2007-07-20mm: Remove slab destructors from kmem_cache_create().Paul Mundt1-2/+2
Slab destructors were no longer supported after Christoph's c59def9f222d44bb7e2f0a559f2906191a0862d7 change. They've been BUGs for both slab and slub, and slob never supported them either. This rips out support for the dtor pointer from kmem_cache_create() completely and fixes up every single callsite in the kernel (there were about 224, not including the slab allocator definitions themselves, or the documentation references). 2007-07-17Freezer: make kernel threads nonfreezable by defaultRafael J. Wysocki2-7/+2
Currently, the freezer treats all tasks as freezable, except for the kernel threads that explicitly set the PF_NOFREEZE flag for themselves. This approach is problematic, since it requires every kernel thread to either set PF_NOFREEZE explicitly, or call try_to_freeze(), even if it doesn't care for the freezing of tasks at all. It seems better to only require the kernel threads that want to or need to be frozen to use some freezer-related code and to remove any freezer-related code from the other (nonfreezable) kernel threads, which is done in this patch. The patch causes all kernel threads to be nonfreezable by default (ie. to have PF_NOFREEZE set by default) and introduces the set_freezable() function that should be called by the freezable kernel threads in order to unset PF_NOFREEZE. It also makes all of the currently freezable kernel threads call set_freezable(), so it shouldn't cause any (intentional) change of behaviour to appear. Additionally, it updates documentation to describe the freezing of tasks more accurately. [akpm@linux-foundation.org: build fixes] Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2007-07-16[SPARC64]: Abstract out mdesc accesses for better MD update handling.David S. Miller1-11/+13
Since we have to be able to handle MD updates, having an in-tree set of data structures representing the MD objects actually makes things more painful. The MD itself is easy to parse, and we can implement the existing interfaces using direct parsing of the MD binary image. The MD is now reference counted, so accesses have to now take the form: handle = mdesc_grab(); ... operations on MD ... mdesc_release(handle); The only remaining issue are cases where code holds on to references to MD property values. mdesc_get_property() returns a direct pointer to the property value, most cases just pull in the information they need and discard the pointer, but there are few that use the pointer directly over a long lifetime. Those will be fixed up in a subsequent changeset. A preliminary handler for MD update events from domain services is there, it is rudimentry but it works and handles all of the reference counting. It does not check the generation number of the MDs, and it does not generate a "add/delete" list for notification to interesting parties about MD changes but that will be forthcoming. 2007-07-16bsg: add a request_queue argument to scsi_cmd_ioctl()FUJITA Tomonori1-1/+1
bsg uses scsi_cmd_ioctl() for some SCSI/sg ioctl commands. scsi_cmd_ioctl() gets a request queue from a gendisk arguement. This prevents bsg being bound to SCSI devices that don't have a gendisk (like OSD). This adds a request_queue argument to scsi_cmd_ioctl(). The SCSI/sg ioctl commands doesn't use a gendisk so it's safe for any SCSI devices to use scsi_cmd_ioctl(). 2007-07-12sysfs: kill unnecessary attribute->ownerTejun Heo1-2/+1
sysfs is now completely out of driver/module lifetime game. After deletion, a sysfs node doesn't access anything outside sysfs proper, so there's no reason to hold onto the attribute owners. Note that often the wrong modules were accounted for as owners leading to accessing removed modules. This patch kills now unnecessary attribute->owner. Note that with this change, userland holding a sysfs node does not prevent the backing module from being unloaded. 2007-05-19cciss: Fix pci_driver.shutdown while device is still activeGerald Britton1-15/+30
Fix an Oops in the cciss driver caused by system shutdown while a filesystem on a cciss device is still active. The cciss_remove_one function only properly removes the device if the device has been cleanly released by its users, which is not the case when the pci_driver.shutdown method is called. This patch adds a new cciss_shutdown function to better match the pattern used by various SCSI drivers: deactivate device interrupts and flush caches. It also alters the cciss_remove_one function to match and readds the __devexit annotation that was removed when cciss_remove_one was serving as the pci_driver.shutdown method. 2007-05-13fix deadlock in loop.cAl Viro1-8/+9
... doh Jeremy Fitzhardinge noted that the recent loop.c cleanups worked, but cause lockdep to complain. Ouch. OK, the deadlock is real and yes, I'm an idiot. Speaking of which, we probably want to s/lock/pin/ in drivers/base/map.c to avoid such brainos again. And yes, this stuff needs clear documentation. Will try to put one together once I get some sleep... 2007-05-09fs: convert core functions to zero_user_pageNate Diller1-5/+1
It's very common for file systems to need to zero part or all of a page, the simplist way is just to use kmap_atomic() and memset(). There's actually a library function in include/linux/highmem.h that does exactly that, but it's confusingly named memclear_highpage_flush(), which is descriptive of *how* it does the work rather than what the *purpose* is. So this patchset renames the function to zero_user_page(), and calls it from the various places that currently open code it. This first patch introduces the new function call, and converts all the core kernel callsites, both the open-coded ones and the old memclear_highpage_flush() ones. Following this patch is a series of conversions for each file system individually, per AKPM, and finally a patch deprecating the old call. The diffstat below shows the entire patchset.
