2025-12-07fs/proc: fix uaf in proc_readdir_de()Wei Yang1-3/+9
commit 895b4c0c79b092d732544011c3cecaf7322c36a1 upstream. Pde is erased from subdir rbtree through rb_erase(), but not set the node to EMPTY, which may result in uaf access. We should use RB_CLEAR_NODE() set the erased node to EMPTY, then pde_subdir_next() will return NULL to avoid uaf access. We found an uaf issue while using stress-ng testing, need to run testcase getdent and tun in the same time. The steps of the issue is as follows: 1) use getdent to traverse dir /proc/pid/net/dev_snmp6/, and current pde is tun3; 2) in the [time windows] unregister netdevice tun3 and tun2, and erase them from rbtree. erase tun3 first, and then erase tun2. the pde(tun2) will be released to slab; 3) continue to getdent process, then pde_subdir_next() will return pde(tun2) which is released, it will case uaf access. 2025-07-17fix proc_sys_compare() handling of in-lookup dentriesAl Viro2-8/+12
[ Upstream commit b969f9614885c20f903e1d1f9445611daf161d6d ] There's one case where ->d_compare() can be called for an in-lookup dentry; usually that's nothing special from ->d_compare() point of view, but... proc_sys_compare() is weird. The thing is, /proc/sys subdirectories can look differently for different processes. Up to and including having the same name resolve to different dentries - all of them hashed. The way it's done is ->d_compare() refusing to admit a match unless this dentry is supposed to be visible to this caller. The information needed to discriminate between them is stored in inode; it is set during proc_sys_lookup() and until it's done d_splice_alias() we really can't tell who should that dentry be visible for. Normally there's no negative dentries in /proc/sys; we can run into a dying dentry in RCU dcache lookup, but those can be safely rejected. However, ->d_compare() is also called for in-lookup dentries, before they get positive - or hashed, for that matter. In case of match we will wait until dentry leaves in-lookup state and repeat ->d_compare() afterwards. In other words, the right behaviour is to treat the name match as sufficient for in-lookup dentries; if dentry is not for us, we'll see that when we recheck once proc_sys_lookup() is done with it. While we are at it, fix the misspelled READ_ONCE and WRITE_ONCE there. If NR_CPUS threads call do_task_stat() at the same time and the process has NR_THREADS, it will spin with irqs disabled O(NR_CPUS * NR_THREADS) time. Change do_task_stat() to use sig->stats_lock to gather the statistics outside of ->siglock protected section, in the likely case this code will run lockless. Since commit 5cbcb62dddf5 ("fs/proc: fix softlockup in __read_vmcore") the number of softlockups in __read_vmcore at kdump time have gone down, but they still happen sometimes. In a memory constrained environment like the kdump image, a softlockup is not just a harmless message, but it can interfere with things like RCU freeing memory, causing the crashdump to get stuck. The second loop in __read_vmcore has a lot more opportunities for natural sleep points, like scheduling out while waiting for a data write to happen, but apparently that is not always enough. Add a cond_resched() to the second loop in __read_vmcore to (hopefully) get rid of the softlockups. 2024-12-14proc/softirqs: replace seq_printf with seq_put_decimal_ull_widthDavid Wang1-1/+1
[ Upstream commit 84b9749a3a704dcc824a88aa8267247c801d51e4 ] seq_printf is costy, on a system with n CPUs, reading /proc/softirqs would yield 10*n decimal values, and the extra cost parsing format string grows linearly with number of cpus. Replace seq_printf with seq_put_decimal_ull_width have significant performance improvement. On an 8CPUs system, reading /proc/softirqs show ~40% performance gain with this patch. The traditional forcing behavior is kept as default because it can break GDB and some other use cases. Previously we tried a more sophisticated approach allowing distributions to fine-tune /proc/pid/mem behavior, however that got NAK-ed by Linus [1], who prefers this simpler approach with semantics also easier to understand for users. With all other page_mapcount() users in the tree gone, move page_mapcount() to fs/proc/internal.h, rename it and extend the documentation to prevent future (ab)use. ... of course, I find some issues while working on that code that I sort first ;) We'll now only end up calling page_mapcount() [now folio_precise_page_mapcount()] on pages mapped via present page table entries. Except for /proc/kpagecount, that still does questionable things, but we'll leave that legacy interface as is for now. Did a quick sanity check. Likely we would want some better selfestest for /proc/$/pagemap + smaps. I'll see if I can find some time to write some more. This patch (of 6): Looks like we never taught pagemap_pmd_range() about the existence of PMD-mapped file THPs. commit 5cbcb62dddf5346077feb82b7b0c9254222d3445 upstream. While taking a kernel core dump with makedumpfile on a larger system, softlockup messages often appear. While softlockup warnings can be harmless, they can also interfere with things like RCU freeing memory, which can be problematic when the kdump kexec image is configured with as little memory as possible. Avoid the softlockup, and give things like work items and RCU a chance to do their thing during __read_vmcore by adding a cond_resched. lock_task_sighand() [ Upstream commit 60f92acb60a989b14e4b744501a0df0f82ef30a3 ] Patch series "fs/proc: do_task_stat: use sig->stats_". do_task_stat() has the same problem as getrusage() had before "getrusage: use sig->stats_lock rather than lock_task_sighand()": a hard lockup. If NR_CPUS threads call lock_task_sighand() at the same time and the process has NR_THREADS, spin_lock_irq will spin with irqs disabled O(NR_CPUS * NR_THREADS) time. This patch (of 3): thread_group_cputime() does its own locking, we can safely shift thread_group_cputime_adjusted() which does another for_each_thread loop outside of ->siglock protected section. Not only this removes for_each_thread() from the critical section with irqs disabled, this removes another case when stats_lock is taken with siglock held. We want to remove this dependency, then we can change the users of stats_lock to not disable irqs. The only information imparted here is whether or not a process is currently blocked in the scheduler (and even this doesn't need to be exact). Avoid doing the heavy lifting of stack walking and just report that information by using task_is_running(). commit 8001f49394e353f035306a45bcf504f06fca6355 upstream. The code that checks for unknown boot options is unaware of the sysctl alias facility, which maps bootparams to sysctl values. If a user sets an old value that has a valid alias, a message about an invalid parameter will be printed during boot, and the parameter will get passed to init. Fix by checking for the existence of aliased parameters in the unknown boot parameter code. If an alias exists, don't return an error or pass the value to init. The lockup detector is enabled before SMP is brought online, but do_sysctl_args runs afterwards. If a user wants to set softlockup_panic on boot and have it trigger should a softlockup occur during onlining of the non-boot processors, they could do this prior to commit f117955a2255 ("kernel/watchdog.c: convert {soft/hard}lockup boot parameters to sysctl aliases"). However, after this commit the value of softlockup_panic is set too late to be of help for this type of problem. Restore the prior behavior. 2023-10-06proc: nommu: /proc/<pid>/maps: release mmap read lockBen Wolsieffer1-12/+15

The no-MMU implementation of /proc/<pid>/map doesn't normally release the mmap read lock, because it uses !IS_ERR_OR_NULL(_vml) to determine whether to release the lock. Since _vml is NULL when the end of the mappings is reached, the lock is not released. Reading /proc/1/maps twice doesn't cause a hang because it only takes the read lock, which can be taken multiple times and therefore doesn't show any problem if the lock isn't released. Instead, you need to perform some operation that attempts to take the write lock after reading /proc/<pid>/maps. This code was incorrectly adapted from the MMU implementation, which at the time released the lock in m_next() before returning the last entry. The MMU implementation has diverged further from the no-MMU version since then, so this patch brings their locking and error handling into sync, fixing the bug and hopefully avoiding similar issues in the future. Due to an oversight in commit 1b3044e39a89 ("procfs: fix pthread cross-thread naming if !PR_DUMPABLE") in switching from REG to NOD, chmod operations on /proc/thread-self/comm were no longer blocked as they are on almost all other procfs files. A very similar situation with /proc/self/environ was used to as a root exploit a long time ago, but procfs has SB_I_NOEXEC so this is simply a correctness issue. This issue of mapcount in hugetlb pages referenced by shared PMDs was discussed in [1]. The following two patches address user visible behavior caused by this issue. This is because only the first process increases the map count, and subsequent processes just add the shared PMD page to their page table. page_mapcount is being used to decide if a hugetlb page is shared or private in /proc/PID/smaps. Pages referenced via a shared PMD were incorrectly being counted as private. To fix, check for a shared PMD if mapcount is 1. If a shared PMD is found count the hugetlb page as shared. Finally had time to respin the series of the work we had started last year on cleaning up the kernel/sysct.c kitchen sink. People keeps stuffing their sysctls in that file and this creates a maintenance burden. So this effort is aimed at placing sysctls where they actually belong. I'm going to split patches up into series as there is quite a bit of work. This first set adds register_sysctl_init() for uses of registerting a sysctl on the init path, adds const where missing to a few places, generalizes common values so to be more easy to share, and starts the move of a few kernel/sysctl.c out where they belong. The majority of rework on v2 in this first patch set is 0-day fixes. Eric Biederman's feedback is later addressed in subsequent patch sets. I'll only post the first two patch sets for now. We can address the rest once the first two patch sets get completely reviewed / Acked. This patch (of 9): The kernel/sysctl.c is a kitchen sink where everyone leaves their dirty dishes, this makes it very difficult to maintain. To help with this maintenance let's start by moving sysctls to places where they actually belong. The proc sysctl maintainers do not want to know what sysctl knobs you wish to add for your own piece of code, we just care about the core logic. Today though folks heavily rely on tables on kernel/sysctl.c so they can easily just extend this table with their needed sysctls. In order to help users move their sysctls out we need to provide a helper which can be used during code initialization. We special-case the initialization use of register_sysctl() since it *is* safe to fail, given all that sysctls do is provide a dynamic interface to query or modify at runtime an existing variable. So the use case of register_sysctl() on init should *not* stop if the sysctls don't end up getting registered. It would be counter productive to stop boot if a simple sysctl registration failed. Provide a helper for init then, and document the recommended init levels to use for callers of this routine. We will later use this in subsequent patches to start slimming down kernel/sysctl.c tables and moving sysctl registration to the code which actually needs these sysctls. Introducing two booleans for it and set it to false when !pte_present() for both pte and pmd accountings. The bug is found during code reading and no real world issue reported, but logically such an error can cause incorrect readings for either smaps or smaps_rollup output on quite a few fields. For example, it could cause over-estimate on values like Shared_Dirty, Private_Dirty, Referenced. Or it could also cause under-estimate on values like LazyFree, Shared_Clean, Private_Clean. That's because proc_pid_make_inode() adds proc inode in reverse order by invoking hlist_add_head_rcu(). But proc should not add any inodes under '/proc/tgid' except '/proc/tgid/task/pid', fix it by adding inode into 'pid->inodes' only if the inode is /proc/tgid or /proc/tgid/task/pid. Performance regression: Create 200 tasks, each task open one file for 50,000 times. Kill all tasks when opened files exceed 10,000,000 (cat /proc/sys/fs/file-nr). Before fix: $ time killall -wq aa real 4m40.946s # During this period, we can see 'ps' and 'systemd' taking high cpu usage. MADV_FREE may split THPs if it is called for partial THP. It may trigger the below race: CPU A CPU B ----- ----- smaps walk: MADV_FREE: page_mapcount() PageCompound() split_huge_page() page = compound_head(page) PageDoubleMap(page) When calling PageDoubleMap() this page is not a tail page of THP anymore so the BUG is triggered. This could be fixed by elevated refcount of the page before calling mapcount, but that would prevent it from counting migration entries, and it seems overkilling because the race just could happen when PMD is split so all PTE entries of tail pages are actually migration entries, and smaps_account() does treat migration entries as mapcount == 1 as Kirill pointed out. Add a new parameter for smaps_account() to tell this entry is migration entry then skip calling page_mapcount(). Don't skip getting mapcount for device private entries since they do track references with mapcount. Pagemap also has the similar issue although it was not reported. Fixed it as well. [ Upstream commit a130e8fbc7de796eb6e680724d87f4737a26d0ac ] /proc/uptime reports idle time by reading the CPUTIME_IDLE field from the per-cpu kcpustats. However, on NO_HZ systems, idle time is not continually updated on idle cpus, leading this value to appear incorrectly small. /proc/stat performs an accounting update when reading idle time; we can use the same approach for uptime. With this patch, /proc/stat and /proc/uptime now agree on idle time. 2021-07-01procfs: allow reading fdinfo with PTRACE_MODE_READKalesh Singh2-3/+16
Android captures per-process system memory state when certain low memory events (e.g a foreground app kill) occur, to identify potential memory hoggers. In order to measure how much memory a process actually consumes, it is necessary to include the DMA buffer sizes for that process in the memory accounting. Since the handle to DMA buffers are raw FDs, it is important to be able to identify which processes have FD references to a DMA buffer. Currently, DMA buffer FDs can be accounted using /proc/<pid>/fd/* and /proc/<pid>/fdinfo -- both are only readable by the process owner, as follows: 1. Do a readlink on each FD. 2. If the target path begins with "/dmabuf", then the FD is a dmabuf FD. 3. stat the file to get the dmabuf inode number. 4. Read/ proc/<pid>/fdinfo/<fd>, to get the DMA buffer size. Accessing other processes' fdinfo requires root privileges. This limits the use of the interface to debugging environments and is not suitable for production builds. Granting root privileges even to a system process increases the attack surface and is highly undesirable. Since fdinfo doesn't permit reading process memory and manipulating process state, allow accessing fdinfo under PTRACE_MODE_READ_FSCRED. Patch series "Add support for SVM atomics in Nouveau", v11. Introduction ============ Some devices have features such as atomic PTE bits that can be used to implement atomic access to system memory. To support atomic operations to a shared virtual memory page such a device needs access to that page which is exclusive of the CPU. This series introduces a mechanism to temporarily unmap pages granting exclusive access to a device. These changes are required to support OpenCL atomic operations in Nouveau to shared virtual memory (SVM) regions allocated with the CL_MEM_SVM_ATOMICS clSVMAlloc flag. Implementation ============== Exclusive device access is implemented by adding a new swap entry type (SWAP_DEVICE_EXCLUSIVE) which is similar to a migration entry. The main difference is that on fault the original entry is immediately restored by the fault handler instead of waiting. Restoring the entry triggers calls to MMU notifers which allows a device driver to revoke the atomic access permission from the GPU prior to the CPU finalising the entry. Patches ======= Patches 1 & 2 refactor existing migration and device private entry functions. Patches 3 & 4 rework try_to_unmap_one() by splitting out unrelated functionality into separate functions - try_to_migrate_one() and try_to_munlock_one(). Patch 5 renames some existing code but does not introduce functionality. Patch 6 is a small clean-up to swap entry handling in copy_pte_range(). Patch 7 contains the bulk of the implementation for device exclusive memory. Patch 8 contains some additions to the HMM selftests to ensure everything works as expected. Patch 9 is a cleanup for the Nouveau SVM implementation. Patch 10 contains the implementation of atomic access for the Nouveau driver. Testing ======= This has been tested with upstream Mesa 21.1.0 and a simple OpenCL program which checks that GPU atomic accesses to system memory are atomic. Without this series the test fails as there is no way of write-protecting the page mapping which results in the device clobbering CPU writes. This patch (of 10): Remove multiple similar inline functions for dealing with different types of special swap entries. Both migration and device private swap entries use the swap offset to store a pfn. Instead of multiple inline functions to obtain a struct page for each swap entry type use a common function pfn_swap_entry_to_page(). Also open-code the various entry_to_pfn() functions as this results is shorter code that is easier to understand. hwpoisoned pages Let's avoid reading: 1) Offline memory sections: the content of offline memory sections is stale as the memory is effectively unused by the kernel. On s390x with standby memory, offline memory sections (belonging to offline storage increments) are not accessible. With virtio-mem and the hyper-v balloon, we can have unavailable memory chunks that should not be accessed inside offline memory sections. Last but not least, offline memory sections might contain hwpoisoned pages which we can no longer identify because the memmap is stale. 2) PG_offline pages: logically offline pages that are documented as "The content of these pages is effectively stale. Such pages should not be touched (read/write/dump/save) except by their owner.". Examples include pages inflated in a balloon or unavailble memory ranges inside hotplugged memory sections with virtio-mem or the hyper-v balloon. 3) PG_hwpoison pages: Reading pages marked as hwpoisoned can be fatal. As documented: "Accessing is not safe since it may cause another machine check. Don't touch!" Introduce is_page_hwpoison(), adding a comment that it is inherently racy but best we can really do. Reading /proc/kcore now performs similar checks as when reading /proc/vmcore for kdump via makedumpfile: problematic pages are exclude. It's also similar to hibernation code, however, we don't skip hwpoisoned pages when processing pages in kernel/power/snapshot.c:saveable_page() yet. Note 1: we can race against memory offlining code, especially memory going offline and getting unplugged: however, we will properly tear down the identity mapping and handle faults gracefully when accessing this memory from kcore code. Note 2: we can race against drivers setting PageOffline() and turning memory inaccessible in the hypervisor. We'll handle this in a follow-up patch. Patch series "fs/proc/kcore: don't read offline sections, logically offline pages and hwpoisoned pages", v3. Looking for places where the kernel might unconditionally read PageOffline() pages, I stumbled over /proc/kcore; turns out /proc/kcore needs some more love to not touch some other pages we really don't want to read -- i.e., hwpoisoned ones. Examples for PageOffline() pages are pages inflated in a balloon, memory unplugged via virtio-mem, and partially-present sections in memory added by the Hyper-V balloon. When reading pages inflated in a balloon, we essentially produce unnecessary load in the hypervisor; holes in partially present sections in case of Hyper-V are not accessible and already were a problem for /proc/vmcore, fixed in makedumpfile by detecting PageOffline() pages. In the future, virtio-mem might disallow reading unplugged memory -- marked as PageOffline() -- in some environments, resulting in undefined behavior when accessed; therefore, I'm trying to identify and rework all these (corner) cases. With this series, there is really only access via /dev/mem, /proc/vmcore and kdb left after I ripped out /dev/kmem. kdb is an advanced corner-case use case -- we won't care for now if someone explicitly tries to do nasty things by reading from/writing to physical addresses we better not touch. /dev/mem is a use case we won't support for virtio-mem, at least for now, so we'll simply disallow mapping any virtio-mem memory via /dev/mem next. /proc/vmcore is really only a problem when dumping the old kernel via something that's not makedumpfile (read: basically never), however, we'll try sanitizing that as well in the second kernel in the future.
