We first tried to avoid updating atime/mtime entirely (commit
b0de59b5733d: "TTY: do not update atime/mtime on read/write"), and then
limited it to only update it occasionally (commit 37b7f3c76595: "TTY:
fix atime/mtime regression"), but it turns out that this was both
insufficient and overkill.
It was insufficient because we let people attach to the shared ptmx node
to see activity without even reading atime/mtime, and it was overkill
because the "only once a minute" means that you can't really tell an
idle person from an active one with 'w'.
So this tries to fix the problem properly. It marks the shared ptmx
node as un-notifiable, and it lowers the "only once a minute" to a few
seconds instead - still long enough that you can't time individual
keystrokes, but short enough that you can tell whether somebody is
active or not.

The serial core uses device_find_child() but does not drop the reference to
the retrieved child after using it. This patch add the missing put_device().
What I have done to test this issue.
I used a machine with an AMBA PL011 serial driver. I tested the patch on
next-20120408 because the last branch [next-20120415] does not boot on this
board.
For test purpose, I added some pr_info() messages to print the refcount
after device_find_child() (lines: 1937,2009), and after put_device()
(lines: 1947, 2021).
Boot the machine *without* put_device(). Then:

In commit b0de59b5733d ("TTY: do not update atime/mtime on read/write")
we removed timestamps from tty inodes to fix a security issue and waited
if something breaks. Well, 'w', the utility to find out logged users
and their inactivity time broke. It shows that users are inactive since
the time they logged in.
To revert to the old behaviour while still preventing attackers to
guess the password length, we update the timestamps in one-minute
intervals by this patch.

On http://vladz.devzero.fr/013_ptmx-timing.php, we can see how to find
out length of a password using timestamps of /dev/ptmx. It is
documented in "Timing Analysis of Keystrokes and Timing Attacks on
SSH". To avoid that problem, do not update time when reading
from/writing to a TTY.
I am afraid of regressions as this is a behavior we have since 0.97
and apps may expect the time to be current, e.g. for monitoring
whether there was a change on the TTY. Now, there is no change. So
this would better have a lot of testing before it goes upstream.

Since commit 89c8d91e31f2 ("tty: localise the lock") I see a dead lock
in one of my dummy_hcd + g_nokia test cases. The first run was usually
okay, the second often resulted in a splat by lockdep and the third was
usually a dead lock.
Lockdep complained about tty->hangup_work and tty->legacy_mutex taken
both ways:

As it can be seen, it first flushes the workqueue and then grabs the
tty_lock. Now we grab the lock first:

so lockdep's complaint seems valid.
The earlier version of this patch took the ldisc_mutex since the other
user of tty_ldisc_flush_works() (tty_set_ldisc()) did this.
Peter Hurley then said that it is should not be requried. Since it
wasn't done earlier, I dropped this part.
The code under tty_ldisc_kill() was executed earlier with the tty lock
taken so it is taken again.
I was able to reproduce the deadlock on v3.8-rc1, this patch fixes the
problem in my testcase. I didn't notice any problems so far.

I've managed to find an 8 port version of the card 4 port card which was discussed here:

Looking back at that thread there were two issues in the original patch.
1) The I/O ports for the UARTs are within BAR2 not BAR0. This can been seen in the original post.
2) A serial quirk isn't needed as these cards have no memory in BAR0 which makes pci_plx9050_init just return.
This patch fixes the 4 port support to use BAR2, removes the bogus quirk and adds support for the 8 port card.

Now that login from util-linux is forced to drop all references to a
TTY which it wants to hangup (to reach reference count 1) we are
seeing issues with telnet. When login closes its last reference to the
slave PTY, it also resets packet mode on the *master* side. And we
have a race here.
What telnet does is fork+exec of `login'. Then there are two
scenarios:
* `login' closes the slave TTY and resets thus master's packet mode,
but even now telnet properly sets the mode, or
* `telnetd' sets packet mode on the master, `login' closes the slave
TTY and resets master's packet mode.
The former case is OK. However the latter happens in much more cases,
by the order of magnitude to be precise. So when one tries to login to
such a messed telnet setup, they see the following:
inux login:
ogin incorrect
Note the missing first letters -- telnet thinks it is still in the
packet mode, so when it receives "linux login" from `login', it
considers "l" as the type of the packet and strips it.
SuS does not mention how the implementation should behave. Both BSDs I
checked (Free and Net) do not reset the flag upon the last close.
By this I am resurrecting an old bug, see References. We are hitting
it regularly now, i.e. with updated util-linux, ergo login.
Here, I am changing a behavior introduced back in 2.1 times. It would
better have a long time testing before goes upstream.

We added a warning to flush_to_ldisc to report cases when it is called
with a NULL tty. It was for debugging purposes and it lead to a
patchset from Peter Hurley. The patchset however did not make it to
3.9, so disable the warning now to not disturb people.
We can re-add it when the series is in and we are hunting for another
bugs.

The Kconfig symbol SERIAL_S3C2412 got removed in commit
da121506eb03ee5daea55404709110b798bd61d9 ("serial: samsung: merge
probe() function from all SoC specific extensions"). But it also added a
last reference to that symbol. The commit and the tree make clear that
CPU_S3C2412 should have been used instead.

With commit 835d844d1 (8250_pnp: do pnp probe before legacy probe), the
8250 driver was renamed to 8250_core. This means any existing usage of
the 8259.<xxxx> module parameters or as a kernel command line switch is
now broken, as the 8250_core driver doesn't parse options belonging to
something called "8250".
To solve this, we redefine the module options in a dummy function using
a redefined MODULE_PARAM_PREFX when built into the kernel. In the case
where we're building as a module, we provide an alias to the old 8250
name. The dummy function prevents compiler errors due to global variable
redefinitions that happen as part of the module_param_ macro expansions.

The InsydeH2O BIOS (version dated 09/12/2011) has the following in
its pnp resouces for its serial ports:

We do not check if the resources are disabled, and create a bogus
ttyS* device. Since commit 835d844d1a28e (8250_pnp: do pnp probe
before legacy probe) we get a bogus ttyS0, which prevents the legacy
probe from detecting it.
Note, the BIOS can also be upgraded, fixing this problem, but for people
who can't do that, this fix is needed.

I've still got lockdep warnings even after Alan's patch, and it seems that
yet more band aids are required to paper over similar paths for
unbind_con_driver() and unregister_con_driver(). After this hack, lockdep
warnings are finally gone.

Adjust the console layer to allow a take over call where the caller
already holds the locks. Make the fb layer lock in order.
This is partly a band aid, the fb layer is terminally confused about the
locking rules it uses for its notifiers it seems.

When we switch from 256->512 byte font rendering mode, it means the
current contents of the screen is being reinterpreted. The bit that holds
the high bit of the 9-bit font, may have been previously set, and thus
the new font misrenders.
The problem case we see is grub2 writes spaces with the bit set, so it
ends up with data like 0x820, which gets reinterpreted into 0x120 char
which the font translates into G with a circumflex. This flashes up on
screen at boot and is quite ugly.
A current side effect of this patch though is that any rendering on the
screen changes color to a slightly darker color, but at least the screen
no longer corrupts.
v2: as suggested by hpa, always clear the attribute space, whether we
are are going to or from 512 chars.

Commit 81732c3b2fed ("tty vt: Fix line garbage in virtual console on
command line edition") broke insert_char() in multiple ways. Then
commit b1a925f44a3a ("tty vt: Fix a regression in command line edition")
partially fixed it. However, the buffer being moved is still too large
and overflowing beyond the end of the current line, corrupting existing
characters on the next line.
Example test case:

e
Needless to say that this is very annoying when inserting words in the
middle of paragraphs with certain text editors.

commit 9ec1882df2 (tty: serial: imx: console write routing is unsafe
on SMP) introduced a recursive locking bug in imx_console_write().
The callchain is:
imx_rxint()

sysrq_function();
printk();
imx_console_write();
spin_lock_irqsave(&sport->port.lock,flags); <--- DEAD
The bad news is that the kernel debugging facilities can dectect the
problem, but the printks never surface on the serial console for
obvious reasons.
There is a similar issue with oops_in_progress. If the kernel crashes
we really don't want to be stuck on the lock and unable to tell what
happened.
In general most UP originated drivers miss these checks and nobody
ever notices because CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING seems to be still ignored by
a large number of developers.
The solution is to avoid locking in the sysrq case and trylock in the
oops_in_progress case.
This scheme is used in other drivers as well and it would be nice if
we could move this to a common place, so the usual copy/paste/modify
bugs can be avoided.
Now there is another issue with this scheme:

avoid locking
port->sysrq is reset with the next receive character. So as long as
the port->sysrq is not reset and this can take an endless amount of
time if after the break no futher receive character follows, all
console writes happen unlocked.
While the current writer is protected against other console writers by
the console sem, it's unprotected against open/close or other
operations which fiddle with the port. That's what the above mentioned
commit tried to solve.
That's an issue in all drivers which use that scheme and unfortunately
there is no easy workaround. The only solution is to have a separate
indicator port->sysrq_cpu. uart_handle_sysrq_char() then sets it to
smp_processor_id() before calling into handle_sysrq() and resets it to
-1 after that. Then change the locking check to:

That would force all other cpus into the spin_lock path. Problem
solved, but that's way beyond the scope of this fix and really wants
to be implemented in a common function which calls the uart specific
write function to avoid another gazillion of hard to debug
copy/paste/modify bugs.

This change fixes a deadlock when the multiplexer is closed while there
are still client side ports open.
When the multiplexer is closed and there are active tty's it tries to
close them with tty_vhangup. This has a problem though, because
tty_vhangup needs the tty_lock. This patch changes it to unlock the
tty_lock before attempting the hangup and relocks afterwards. The
additional call to tty_port_tty_set is needed because otherwise the
port stays active because of the reference counter.
This change also exposed another problem that other code paths don't
expect that the multiplexer could have been closed. This patch also adds
checks for these cases in the gsmtty_ class of function that could be
called.
The documentation explicitly states that "first close all virtual ports
before closing the physical port" but we've found this to not always
reality in our field situations. The GPRS / UTMS modem sometimes crashes
and needs a power cycle in that case which means cleanly shutting down
everything is not always possible. This change makes it much more robust
for our situation where at least the system is recoverable with this patch
and doesn't hang in a deadlock situation inside the kernel.
The patch is against the long term support kernel (3.4.27) and should
apply cleanly to more recent branches. Tested with a Telit GE864-QUADV2
and Telit HE910 modem.

Add support for the UART device present in Broadcom TruManage capable
NetXtreme chips (ie: 5761m 5762, and 5725).
This implementation has a hidden transmit FIFO, so running in single-byte
interrupt mode results in too many interrupts. The UART_CAP_HFIFO
capability was added to track this. It continues to reload the THR as long
as the THRE and TSRE bits are set in the LSR up to a specified limit (1024
is used here).

Commit bbb63c514a3464342967237a51a21ea8f61ab951 (drivers:tty:fix up
ENOIOCTLCMD error handling) changed the default return value from tty
ioctl to be ENOTTY and not EINVAL. This is appropriate.
But in case of TIOCGPTN for the old BSD ptys glibc started failing
because it expects EINVAL to be returned. Only then it continues to
obtain the pts name the other way around.
So fix this case by explicit return of EINVAL in this case.

As protocol driver, IFX SPI driver initiate to setup SPI master with default
SPI word size as 16 bit/word, however, SPI master may not adopt this default
value due to SPI controller's capability, it might choose an available value by
itself and set it to spi_device.bits_per_word. In order to keep align with
Controller, IFX driver should make use of this value during SPI transfer,
but the default one.

With the patch "serial: mxs-auart: fix the wrong RTS hardware flow control" the
mainline mxs-uart driver now sets RTSEN only when hardware flow control is
enabled via software. It is not possible any longer to set RTS manually via
software. However, the manual modification is a valid operation.
Regain the possibility to set RTS via software and only set RTSEN when hardware
flow control is explicitly enabled via settermios cflag CRTSCTS.

Pull ARM SoC updates from Olof Johansson:

Two new platforms have been added, the sunxi platforms (Allwinner A1x
SoCs) by Maxime Ripard, and a generic Broadcom platform for a new

directory. The new Broadcom platform is contributed by Christian
Daudt.

various bugs in the hardware-assisted flow control, extending up into
serial_core for a couple of issues. These fixes have been done as a
set of progressive changes and transformations in the hope that no new
bugs will be introduced by this series.

updated settings, to the driver not knowing what the intentions of the
upper layers are.
The first four patches tackle the serial_core layer, allowing it to
provide the necessary information to drivers, and the remaining

This brings hardware assisted RTS/CTS and XON/OFF flow control into a
useful state.

Fixed up some trivial conflicts in the staging tree, due to the fwserial
driver having come in both ways (but fixed up a bit in the serial tree),
and the ioctl handling in the dgrp driver having been done slightly
differently (staging tree got that one right, and removed both
TIOCGSOFTCAR and TIOCSSOFTCAR).

Pull pinctrl changes from Linus Walleij:
"These are the first and major pinctrl changes for the v3.8 merge
cycle. Some of this is used as merge base for other trees so I better
be early on the trigger.
As can be seen from the diffstat the major changes are:
- A big conversion of the AT91 pinctrl driver and the associated ACKed
platform changes under arch/arm/max-at91 and its device trees. This
has been coordinated with the AT91 maintainers to go in through the
pinctrl tree.
- A larger chunk of changes to the SPEAr drivers and the addition of
the "plgpio" driver for the SPEAr as well.
- The removal of the remnants of the Nomadik driver from the arch/arm
tree and fusion of that into the Nomadik driver and platform data
header files.
- Some local movement in the Marvell MVEBU drivers, these now have
their own subdirectory.
- The addition of a chunk of code to gpiolib under drivers/gpio to
register gpio-to-pin range mappings from the GPIO side of things.
This has been requested by Grant Likely and is now implemented, it
is particularly useful for device tree work.
Then we have incremental updates all over the place, many of these are
cleanups and fixes from Axel Lin who has done a great job of removing
minor mistakes and compilation annoyances."

serial_core.c usually does
if (HIGH_BITS_OFFSET)
expr-involving-HIGH_BITS_OFFSET()
at least to avoid generating useless code on 32-bit machines, where
HIGH_BITS_OFFSET is zero. Do that in uart_get_attr_port().

reboot callback to the reboot_notifier_list. Also realizing the spi shutdown function.
