2015-02-21net/appletalk: LTPC needs virt_to_busArnd Bergmann1-1/+1
The ltpc driver is rather outdated and does not get built on most platforms because it requires the ISA_DMA_API symbol. However there are some ARM platforms that have ISA_DMA_API but no virt_to_bus, and they get this build error when enabling the ltpc driver. drivers/net/appletalk/ltpc.c: In function 'handlefc': drivers/net/appletalk/ltpc.c:380:2: error: implicit declaration of function 'virt_to_bus' [-Werror=implicit-function-declaration] set_dma_addr(dma,virt_to_bus(ltdmacbuf)); ^ This adds another dependency in Kconfig to avoid that configuration. 2014-10-07net: better IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE supportEric Dumazet1-1/+1
Testing xmit_more support with netperf and connected UDP sockets, I found strange dst refcount false sharing. Current handling of IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE is not optimal. Dropping dst in validate_xmit_skb() is certainly too late in case packet was queued by cpu X but dequeued by cpu Y The logical point to take care of drop/force is in __dev_queue_xmit() before even taking qdisc lock. As Julian Anastasov pointed out, need for skb_dst() might come from some packet schedulers or classifiers. This patch adds new helper to cleanly express needs of various drivers or qdiscs/classifiers. Drivers that need skb_dst() in their ndo_start_xmit() should call following helper in their setup instead of the prior : dev->priv_flags &= ~IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE; -> netif_keep_dst(dev); Instead of using a single bit, we use two bits, one being eventually rebuilt in bonding/team drivers. The other one, is permanent and blocks IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE being rebuilt in bonding/team. Eventually, we could add something smarter later. 2010-10-21BKL: introduce CONFIG_BKL.Arnd Bergmann1-0/+1
With all the patches we have queued in the BKL removal tree, only a few dozen modules are left that actually rely on the BKL, and even there are lots of low-hanging fruit. We need to decide what to do about them, this patch illustrates one of the options: Every user of the BKL is marked as 'depends on BKL' in Kconfig, and the CONFIG_BKL becomes a user-visible option. If it gets disabled, no BKL using module can be built any more and the BKL code itself is compiled out. The one exception is file locking, which is practically always enabled and does a 'select BKL' instead. This effectively forces CONFIG_BKL to be enabled until we have solved the fs/lockd mess and can apply the patch that removes the BKL from fs/locks.c. Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de>

2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo3-2/+2
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2009-05-19net: release dst entry in dev_hard_start_xmit()Eric Dumazet1-0/+1
One point of contention in high network loads is the dst_release() performed when a transmited skb is freed. This is because NIC tx completion calls dev_kree_skb() long after original call to dev_queue_xmit(skb). CPU cache is cold and the atomic op in dst_release() stalls. On SMP, this is quite visible if one CPU is 100% handling softirqs for a network device, since dst_clone() is done by other cpus, involving cache line ping pongs. It seems right place to release dst is in dev_hard_start_xmit(), for most devices but ones that are virtual, and some exceptions. David Miller suggested to define a new device flag, set in alloc_netdev_mq() (so that most devices set it at init time), and carefuly unset in devices which dont want a NULL skb->dst in their ndo_start_xmit(). List of devices that must clear this flag is : - loopback device, because it calls netif_rx() and quoting Patrick : "ip_route_input() doesn't accept loopback addresses, so loopback packets already need to have a dst_entry attached." - appletalk/ipddp.c : needs skb->dst in its xmit function - And all devices that call again dev_queue_xmit() from their xmit function (as some classifiers need skb->dst) : bonding, vlan, macvlan, eql, ifb, hdlc_fr Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <dada1@cosmosbay.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2008-11-13netdevice: safe convert to netdev_priv() #part-1Wang Chen2-7/+11
We have some reasons to kill netdev->priv: 1. netdev->priv is equal to netdev_priv(). 2. netdev_priv() wraps the calculation of netdev->priv's offset, obviously netdev_priv() is more flexible than netdev->priv. But we cann't kill netdev->priv, because so many drivers reference to it directly. This patch is a safe convert for netdev->priv to netdev_priv(netdev). Since all of the netdev->priv is only for read. But it is too big to be sent in one mail. I split it to 4 parts and make every part smaller than 100,000 bytes, which is max size allowed by vger. 2008-04-20drivers/net/appletalk: use time_before, time_before_eq, etcJulia Lawall1-1/+2
The functions time_before, time_before_eq, time_after, and time_after_eq are more robust for comparing jiffies against other values. A simplified version of the semantic patch making this change is as follows: (http://www.emn.fr/x-info/coccinelle/) // <smpl> @ change_compare_np @ expression E; @@ ( - jiffies <= E + time_before_eq(jiffies,E) | - jiffies >= E + time_after_eq(jiffies,E) | - jiffies < E + time_before(jiffies,E) | - jiffies > E + time_after(jiffies,E) ) @ include depends on change_compare_np @ @@ #include <linux/jiffies.h> @ no_include depends on !include && change_compare_np @ @@ #include <linux/...> + #include <linux/jiffies.h> // </smpl> Signed-off-by: Julia Lawall <julia@diku.dk> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: David S. 2007-10-11[NET]: Move hardware header operations out of netdevice.Stephen Hemminger2-29/+1

2007-10-11[NET]: Nuke SET_MODULE_OWNER macro.Ralf Baechle3-5/+0
It's been a useless no-op for long enough in 2.6 so I figured it's time to remove it. The number of people that could object because they're maintaining unified 2.4 and 2.6 drivers is probably rather small. 2007-04-26[SK_BUFF]: Introduce skb_copy_to_linear_data{_offset}Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-1/+1
To clearly state the intent of copying to linear sk_buffs, _offset being a overly long variant but interesting for the sake of saving some bytes. Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@ghostprotocols.net>
