2024-05-08net: annotate writes on dev->mtu from ndo_change_mtu()Eric Dumazet1-1/+1
Simon reported that ndo_change_mtu() methods were never updated to use WRITE_ONCE(dev->mtu, new_mtu) as hinted in commit 501a90c94510 ("inet: protect against too small mtu values.") We read dev->mtu without holding RTNL in many places, with READ_ONCE() annotations. 2022-12-12ethernet: s2io: don't call dev_kfree_skb() under spin_lock_irqsave()Yang Yingliang1-1/+1
It is not allowed to call kfree_skb() or consume_skb() from hardware interrupt context or with hardware interrupts being disabled. It should use dev_kfree_skb_irq() or dev_consume_skb_irq() instead. The difference between them is free reason, dev_kfree_skb_irq() means the SKB is dropped in error and dev_consume_skb_irq() means the SKB is consumed in normal. In this case, dev_kfree_skb() is called in free_tx_buffers() to drop the SKBs in tx buffers, when the card is down, so replace it with dev_kfree_skb_irq() here. 2022-07-06eth: remove neterion/vxgeJakub Kicinski13-23147/+0
The last meaningful change to this driver was made by Jon in 2011. As much as we'd like to believe that this is because the code is perfect the chances are nobody is using this hardware. Because of the size of this driver there is a nontrivial maintenance cost to keeping this code around, in the last 2 years we're averaging more than 1 change a month. Some of which require nontrivial review effort, see commit 877fe9d49b74 ("Revert "drivers/net/ethernet/neterion/vxge: Fix a use-after-free bug in vxge-main.c"") for example. Let's try to remove this driver. In general, IMHO, we need to establish a clear path for shedding dead code. It will be hard to unless we have some experience trying to delete stuff. Use dma_set_mask_and_coherent() instead of unrolling it with some dma_set_mask()+dma_set_coherent_mask(). Moreover, as stated in [1], dma_set_mask() with a 64-bit mask will never fail if dev->dma_mask is non-NULL. So, if it fails, the 32 bits case will also fail for the same reason. That said, 'high_dma' can only be 1 after a successful dma_set_mask_and_coherent(). Simplify code and remove some dead code accordingly, including a now useless parameter to vxge_device_register(). 2021-12-14net_tstamp: add new flag HWTSTAMP_FLAG_BONDED_PHC_INDEXHangbin Liu1-4/+0
Since commit 94dd016ae538 ("bond: pass get_ts_info and SIOC[SG]HWTSTAMP ioctl to active device") the user could get bond active interface's PHC index directly. But when there is a failover, the bond active interface will change, thus the PHC index is also changed. This may break the user's program if they did not update the PHC timely. This patch adds a new hwtstamp_config flag HWTSTAMP_FLAG_BONDED_PHC_INDEX. When the user wants to get the bond active interface's PHC, they need to add this flag and be aware the PHC index may be changed. With the new flag. All flag checks in current drivers are removed. This big patch sprinkles const on local variables and function arguments which may refer to netdev->dev_addr. Commit 406f42fa0d3c ("net-next: When a bond have a massive amount of VLANs...") introduced a rbtree for faster Ethernet address look up. To maintain netdev->dev_addr in this tree we need to make all the writes to it got through appropriate helpers. Some of the changes here are not strictly required - const is sometimes cast off but pointer is not used for writing. It seems like it's still better to add the const in case the code changes later or relevant -W flags get enabled for the build. No functional changes. 2021-07-27dev_ioctl: split out ndo_eth_ioctlArnd Bergmann2-2/+2
Most users of ndo_do_ioctl are ethernet drivers that implement the MII commands SIOCGMIIPHY/SIOCGMIIREG/SIOCSMIIREG, or hardware timestamping with SIOCSHWTSTAMP/SIOCGHWTSTAMP. Separate these from the few drivers that use ndo_do_ioctl to implement SIOCBOND, SIOCBR and SIOCWANDEV commands. This is a purely cosmetic change intended to help readers find their way through the implementation. wait_for_cmd_complete() uses in_interrupt() to detect whether it is safe to sleep or not. The usage of in_interrupt() in drivers is phased out and Linus clearly requested that code which changes behaviour depending on context should either be seperated or the context be conveyed in an argument passed by the caller, which usually knows the context. in_interrupt() also is only partially correct because it fails to chose the correct code path when just preemption or interrupts are disabled. Add an argument 'may_block' to both functions and adjust the callers to pass the context information. As part of the W=1 cleanups for ethernet, a million [*] driver comments had to be cleaned up to get the W=1 compilation to succeed. This change finally makes the drivers/net/ethernet tree compile with W=1 set on the command line. NOTE: The kernel uses kdoc style (see Documentation/process/kernel-doc.rst) when documenting code, not doxygen or other styles. After this patch the x86_64 build has no warnings from W=1, however scripts/kernel-doc says there are 1545 more warnings in source files, that I need to develop a script to fix in a followup patch. The UDP reuseport conflict was a little bit tricky. The net-next code, via bpf-next, extracted the reuseport handling into a helper so that the BPF sk lookup code could invoke it. At the same time, the logic for reuseport handling of unconnected sockets changed via commit efc6b6f6c3113e8b203b9debfb72d81e0f3dcace which changed the logic to carry on the reuseport result into the rest of the lookup loop if we do not return immediately. This requires moving the reuseport_has_conns() logic into the callers. While we are here, get rid of inline directives as they do not belong in foo.c files. Using uninitialized_var() is dangerous as it papers over real bugs[1] (or can in the future), and suppresses unrelated compiler warnings (e.g. "unused variable"). If the compiler thinks it is uninitialized, either simply initialize the variable or make compiler changes.
