It first takes triggers_list_lock and then RTNL. A classical AB-BA deadlock. phy_led_triggers_registers() does not require the RTNL, it does not make any calls into the network stack which require protection. There is also no requirement the PHY has been attached to a MAC, the triggers only make use of phydev state. This allows the call to phy_led_triggers_registers() to be placed elsewhere. PHY probe() and release() don't hold RTNL, so solving the AB-BA deadlock. [ Upstream commit 87d126852158467ab87d5cbc36ccfd3f15464a6c ] With the current sfp_fixup_ignore_tx_fault() fixup we ignore the TX_FAULT signal, but we also need to apply sfp_fixup_ignore_los() in order to be able to communicate with the module even if the fiber isn't connected for configuration purposes. This is needed for all the MA5671a firmwares, excluding the FS modded firmware. Commit fd580c9830316eda ("net: sfp: augment SFP parsing with phy_interface_t bitmap") did not add augumentation for the interface bitmap in the quirk for Ubiquiti U-Fiber Instant. The subsequent commit f81fa96d8a6c7a77 ("net: phylink: use phy_interface_t bitmaps for optical modules") then changed phylink code for selection of SFP interface: instead of using link mode bitmap, the interface bitmap is used, and the fastest interface mode supported by both SFP module and MAC is chosen. Since the interface bitmap contains also modes faster than 1000base-x, this caused a regression wherein this module stopped working out-of-the-box. Fix this. [ Upstream commit e0d1c55501d377163eb57feed863777ed1c973ad ] The blamed commit changed the conditions which phylib uses to stop and start the state machine in the suspend and resume paths, and while improving it, has caused two issues. The original code used this test: phydev->attached_dev && phydev->adjust_link and if true, the paths would handle the PHY state machine. This test evaluates true for normal drivers that are using phylib directly while the PHY is attached to the network device, but false in all other cases, which include the following cases: - when the PHY has never been attached to a network device. - when the PHY has been detached from a network device (as phy_detach() sets phydev->attached_dev to NULL, phy_disconnect() calls phy_detach() and additionally sets phydev->adjust_link NULL.) - when phylink is using the driver (as phydev->adjust_link is NULL.) Only the third case was incorrect, and the blamed commit attempted to fix this by changing this test to (simplified for brevity, see phy_uses_state_machine()): phydev->phy_link_change == phy_link_change ? phydev->attached_dev && phydev->adjust_link : true However, this also incorrectly evaluates true in the first two cases. Fix the first case by ensuring that phy_uses_state_machine() returns false when phydev->phy_link_change is NULL. Fix the second case by ensuring that phydev->phy_link_change is set to NULL when phy_detach() is called. 2026-01-30net: phy: allow MDIO bus PM ops to start/stop state machine for ↵Vladimir Oltean1-2/+29
phylink-controlled PHY [ Upstream commit fc75ea20ffb452652f0d4033f38fe88d7cfdae35 ] DSA has 2 kinds of drivers: 1. Those who call dsa_switch_suspend() and dsa_switch_resume() from their device PM ops: qca8k-8xxx, bcm_sf2, microchip ksz 2. Those who don't: all others. The above methods should be optional. For type 1, dsa_switch_suspend() calls dsa_user_suspend() -> phylink_stop(), and dsa_switch_resume() calls dsa_user_resume() -> phylink_start(). These seem good candidates for setting mac_managed_pm = true because that is essentially its definition [1], but that does not seem to be the biggest problem for now, and is not what this change focuses on. Talking strictly about the 2nd category of DSA drivers here (which do not have MAC managed PM, meaning that for their attached PHYs, mdio_bus_phy_suspend() and mdio_bus_phy_resume() should run in full), I have noticed that the following warning from mdio_bus_phy_resume() is triggered: WARN_ON(phydev->state != PHY_HALTED && phydev->state != PHY_READY && phydev->state != PHY_UP); because the PHY state machine is running. It's running as a result of a previous dsa_user_open() -> ... -> phylink_start() -> phy_start() having been initiated by the user. The previous mdio_bus_phy_suspend() was supposed to have called phy_stop_machine(), but it didn't. So this is why the PHY is in state PHY_NOLINK by the time mdio_bus_phy_resume() runs. mdio_bus_phy_suspend() did not call phy_stop_machine() because for phylink, the phydev->adjust_link function pointer is NULL. This seems a technicality introduced by commit fddd91016d16 ("phylib: fix PAL state machine restart on resume"). That commit was written before phylink existed, and was intended to avoid crashing with consumer drivers which don't use the PHY state machine - phylink always does, when using a PHY. But phylink itself has historically not been developed with suspend/resume in mind, and apparently not tested too much in that scenario, allowing this bug to exist unnoticed for so long. Plus, prior to the WARN_ON(), it would have likely been invisible. This issue is not in fact restricted to type 2 DSA drivers (according to the above ad-hoc classification), but can be extrapolated to any MAC driver with phylink and MDIO-bus-managed PHY PM ops. DSA is just where the issue was reported. Otherwise, we implicitly know that the phydev has the phylink-provided phylink_phy_change() callback, and when phylink is used, the PHY state machine always needs to be stopped/ started on the suspend/resume path. The code is structured as such that if phydev->phy_link_change() is absent, it is a matter of time until the kernel will crash - no need to further complicate the test. Thus, for the situation where the PM is not managed by the MAC, we will make the MDIO bus PM ops treat identically the phylink-controlled PHYs with the phylib-controlled PHYs where an adjust_link() callback is supplied. In both cases, the MDIO bus PM ops should stop and restart the PHY state machine. For that, it will need to compare the phydev->phy_link_change() function pointer with the eponymous phy_link_change() provided by phylib. To avoid forward function declarations, the default PHY link state change method should be moved upwards. There is no functional change associated with this patch, it is only to reduce the noise from a real bug fix. First part are the function vsc8584_ptp_probe_once() and vsc8584_ptp_probe() at probe time which initialize the locks, queues, creates the PTP device. The second part is the function vsc8584_ptp_init() at config_init() time which initialize PTP in the HW. For VSC8574 and VSC8572, the PTP initialization is incomplete. It is missing the first part but it makes the second part. Meaning that the ptp_clock_register() is never called. There is no crash without the first part when enabling PTP but this is unexpected because some PHys have PTP functionality exposed by the driver and some don't even though they share the same PTP clock PTP. [ Upstream commit 60f887b1290b43a4f5a3497982a725687b193fa4 ] When a PHY is halted (e.g. `ip link set dev lan2 down`), several fields in struct phy_device may still reflect the last active connection. This leads to ethtool showing stale values even though the link is down. Reset selected fields in _phy_state_machine() when transitioning to PHY_HALTED and the link was previously up: - speed/duplex -> UNKNOWN, but only in autoneg mode (in forced mode these fields carry configuration, not status) - master_slave_state -> UNKNOWN if previously supported - mdix -> INVALID (state only, same meaning as "unknown") - lp_advertising -> always cleared The cleanup is skipped if the PHY is in PHY_ERROR state, so the last values remain available for diagnostics. [ Upstream commit deb105f49879dd50d595f7f55207d6e74dec34e6 ] The 88e1510 PHY has an erratum where the phy downshift counter is not cleared after phy being suspended(BMCR_PDOWN set) and then later resumed(BMCR_PDOWN cleared). This can cause the gigabit link to intermittently downshift to a lower speed. Disabling and re-enabling the downshift feature clears the counter, allowing the PHY to retry gigabit link negotiation up to the programmed retry count times before downshifting. This behavior has been observed on copper links. When the connected MAC enables EEE, it causes link instability and communication failures. The issue is reproducible with a iMX8MP and relevant stmmac ethernet port. Since the introduction of phylink-managed EEE support in the stmmac driver, EEE is now enabled by default, leading to issues on systems using the DP83867 PHY. The driver is configured to store the nanosecond part of the timestmap in the ptp reserved bits and it would take the second part by reading the LTC. The problem is that when reading the LTC we are in atomic context and to read the second part will go over mdio bus which might sleep, so we get an error. The fix consists in actually put all the frames in a queue and start the aux work and in that work to read the LTC and then calculate the full received time. Commit 21b688dabecb ("net: phy: micrel: Cable Diag feature for lan8814 phy") introduced cable_test support for the LAN8814 that reuses parts of the KSZ886x logic and introduced the cable_diag_reg and pair_mask parameters to account for differences between those chips. However, it did not update the ksz8081_type struct, so those members are now 0, causing no pairs to be tested in ksz886x_cable_test_get_status and ksz886x_cable_test_wait_for_completion to poll the wrong register for the affected PHYs (Basic Control/Reset, which is 0 in normal operation) and exit immediately. Fix this by setting both struct members accordingly. If the PHY's ofnode has an "leds" subnode, then the LEDs will be (un)registered when probing/removing the genphy driver. This could occur if the leds are for a non-generic driver that isn't loaded for whatever reason. Synchronously removing the PHY device in phy_detach leads to the following deadlock: rtnl_lock() ndo_close() ... phy_detach() phy_remove() phy_leds_unregister() led_classdev_unregister() led_trigger_set() netdev_trigger_deactivate() unregister_netdevice_notifier() rtnl_lock() There is a corresponding deadlock on the open/register side of things (and that one is reported by lockdep), but it requires a race while this one is deterministic. Generic PHYs do not support LEDs anyway, so don't bother registering them. [ Upstream commit dd4360c0e8504f2f7639c7f5d07c93cfd6a98333 ] Restrict the 100Mbit forced-mode workaround to link-down transitions only, to prevent repeated link reset cycles in certain configurations. The workaround was originally introduced to improve signal reliability when switching cables between long and short distances. It temporarily forces the PHY into 10 Mbps before returning to 100 Mbps. However, when used with autonegotiating link partners (e.g., Intel i350), executing this workaround on every link change can confuse the partner and cause constant renegotiation loops. This results in repeated link down/up transitions and the PHY never reaching a stable state. Limit the workaround to only run during the PHY_NOLINK state. This ensures it is triggered only once per link drop, avoiding disruptive toggling while still preserving its intended effect. Note: I am not able to reproduce the original issue that this workaround addresses. I can only confirm that 100 Mbit mode works correctly in my test setup. Based on code inspection, I assume the workaround aims to reset some internal state machine or signal block by toggling speeds. However, a PHY reset is already performed earlier in the function via phy_init_hw(), which may achieve a similar effect. Without a reproducer, I conservatively keep the workaround but restrict its conditions. [ Upstream commit 9dfe110cc0f6ef42af8e81ce52aef34a647d0b8a ] Force a fixed MDI-X mode when auto-negotiation is disabled to prevent link instability. When forcing the link speed and duplex on a LAN9500 PHY (e.g., with `ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off ...`) while leaving MDI-X control in auto mode, the PHY fails to establish a stable link. This occurs because the PHY's Auto-MDIX algorithm is not designed to operate when auto-negotiation is disabled. In this state, the PHY continuously toggles the TX/RX signal pairs, which prevents the link partner from synchronizing. This patch resolves the issue by detecting when auto-negotiation is disabled. If the MDI-X control mode is set to 'auto', the driver now forces a specific, stable mode (ETH_TP_MDI) to prevent the pair toggling. This choice of a fixed MDI mode mirrors the behavior the hardware would exhibit if the AUTOMDIX_EN strap were configured for a fixed MDI connection. [ Upstream commit a141af8eb2272ab0f677a7f2653874840bc9b214 ] Correct the Auto-MDIX configuration to ensure userspace settings are respected when the feature is disabled by the AUTOMDIX_EN hardware strap. The LAN9500 PHY allows its default MDI-X mode to be configured via a hardware strap. If this strap sets the default to "MDI-X off", the driver was previously unable to enable Auto-MDIX from userspace. When handling the ETH_TP_MDI_AUTO case, the driver would set the SPECIAL_CTRL_STS_AMDIX_ENABLE_ bit but neglected to set the required SPECIAL_CTRL_STS_OVRRD_AMDIX_ bit. Without the override flag, the PHY falls back to its hardware strap default, ignoring the software request. This patch corrects the behavior by also setting the override bit when enabling Auto-MDIX. This ensures that the userspace configuration takes precedence over the hardware strap, allowing Auto-MDIX to be enabled correctly in all scenarios. [ Upstream commit 57a92d14659df3e7e7e0052358c8cc68bbbc3b5e ] We have noticed that when PHY timestamping is enabled, L2 frames seems to be modified by changing two 2 bytes with a value of 0. The place were these 2 bytes seems to be random(or I couldn't find a pattern). In most of the cases the userspace can ignore these frames but if for example those 2 bytes are in the correction field there is nothing to do. This seems to happen when configuring the HW for IPv4 even that the flow is not enabled. These 2 bytes correspond to the UDPv4 checksum and once we don't enable clearing the checksum when using L2 frames then the frame doesn't seem to be changed anymore. When running one-step sync timestamping, the HW is configured to insert the TX time into the frame, so there is no reason to keep the skb anymore. As in this case the HW will never generate an interrupt to say that the frame was timestamped, then the frame will never released. Fix this by freeing the frame in case of one-step timestamping. When disabling the network port, phy_detach() calls device_link_del() to remove the device link, but it does not clear phydev->devlink, so phydev->devlink is not a NULL pointer. Then the network port is re-enabled, but if phy_attach_direct() fails before calling device_link_add(), the code jumps to the "error" label and calls phy_detach(). Since phydev->devlink retains the old value from the previous attach/detach cycle, device_link_del() uses the old value, which accesses a NULL pointer and causes a crash. The checking condition in phylink_expects_phy() aims to achieve the same result as the checking condition in phylink_attach_phy(). However, the checking condition in phylink_expects_phy() uses pl->link_config.interface, while phylink_attach_phy() uses pl->link_interface. Initially, both pl->link_interface and pl->link_config.interface are set to SGMII, and pl->cfg_link_an_mode is set to MLO_AN_INBAND. When the interface switches from SGMII to 2500BASE-X, pl->link_config.interface is updated by phylink_major_config(). At this point, pl->cfg_link_an_mode remains MLO_AN_INBAND, and pl->link_config.interface is set to 2500BASE-X. Subsequently, when the STMMAC interface is taken down administratively and brought back up, it is blocked by phylink_expects_phy(). Since phylink_expects_phy() and phylink_attach_phy() aim to achieve the same result, phylink_expects_phy() should check pl->link_interface, which never changes, instead of pl->link_config.interface, which is updated by phylink_major_config(). With lan88xx based devices the lan78xx driver can get stuck in an interrupt loop while bringing the device up, flooding the kernel log with messages like the following: lan78xx 2-3:1.0 enp1s0u3: kevent 4 may have been dropped Removing interrupt support from the lan88xx PHY driver forces the driver to use polling instead, which avoids the problem. The issue has been observed with Raspberry Pi devices at least since 4.14 (see [1], bug report for their downstream kernel), as well as with Nvidia devices [2] in 2020, where disabling interrupts was the vendor-suggested workaround (together with the claim that phylib changes in 4.9 made the interrupt handling in lan78xx incompatible). Iperf reports well over 900Mbits/sec per direction with client in --dualtest mode, so there does not seem to be a significant impact on throughput (lan88xx device connected via switch to the peer). [ Upstream commit b7f0ee992adf601aa00c252418266177eb7ac2bc ] A network restart test on a router led to an out-of-memory condition, which was traced to a memory leak in the PHY LED trigger code. The root cause is misuse of the devm API. The registration function (phy_led_triggers_register) is called from phy_attach_direct, not phy_probe, and the unregister function (phy_led_triggers_unregister) is called from phy_detach, not phy_remove. This means the register and unregister functions can be called multiple times for the same PHY device, but devm-allocated memory is not freed until the driver is unbound. This also prevents kmemleak from detecting the leak, as the devm API internally stores the allocated pointer. Fix this by replacing devm_kzalloc/devm_kcalloc with standard kzalloc/kcalloc, and add the corresponding kfree calls in the unregister path. Without this delay, soft_reset function returns an error and prevents successful PHY init. Add the PHY_RST_AFTER_CLK_EN to make sure that this indication is respected. In my experience not having this flag enabled would lead to, on some boots, the wrong MII mode being selected if the PHY was initialized on the bootloader and was receiving data during Linux boot. The SW_RESET definition was incorrectly assigned to bit 14, which is the Digital Restart bit according to the datasheet. This commit corrects SW_RESET to bit 15 and assigns DIG_RESTART to bit 14 as per the datasheet specifications. The SW_RESET define is only used in the phy_reset function, which fully re-initializes the PHY after the reset is performed. Commit c938ab4da0eb ("net: phy: Manual remove LEDs to ensure correct ordering") correctly fixed a problem with using devm_ but missed removing the LED entry from the LEDs list. This cause kernel panic on specific scenario where the port for the PHY is torn down and up and the kmod for the PHY is removed. On setting the port down the first time, the assosiacted LEDs are correctly unregistered. The associated kmod for the PHY is now removed. The kmod is now added again and the port is now put up, the associated LED are registered again. On putting the port down again for the second time after these step, the LED list now have 4 elements. With the first 2 already unregistered previously and the 2 new one registered again. This cause a kernel panic as the first 2 element should have been removed. Fix this by correctly removing the element when LED is unregistered.
