. This specifically includes magic links. To recap, magic links are links of the form /proc/<pid>/fd/<nr>. They serve as references to a target file and during path lookup they cause a jump to the target path. Such magic links disappear if the corresponding file descriptor is closed. Currently it is possible to overmount such magic links. This is mostly interesting for an attacker that wants to somehow trick a process into e.g., reopening something that it didn't intend to reopen or to hide a malicious file descriptor. But also it risks leaking mounts for long-running processes. When overmounting a magic link like above, the mount will not be detached when the file descriptor is closed. Only the target mountpoint will disappear. Which has the consequence of making it impossible to unmount that mount afterwards. So the mount will stick around until the process exits and the /proc/<pid>/ directory is cleaned up during proc_flush_pid() when the dentries are pruned and invalidated. That in turn means it's possible for a program to accidentally leak mounts and it's also possible to make a task leak mounts without it's knowledge if the attacker just keeps overmounting things under /proc/<pid>/fd/<nr>.
