The patch is wrong as it checks vc_origin against vc_screenbuf, while in text mode it should compare against vga_vram_base. 2025-07-06dummycon: Trigger redraw when switching consoles with deferred takeoverThomas Zimmermann1-5/+13
[ Upstream commit 03bcbbb3995ba5df43af9aba45334e35f2dfe27b ] Signal vt subsystem to redraw console when switching to dummycon with deferred takeover enabled. Makes the console switch to fbcon and displays the available output. With deferred takeover enabled, dummycon acts as the placeholder until the first output to the console happens. At that point, fbcon takes over. If the output happens while dummycon is not active, it cannot inform fbcon. This is the case if the vt subsystem runs in graphics mode. A typical graphical boot starts plymouth, a display manager and a compositor; all while leaving out dummycon. Switching to a text-mode console leaves the console with dummycon even if a getty terminal has been started. Returning true from dummycon's con_switch helper signals the vt subsystem to redraw the screen. If there's output available dummycon's con_putc{s} helpers trigger deferred takeover of fbcon, which sets a display mode and displays the output. Our further experiments show that in most cases, vc->vc_origin equals to vga_vram_base when the console is in KD_TEXT mode, and it's around vc->vc_screenbuf for the KD_GRAPHICS mode. But via triggerring a TIOCL_SETVESABLANK ioctl beforehand, we can make vc->vc_origin be around vc->vc_screenbuf while the console is in KD_TEXT mode, and then by writing the special 'ESC M' control sequence to the tty certain times (depends on the value of `vc->state.y - vc->vc_top`), we can eventually move vc->vc_origin prior to vc->vc_screenbuf. [ Upstream commit 5bbcc7645f4b244ffb5ac6563fbe9d3d42194447 ] mdacon has roughly the same dependencies as vgacon but expresses them as a negative list instead of a positive list, with the only practical difference being PowerPC/CHRP, which uses vga16fb instead of vgacon. The CONFIG_MDA_CONSOLE description advises to only turn it on when vgacon is also used because MDA/Hercules-only systems should be using vgacon instead, so just change the list to enforce that directly for simplicity. The probing was broken from 2002 to 2008, this improves on the fix that was added then: If vgacon is a loadable module, then mdacon cannot be built-in now, and the list of systems that support vgacon is carried over. 2023-09-18drm: fix up fbdev Kconfig defaultsArnd Bergmann1-0/+1
As a result of the recent Kconfig reworks, the default settings for the framebuffer interfaces changed in unexpected ways: Configurations that leave CONFIG_FB disabled but use DRM now get DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION by default. This also turns on the deprecated /dev/fb device nodes for machines that don't actually want it. In turn, configurations that previously had DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION enabled now only get the /dev/fb front-end but not the more useful framebuffer console, which is not selected any more. We had previously decided that any combination of the three frontends (FB_DEVICE, FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE and LOGO) should be selectable, but the new default settings mean that a lot of defconfig files would have to get adapted. Change the defaults back to what they were in Linux 6.5: - Leave DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION turned off unless CONFIG_FB is enabled. Previously this was a hard dependency but now the two are independent. However, configurations that enable CONFIG_FB probably also want to keep the emulation for DRM, while those without FB presumably did that intentionally in the past. - Leave FB_DEVICE turned off for FB=n. Following the same logic, the deprecated option should not automatically get enabled here, most users that had FB turned off in the past do not want it, even if they want the console - Turn the FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE option on if DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION is set to avoid having to change defconfig files that relied on it being selected unconditionally in the past. This also makes sense since both LOGO and FB_DEVICE are now disabled by default for builds without CONFIG_FB, but DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION would make no sense if all three are disabled. 2023-07-22fbdev: Split frame buffer support in FB and FB_CORE symbolsJavier Martinez Canillas1-1/+1
Currently the CONFIG_FB option has to be enabled even if no legacy fbdev drivers are needed (e.g: only to have support for framebuffer consoles). The DRM subsystem has a fbdev emulation layer, but depends on CONFIG_FB and so it can only be enabled if that dependency is enabled as well. That means fbdev drivers have to be explicitly disabled if users want to enable CONFIG_FB, only to use fbcon and/or the DRM fbdev emulation layer. This patch introduces a non-visible CONFIG_FB_CORE symbol that could be enabled just to have core support needed for CONFIG_DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION, allowing CONFIG_FB to be disabled (and automatically disabling all the fbdev drivers). Nothing from fb_backlight.o and fbmon.o is used by the DRM fbdev emulation layer so these two objects can be compiled out when CONFIG_FB is disabled. Also update the config and build rules such that the code depends on the config symbol CONFIG_STI_CORE, which STI console and STI framebuffer select automatically. Cleans up the console makefile and prepares PARISC to implement fb_is_primary_device() within the arch/ directory. No functional changes. This moves 32x32 font size limitation checking down to drivers, so that fbcon can allow large fonts. We still keep a limitation to 64x128 pixels so as to have a simple bounded allocation for con_font_get and in the userland kbd tool. That glyph size will however be enough to have 128x36 characters on a "16/9 8K display". The current con_font_get/set API currently hardcodes a 32-pixel-tall limitation, which only dates from the old VGA hardware which could not handle taller fonts than that. This change just adds a vpitch parameter to release this constraint. Drivers which do not support vpitch != 32 can just return EINVAL when it is not 32, font loading tools will revert to trying 32 and succeed. This change makes the fbcon driver consider vpitch appropriately, thus making it able to load large fonts. 2022-06-27drm: Implement DRM aperture helpers under video/Thomas Zimmermann1-0/+1
Implement DRM's aperture helpers under video/ for sharing with other sub-systems. Remove DRM-isms from the interface. The helpers track the ownership of framebuffer apertures and provide hand-over from firmware, such as EFI and VESA, to native graphics drivers. Other subsystems, such as fbdev and vfio, also have to maintain ownership of framebuffer apertures. Moving DRM's aperture helpers to a more public location allows all subsystems to interact with each other and share a common implementation. The aperture helpers are selected by the various firmware drivers within DRM and fbdev, and the VGA text-console driver. The nds32 architecture, also known as AndeStar V3, is a custom 32-bit RISC target designed by Andes Technologies. Support was added to the kernel in 2016 as the replacement RISC-V based V5 processors were already announced, and maintained by (current or former) Andes employees. As explained by Alan Kao, new customers are now all using RISC-V, and all known nds32 users are already on longterm stable kernels provided by Andes, with no development work going into mainline support any more. While the port is still in a reasonably good shape, it only gets worse over time without active maintainers, so it seems best to remove it before it becomes unusable. As always, if it turns out that there are mainline users after all, and they volunteer to maintain the port in the future, the removal can be reverted. 2022-02-02fbcon: Add option to enable legacy hardware accelerationHelge Deller1-0/+20
Add a config option CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_LEGACY_ACCELERATION to enable bitblt and fillrect hardware acceleration in the framebuffer console. If disabled, such acceleration will not be used, even if it is supported by the graphics hardware driver. If you plan to use DRM as your main graphics output system, you should disable this option since it will prevent compiling in code which isn't used later on when DRM takes over. For all other configurations, e.g. if none of your graphic cards support DRM (yet), DRM isn't available for your architecture, or you can't be sure that the graphic card in the target system will support DRM, you most likely want to enable this option. In the non-accelerated case (e.g. when DRM is used), the inlined fb_scrollmode() function is hardcoded to return SCROLL_REDRAW and as such the compiler is able to optimize much unneccesary code away. In this v3 patch version I additionally changed the GETVYRES() and GETVXRES() macros to take a pointer to the fbcon_display struct. This fixes the build when console rotation is enabled and helps the compiler again to optimize out code. Fix a division by zero in `vgacon_resize' with a backtrace like: vgacon_resize vc_do_resize vgacon_init do_bind_con_driver do_unbind_con_driver fbcon_fb_unbind do_unregister_framebuffer do_register_framebuffer register_framebuffer __drm_fb_helper_initial_config_and_unlock drm_helper_hpd_irq_event dw_hdmi_irq irq_thread kthread caused by `c->vc_cell_height' not having been initialized. This has only started to trigger with commit 860dafa90259 ("vt: Fix character height handling with VT_RESIZEX"), however the ultimate offender is commit 50ec42edd978 ("[PATCH] Detaching fbcon: fix vgacon to allow retaking of the console"). Said commit has added a call to `vc_resize' whenever `vgacon_init' is called with the `init' argument set to 0, which did not happen before. And the call is made before a key vgacon boot parameter retrieved in `vgacon_startup' has been propagated in `vgacon_init' for `vc_resize' to use to the console structure being worked on. Previously the parameter was `c->vc_font.height' and now it is `c->vc_cell_height'. In this particular scenario the registration of fbcon has failed and vt resorts to vgacon. Now fbcon does have initialized `c->vc_font.height' somehow, unlike `c->vc_cell_height', which is why this code did not crash before, but either way the boot parameters should have been copied to the console structure ahead of the call to `vc_resize' rather than afterwards, so that first the call has a chance to use them and second they do not change the console structure to something possibly different from what was used by `vc_resize'. Move the propagation of the vgacon boot parameters ahead of the call to `vc_resize' then. Adjust the comment accordingly. Restore the original intent of the VT_RESIZEX ioctl's `v_clin' parameter which is the number of pixel rows per character (cell) rather than the height of the font used. For framebuffer devices the two values are always the same, because the former is inferred from the latter one. For VGA used as a true text mode device these two parameters are independent from each other: the number of pixel rows per character is set in the CRT controller, while font height is in fact hardwired to 32 pixel rows and fonts of heights below that value are handled by padding their data with blanks when loaded to hardware for use by the character generator. One can change the setting in the CRT controller and it will update the screen contents accordingly regardless of the font loaded. The `v_clin' parameter is used by the `vgacon' driver to set the height of the character cell and then the cursor position within. Make the parameter explicit then, by defining a new `vc_cell_height' struct member of `vc_data', set it instead of `vc_font.height' from `v_clin' in the VT_RESIZEX ioctl, and then use it throughout the `vgacon' driver except where actual font data is accessed which as noted above is independent from the CRTC setting. This way the framebuffer console driver is free to ignore the `v_clin' parameter as irrelevant, as it always should have, avoiding any issues attempts to give the parameter a meaning there could have caused, such as one that has led to commit 988d0763361b ("vt_ioctl: make VT_RESIZEX behave like VT_RESIZE"): "syzbot is reporting UAF/OOB read at bit_putcs()/soft_cursor() [1][2], for vt_resizex() from ioctl(VT_RESIZEX) allows setting font height larger than actual font height calculated by con_font_set() from ioctl(PIO_FONT). Since fbcon_set_font() from con_font_set() allocates minimal amount of memory based on actual font height calculated by con_font_set(), use of vt_resizex() can cause UAF/OOB read for font data." 2021-05-13vgacon: Record video mode changes with VT_RESIZEXMaciej W. Rozycki1-3/+11
Fix an issue with VGA console font size changes made after the initial video text mode has been changed with a user tool like `svgatextmode' calling the VT_RESIZEX ioctl. As it stands in that case the original screen geometry continues being used to validate further VT resizing. Consequently when the video adapter is firstly reprogrammed from the original say 80x25 text mode using a 9x16 character cell (720x400 pixel resolution) to say 80x37 text mode and the same character cell (720x592 pixel resolution), and secondly the CRTC character cell updated to 9x8 (by loading a suitable font with the KD_FONT_OP_SET request of the KDFONTOP ioctl), the VT geometry does not get further updated from 80x37 and only upper half of the screen is used for the VT, with the lower half showing rubbish corresponding to whatever happens to be there in the video memory that maps to that part of the screen. Of course the proportions change according to text mode geometries and font sizes chosen. Address the problem then, by updating the text mode geometry defaults rather than checking against them whenever the VT is resized via a user ioctl. Signed-off-by: Maciej W. 2020-11-16console: Delete dummy con_font_set() and con_font_default() callback ↵Peilin Ye1-14/+0
implementations .con_font_set and .con_font_default callbacks should not pass `struct console_font *` as a parameter, since `struct console_font` is a UAPI structure. We are trying to let them use our new kernel font descriptor, `struct font_desc` instead. To make that work slightly easier, first delete all of their no-op implementations used by dummy consoles. This will make KD_FONT_OP_SET and KD_FONT_OP_SET_DEFAULT ioctl() requests on dummy consoles start to fail and return `-ENOSYS`, which is intended, since no user should ever expect such operations to succeed on dummy consoles. Recently in commit 3c4e0dff2095 ("vt: Disable KD_FONT_OP_COPY") we disabled the KD_FONT_OP_COPY ioctl() option. Delete all the con_font_copy() callbacks, since we no longer use them. Mark KD_FONT_OP_COPY as "obsolete" in include/uapi/linux/kd.h, just like what we have done for PPPIOCDETACH in commit af8d3c7c001a ("ppp: remove the PPPIOCDETACH ioctl"). `width` and `height` are defined as unsigned in our UAPI font descriptor `struct console_font`. Make them unsigned in our kernel font descriptor `struct font_desc`, too. Also, change the corresponding printk() format identifiers from `%d` to `%u`, in sti_select_fbfont().
