2018-08-03block: Switch struct packet_command to use struct scsi_sense_hdrKees Cook1-5/+6
There is a lot of needless struct request_sense usage in the CDROM code. These can all be struct scsi_sense_hdr instead, to avoid any confusion over their respective structure sizes. This patch is a lot of noise changing "sense" to "sshdr", but the final code is more readable to distinguish between "sense" meaning "struct request_sense" and "sshdr" meaning "struct scsi_sense_hdr". 2018-03-17block: Move SECTOR_SIZE and SECTOR_SHIFT definitions into <linux/blkdev.h>Bart Van Assche1-4/+4
It happens often while I'm preparing a patch for a block driver that I'm wondering: is a definition of SECTOR_SIZE and/or SECTOR_SHIFT available for this driver? Do I have to introduce definitions of these constants before I can use these constants? To avoid this confusion, move the existing definitions of SECTOR_SIZE and SECTOR_SHIFT into the <linux/blkdev.h> header file such that these become available for all block drivers. Make the SECTOR_SIZE definition in the uapi msdos_fs.h header file conditional to avoid that including that header file after <linux/blkdev.h> causes the compiler to complain about a SECTOR_SIZE redefinition. Note: the SECTOR_SIZE / SECTOR_SHIFT / SECTOR_BITS definitions have not been removed from uapi header files nor from NAND drivers in which these constants are used for another purpose than converting block layer offsets and sizes into a number of sectors. The first task acquires the s_umount lock and then the sr_mutex_lock; the second task acquires the sr_mutex_lock and then the s_umount lock. 2017-11-15ide: Make ide_cdrom_prep_fs() initialize the sense buffer pointerBart Van Assche1-2/+1

Hence make sure that that pointer is initialized for filesystem requests. Remove the memset() call that clears .cmd because the scsi_req_init() call in ide_initialize_rq() already initializes the .cmd. 2017-11-07drivers/ide-cd: Handle missing driver data during status check gracefullyBorislav Petkov1-1/+6
The 0day bot reports the below failure which happens occasionally, with their randconfig testing (once every ~100 boots). The Code points at the private pointer ->driver_data being NULL, which hints at a race of sorts where the private driver_data descriptor has disappeared by the time we get to run the workqueue. So let's check that pointer before we continue with issuing the command to the drive. This fix is of the brown paper bag nature but considering that IDE is long deprecated, let's do that so that random testing which happens to enable CONFIG_IDE during randconfig builds, doesn't fail because of this. Besides, failing the TEST_UNIT_READY command because the drive private data is gone is something which we could simply do anyway, to denote that there was a problem communicating with the device. 2017-06-21block: Make most scsi_req_init() calls implicitBart Van Assche1-1/+0
Instead of explicitly calling scsi_req_init() after blk_get_request(), call that function from inside blk_get_request(). Merge the IDE .init_rq_fn() function into .initialize_rq_fn() because it is too small to keep it as a separate function. 2017-06-09block: introduce new block status code typeChristoph Hellwig1-5/+5
Currently we use nornal Linux errno values in the block layer, and while we accept any error a few have overloaded magic meanings. This patch instead introduces a new blk_status_t value that holds block layer specific status codes and explicitly explains their meaning. Helpers to convert from and to the previous special meanings are provided for now, but I suspect we want to get rid of them in the long run - those drivers that have a errno input (e.g. networking) usually get errnos that don't know about the special block layer overloads, and similarly returning them to userspace will usually return somethings that strictly speaking isn't correct for file system operations, but that's left as an exercise for later. For now the set of errors is a very limited set that closely corresponds to the previous overloaded errno values, but there is some low hanging fruite to improve it. blk_status_t (ab)uses the sparse __bitwise annotations to allow for sparse typechecking, so that we can easily catch places passing the wrong values. 2017-02-14cdrom: Make device operations read-onlyKees Cook1-1/+1
Since function tables are a common target for attackers, it's best to keep them in read-only memory. As such, this makes the CDROM device ops tables const. This drops additionally n_minors, since it isn't used meaningfully, and sets the only user of cdrom_dummy_generic_packet explicitly so the variables can all be const. 2017-02-01block: fold cmd_type into the REQ_OP_ spaceChristoph Hellwig1-31/+45
Instead of keeping two levels of indirection for requests types, fold it all into the operations. The little caveat here is that previously cmd_type only applied to struct request, while the request and bio op fields were set to plain REQ_OP_READ/WRITE even for passthrough operations. Instead this patch adds new REQ_OP_* for SCSI passthrough and driver private requests, althought it has to add two for each so that we can communicate the data in/out nature of the request. 2016-10-28block: split out request-only flags into a new namespaceChristoph Hellwig1-23/+23
A lot of the REQ_* flags are only used on struct requests, and only of use to the block layer and a few drivers that dig into struct request internals. This patch adds a new req_flags_t rq_flags field to struct request for them, and thus dramatically shrinks the number of common requests. It also removes the unfortunate situation where we have to fit the fields from the same enum into 32 bits for struct bio and 64 bits for struct request. 2015-11-07mm, page_alloc: rename __GFP_WAIT to __GFP_RECLAIMMel Gorman1-1/+1
__GFP_WAIT was used to signal that the caller was in atomic context and could not sleep. Now it is possible to distinguish between true atomic context and callers that are not willing to sleep. The latter should clear __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM so kswapd will still wake. As clearing __GFP_WAIT behaves differently, there is a risk that people will clear the wrong flags. This patch renames __GFP_WAIT to __GFP_RECLAIM to clearly indicate what it does -- setting it allows all reclaim activity, clearing them prevents it. Disk event code automatically blocks events on excl write. This is primarily to avoid issuing polling commands while burning is in progress. This behavior doesn't fit other types of devices with removeable media where polling commands don't have adverse side effects and door locking usually doesn't exist. This patch introduces new genhd flag which controls the auto-blocking behavior and uses it to enable auto-blocking only on optical devices. 2011-03-09ide: Convert to bdops->check_events()Tejun Heo1-4/+6
Convert ->media_changed() to the new ->check_events() method. The conversion is mostly mechanical. The only notable change is that cdrom now doesn't generate any event if @slot_nr isn't CDSL_CURRENT. It used to return -EINVAL which would be treated as media changed. As media changer isn't supported anyway, this doesn't make any difference. This makes ide emit the standard disk events and allows kernel event polling. Currently, only MEDIA_CHANGE event is implemented. Adding support for EJECT_REQUEST shouldn't be difficult; however, given that ide driver is already deprecated, it probably is best to leave it alone. 2010-08-07block: push down BKL into .open and .releaseArnd Bergmann1-5/+9
The open and release block_device_operations are currently called with the BKL held. In order to change that, we must first make sure that all drivers that currently rely on this have no regressions. This blindly pushes the BKL into all .open and .release operations for all block drivers to prepare for the next step. The drivers can subsequently replace the BKL with their own locks or remove it completely when it can be shown that it is not needed. The functions blkdev_get and blkdev_put are the only remaining users of the big kernel lock in the block layer, besides a few uses in the ioctl code, none of which need to serialize with blkdev_{get,put}. Most of these two functions is also under the protection of bdev->bd_mutex, including the actual calls to ->open and ->release, and the common code does not access any global data structures that need the BKL.
