2019-05-06*: convert stream-like files from nonseekable_open -> stream_openKirill Smelkov1-1/+1
Using scripts/coccinelle/api/stream_open.cocci added in 10dce8af3422 ("fs: stream_open - opener for stream-like files so that read and write can run simultaneously without deadlock"), search and convert to stream_open all in-kernel nonseekable_open users for which read and write actually do not depend on ppos and where there is no other methods in file_operations which assume @offset access. I've verified each generated change manually - that it is correct to convert - and each other nonseekable_open instance left - that it is either not correct to convert there, or that it is not converted due to current stream_open.cocci limitations. The script also does not convert files that should be valid to convert, but that currently have .llseek = noop_llseek or generic_file_llseek for unknown reason despite file being opened with nonseekable_open (e.g. drivers/input/mousedev.c) Among cases converted 14 were potentially vulnerable to read vs write deadlock (see details in 10dce8af3422): drivers/char/pcmcia/cm4000_cs.c:1685:7-23: ERROR: cm4000_fops: .read() can deadlock .write(); One can also recheck/review the patch via generating it with explanation comments included via $ make coccicheck MODE=patch COCCI=scripts/coccinelle/api/stream_open.cocci SPFLAGS="-D explain" (*) This second group also contains cases with read/write deadlocks that stream_open.cocci don't yet detect, but which are still valid to convert to stream_open since ppos is not used. For example drivers/pci/switch/switchtec.c calls wait_for_completion_interruptible() in its .read, but stream_open.cocci currently detects only "wait_event*" as blocking. 2018-04-19compat: Move compat_timespec/ timeval to compat_time.hDeepa Dinamani1-1/+0
All the current architecture specific defines for these are the same. Refactor these common defines to a common header file. The new common linux/compat_time.h is also useful as it will eventually be used to hold all the defines that are needed for compat time types that support non y2038 safe types. New architectures need not have to define these new types as they will only use new y2038 safe syscalls. This file can be deleted after y2038 when we stop supporting non y2038 safe syscalls. The patch also requires an operation similar to: git grep "asm/compat\.h" | cut -d ":" -f 1 | xargs -n 1 sed -i -e "s%asm/compat.h%linux/compat.h%g" Cc: acme@kernel.org Cc: benh@kernel.crashing.org Cc: borntraeger@de.ibm.com Cc: catalin.marinas@arm.com Cc: cmetcalf@mellanox.com Cc: cohuck@redhat.com Cc: davem@davemloft.net Cc: deller@gmx.de Cc: devel@driverdev.osuosl.org Cc: gerald.schaefer@de.ibm.com Cc: gregkh@linuxfoundation.org Cc: heiko.carstens@de.ibm.com Cc: hoeppner@linux.vnet.ibm.com Cc: hpa@zytor.com Cc: jejb@parisc-linux.org Cc: jwi@linux.vnet.ibm.com Cc: linux-kernel@vger.kernel.org Cc: linux-mips@linux-mips.org Cc: linux-parisc@vger.kernel.org Cc: linuxppc-dev@lists.ozlabs.org Cc: linux-s390@vger.kernel.org Cc: mark.rutland@arm.com Cc: mingo@redhat.com Cc: mpe@ellerman.id.au Cc: oberpar@linux.vnet.ibm.com Cc: oprofile-list@lists.sf.net Cc: paulus@samba.org Cc: peterz@infradead.org Cc: ralf@linux-mips.org Cc: rostedt@goodmis.org Cc: rric@kernel.org Cc: schwidefsky@de.ibm.com Cc: sebott@linux.vnet.ibm.com Cc: sparclinux@vger.kernel.org Cc: sth@linux.vnet.ibm.com Cc: ubraun@linux.vnet.ibm.com Cc: will.deacon@arm.com Cc: x86@kernel.org Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Signed-off-by: Deepa Dinamani <deepa.kernel@gmail.com> Acked-by: Steven Rostedt (VMware) <rostedt@goodmis.org> Acked-by: Catalin Marinas <catalin.marinas@arm.com> Acked-by: James Hogan <jhogan@kernel.org> Acked-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de>
2017-11-24s390: char: add SPDX identifiers to the remaining filesGreg Kroah-Hartman1-0/+1

Update the drivers/s390/char/ files with the correct SPDX license identifier based on the license text in the file itself. 2010-10-15llseek: automatically add .llseek fopArnd Bergmann1-0/+1
All file_operations should get a .llseek operation so we can make nonseekable_open the default for future file operations without a .llseek pointer. The three cases that we can automatically detect are no_llseek, seq_lseek and default_llseek. For cases where we can we can automatically prove that the file offset is always ignored, we use noop_llseek, which maintains the current behavior of not returning an error from a seek. New drivers should normally not use noop_llseek but instead use no_llseek and call nonseekable_open at open time. Existing drivers can be converted to do the same when the maintainer knows for certain that no user code relies on calling seek on the device file. The generated code is often incorrectly indented and right now contains comments that clarify for each added line why a specific variant was chosen. In the version that gets submitted upstream, the comments will be gone and I will manually fix the indentation, because there does not seem to be a way to do that using coccinelle. Some amount of new code is currently sitting in linux-next that should get the same modifications, which I will do at the end of the merge window. Many thanks to Julia Lawall for helping me learn to write a semantic patch that does all this. ===== begin semantic patch ===== // This adds an llseek= method to all file operations, // as a preparation for making no_llseek the default. // // The rules are // - use no_llseek explicitly if we do nonseekable_open // - use seq_lseek for sequential files // - use default_llseek if we know we access f_pos // - use noop_llseek if we know we don't access f_pos, // but we still want to allow users to call lseek // @ open1 exists @ identifier nested_open; @@ nested_open(...) { <+... nonseekable_open(...) ...+> } @ open exists@ identifier open_f; identifier i, f; identifier open1.nested_open; @@ int open_f(struct inode *i, struct file *f) { <+... 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo1-0/+1
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. The latter is in fact correct and now we can hand back referenced objects we can fix this up without problems around sleeping functions. 2008-10-13tty: Make get_current_tty use a krefAlan Cox1-1/+2
We now return a kref covered tty reference. That ensures the tty structure doesn't go away when you have a return from get_current_tty. This is not enough to protect you from most of the resources being freed behind your back - yet. 2007-02-12[PATCH] mark struct file_operations const 5Arjan van de Ven1-1/+1
Many struct file_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential dirty data. In addition it'll catch accidental writes at compile time to these shared resources. 2006-12-08[PATCH] tty: ->signal->tty lockingPeter Zijlstra1-4/+8
Fix the locking of signal->tty. Use ->sighand->siglock to protect ->signal->tty; this lock is already used by most other members of ->signal/->sighand. And unless we are 'current' or the tasklist_lock is held we need ->siglock to access ->signal anyway. (NOTE: sys_unshare() is broken wrt ->sighand locking rules) Note that tty_mutex is held over tty destruction, so while holding tty_mutex any tty pointer remains valid. Otherwise the lifetime of ttys are governed by their open file handles. This leaves some holes for tty access from signal->tty (or any other non file related tty access). It solves the tty SLAB scribbles we were seeing. (NOTE: the change from group_send_sig_info to __group_send_sig_info needs to be examined by someone familiar with the security framework, I think it is safe given the SEND_SIG_PRIV from other __group_send_sig_info invocations) [schwidefsky@de.ibm.com: 3270 fix] [akpm@osdl.org: various post-viro fixes] Signed-off-by: Peter Zijlstra <a.p.zijlstra@chello.nl> Acked-by: Alan Cox <alan@redhat.com> Cc: Oleg Nesterov <oleg@tv-sign.ru> Cc: Prarit Bhargava <prarit@redhat.com> Cc: Chris Wright <chrisw@sous-sol.org> Cc: Roland McGrath <roland@redhat.com> Cc: Stephen Smalley <sds@tycho.nsa.gov> Cc: James Morris <jmorris@namei.org> Cc: "David S. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
