[ Upstream commit 014a17deb41201449f76df2b20c857a9c3294a7c ] GPIO drivers with latch input support may miss short pulses on input pins even when input latching is enabled. The generic interrupt logic in the pca953x driver reports interrupts by comparing the current input value against the previously sampled one and only signals an event when a level change is observed between two reads. For short pulses, the first edge is captured when the input register is read, but if the signal returns to its previous level before the read, the second edge is not observed. As a result, successive pulses can produce identical input values at read time and no level change is detected, causing interrupts to be missed. The interrupt status is only cleared when the input port is read, and the input value must also be read to determine the triggering edge. If another interrupt occurs on a different line after the status register has been read but before the input register is sampled, that event will not be reflected in the earlier status snapshot, so relying solely on the interrupt status register is also insufficient. Support for input latching and interrupt status handling was previously added by [1], but the interrupt status-based logic was reverted by [2] due to these issues. This patch addresses the original problem by combining both sources of information. Events indicated by the interrupt status register are merged with events detected through the existing level-change logic. As a result: * short pulses, whose second edges are invisible, are detected via the interrupt status register, and * interrupts that occur between the status and input reads are still caught by the generic level-change logic. This significantly improves robustness on devices that signal interrupts as short pulses, while avoiding the issues that led to the earlier reversion. In practice, even if only the first edge of a pulse is observable, the interrupt is reliably detected. This fixes missed interrupts from an Ilitek touch controller with its interrupt line connected to a PCAL6416A, where active-low pulses are approximately 200 us long. Previously, the driver only supported edge-triggered interrupts, which could lead to missed events in scenarios where an interrupt condition persists until it is explicitly cleared. By enabling level-triggered interrupts, the driver can now detect and respond to sustained interrupt conditions more reliably. [ Upstream commit 00aaae60faf554c27c95e93d47f200a93ff266ef ] There are GPIO controllers such as the one present in the LX2160ARDB QIXIS FPGA which have fixed-direction input and output GPIO lines mixed together in a single register. This cannot be modeled using the gpio-regmap as-is since there is no way to present the true direction of a GPIO line. In order to make this use case possible, add a new configuration parameter - fixed_direction_output - into the gpio_regmap_config structure. This will enable user drivers to provide a bitmap that represents the fixed direction of the GPIO lines. Currently if a software-node with GPIO properties ends up as the secondary fwnode then gpiod_find_by_fwnode() will fail to find the GPIOs. Add a new gpiod_fwnode_lookup() helper which falls back to calling gpiod_find_by_fwnode() with the secondary fwnode if the GPIO was not found in the primary fwnode. 2025-06-04gpio: pca953x: fix IRQ storm on system wake upEmanuele Ghidoli1-0/+6
[ Upstream commit 3e38f946062b4845961ab86b726651b4457b2af8 ] If an input changes state during wake-up and is used as an interrupt source, the IRQ handler reads the volatile input register to clear the interrupt mask and deassert the IRQ line. However, the IRQ handler is triggered before access to the register is granted, causing the read operation to fail. As a result, the IRQ handler enters a loop, repeatedly printing the "failed reading register" message, until `pca953x_resume()` is eventually called, which restores the driver context and enables access to registers. Fix by disabling the IRQ line before entering suspend mode, and re-enabling it after the driver context is restored in `pca953x_resume()`. An IRQ can be disabled with disable_irq() and still wake the system as long as the IRQ has wake enabled, so the wake-up functionality is preserved. To prevent race conditions with module unload, a reference needs to be held. Add try_module_get() in these handlers. For new_device_store, this eliminates what appears to be the most dangerous scenario: if an id is allocated from gpio_aggregator_idr but platform_device_register has not yet been called or completed, a concurrent module unload could fail to unregister/delete the device, leaving behind a dangling platform device/GPIO forwarder. [ Upstream commit 57f5db77a915cc29461a679a6bcae7097967be1a ] The settings for all GPIOs are locked by default in bcm_kona_gpio_reset. The settings for a GPIO are unlocked when requesting it as a GPIO, but not when requesting it as an interrupt, causing the IRQ settings to not get applied. Fix this by making sure to unlock the right bits when an IRQ is requested. To avoid a situation where an IRQ being released causes a lock despite the same GPIO being used by a GPIO request or vice versa, add an unlock counter and only lock if it reaches 0. However, due to an oversight the bit that was being written was based on the total GPIO number, not the index of the GPIO within the relevant bank, causing it to fail for any GPIO above 32 (thus any GPIO for banks above bank 0). Fix lock/unlock for these banks by using the correct bit. [ Upstream commit d6179f6c6204f9932aed3a7a2100b4a295dfed9d ] The GPIO drivers with latch interrupt support (typically types starting with PCAL) have interrupt status registers to determine which particular inputs have caused an interrupt. Unfortunately there is no atomic operation to read these registers and clear the interrupt. Clearing the interrupt is done by reading the input registers. The code was reading the interrupt status registers, and then reading the input registers. If an input changed between these two events it was lost. The solution in this patch is to revert to the non-latch version of code, i.e. remembering the previous input status, and looking for the changes. This system results in no more I2C transfers, so is no slower. The latch property of the device still means interrupts will still be noticed if the input changes back to its initial state. [ Upstream commit 9722c3b66e21ff08aec570d02a97d331087fd70f ] The of_property_for_each_u32() macro needs five parameters, two of which are primarily meant as internal variables for the macro itself (in the for() clause). Yet these two parameters are used by a few drivers, and this can be considered misuse or at least bad practice. Now that the kernel uses C11 to build, these two parameters can be avoided by declaring them internally, thus changing this pattern: struct property *prop; const __be32 *p; u32 val; of_property_for_each_u32(np, "xyz", prop, p, val) { ... } to this: u32 val; of_property_for_each_u32(np, "xyz", val) { ... } However two variables cannot be declared in the for clause even with C11, so declare one struct that contain the two variables we actually need. As the variables inside this struct are not meant to be used by users of this macro, give the struct instance the noticeable name "_it" so it is visible during code reviews, helping to avoid new code to use it directly. Most usages are trivially converted as they do not use those two parameters, as expected. The non-trivial cases are: - drivers/clk/clk.c, of_clk_get_parent_name(): easily doable anyway - drivers/clk/clk-si5351.c, si5351_dt_parse(): this is more complex as the checks had to be replicated in a different way, making code more verbose and somewhat uglier, but I refrained from a full rework to keep as much of the original code untouched having no hardware to test my changes All the changes have been build tested. The few for which I have the hardware have been runtime-tested too.
