2018-10-13tty: Drop tty->count on tty_reopen() failureDmitry Safonov1-3/+8
commit fe32416790093b31364c08395727de17ec96ace1 upstream. In case of tty_ldisc_reinit() failure, tty->count should be decremented back, otherwise we will never release_tty(). 2018-10-10serial: mvebu-uart: Fix reporting of effective CSIZE to userspaceJan Kiszka1-1/+3
commit e0bf2d4982fe7d9ddaf550dd023803ea286f47fc upstream. Apparently, this driver (or the hardware) does not support character length settings. It's apparently running in 8-bit mode, but it makes userspace believe it's in 5-bit mode. That makes tcsetattr with CS8 incorrectly fail, breaking e.g. getty from busybox, thus the login shell on ttyMVx. Fix by hard-wiring CS8 into c_cflag. commit 3216c622a24b0ebb9c159a8d1daf7f17a106b3f5 upstream. The function tty_port_tty_get() gets a reference to the tty. Since the code is not using tty_port_tty_set(), the reference is kept even after closing the tty. Avoid using tty_port_tty_get() by directly access the tty instance. Since lpuart_start_rx_dma() is called from the .startup() and .set_termios() callback, it is safe to assume the tty instance is valid. Indeed, the lock acquired in uart_put_char() is uport->lock, i.e. not the same lock. Anyway, since the lock is not acquired, if uart_shutdown() is called, the last chunk of that function may release state->xmit.buf before its assigned to null, and cause the race above. To fix it, let's lock uport->lock when allocating/deallocating state->xmit.buf in addition to the per-port mutex. v2: switch to locking uport->lock on allocation/deallocation instead of locking the per-port mutex in uart_put_char. Note that since uport->lock is a spin lock, we have to switch the allocation to GFP_ATOMIC. v3: move the allocation outside the lock, so we can switch back to GFP_KERNEL Signed-off-by: Tycho Andersen <tycho@tycho.ws> Cc: stable <stable@vger.kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>

2018-08-22serial: 8250_dw: always set baud rate in dw8250_set_termiosChen Hu1-1/+1

If it is happened, tty_insert_flip_string_fixed_flag can be executed concurrently. This can lead slab out-of-bounds write in tty_insert_flip_string_fixed_flag. Call sequences are as follows. 2018-08-03hvc_opal: don't set tb_ticks_per_usec in udbg_init_opal_common()Stewart Smith1-1/+0
[ Upstream commit 447808bf500a7cc92173266a59f8a494e132b122 ] time_init() will set up tb_ticks_per_usec based on reality. time_init() is called *after* udbg_init_opal_common() during boot. from arch/powerpc/kernel/time.c: unsigned long tb_ticks_per_usec = 100; /* sane default */ Currently, all powernv systems have a timebase frequency of 512mhz (512000000/1000000 == 0x200) - although there's nothing written down anywhere that I can find saying that we couldn't make that different based on the requirements in the ISA. So, we've been (accidentally) thwacking the (currently) correct (for powernv at least) value for tb_ticks_per_usec earlier than we otherwise would have. The "sane default" seems to be adequate for our purposes between udbg_init_opal_common() and time_init() being called, and if it isn't, then we should probably be setting it somewhere that isn't hvc_opal.c! 2018-07-11n_tty: Access echo_* variables carefully.Tetsuo Handa1-18/+24
commit ebec3f8f5271139df618ebdf8427e24ba102ba94 upstream. syzbot is reporting stalls at __process_echoes() [1]. This is because since ldata->echo_commit < ldata->echo_tail becomes true for some reason, the discard loop is serving as almost infinite loop. This patch tries to avoid falling into ldata->echo_commit < ldata->echo_tail situation by making access to echo_* variables more carefully. Since reset_buffer_flags() is called without output_lock held, it should not touch echo_* variables. And omit a call to reset_buffer_flags() from n_tty_open() by using vzalloc(). Since add_echo_byte() is called without output_lock held, it needs memory barrier between storing into echo_buf[] and incrementing echo_head counter. echo_buf() needs corresponding memory barrier before reading echo_buf[]. Lack of handling the possibility of not-yet-stored multi-byte operation might be the reason of falling into ldata->echo_commit < ldata->echo_tail situation, for if I do WARN_ON(ldata->echo_commit == tail + 1) prior to echo_buf(ldata, tail + 1), the WARN_ON() fires. Also, explicitly masking with buffer for the former "while" loop, and use ldata->echo_commit > tail for the latter "while" loop. 2018-07-03serial: sh-sci: Use spin_{try}lock_irqsave instead of open coding versionDaniel Wagner1-5/+3
commit 8afb1d2c12163f77777f84616a8e9444d0050ebe upstream. Commit 40f70c03e33a ("serial: sh-sci: add locking to console write function to avoid SMP lockup") copied the strategy to avoid locking problems in conjuncture with the console from the UART8250 driver. Instead using directly spin_{try}lock_irqsave(), local_irq_save() followed by spin_{try}lock() was used. While this is correct on mainline, for -rt it is a problem. spin_{try}lock() will check if it is running in a valid context. Since the local_irq_save() has already been executed, the context has changed and spin_{try}lock() will complain. The reason why spin_{try}lock() complains is that on -rt the spin locks are turned into mutexes and therefore can sleep. Sleeping with interrupts disabled is not valid. 2018-06-16tty: pl011: Avoid spuriously stuck-off interruptsDave Martin1-0/+16
commit 4a7e625ce50412a7711efa0f2ef0b96ce3826759 upstream. Commit 9b96fbacda34 ("serial: PL011: clear pending interrupts") clears the RX and receive timeout interrupts on pl011 startup, to avoid a screaming-interrupt scenario that can occur when the firmware or bootloader leaves these interrupts asserted. This has been noted as an issue when running Linux on qemu [1]. Unfortunately, the above fix seems to lead to potential misbehaviour if the RX FIFO interrupt is asserted _non_ spuriously on driver startup, if the RX FIFO is also already full to the trigger level. Clearing the RX FIFO interrupt does not change the FIFO fill level. In this scenario, because the interrupt is now clear and because the FIFO is already full to the trigger level, no new assertion of the RX FIFO interrupt can occur unless the FIFO is drained back below the trigger level. This never occurs because the pl011 driver is waiting for an RX FIFO interrupt to tell it that there is something to read, and does not read the FIFO at all until that interrupt occurs. Thus, simply clearing "spurious" interrupts on startup may be misguided, since there is no way to be sure that the interrupts are truly spurious, and things can go wrong if they are not. This patch instead clears the interrupt condition by draining the RX FIFO during UART startup, after clearing any potentially spurious interrupt. This should ensure that an interrupt will definitely be asserted if the RX FIFO subsequently becomes sufficiently full. The drain is done at the point of enabling interrupts only. This means that it will occur any time the UART is newly opened through the tty layer. It will not apply to polled-mode use of the UART by kgdboc: since that scenario cannot use interrupts by design, this should not matter. kgdboc will interact badly with "normal" use of the UART in any case: this patch makes no attempt to paper over such issues. This patch does not attempt to address the case where the RX FIFO fills faster than it can be drained: that is a pathological hardware design problem that is beyond the scope of the driver to work around. As a failsafe, the number of poll iterations for draining the FIFO is limited to twice the FIFO size. This will ensure that the kernel at least boots even if it is impossible to drain the FIFO for some reason. 2018-06-16serial: 8250: omap: Fix idling of clocks for unused uartsTony Lindgren1-1/+15
commit 13dc04d0e5fdc25c8f713ad23fdce51cf2bf96ba upstream. I noticed that unused UARTs won't necessarily idle properly always unless at least one byte tx transfer is done first. After some debugging I narrowed down the problem to the scr register dma configuration bits that need to be set before softreset for the clocks to idle. Unless we do this, the module clkctrl idlest bits may be set to 1 instead of 3 meaning the clock will never idle and is blocking deeper idle states for the whole domain. This might be related to the configuration done by the bootloader or kexec booting where certain configurations cause the 8250 or the clkctrl clock to jam in a way where setting of the scr bits and reset is needed to clear it. I've tried diffing the 8250 registers for the various modes, but did not see anything specific. So far I've only seen this on omap4 but I'm suspecting this might also happen on the other clkctrl using SoCs considering they already have a quirk enabled for UART_ERRATA_CLOCK_DISABLE. Let's fix the issue by configuring scr before reset for basic dma even if we don't use it. The scr register will be reset when we do softreset few lines after, and we restore scr on resume. We should do this for all the SoCs with UART_ERRATA_CLOCK_DISABLE quirk flag set since the ones with UART_ERRATA_CLOCK_DISABLE are all based using clkctrl similar to omap4. Looks like both OMAP_UART_SCR_DMAMODE_1 | OMAP_UART_SCR_DMAMODE_CTL bits are needed for the clkctrl to idle after a softreset. And we need to add omap4 to also use the UART_ERRATA_CLOCK_DISABLE for the related workaround to be enabled. This same compatible value will also be used for omap5. commit 9594b5be7ec110ed11acec58fa94f3f293668c85 upstream. I was puzzled while looking at /proc/interrupts and random things showed up between reboots. This occurred more often but I realised it later. The "correct" output should be: |38: 11861 atmel-aic5 2 Level ttyS0 but I saw sometimes |38: 6426 atmel-aic5 2 Level tty1 and accounted it wrongly as correct. This is use after free and the former example randomly got the "old" pointer which pointed to the same content. With SLAB_FREELIST_RANDOM and HARDENED I even got |38: 7067 atmel-aic5 2 Level E=Started User Manager for UID 0 or other nonsense. As it turns out the tty, pointer that is accessed in atmel_startup(), is freed() before atmel_shutdown(). It seems to happen quite often that the tty for ttyS0 is allocated and freed while ->shutdown is not invoked. I don't do anything special - just a systemd boot :) Use dev_name(&pdev->dev) as the IRQ name for request_irq(). This exists as long as the driver is loaded so no use-after-free here. [ Upstream commit 2e9fe539108320820016f78ca7704a7342788380 ] Currently, data in RX FIFO is read based on UART_LSR register state even if RDI and RLSI interrupts are disabled in UART_IER register. This is because when IRQ handler is called due to TX FIFO empty event, RX FIFO is serviced based on UART_LSR register status instead of UART_IIR status. This defeats the purpose of disabling UART RX FIFO interrupts during throttling(see, omap_8250_throttle()) as IRQ handler continues to drain UART RX FIFO resulting in overflow of buffer at tty layer. Fix this by making sure that driver drains UART RX FIFO only when UART_IIR_RDI is set along with UART_LSR_BI or UART_LSR_DR bits. 2018-05-02earlycon: Use a pointer table to fix __earlycon_table strideDaniel Kurtz1-2/+4
commit dd709e72cb934eefd44de8d9969097173fbf45dc upstream. Commit 99492c39f39f ("earlycon: Fix __earlycon_table stride") tried to fix __earlycon_table stride by forcing the earlycon_id struct alignment to 32 and asking the linker to 32-byte align the __earlycon_table symbol. This fix was based on commit 07fca0e57fca92 ("tracing: Properly align linker defined symbols") which tried a similar fix for the tracing subsystem. However, this fix doesn't quite work because there is no guarantee that gcc will place structures packed into an array format. In fact, gcc 4.9 chooses to 64-byte align these structs by inserting additional padding between the entries because it has no clue that they are supposed to be in an array. If we are unlucky, the linker will assign symbol "__earlycon_table" to a 32-byte aligned address which does not correspond to the 64-byte aligned contents of section "__earlycon_table". To address this same problem, the fix to the tracing system was subsequently re-implemented using a more robust table of pointers approach by commits: 3d56e331b653 ("tracing: Replace syscall_meta_data struct array with pointer array") 654986462939 ("tracepoints: Fix section alignment using pointer array") e4a9ea5ee7c8 ("tracing: Replace trace_event struct array with pointer array") Let's use this same "array of pointers to structs" approach for EARLYCON_TABLE. commit b2d89ad9c9682e795ed6eeb9ed455789ad6cedf1 upstream. At least on droid 4 with control channel in ADM mode, there is no response to Modem Status Command (MSC). Currently gsmtty_modem_update() expects to have data in dlci->modem_rx unless debug & 2 is set. This means that on droid 4, things only work if debug & 2 is set. Let's fix the issue by ignoring empty dlci->modem_rx for ADM mode. In the AMD mode, CMD_MSC will never respond and gsm_process_modem() won't get called to set dlci->modem_rx. And according to ts_127010v140000p.pdf, MSC is only relevant if basic option is chosen, so let's test for that too. 2018-05-02tty: n_gsm: Fix long delays with control frame timeouts in ADM modeTony Lindgren1-1/+11
commit e9ec22547986dd32c5c70da78107ce35dbff1344 upstream. Commit ea3d8465ab9b ("tty: n_gsm: Allow ADM response in addition to UA for control dlci") added support for DLCI to stay in Asynchronous Disconnected Mode (ADM). But we still get long delays waiting for commands to other DLCI to complete: --> 5) C: SABM(P) Q> 0) C: UIH(F) Q> 0) C: UIH(F) Q> 0) C: UIH(F) ... This happens because gsm_control_send() sets cretries timer to T2 that is by default set to 34. This will cause resend for T2 times for the control frame. In ADM mode, we will never get a response so the control frame, so retries are just delaying all the commands. Let's fix the issue by setting DLCI_MODE_ADM flag after detecting the ADM mode for the control DLCI. Then we can use that in gsm_control_send() to set retries to 1. This means the control frame will be sent once allowing the other end at an opportunity to switch from ADM to ABM mode. Note that retries will be decremented in gsm_control_retransmit() so we don't want to set it to 0 here. 2018-04-24tty: make n_tty_read() always abort if hangup is in progressTejun Heo2-0/+15
commit 28b0f8a6962a24ed21737578f3b1b07424635c9e upstream. A tty is hung up by __tty_hangup() setting file->f_op to hung_up_tty_fops, which is skipped on ttys whose write operation isn't tty_write(). This means that, for example, /dev/console whose write op is redirected_tty_write() is never actually marked hung up. Because n_tty_read() uses the hung up status to decide whether to abort the waiting readers, the lack of hung-up marking can lead to the following scenario. 1. A session contains two processes. The leader and its child. The child ignores SIGHUP. 2. The leader exits and starts disassociating from the controlling terminal (/dev/console). 3. __tty_hangup() skips setting f_op to hung_up_tty_fops. 4. SIGHUP is delivered and ignored. 5. tty_ldisc_hangup() is invoked. It wakes up the waits which should clear the read lockers of tty->ldisc_sem. 6. The reader wakes up but because tty_hung_up_p() is false, it doesn't abort and goes back to sleep while read-holding tty->ldisc_sem. 7. The leader progresses to tty_ldisc_lock() in tty_ldisc_hangup() and is now stuck in D sleep indefinitely waiting for tty->ldisc_sem. The following is Alan's explanation on why some ttys aren't hung up. http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20171101170908.6ad08580@alans-desktop 1. It broke the serial consoles because they would hang up and close down the hardware. With tty_port that *should* be fixable properly for any cases remaining. 2. The console layer was (and still is) completely broken and doens't refcount properly. So if you turn on console hangups it breaks (as indeed does freeing consoles and half a dozen other things). As neither can be fixed quickly, this patch works around the problem by introducing a new flag, TTY_HUPPING, which is used solely to tell n_tty_read() that hang-up is in progress for the console and the readers should be aborted regardless of the hung-up status of the device. The following is a sample hung task warning caused by this issue. INFO: task agetty:2662 blocked for more than 120 seconds. 2018-04-13tty: n_gsm: Allow ADM response in addition to UA for control dlciTony Lindgren1-3/+14
[ Upstream commit ea3d8465ab9b3e01be329ac5195970a84bef76c5 ] Some devices have the control dlci stay in ADM mode instead of the UA mode. This can seen at least on droid 4 when trying to open the ts 27.010 mux port. Enabling n_gsm debug mode shows the control dlci always respond with DM to SABM instead of UA: # modprobe n_gsm debug=0xff # ldattach -d GSM0710 /dev/ttyS0 & gsmld_output: 00000000: f9 03 3f 01 1c f9 --> 0) C: SABM(P) gsmld_receive: 00000000: f9 03 1f 01 36 f9 <-- 0) C: DM(P) ... $ minicom -D /dev/gsmtty1 minicom: cannot open /dev/gsmtty1: No error information $ strace minicom -D /dev/gsmtty1 ... open("/dev/gsmtty1", O_RDWR|O_NOCTTY|O_NONBLOCK|O_LARGEFILE) = -1 EL2HLT Note that this is different issue from other n_gsm -EL2HLT issues such as timeouts when the control dlci does not respond at all. The ADM mode seems to be a quite common according to "RF Wireless World" article "GSM Issue-UE sends SABM and gets a DM response instead of UA response": This issue is most commonly observed in GSM networks where in UE sends SABM and expects network to send UA response but it ends up receiving DM response from the network. SABM stands for Set asynchronous balanced mode, UA stands for Unnumbered Acknowledge and DA stands for Disconnected Mode. An RLP entity can be in one of two modes: - Asynchronous Balanced Mode (ABM) - Asynchronous Disconnected Mode (ADM) Currently Linux kernel closes the control dlci after several retries in gsm_dlci_t1() on DM. This causes n_gsm /dev/gsmtty ports to produce error code -EL2HLT when trying to open them as the closing of control dlci has already set gsm->dead. Let's fix the issue by allowing control dlci stay in ADM mode after the retries so the /dev/gsmtty ports can be opened and used. It seems that it might take several attempts to get any response from the control dlci, so it's best to allow ADM mode only after the SABM retries are done. Note that for droid 4 additional patches are needed to mux the ttyS0 pins and to toggle RTS gpio_149 to wake up the mdm6600 modem are also needed to use n_gsm. And the mdm6600 modem needs to be powered on. [ Upstream commit 84b40e3b57eef1417479c00490dd4c9f6e5ffdbc ] Kernel always writes log messages to console via serial8250_console_write()->serial8250_console_putchar() which directly accesses UART_TX register _without_ using DMA. But, if other processes like systemd using same UART port, then these writes are handled by a different code flow using 8250_omap driver where there is provision to use DMA. It seems that it is possible that both DMA and CPU might simultaneously put data to UART FIFO and lead to potential loss of data due to FIFO overflow and weird data corruption. This happens when both kernel console and userspace tries to write simultaneously to the same UART port. Therefore, disable DMA on kernel console port to avoid potential race between CPU and DMA. 2018-04-08vt: change SGR 21 to follow the standardsMike Frysinger1-1/+5
commit 65d9982d7e523a1a8e7c9af012da0d166f72fc56 upstream. ECMA-48 [1] (aka ISO 6429) has defined SGR 21 as "doubly underlined" since at least March 1984. The Linux kernel has treated it as SGR 22 "normal intensity" since it was added in Linux-0.96b in June 1992. Before that, it was simply ignored. Other terminal emulators have either ignored it, or treat it as double underline now. xterm for example added support in its 304 release (May 2014) [2] where it was previously ignoring it. Changing this behavior shouldn't be an issue: - It isn't a named capability in ncurses's terminfo database, so no script is using libtinfo/libcurses to look this up, or using tput to query & output the right sequence. - Any script assuming SGR 21 will reset intensity in all terminals already do not work correctly on non-Linux VTs (including running under screen/tmux/etc...). - If someone has written a script that only runs in the Linux VT, and they're using SGR 21 (instead of SGR 22), the output should still be readable. imo it's important to change this as the Linux VT's non-conformance is sometimes used as an argument for other terminal emulators to not implement SGR 21 at all, or do so incorrectly. 2018-03-22serial: imx: setup DCEDTE early and ensure DCD and RI irqs to be offUwe Kleine-König1-13/+23
[ Upstream commit e61c38d85b7392e033ee03bca46f1d6006156175 ] If the UART is operated in DTE mode and UCR3_DCD or UCR3_RI are 1 (which is the reset default) and the opposite side pulls the respective line to its active level the irq triggers after it is requested in .probe. These irqs were already disabled in .startup but this might be too late. Also setup of the UFCR_DCEDTE bit (currently done in .set_termios) is done very late which is critical as it also controls direction of some pins. So setup UFCR_DCEDTE earlier (in .probe) and also disable the broken irqs in DTE mode there before requesting irqs. 2018-03-22tty: amba-pl011: Fix spurious TX interruptsJayachandran C1-9/+14
[ Upstream commit 7d05587c9e0e4611650bb403812e2d492c178a9f ] On SMP systems, we see a lot of spurious TX interrupts when a program generates a steady stream of output to the pl011 UART. The problem can be easily seen when one CPU generates the output while another CPU handles the pl011 interrupts, and the rate of output is low enough not to fill the TX FIFO. The problem seems to be: -- CPU a -- -- CPU b -- (take port lock) pl011_start_tx pl011_start_tx_pio enable TXIM in REG_IMSC -> causes uart tx intr (pl011_int) pl011_tx_chars pl011_int ...tx chars, all done... (wait for port lock) pl011_stop_tx . disable TXIM . (release port lock) -> (take port lock) check for TXIM, not enabled (release port lock) return IRQ_NONE Enabling the TXIM in pl011_start_tx_pio() causes the interrupt to be generated and delivered to CPU b, even though pl011_tx_chars() is able to complete the TX and then disable the tx interrupt. Fix this by enabling TXIM only after pl011_tx_chars, if it is needed. pl011_tx_chars will return a boolean indicating whether the TX interrupts have to be enabled.
