2024-03-16fbcon: Increase maximum font width x height to 64 x 128Samuel Thibault1-1/+1
By using bitmaps we actually support whatever size we would want, but the console currently limits fonts to 64x128 (which gives 60x16 text on 4k screens), so we don't need more for now, and we can easily increase later. 2023-03-14efi: earlycon: Reprobe after parsing config tablesArd Biesheuvel1-3/+13
Commit 732ea9db9d8a ("efi: libstub: Move screen_info handling to common code") reorganized the earlycon handling so that all architectures pass the screen_info data via a EFI config table instead of populating struct screen_info directly, as the latter is only possible when the EFI stub is baked into the kernel (and not into the decompressor). However, this means that struct screen_info may not have been populated yet by the time the earlycon probe takes place, and this results in a non-functional early console. So let's probe again right after parsing the config tables and populating struct screen_info. Note that this means that earlycon output starts a bit later than before, and so it may fail to capture issues that occur while doing the early EFI initialization. 2023-01-10efi/earlycon: Speed up scrolling by disregarding empty spaceAndy Shevchenko1-2/+26
Currently the scroll copies the full screen which is slow on high resolution displays. At the same time, most of the screen is an empty space which has no need to be copied over and over. Optimize the scrolling algorithm by caching the x coordinates of the last printed lines and scroll in accordance with the maximum x in that cache. On my Microsoft Surface Book (the first version) this produces a significant speedup of the console 90 seconds vs. 168 seconds with the kernel command line having ignore_loglevel earlycon=efifb keep_bootcon Signed-off-by: Andy Shevchenko <andriy.shevchenko@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Ard Biesheuvel <ardb@kernel.org>

2022-12-02efi: earlycon: use console_is_registered()John Ogness1-4/+4
The CON_ENABLED status of a console is a runtime setting that does not involve the console driver. Drivers must not assume that if the console is disabled then proper hardware management is not needed. For the EFI earlycon case, it is about remapping/unmapping memory for the framebuffer. Use console_is_registered() instead of checking CON_ENABLED. 2020-05-12efi/earlycon: Fix early printk for wider fontsDave Young1-6/+8
When I play with terminus fonts I noticed the efi early printk does not work because the earlycon code assumes font width is 8. Here add the code to adapt with larger fonts. Tested with all kinds of kernel built-in fonts on my laptop. Also tested with a local draft patch for 14x28 !bold terminus font. 2019-12-25efi/earlycon: Fix write-combine mapping on x86Arvind Sankar1-9/+7
On x86, until PAT is initialized, WC translates into UC-. Since we calculate and store pgprot_writecombine(PAGE_KERNEL) when earlycon is initialized, this means we actually use UC- mappings instead of WC mappings, which makes scrolling very slow. Instead store a boolean flag to indicate whether we want to use writeback or write-combine mappings, and recalculate the actual pgprot_t we need on every mapping. Once PAT is initialized, we will start using write-combine mappings, which speeds up the scrolling considerably. 2019-12-08efi/earlycon: Remap entire framebuffer after page initializationAndy Shevchenko1-0/+40
When commit: 69c1f396f25b ("efi/x86: Convert x86 EFI earlyprintk into generic earlycon implementation") moved the x86 specific EFI earlyprintk implementation to a shared location, it also tweaked the behaviour. In particular, it dropped a trick with full framebuffer remapping after page initialization, leading to two regressions: 1) very slow scrolling after page initialization, 2) kernel hang when the 'keep_bootcon' command line argument is passed. Putting the tweak back fixes #2 and mitigates #1, i.e., it limits the slow behavior to the early boot stages, presumably due to eliminating heavy map()/unmap() operations per each pixel line on the screen. 2019-02-04efi/x86: Convert x86 EFI earlyprintk into generic earlycon implementationArd Biesheuvel1-0/+206
Move the x86 EFI earlyprintk implementation to a shared location under drivers/firmware and tweak it slightly so we can expose it as an earlycon implementation (which is generic) rather than earlyprintk (which is only implemented for a few architectures) This also involves switching to write-combine mappings by default (which is required on ARM since device mappings lack memory semantics, and so memcpy/memset may not be used on them), and adding support for shared memory framebuffers on cache coherent non-x86 systems (which do not tolerate mismatched attributes). Note that 32-bit ARM does not populate its struct screen_info early enough for earlycon=efifb to work, so it is disabled there.
