Patch series "Add support for DAX vmemmap optimization for ppc64", v6.
This patch series implements changes required to support DAX vmemmap
optimization for ppc64. The vmemmap optimization is only enabled with
radix MMU translation and 1GB PUD mapping with 64K page size.
The patch series also splits the hugetlb vmemmap optimization as a
separate Kconfig variable so that architectures can enable DAX vmemmap
optimization without enabling hugetlb vmemmap optimization. This should
enable architectures like arm64 to enable DAX vmemmap optimization while
they can't enable hugetlb vmemmap optimization. More details of the same
are in patch "mm/vmemmap optimization: Split hugetlb and devdax vmemmap
optimization".
With 64K page size for 16384 pages added (1G) we save 14 pages
With 4K page size for 262144 pages added (1G) we save 4094 pages
With 4K page size for 512 pages added (2M) we save 6 pages
This patch (of 13):
Architectures like powerpc would like to enable transparent huge page pud
support only with radix translation. To support that add
has_transparent_pud_hugepage() helper that architectures can override.

On architectures that have different page size values used for kernel
direct mapping and userspace mappings, the user can end up creating zero-sized
namespaces as shown below
:/sys/bus/nd/devices/region1# cat align
0x1000000
/sys/bus/nd/devices/region1# echo 0x200000 > align
/sys/bus/nd/devices/region1/dax1.0# cat supported_alignments
65536 16777216
$ ndctl create-namespace -r region1 -m devdax -s 18M --align 64K

"map":"dev",
"size":0,

"daxregion":{
"id":1,
"size":0,
"align":65536
},
"align":65536
}
similarily for fsdax
$ ndctl create-namespace -r region1 -m fsdax -s 18M --align 64K
{
"dev":"namespace1.0",
"mode":"fsdax",
"map":"dev",
"size":0,
"uuid":"45538a6f-dec7-405d-b1da-2a4075e06232",
"sector_size":512,
"align":65536,
"blockdev":"pmem1"
}
In commit 9ffc1d19fc4a ("mm/memremap_pages: Introduce memremap_compat_align()")
memremap_compat_align was added to make sure the kernel always creates
namespaces with 16MB alignment. But the user can still override the
region alignment and no input validation is done in the region alignment
values to retain the flexibility user had before. However, the kernel
ensures that only part of the namespace that can be mapped via kernel
direct mapping page size is enabled. This is achieved by tracking the
unmapped part of the namespace in pfn_sb->end_trunc. The kernel also
ensures that the start address of the namespace is also aligned to the
kernel direct mapping page size.
Depending on the user request, the kernel implements userspace mapping
alignment by updating pfn device alignment attribute and this value is
used to adjust the start address for userspace mappings. This is tracked
in pfn_sb->dataoff. Hence the available size for userspace mapping is:
usermapping_size = size of the namespace - pfn_sb->end_trun - pfn_sb->dataoff
If the kernel finds the user mapping size zero then don't allow the
creation of namespace.
After fix:
$ ndctl create-namespace -f -r region1 -m devdax -s 18M --align 64K
libndctl: ndctl_dax_enable: dax1.1: failed to enable
Error: namespace1.2: failed to enable
failed to create namespace: No such device or address
And existing zero sized namespace will be marked disabled.

Commit 6e9f05dc66f9 ("libnvdimm/pfn_dev: increase MAX_STRUCT_PAGE_SIZE")
...updated MAX_STRUCT_PAGE_SIZE to account for sizeof(struct page)
potentially doubling in the case of CONFIG_KMSAN=y. Unfortunately this
doubles the amount of capacity stolen from user addressable capacity for
everyone, regardless of whether they are using the debug option. Revert
that change, mandate that MAX_STRUCT_PAGE_SIZE never exceed 64, but
allow for debug scenarios to proceed with creating debug sized page maps
with a compile option to support debug scenarios.
Note that this only applies to cases where the page map is permanent,
i.e. stored in a reservation of the pmem itself ("--map=dev" in "ndctl
create-namespace" terms). For the "--map=mem" case, since the allocation
is ephemeral for the lifespan of the namespace, there are no explicit
restriction. However, the implicit restriction, of having enough
available "System RAM" to store the page map for the typically large
pmem, still applies.

KMSAN adds extra metadata fields to struct page, so it does not fit into

This change leads to increased memory consumption of the nvdimm driver,

In response to an attempt to expand dev->lockdep_mutex for device_lock()
validation [1], Peter points out [2] that the lockdep API already has
the ability to assign a dedicated lock class per subsystem device-type.
Use lockdep_set_class() to override the default device_lock()
'__lockdep_no_validate__' class for each NVDIMM subsystem device-type. This
enables lockdep to detect deadlocks and recursive locking within the
device-driver core and the subsystem.

In preparation for CXL labels that move the uuid to a different offset
in the label, add nsl_{ref,get,validate}_uuid(). These helpers use the
proper uuid_t type. That type definition predated the libnvdimm
subsystem, so now is as a good a time as any to convert all the uuid
handling in the subsystem to uuid_t to match the helpers.
Note that the uuid fields in the label data and superblocks is not
replaced per Andy's expectation that uuid_t is a kernel internal type
not to appear in external ABI interfaces. So, in those case
{import,export}_uuid() is used to go between the 2 types.
Also note that this rework uncovered some unnecessary copies for label
comparisons, those are cleaned up with nsl_uuid_equal().
As for the whitespace changes, all new code is clang-format compliant.

The 'struct resource' in 'struct dev_pagemap' is only used for holding
resource span information. The other fields, 'name', 'flags', 'desc',
'parent', 'sibling', and 'child' are all unused wasted space.
This is in preparation for introducing a multi-range extension of
devm_memremap_pages().
The bulk of this change is unwinding all the places internal to libnvdimm
that used 'struct resource' unnecessarily, and replacing instances of
'struct dev_pagemap'.res with 'struct dev_pagemap'.range.
P2PDMA had a minor usage of the resource flags field, but only to report
failures with "%pR". That is replaced with an open coded print of the
range.

The EOPNOTSUPP return code from the pmem driver indicates that the
namespace has a configuration that may be valid, but the current kernel
does not support it. Expand this to all of the nd_pfn_validate() error

This prevents exposing the namespace to I/O when the infoblock needs to
be corrected, or the system needs to be put into a different

The "sub-section memory hotplug" facility allows memremap_pages() users
like libnvdimm to compensate for hardware platforms like x86 that have a
section size larger than their hardware memory mapping granularity. The
compensation that sub-section support affords is being tolerant of
physical memory resources shifting by units smaller (64MiB on x86) than
the memory-hotplug section size (128 MiB). Where the platform
physical-memory mapping granularity is limited by the number and
capability of address-decode-registers in the memory controller.
While the sub-section support allows memremap_pages() to operate on
sub-section (2MiB) granularity, the Power architecture may still
require 16MiB alignment on "!radix_enabled()" platforms.
In order for libnvdimm to be able to detect and manage this per-arch
limitation, introduce memremap_compat_align() as a common minimum
alignment across all driver-facing memory-mapping interfaces, and let
Power override it to 16MiB in the "!radix_enabled()" case.
The assumption / requirement for 16MiB to be a viable
memremap_compat_align() value is that Power does not have platforms
where its equivalent of address-decode-registers never hardware remaps a
persistent memory resource on smaller than 16MiB boundaries. Note that I
tried my best to not add a new Kconfig symbol, but header include
entanglements defeated the #ifndef memremap_compat_align design pattern
and the need to export it defeats the __weak design pattern for arch

The nvdimm core currently maps the full namespace to an ioremap range
while probing the namespace mode. This can result in probe failures on
architectures that have limited ioremap space.
For example, with a large btt namespace that consumes most of I/O remap
range, depending on the sequence of namespace initialization, the user
can find a pfn namespace initialization failure due to unavailable I/O
remap space which nvdimm core uses for temporary mapping.
nvdimm core can avoid this failure by only mapping the reserved info
block area to check for pfn superblock type and map the full namespace
resource only before using the namespace.
Given that personalities like BTT can be layered on top of any namespace
type create a generic form of devm_nsio_enable (devm_namespace_enable)
and use it inside the per-personality attach routines. Now
devm_namespace_enable() is always paired with disable unless the mapping
is going to be used for long term runtime access.

nvdimm core use nd_pfn_validate when looking for devdax or fsdax namespace. In this
case device resources are allocated against nd_namespace_io dev. In-order to
allow remap of range in nd_pfn_clear_memmap_error(), move the device memmap
area clearing while initializing pfn namespace. With this device
resource are allocated against nd_pfn and we can use nd_pfn->dev for remapping.
This also avoids calling nd_pfn_clear_mmap_errors twice. Once while probing the
namespace and second while initializing a pfn namespace.

With PFN_MODE_PMEM namespace, the memmap area is allocated from the device
area. Some architectures map the memmap area with large page size. On
architectures like ppc64, 16MB page for memap mapping can map 262144 pfns.
This maps a namespace size of 16G.
When populating memmap region with 16MB page from the device area,
make sure the allocated space is not used to map resources outside this
namespace. Such usage of device area will prevent a namespace destroy.
Add resource end pnf in altmap and use that to check if the memmap area
allocation can map pfn outside the namespace. On ppc64 in such case we fallback
to allocation from memory.

Allow arch to provide the supported alignments and use hugepage alignment only
if we support hugepage. Right now we depend on compile time configs whereas this
patch switch this to runtime discovery.
Architectures like ppc64 can have THP enabled in code, but then can have
hugepage size disabled by the hypervisor. This allows us to create dax devices
with PAGE_SIZE alignment in this case.
Existing dax namespace with alignment larger than PAGE_SIZE will fail to
initialize in this specific case. We still allow fsdax namespace initialization.
With respect to identifying whether to enable hugepage fault for a dax device,
if THP is enabled during compile, we default to taking hugepage fault and in dax
fault handler if we find the fault size > alignment we retry with PAGE_SIZE
fault size.
This also addresses the below failure scenario on ppc64

size change
Namespaces created with PFN_MODE_PMEM mode stores struct page in the reserve
block area. We need to make sure we account for the right struct page
size while doing this. Instead of directly depending on sizeof(struct page)
which can change based on different kernel config option, use the max struct
page size (64) while calculating the reserve block area. This makes sure pmem
device can be used across kernels built with different configs.
If the above assumption of max struct page size change, we need to update the
reserve block allocation space for new namespaces created.

Yi reported[1] that after commit a3619190d62e ("libnvdimm/pfn: stop
padding pmem namespaces to section alignment"), it was no longer
possible to create a device dax namespace with a 1G alignment. The
reason was that the pmem region was not itself 1G-aligned. The code
happily skips past the first 512M, but fails to account for a now
misaligned end offset (since space was allocated starting at that
misaligned address, and extending for size GBs). Reintroduce
end_trunc, so that the code correctly handles the misaligned end
address. This results in the same behavior as before the introduction
of the offending commit.

Pull libnvdimm fixes from Dan Williams:
"A collection of locking and async operations fixes for v5.3-rc2. These
had been soaking in a branch targeting the merge window, but missed
due to a regression hunt. This fixed up version has otherwise been in

In order to gain confidence in the locking changes the pull also
includes a debug / instrumentation patch to enable lockdep coverage
for libnvdimm subsystem operations that depend on the device_lock for
exclusion. As mentioned in the changelog it is a hack, but it works
and documents the locking expectations of the sub-system in a way that
others can use lockdep to verify. The driver core touches got an ack
from Greg.
Summary:
- Fix duplicate device_unregister() calls (multiple threads competing
to do unregister work when scheduling device removal from a sysfs
attribute of the self-same device).
- Fix badblocks registration order bug. Ensure region badblocks are
initialized in advance of namespace registration.
- Fix a deadlock between the bus lock and probe operations.
- Export device-core infrastructure to coordinate async operations
via the device ->dead state.
- Add device-core infrastructure to validate device_lock() usage with

At namespace creation time there is the potential for the "expected to
be zero" fields of a 'pfn' info-block to be filled with indeterminate
data. While the kernel buffer is zeroed on allocation it is immediately
overwritten by nd_pfn_validate() filling it with the current contents of
the on-media info-block location. For fields like, 'flags' and the
'padding' it potentially means that future implementations can not rely on
those fields being zero.
In preparation to stop using the 'start_pad' and 'end_trunc' fields for
section alignment, arrange for fields that are not explicitly
initialized to be guaranteed zero. Bump the minor version to indicate
it is safe to assume the 'padding' and 'flags' are zero. Otherwise,
this corruption is expected to benign since all other critical fields
are explicitly initialized.
Note The cc: stable is about spreading this new policy to as many
kernels as possible not fixing an issue in those kernels. It is not
until the change titled "libnvdimm/pfn: Stop padding pmem namespaces to
section alignment" where this improper initialization becomes a problem.
So if someone decides to backport "libnvdimm/pfn: Stop padding pmem
namespaces to section alignment" (which is not tagged for stable), make
sure this pre-requisite is flagged.

For good reason, the standard device_lock() is marked
lockdep_set_novalidate_class() because there is simply no sane way to
describe the myriad ways the device_lock() ordered with other locks.
However, that leaves subsystems that know their own local device_lock()
ordering rules to find lock ordering mistakes manually. Instead,
introduce an optional / additional lockdep-enabled lock that a subsystem
can acquire in all the same paths that the device_lock() is acquired.
A conversion of the NFIT driver and NVDIMM subsystem to a
lockdep-validate device_lock() scheme is included. The
debug_nvdimm_lock() implementation implements the correct lock-class and
stacking order for the libnvdimm device topology hierarchy.
Yes, this is a hack, but hopefully it is a useful hack for other
subsystems device_lock() debug sessions. Quoting Greg:
"Yeah, it feels a bit hacky but it's really up to a subsystem to mess up
using it as much as anything else, so user beware :)
I don't object to it if it makes things easier for you to debug."

Currently support for 64-bit sector_t and blkcnt_t is optional on 32-bit
architectures. These types are required to support block device and/or
file sizes larger than 2 TiB, and have generally defaulted to on for
a long time. Enabling the option only increases the i386 tinyconfig
size by 145 bytes, and many data structures already always use
64-bit values for their in-core and on-disk data structures anyway,
so there should not be a large change in dynamic memory usage either.
Dropping this option removes a somewhat weird non-default config that
has cause various bugs or compiler warnings when actually used.

Similar to "libnvdimm: Fix altmap reservation size calculation" provide
for a reservation of a full page worth of info block space at info-block

from honoring the default 2MB alignment, but provide for a reservation
for corner case configurations that would otherwise fit.

Libnvdimm reserves the first 8K of pfn and devicedax namespaces to
store a superblock describing the namespace. This 8K reservation
is contained within the altmap area which the kernel uses for the
vmemmap backing for the pages within the namespace. The altmap
allows for some pages at the start of the altmap area to be reserved
and that mechanism is used to protect the superblock from being
re-used as vmemmap backing.
The number of PFNs to reserve is calculated using:
PHYS_PFN(SZ_8K)
Which is implemented as:
#define PHYS_PFN(x) ((unsigned long)((x) >> PAGE_SHIFT))
So on systems where PAGE_SIZE is greater than 8K the reservation
size is truncated to zero and the superblock area is re-used as
vmemmap backing. As a result all the namespace information stored
in the superblock (i.e. if it's a PFN or DAX namespace) is lost
and the namespace needs to be re-created to get access to the
contents.
This patch fixes this by using PFN_UP() rather than PHYS_PFN() to ensure
that at least one page is reserved. On systems with a 4K pages size this
patch should have no effect.

Commit cfe30b872058 "libnvdimm, pmem: adjust for section collisions with
'System RAM'" enabled Linux to workaround occasions where platform
firmware arranges for "System RAM" and "Persistent Memory" to collide
within a single section boundary. Unfortunately, as reported in this
issue [1], platform firmware can inflict the same collision between
persistent memory regions.
The approach of interrogating iomem_resource does not work in this
case because platform firmware may merge multiple regions into a single
iomem_resource range. Instead provide a method to interrogate regions
that share the same parent bus.
This is a stop-gap until the core-MM can grow support for hotplug on
sub-section boundaries.

If there are badblocks present in the 'struct page' area for pfn
namespaces, until now, the only way to clear them has been to force the
namespace into raw mode, clear the errors, and re-enable the fsdax mode.
This is clunky, given that it should be easy enough for the pfn driver
to do the same.
Add a new helper that uses the most recently available badblocks list to
check whether there are any badblocks that lie in the volatile struct
page area. If so, before initializing the struct pages, send down
targeted writes via nvdimm_write_bytes to write zeroes to the affected
blocks, and thus clear errors.

In preparation for fixing dax-dma-vs-unmap issues, filesystems need to
be able to rely on the fact that they will get wakeups on dev_pagemap
page-idle events. Introduce MEMORY_DEVICE_FS_DAX and
generic_dax_page_free() as common indicator / infrastructure for dax
filesytems to require. With this change there are no users of the
MEMORY_DEVICE_HOST designation, so remove it.
The HMM sub-system extended dev_pagemap to arrange a callback when a
dev_pagemap managed page is freed. Since a dev_pagemap page is free /
idle when its reference count is 1 it requires an additional branch to
check the page-type at put_page() time. Given put_page() is a hot-path
we do not want to incur that check if HMM is not in use, so a static
branch is used to avoid that overhead when not necessary.
Now, the FS_DAX implementation wants to reuse this mechanism for
receiving dev_pagemap ->page_free() callbacks. Rework the HMM-specific
static-key into a generic mechanism that either HMM or FS_DAX code paths
can enable.
For ARCH=um builds, and any other arch that lacks ZONE_DEVICE support,
care must be taken to compile out the DEV_PAGEMAP_OPS infrastructure.
However, we still need to support FS_DAX in the FS_DAX_LIMITED case
implemented by the s390/dcssblk driver.

This new interface is similar to how struct device (and many others)
work. The caller initializes a 'struct dev_pagemap' as required
and calls 'devm_memremap_pages'. This allows the pagemap structure to
be embedded in another structure and thus container_of can be used. In
this way application specific members can be stored in a containing
struct.
This will be used by the P2P infrastructure and HMM could probably
be cleaned up to use it as well (instead of having it's own, similar
'hmm_devmem_pages_create' function).

The following namespace configuration attempt:
# ndctl create-namespace -e namespace0.0 -m devdax -a 1G -f
libndctl: ndctl_dax_enable: dax0.1: failed to enable
Error: namespace0.0: failed to enable

...fails when the backing memory range is not physically aligned to 1G:
# cat /proc/iomem | grep Persistent
210000000-30fffffff : Persistent Memory (legacy)
In the above example the 4G persistent memory range starts and ends on a
256MB boundary.
We handle this case correctly when needing to handle cases that violate
section alignment (128MB) collisions against "System RAM", and we simply
need to extend that padding/truncation for the 1GB alignment use case.

restrict the supported alignments that can be set on a namespace. This

The alignment of a DAX and PFN regions dictates the page sizes that can
be used to map the region. Even if the hardware page sizes are known the
actual range of supported page sizes that can be used with DAX depends
on the kernel configuration. As a result it's best that the kernel
advertises the alignments that should be used with these region types.
This patch adds the 'supported_alignments' region attribute to expose
this information to userspace.
