2023-10-17fbdev: core: syscopyarea: fix sloppy typingSergey Shtylyov1-1/+1
In sys_copyarea(), the local variable bits_per_line is needlessly typed as *unsigned long* -- which is a 32-bit type on the 32-bit arches and a 64-bit type on the 64-bit arches; that variable's value is derived from the __u32 typed fb_fix_screeninfo::line_length field (multiplied by 8u) and a 32-bit *unsigned int* type should still be enough to store the # of bits per line. Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with the Svace static analysis tool. Signed-off-by: Sergey Shtylyov <s.shtylyov@omp.ru> Signed-off-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de>

2023-10-12fbdev: Replace fb_pgprotect() with pgprot_framebuffer()Thomas Zimmermann1-1/+2
Rename the fbdev mmap helper fb_pgprotect() to pgprot_framebuffer(). The helper sets VMA page-access flags for framebuffers in device I/O memory. Also clean up the helper's parameters and return value. Instead of the VMA instance, pass the individial parameters separately: existing page-access flags, the VMAs start and end addresses and the offset in the underlying device memory rsp file. Return the new page-access flags. These changes align pgprot_framebuffer() with other pgprot_() functions. v4: * fix commit message (Christophe) v3: * rename fb_pgprotect() to pgprot_framebuffer() (Arnd) Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Reviewed-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Acked-by: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> # m68k Reviewed-by: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20230922080636.26762-3-tzimmermann@suse.de

2023-09-18drm: fix up fbdev Kconfig defaultsArnd Bergmann1-1/+1
As a result of the recent Kconfig reworks, the default settings for the framebuffer interfaces changed in unexpected ways: Configurations that leave CONFIG_FB disabled but use DRM now get DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION by default. This also turns on the deprecated /dev/fb device nodes for machines that don't actually want it. In turn, configurations that previously had DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION enabled now only get the /dev/fb front-end but not the more useful framebuffer console, which is not selected any more. We had previously decided that any combination of the three frontends (FB_DEVICE, FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE and LOGO) should be selectable, but the new default settings mean that a lot of defconfig files would have to get adapted. Change the defaults back to what they were in Linux 6.5: - Leave DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION turned off unless CONFIG_FB is enabled. Previously this was a hard dependency but now the two are independent. However, configurations that enable CONFIG_FB probably also want to keep the emulation for DRM, while those without FB presumably did that intentionally in the past. - Leave FB_DEVICE turned off for FB=n. Following the same logic, the deprecated option should not automatically get enabled here, most users that had FB turned off in the past do not want it, even if they want the console - Turn the FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE option on if DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION is set to avoid having to change defconfig files that relied on it being selected unconditionally in the past. This also makes sense since both LOGO and FB_DEVICE are now disabled by default for builds without CONFIG_FB, but DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION would make no sense if all three are disabled. 2023-07-24fbdev: Add fb_ops init macros for framebuffers in DMA-able memoryThomas Zimmermann1-0/+8
Add initializer macros for struct fb_ops for framebuffers in DMA-able memory areas. Also add a corresponding Kconfig token. As of now, this is equivalent to system framebuffers and mostly useful for labeling drivers correctly. A later patch may add a generic DMA-specific mmap operation. 2023-07-22fbdev: Split frame buffer support in FB and FB_CORE symbolsJavier Martinez Canillas2-17/+23
Currently the CONFIG_FB option has to be enabled even if no legacy fbdev drivers are needed (e.g: only to have support for framebuffer consoles). The DRM subsystem has a fbdev emulation layer, but depends on CONFIG_FB and so it can only be enabled if that dependency is enabled as well. That means fbdev drivers have to be explicitly disabled if users want to enable CONFIG_FB, only to use fbcon and/or the DRM fbdev emulation layer. This patch introduces a non-visible CONFIG_FB_CORE symbol that could be enabled just to have core support needed for CONFIG_DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION, allowing CONFIG_FB to be disabled (and automatically disabling all the fbdev drivers). Nothing from fb_backlight.o and fbmon.o is used by the DRM fbdev emulation layer so these two objects can be compiled out when CONFIG_FB is disabled. 2023-06-27fbdev: Make support for userspace interfaces configurableThomas Zimmermann2-3/+42
Add Kconfig option CONFIG_FB_DEVICE and make the virtual fbdev device optional. If the new option has not been selected, fbdev does not create files in devfs, sysfs or procfs. Most modern Linux systems run a DRM-based graphics stack that uses the kernel's framebuffer console, but has otherwise deprecated fbdev support. Yet fbdev userspace interfaces are still present. The option makes it possible to use the fbdev subsystem as console implementation without support for userspace. This closes potential entry points to manipulate kernel or I/O memory via framebuffers. It also prevents the execution of driver code via ioctl or sysfs, both of which might allow malicious software to exploit bugs in the fbdev code. A small number of fbdev drivers require struct fbinfo.dev to be initialized, usually for the support of sysfs interface. Make these drivers depend on FB_DEVICE. They can later be fixed if necessary. v3: * effect -> affect in Kconfig help (Daniel) v2: * set FB_DEVICE default to y (Geert) * comment on {get,put}_device() (Sam) * Kconfig fixes (Sam) * add TODO item about FB_DEVICE dependencies (Sam) Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Acked-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org> Reviewed-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20230613110953.24176-39-tzimmermann@suse.de

Replace include statements for <asm/fb.h> with <linux/fb.h>. Fixes the coding style: if a header is available in asm/ and linux/, it is preferable to include the header from linux/. This only affects a few source files, most of which already include <linux/fb.h>. 2023-05-08fbdev: Move I/O read and write code into helper functionsThomas Zimmermann3-117/+136
Move the existing I/O read and write code for I/O memory into the new helpers fb_cfb_read() and fb_cfb_write(). Make them the default fp_ops. No functional changes. In the near term, the new functions will be useful to the DRM subsystem, which currently provides it's own implementation. It can then use the shared code. In the longer term, it might make sense to revise the I/O helper's default status and make them opt-in by the driver. Systems that don't use them would not contain the code any longer. v2: * add detailed commit message (Javier) * rename fb_cfb_() to fb_io_() (Geert) * add fixes that got lost while moving the code (Geert) Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Tested-by: Sui Jingfeng <suijingfeng@loongson.cn> Reviewed-by: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> Acked-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> Reviewed-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20230428122452.4856-19-tzimmermann@suse.de
2023-05-08fbdev: Validate info->screen_{base, buffer} in fb_ops implementationsThomas Zimmermann2-2/+14
Push the test for info->screen_base from fb_read() and fb_write() into the implementations of struct fb_ops.{fb_read,fb_write}. In cases where the driver operates on info->screen_buffer, test this field instead. While bothi fields, screen_base and screen_buffer, are stored in the same location, they refer to different address spaces. For correctness, we want to test each field in exactly the code that uses it. v2: * also test screen_base in pvr2fb (Geert) * also test screen_buffer in ivtvfb, arcfb, broadsheetfb, hecubafb, metronomefb and ssd1307fb (Geert) * give a rational for the change (Geert) Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Tested-by: Sui Jingfeng <suijingfeng@loongson.cn> Reviewed-by: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> Acked-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20230428122452.4856-18-tzimmermann@suse.de
2023-05-08fbdev: Don't re-validate info->state in fb_ops implementationsThomas Zimmermann1-6/+0
