[ Upstream commit e0346f9fcb6c636d2f870e6666de8781413f34ea ] If we receive the link status message from PF with link up before queues are actually enabled, it will trigger a TX hang. This fixes the issue by ignoring a link up message if the VF state is not yet in RUNNING state. 2017-08-26i40evf: prevent VF close returning before state transitions to DOWNSudheer Mogilappagari1-1/+3
Currently i40evf_close() can return before state transitions to __I40EVF_DOWN because of the latency involved in processing and receiving response from PF driver and scheduling of VF watchdog_task. Due to this inconsistency an immediate call to i40evf_open() fails because state is still DOWN_PENDING. When a VF interface is in up state and we try to add it as slave, The bonding driver calls dev_close() and dev_open() in short duration resulting in dev_open returning error. The ifenslave command needs to be run again for dev_open to succeed. This fix ensures that watchdog timer is scheduled immediately after admin queue operations are scheduled in i40evf_down(). In addition a wait condition is added at the end of i40evf_close so that function wont return when state is still DOWN_PENDING. The timeout value is chosen after some profiling and includes some buffer. This patch implements the complete version of the virtchnl.h file with final renames, and fixes the related code in i40e and i40evf. It also expands comments, and adds details on the usage of certain fields. In addition, due to the changes a couple of casts are needed to prevent errors found by sparse after renaming some fields. This morphs all the i40e and i40evf references to/in virtchnl.h to be generic, using only automated methods. Updates all the callers to use the new names. 2017-04-07i40e/i40evf: Add capability exchange for outer checksumPreethi Banala1-1/+3
This patch adds a capability negotiation between VF and PF using ENCAP/ ENCAP_CSUM offload flags in order for the VF to support outer checksum and TSO offloads for encapsulated packets. These capabilities were assumed by default and enabled in current hardware. Going forward, these features needs to be negotiated with PF before advertising to the stack. Additionally, strip out the mac.type checks for X722 since outer checksums are enabled based on the ENCAP_CSUM offload negotiation flag and maintain consistency between drivers in how the features are configured. 2017-03-29i40e/i40evf: Change the way we limit the maximum frame size for RxAlexander Duyck1-4/+10
This patch changes the way we handle the maximum frame size for the Rx path. Previously we were rounding up to 2K for a 1500 MTU and then brining the max frame size down to MTU plus a fixed amount. With this patch applied what we now do is limit the maximum frame to 1.5K minus the value for NET_IP_ALIGN for standard MTU, and for any MTU greater than 1500 we allow up to the maximum frame size. This makes the behavior more consistent with the other drivers such as igb which had similar logic. In addition it reduces the test matrix for MTU since we only have two max frame sizes that are handled for Rx now. 2017-03-29i40evf: enforce descriptor write-back mechanism for VFPreethi Banala1-4/+0
The current driver mode is to use a write-back mechanism for the head register which indicates transmit completions. The VF driver needs to be able to work on hardware that exclusively uses descriptor write-back, so change the default driver mode of operation to descriptor write-back for VF. In our analysis, performance wasn't significantly different with either write-back method. 2017-03-15i40evf: add client interfaceMitch Williams1-1/+12
In preparation for upcoming RDMA-capable hardware, add a client interface to the VF driver. This is a slightly-simplified version of the PF client interface, with the names changed to protect the innocent. Due to the nature of the VF<->PF interactions, the client interface sometimes needs to call back into itself to pass messages. Because of this, we can't use the coarse-grained locking like the PF's client interface uses. Instead, we handle all client interactions in a separate thread so the watchdog can still run and process virtual channel messages. One tricky part here is that the firmware support for these Devices introduces a mismatch between the PHY type enum and the bitfields for the phy types. This change creates a macro and uses it to increment the 25G PHY values when creating 25G bitfields. 2016-06-28i40evf: don't overflow bufferMitch Williams1-0/+8
If the user adds an obscene amount of MAC addresses, the driver will run into the situation where it has too many address requests to fit into a single PF message. The driver checks for this case, and calculates the maximum number of messages that it can send. Then it completely ignores this count and overflows the buffer. Fix this by checking the address count and bailing out of the loop at the appropriate time. 2016-04-26i40evf: Allow PF driver to configure RSSMitch Williams1-0/+119
If the PF driver reports proper support, allow the PF driver to configure RSS on the behalf of the VF driver. This will allow for RSS support on future hardware without changes to the VF driver. Unfortunately, the old RSS code still needs to stay as the driver needs to be compatible with PF drivers that don't support this interface. But this change still simplifies the data structures a bunch and makes this code simpler to read and maintain. 2016-02-04i40evf: allow channel bonding of VFsMitch Williams1-0/+2
In some modes, bonding would not enslave VF interfaces. This is due to bonding calling change_mtu and the immediately calling open. Because of the asynchronous nature of the admin queue mechanism, the VF returns -EBUSY to the open call, because it knows the previous operation hasn't finished yet. This causes bonding to fail with a less-than-useful error message. To fix this, remove the check for pending operations at the beginning of open. But this introduces a new bug where the driver will panic on a quick close/open cycle. To fix that, we add a new driver state, __I40EVF_DOWN_PENDING, that the driver enters when down is called. The driver finally transitions to a fully DOWN state when it receives confirmation from the PF driver that all the queues are disabled. This allows open to complete even if there is a pending mtu change, and bonding is finally happy. Instead of awkwardly keeping a fixed array of pointers in the adapter struct and then allocating ring structs individually, just keep a single pointer and allocate a single blob for the arrays. This simplifies code, shrinks the adapter structure, and future-proofs the driver by not limiting the number of rings we can handle. 2015-11-25i40evf: handle many MAC filters correctlyMitch Williams1-8/+24
When a lot (many hundreds) of MAC or VLAN filters are added at one time, we can overflow the Admin Queue buffer size with all the requests. Unfortunately, the driver would then calculate the message size incorrectly, causing it to be rejected by the PF. Furthermore, there was no mechanism to trigger another request to allow for configuring the rest of the filters that didn't fit into the first request. To fix this, recalculate the correct buffer size when we detect the overflow condition instead of just assuming the max buffer size. Also, don't clear the request bit in adapter->aq_required when we have an overflow, so that the rest of the filters can be processed later. 2015-10-04i40evf: don't blow away MAC addressMitch Williams1-0/+2
Under certain circumstances, we can get an extra VF_RESOURCES message from the PF driver at runtime. When this happens, we need to parse it because our VSI may have changed out from underneath us, and that will affect our relationship with the PF driver. However, parsing the resources message also blows away our current MAC address in the hardware struct, usually with all zeros. When this happens, the next time the interface is opened, it will have no MAC address and will a) not work and b) complain. Fix this issue by restoring the current MAC address from the netdev struct after we parse the resource message. 2015-07-23i40evf: handle big resetsMitch Williams1-3/+27
The most common type of reset that the VF will encounter is a PF reset that cascades down into a VF reset for each VF. In this case, the VF will always be assigned the same VSI and recovery is fairly simple. However, in the case of 'bigger' resets, such as a Core or EMP reset, when the device is reinitialized, it's probable that the VF will NOT get the same VSI. When this happens, the VF will not be able to recover, as it will continue to request resources for its original VSI. Add an extra state to the admin queue state machine so that the driver can re-request its configuration information at runtime. During reset recovery, set this bit in the aq_required field, and fetch the (possibly new) configuration information before attempting to bring the driver back up. Since the driver doesn't know what kind of reset it has encountered, this step is done even for a PF reset, but it doesn't hurt anything - it just gets the same VSI back. 2015-03-27i40evf: delay releasing ringsMitch Williams1-0/+2
When the VF interface is closed, we cannot immediately free our rings and RX buffers, because the hardware hasn't yet stopped accessing this memory. This shows up as a panic or memory corruption when the device is brought down while under heavy stress. To fix this, delay releasing resources until we receive acknowledgment from the PF driver that the rings have indeed been stopped. Because of this delay, we also need to check to make sure that all of our admin queue requests have been handled before allowing the device to be opened. On some versions of the firmware, the VF admin send queue may become stalled. In this case, the easiest solution is to just place another descriptor on the queue; the firmware will then process both requests. The early init code already accounts for this, but the runtime code does not. In the watchdog task, check for the stall condition, and if it's found, send our API version to the PF. When the PF replies, just ignore the reply. These messages may be triggered during normal init of the driver if the PF or FW take a long time to respond. There's nothing really wrong, so don't freak people out logging messages. If the communication channel really is dead, then we'll retry a few times and give up. This will log a different more scary message that should cause consternation. This allows the user to more easily detect a genuine failure. 2014-12-06i40evf: make early init sequence even more robustMitch Williams1-11/+5
When multiple VFs attempt to initialize simultaneously, the firmware may delay or drop messages. Make the init code more adept at handling these situations by a) reinitializing the admin queue if the firmware fails to process a request, and b) resending a request if the PF doesn't answer. Once the request has been sent again, the PF might end up getting both requests and send the configuration information to the driver twice. This will cause the VF to complain about receiving an unexpected message from the PF. Since this is not fatal, reduce the warning level of the log messages that are generated in response to this event. The vast majority of changes are adding/removing blank lines, aligning function parameters, and correcting over-long lines. 2014-11-21i40e: don't overload fieldsMitch Williams1-6/+5
Overloading the msg_size field in the arq_event_info struct is just a bad idea. It leads to repeated bugs when the structure is used in a loop, since the input value (buffer size) is overwritten by the output value (actual message length). Fix this by splitting the field into two and renaming to indicate the actual function of each field. Since the arq_event struct has now changed, we need to change the drivers to support this. Note that we no longer need to initialize the buffer size each time we go through a loop as this value is no longer destroyed by arq processing. In the process, we also fix a bug in i40evf_verify_api_ver where the buffer size was not correctly reinitialized each time through the loop. In early init, if we get an unexpected message from the PF (such as link status), we just kick an error back to the init task, causing it to restart its state machine and delaying initialization. Make the early init AQ message receive code more robust by handling messages in a loop, and ignoring those that we aren't interested in. This also gets rid of some scary log messages that really didn't indicate a problem. 2014-07-01i40evf: set flags before sending messageMitch Williams1-17/+16
In some circumstances, the firmware could beat us to the punch, and the reply from the PF would come back before we were able to properly modify the aq_pending and aq_required flags. This would mess up the flags and put the driver in an indeterminate state, much like Schrödinger's cat. However, unlike the cat, the driver is definitely dead. To fix this, simply set the flags before sending the request to the AQ. This way, it won't matter if the interrupt comes back too soon. When verifying the API version (which is the first time the driver communicates with the firmware and thus the PF driver), there are many ways in which a failure can occur. There may be an error from the firmware, there may be unresponsive firmware, there may be an error from the PF driver, etc, etc. Make this function return more useful information, instead of just -EIO. Propagate FW errors back to the caller, and log a message if the PF sends an invalid reply.
