2011-08-12*sonic/natsemi/ns83829: Move the National Semi-conductor driversJeff Kirsher1-3370/+0
Move the National Semi-conductor drivers into drivers/net/ethernet/natsemi/ and make the necessary Kconfig and Makefile changes. Also moved the 8390 (National Semi-conductor) devices as a sub-menu of National Semi-conductor devices. - moved the ibmlana driver as well into this directory since it is a "SONIC" driver CC: Alfred Arnold <alfred.arnold@lancom.de> CC: Thomas Bogendoerfer <tsbogend@alpha.franken.de> CC: Harald Welte <laforge@gnumonks.org> CC: Tim Hockin <thockin@hockin.org> CC: <linux-ns83820@kvack.org> CC: Kevin Chea <kchea@yahoo.com> CC: Marc Gauthier <marc@linux-xtensa.org> CC: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net> Signed-off-by: Jeff Kirsher <jeffrey.t.kirsher@intel.com> Acked-by: Marc Gauthier <marc@tensilica.com>

All these are instances of #define NAME value; or #define NAME(params_opt) value; These of course fail to build when used in contexts like if(foo $OP NAME) while(bar $OP NAME) and may silently generate the wrong code in contexts such as foo = NAME + 1; /* foo = value; + 1; */ bar = NAME - 1; /* bar = value; - 1; */ baz = NAME & quux; /* baz = value; & quux; */ Reported on comp.lang.c, Message-ID: <ab0d55fe-25e5-482b-811e-c475aa6065c3@c29g2000yqd.googlegroups.com> Initial analysis of the dangers provided by Keith Thompson in that thread. There are many more instances of more complicated macros having unnecessary trailing semicolons, but this pile seems to be all of the cases of simple values suffering from the problem. (Thus things that are likely to be found in one of the contexts above, more complicated ones aren't.) 2011-04-30ethtool: cosmetic: Use ethtool ethtool_cmd_speed APIDavid Decotigny1-3/+3
This updates the network drivers so that they don't access the ethtool_cmd::speed field directly, but use ethtool_cmd_speed() instead. For most of the drivers, these changes are purely cosmetic and don't fix any problem, such as for those 1GbE/10GbE drivers that indirectly call their own ethtool get_settings()/mii_ethtool_gset(). The changes are meant to enforce code consistency and provide robustness with future larger throughputs, at the expense of a few CPU cycles for each ethtool operation. All drivers compiled with make allyesconfig ion x86_64 have been updated. The driver stores the PCI resource address into 'unsigned long' variable before calling ioremap() on it. This warrants a kernel oops when the registers are accessed on PPC 44x platforms which (being 32-bit) have PCI memory space mapped beyond 4 GB. The arch/ppc/ kernel has a fixup in ioremap() that creates an illusion of the PCI memory resources are mapped below 4 GB, but arch/powerpc/ code got rid of this trick, having instead CONFIG_RESOURCES_64BIT enabled. 2008-02-03natsemi: Update locking documentationMark Brown1-16/+2
The documentation regarding synchronisation at the head of the natsemi driver was badly bitrotted so replace it with a general statement about the techniques used which is less likely to bitrot. Also remove the note saying these chips are uncommon - it makes little difference but they were used in a number of laptops and at least one mass market PCI ethernet card. 2008-01-09[NET]: Do not check netif_running() and carrier state in ->poll()David S. Miller1-1/+1
Drivers do this to try to break out of the ->poll()'ing loop when the device is being brought administratively down. Now that we have a napi_disable() "pending" state we are going to solve that problem generically. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

Ingo --------------------> Subject: natsemi: fix oops, link back netdevice from private-struct From: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> this commit: commit bea3348eef27e6044b6161fd04c3152215f96411 Author: Stephen Hemminger <shemminger@linux-foundation.org> Date: Wed Oct 3 16:41:36 2007 -0700 [NET]: Make NAPI polling independent of struct net_device objects. added np->dev to drivers/net/natsemi.c's struct netdev_private, but forgot to initialize that new field upon driver init. 2007-10-15natsemi: Use round_jiffies() for slow timersMark Brown1-3/+7
Unless we have failed to fill the RX ring the timer used by the natsemi driver is not particularly urgent and can use round_jiffies() to allow grouping with other timers. Signed-off-by: Mark Brown <broonie@sirena.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Jeff Garzik <jeff@garzik.org>
2007-10-11natsemi: Use NATSEMI_TIMER_FREQ consistentlyMark Brown1-2/+2
The natsemi driver has a define NATSEMI_TIMER_FREQ which looks like it controls the normal frequency of the chip poll timer but in fact only takes effect for the first run of the timer. Adjust the value of the define to match that used by the timer and use the define consistently. Signed-off-by: Mark Brown <broonie@sirena.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Jeff Garzik <jeff@garzik.org>

It's been a useless no-op for long enough in 2.6 so I figured it's time to remove it. 2007-10-11[NET]: Make NAPI polling independent of struct net_device objects.Stephen Hemminger1-20/+22
Several devices have multiple independant RX queues per net device, and some have a single interrupt doorbell for several queues. In either case, it's easier to support layouts like that if the structure representing the poll is independant from the net device itself. The signature of the ->poll() call back goes from: int foo_poll(struct net_device *dev, int *budget) to int foo_poll(struct napi_struct *napi, int budget) The caller is returned the number of RX packets processed (or the number of "NAPI credits" consumed if you want to get abstract). The callee no longer messes around bumping dev->quota, *budget, etc. because that is all handled in the caller upon return. The napi_struct is to be embedded in the device driver private data structures. Furthermore, it is the driver's responsibility to disable all NAPI instances in it's ->stop() device close handler. Since the napi_struct is privatized into the driver's private data structures, only the driver knows how to get at all of the napi_struct instances it may have per-device. With lots of help and suggestions from Rusty Russell, Roland Dreier, Michael Chan, Jeff Garzik, and Jamal Hadi Salim. Bug fixes from Thomas Graf, Roland Dreier, Peter Zijlstra, Joseph Fannin, Scott Wood, Hans J. Koch, and Michael Chan. [ Ported to current tree and all drivers converted.
