Commit fc96ec826bce ("spi: fsl-cpm: Use 16 bit mode for large transfers with even size") failed to make sure that the size is really even before switching to 16 bit mode. Until recently the problem went unnoticed because kernfs uses a pre-allocated bounce buffer of size PAGE_SIZE for reading EEPROM. But commit 8ad6249c51d0 ("eeprom: at25: convert to spi-mem API") introduced an additional dynamically allocated bounce buffer whose size is exactly the size of the transfer, leading to a buffer overrun in the fsl-cpm driver when that size is odd. Add the missing length parity verification and remain in 8 bit mode when the length is not even. Use pm_runtime_get_sync() to increment the usage counter and resume the device. This prevents runtime_suspend() from being invoked and causing a double clock disable. [ Upstream commit b4e002d8a7cee3b1d70efad0e222567f92a73000 ] When the CPU that the QSPI interrupt handler runs on (typically CPU 0) is excessively busy, it can lead to rare cases of the IRQ thread not running before the transfer timeout is reached. While handling the timeouts, any pending transfers are cleaned up and the message that they correspond to is marked as failed, which leaves the curr_xfer field pointing at stale memory. To avoid this, clear curr_xfer to NULL upon timeout and check for this condition when the IRQ thread is finally run. While at it, also make sure to clear interrupts on failure so that new interrupts can be run. A better, more involved, fix would move the interrupt clearing into a hard IRQ handler. Ideally we would also want to signal that the IRQ thread no longer needs to be run after the timeout is hit to avoid the extra check for a valid transfer. For instance, microblaze running at 83.25MHz and performing a 3 bytes transaction using a 10MHz/16 = 625kHz needed this stall value increased to at least 20. The SPI device is quite slow, but also is the microblaze, so set this value to 32 to give it even more margin. 2025-12-07spi: bcm63xx: fix premature CS deassertion on RX-only transactionsHang Zhou1-0/+14
[ Upstream commit fd9862f726aedbc2f29a29916cabed7bcf5cadb6 ] On BCM6358 (and also observed on BCM6368) the controller appears to only generate as many SPI clocks as bytes that have been written into the TX FIFO. For RX-only transfers the driver programs the transfer length in SPI_MSG_CTL but does not write anything into the FIFO, so chip select is deasserted early and the RX transfer segment is never fully clocked in. A concrete failing case is a three-transfer MAC address read from SPI-NOR: - TX 0x03 (read command) - TX 3-byte address - RX 6 bytes (MAC) In contrast, a two-transfer JEDEC-ID read (0x9f + 6-byte RX) works because the driver uses prepend_len and writes dummy bytes into the TX FIFO for the RX part. Fix this by writing 0xff dummy bytes into the TX FIFO for RX-only segments so that the number of bytes written to the FIFO matches the total message length seen by the controller. Since we can now have per-operation constraints, let's use the value that comes from the spi-mem operation structure instead. In case there is no specific limitation for this operation, the default spi device value will be given anyway. The per-operation frequency capability is thus advertised to the spi-mem core. [ Upstream commit 1248c9b8d54120950fda10fbeb98fb8932b4d45c ] There are spi devices with multiple frequency limitations depending on the invoked command. We probably do not want to afford running at the lowest supported frequency all the time, so if we want to get the most of our hardware, we need to allow per-operation frequency limitations. Among all the SPI memory controllers, I believe all are capable of changing the spi frequency on the fly. Some of the drivers do not make any frequency setup though. And some others will derive a per chip prescaler value which will be used forever. Actually changing the frequency on the fly is something new in Linux, so we need to carefully flag the drivers which do and do not support it. A controller capability is created for that, and the presence for this capability will always be checked before accepting such pattern. 2025-12-07spi: spi-mem: Extend spi-mem operations with a per-operation maximum frequencyMiquel Raynal1-0/+28
[ Upstream commit 0fefeade90e74bc8f40ab0e460f483565c492e28 ] In the spi subsystem, the bus frequency is derived as follows: - the controller may expose a minimum and maximum operating frequency - the hardware description, through the spi peripheral properties, advise what is the maximum acceptable frequency from a device/wiring point of view. Transfers must be observed at a frequency which fits both (so in practice, the lowest maximum). Actually, this second point mixes two information and already takes the lowest frequency among: - what the spi device is capable of (what is written in the component datasheet) - what the wiring allows (electromagnetic sensibility, crossovers, terminations, antenna effect, etc). This logic works until spi devices are no longer capable of sustaining their highest frequency regardless of the operation. Spi memories are typically subject to such variation. Some devices are capable of spitting their internally stored data (essentially in read mode) at a very fast rate, typically up to 166MHz on Winbond SPI-NAND chips, using "fast" commands. However, some of the low-end operations, such as regular page read-from-cache commands, are more limited and can only be executed at 54MHz at most. This is currently a problem in the SPI-NAND subsystem. Another situation, even if not yet supported, will be with DTR commands, when the data is latched on both edges of the clock. The same chips as mentioned previously are in this case limited to 80MHz. Yet another example might be continuous reads, which, under certain circumstances, can also run at most at 104 or 120MHz. As a matter of fact, the "one frequency per chip" policy is outdated and more fine grain configuration is needed: we need to allow per-operation frequency limitations. So far, all datasheets I encountered advertise a maximum default frequency, which need to be lowered for certain specific operations. So based on the current infrastructure, we can still expect firmware (device trees in general) to continued advertising the same maximum speed which is a mix between the PCB limitations and the chip maximum capability, and expect per-operation lower frequencies when this is relevant. Add a `struct spi_mem_op` member to carry this information. Not providing this field explicitly from upper layers means that there is no further constraint and the default spi device maximum speed will be carried instead. The SPI_MEM_OP() macro is also expanded with an optional frequency argument, because virtually all operations can be subject to such a limitation, and this will allow for a smooth and discrete transition. For controller drivers which do not implement the spi-mem interface, the per-transfer speed is also set acordingly to a lower (than the maximum default) speed when relevant. 2025-12-07spi: spi-mem: Allow specifying the byte order in Octal DTR modeTudor Ambarus1-0/+3
[ Upstream commit 030ace430afcf847f537227afceb22dfe8fb8fc8 ] There are NOR flashes (Macronix) that swap the bytes on a 16-bit boundary when configured in Octal DTR mode. The byte order of 16-bit words is swapped when read or written in Octal Double Transfer Rate (DTR) mode compared to Single Transfer Rate (STR) modes. If one writes D0 D1 D2 D3 bytes using 1-1-1 mode, and uses 8D-8D-8D SPI mode for reading, it will read back D1 D0 D3 D2. Swapping the bytes may introduce some endianness problems. It can affect the boot sequence if the entire boot sequence is not handled in either 8D-8D-8D mode or 1-1-1 mode. Therefore, it is necessary to swap the bytes back to ensure the same byte order as in STR modes. Fortunately there are controllers that could swap the bytes back at runtime, addressing the flash's endianness requirements. Provide a way for the upper layers to specify the byte order in Octal DTR mode. Merge Tudor's patch and add modifications for suiting newer version of Linux kernel. Since commit d24cfee7f63d ("spi: Fix acpi deferred irq probe"), the acpi_dev_gpio_irq_get() call gets delayed till spi_probe() is called on the SPI device. If there is no driver for the SPI device then the move to spi_probe() results in acpi_dev_gpio_irq_get() never getting called. This may cause problems by leaving the GPIO pin floating because this call is responsible for setting up the GPIO pin direction and/or bias according to the values from the ACPI tables. Re-add the removed acpi_dev_gpio_irq_get() in acpi_register_spi_device() to ensure the GPIO pin is always correctly setup, while keeping the acpi_dev_gpio_irq_get() call added to spi_probe() to deal with -EPROBE_DEFER returns caused by the GPIO controller not having a driver yet. [ Upstream commit b832b19318534bb4f1673b24d78037fee339c679 ] In the past %pK was preferable to %p as it would not leak raw pointer values into the kernel log. Since commit ad67b74d2469 ("printk: hash addresses printed with %p") the regular %p has been improved to avoid this issue. Furthermore, restricted pointers ("%pK") were never meant to be used through printk(). They can still unintentionally leak raw pointers or acquire sleeping locks in atomic contexts. Switch to the regular pointer formatting which is safer and easier to reason about. There are still a few users of %pK left, but these use it through seq_file, for which its usage is safe. commit 1ad55767e77a853c98752ed1e33b68049a243bd7 upstream. cqspi_read_setup() and cqspi_write_setup() program the address width as the last step in the setup. This is likely to be immediately followed by a DAC region read/write. On TI K3 SoCs the DAC region is on a different endpoint from the register region. This means that the order of the two operations is not guaranteed, and they might be reordered at the interconnect level. It is possible that the DAC read/write goes through before the address width update goes through. In this situation if the previous command used a different address width the OSPI command is sent with the wrong number of address bytes, resulting in an invalid command and undefined behavior. Read back the size register to make sure the write gets flushed before accessing the DAC region. commit 29e0b471ccbd674d20d4bbddea1a51e7105212c5 upstream. cqspi_indirect_read_execute() and cqspi_indirect_write_execute() first set the enable bit on APB region and then start reading/writing to the AHB region. On TI K3 SoCs these regions lie on different endpoints. This means that the order of the two operations is not guaranteed, and they might be reordered at the interconnect level. It is possible for the AHB write to be executed before the APB write to enable the indirect controller, causing the transaction to be invalid and the write erroring out. Read back the APB region write before accessing the AHB region to make sure the write got flushed and the race condition is eliminated. Commit 40369bfe717e ("spi: fsl-qspi: use devm function instead of driver remove") introduced managed cleanup via fsl_qspi_cleanup(), but incorrectly retain manual cleanup in two scenarios: - On devm_add_action_or_reset() failure, the function automatically call fsl_qspi_cleanup(). However, the current code still jumps to err_destroy_mutex, repeating cleanup. - After the fsl_qspi_cleanup() action is added successfully, there is no need to manually perform the cleanup in the subsequent error path. However, the current code still jumps to err_destroy_mutex on spi controller failure, repeating cleanup. Skip redundant manual cleanup calls to fix these issues. [ Upstream commit dedf9c93dece441e9a0a4836458bc93677008ddd ] Clear the error flags after disabling the module to avoid the case when a flag is set again between flag clear and module disable. And use SR_CLEAR_MASK to replace hardcoded value for improved readability. Although fsl_lpspi_reset() was only introduced in commit a15dc3d657fa ("spi: lpspi: Fix CLK pin becomes low before one transfer"), the original driver only reset SR in the interrupt handler, making it vulnerable to the same issue. Therefore the fixes commit is set at the introduction of the driver. The TDIE interrupt should not be disabled in all cases. If CONT is used and the TX transfer is not yet completed yet, but the interrupt handler is called because there are characters to be received, TDIE is replaced with FCIE. When the transfer is finally completed, SR_TDF is set but the interrupt handler isn't called again. If 'cfg' is NULL, an error message is logged. [ Upstream commit fa60c094c19b97e103d653f528f8d9c178b6a5f5 ] In target mode, extra interrupts can be received between the end of a transfer and halting the module if the host continues sending more data. If the interrupt from this occurs after the reinit_completion() then the completion counter is left at a non-zero value. The next unrelated transfer initiated by userspace will then complete immediately without waiting for the interrupt or writing to the RX buffer. Fix it by resetting the counter before the transfer so that lingering values are cleared. This is done after clearing the FIFOs and the status register but before the transfer is initiated, so no interrupts should be received at this point resulting in other race conditions. [ Upstream commit 0941d5166629cb766000530945e54b4e49680c68 ] The maximum amount of data to transfer in a single DMA request is calculated from the FIFO sizes (which is technically not 100% correct, but a simplification, as it is limited by the maximum word count values in the Transmit and Control Data Registers). However, in case there is both data to transmit and to receive, the transmit limit is overwritten by the receive limit. Fix this by using the minimum applicable FIFO size instead. Move the calculation outside the loop, so it is not repeated for each individual DMA transfer. As currently tx_fifo_size is always equal to rx_fifo_size, this bug had no real impact. [ Upstream commit dcb06c638a1174008a985849fa30fc0da7d08904 ] This patch corrects the QSPI_COMMAND_X1_X2_X4 and QSPI_ADDRESS_X1_X2_X4 macros to properly encode the bus width for x1, x2, and x4 transfers. Although these macros were previously incorrect, they were not being used in the driver, so no functionality was affected. The patch updates tegra_qspi_cmd_config() and tegra_qspi_addr_config() function calls to use the actual bus width from the transfer, instead of hardcoding it to 0 (which implied x1 mode). This change enables proper support for x1, x2, and x4 data transfers by correctly configuring the interface width for commands and addresses. These modifications improve the QSPI driver's flexibility and prepare it for future use cases that may require different bus widths for commands and addresses. [ Upstream commit fb98bd0a13de2c9d96cb5c00c81b5ca118ac9d71 ] The SPI interface is activated before the CPOL setting is applied. In that moment, the clock idles high and CS goes low. After a short delay, CPOL and other settings are applied, which may cause the clock to change state and idle low. This transition is not part of a clock cycle, and it can confuse the receiving device. To prevent this unexpected transition, activate the interface while CPOL and the other settings are being applied. [ Upstream commit 7aba292eb15389073c7f3bd7847e3862dfdf604d ] If, in a previous transfer, the controller sends more data than expected by the DSPI target, SR.RFDF (RX FIFO is not empty) will remain asserted. When flushing the FIFOs at the beginning of a new transfer (writing 1 into MCR.CLR_TXF and MCR.CLR_RXF), SR.RFDF should also be cleared. Otherwise, when running in target mode with DMA, if SR.RFDF remains asserted, the DMA callback will be fired before the controller sends any data. Take this opportunity to reset all Status Register fields. [ Upstream commit 8a30a6d35a11ff5ccdede7d6740765685385a917 ] The XSPI mode implementation in this driver still uses the EOQ flag to signal the last word in a transmission and deassert the PCS signal. However, at speeds lower than ~200kHZ, the PCS signal seems to remain asserted even when SR[EOQF] = 1 indicates the end of a transmission. This is a problem for target devices which require the deassertation of the PCS signal between transfers. Hence, this commit 'forces' the deassertation of the PCS by stopping the module through MCR[HALT] after completing a new transfer. According to the reference manual, the module stops or transitions from the Running state to the Stopped state after the current frame, when any one of the following conditions exist: - The value of SR[EOQF] = 1. - The chip is in Debug mode and the value of MCR[FRZ] = 1. - The value of MCR[HALT] = 1. This shouldn't be done if the last transfer in the message has cs_change set. Larger buffers are truncated: only the first 512 and the last 512 bytes are printed, separated by a truncation message. The latter is confusing in case the buffer holds exactly 1024 bytes, as all data is printed anyway. Fix this by printing buffers holding up to and including 1024 bytes in full. This patch makes two improvements: 1. Replace dev_err() with dev_err_ratelimited() to prevent log flooding when hardware errors persist 2. Remove the redundant timeout value parameter from the error message, as 'ret' is always zero in this error path These changes reduce logging overhead while maintaining necessary error reporting for debugging purposes.
