4 daysKVM: SVM: Bump asid_generation on CPU online to avoid ASID collision after ↵Nikunj A Dadhania1-1/+6
hotplug commit 25f744ffa0c8e799e06250ce2e618367b166b0d4 upstream. If a vCPU stays scheduled out (or blocked) while the last pCPU it ran on goes through a hotplug cycle (online->offline->online), and the vCPU then resumes execution on the same pCPU, then it is possible for it to run with an ASID that has now been assigned to a different vCPU, resulting in stale TLB translations being used. svm_enable_virtualization_cpu() resets asid_generation to 1 and sets next_asid to max_asid + 1 on every CPU online event, including hotplug cycles. Because next_asid starts beyond the pool boundary, the first call to new_asid() after an online event always wraps the pool, incrementing asid_generation to 2 and assigning ASIDs starting from min_asid. Consider two vCPUs from different VMs, vCPU-A pinned to CPU-X holding asid_generation=2 and ASID=N from before the hotplug event: 1. CPU-X goes offline and back online: asid_generation resets to 1, next_asid = max_asid + 1. 2. One or more vCPUs migrate to CPU-X and call new_asid(), wrapping the pool and consuming ASIDs starting from min_asid. Eventually vCPU-B from a different VM is assigned asid_generation=2, ASID=N — the same ASID that vCPU-A held before the hotplug. 3. vCPU-A enters pre_svm_run() on CPU-X: current_vmcb->cpu is unchanged so the migration branch is skipped. Its saved asid_generation=2 matches sd->asid_generation=2, so the generation check silently passes and vCPU-A continues running with ASID=N — the same ASID just freshly assigned to vCPU-B. Both vCPUs from different VMs now run on CPU-X with the same ASID, causing them to share NPT TLB entries and producing stale translations. The collision manifests as a KVM internal error (Suberror: 1, emulation failure). The NPT page fault reports a faulting GPA far outside the VM's physical memory range — a sign of stale TLB translations being used. KVM falls back to instruction emulation, which fails on FPU/XSave instructions (XRSTOR, STMXCSR) that the emulator does not implement. Fix this by incrementing asid_generation instead of resetting it to 1 in svm_enable_virtualization_cpu(). On module load, asid_generation starts at 0 (memset) and the increment produces 1, identical to the old behaviour. On subsequent hotplug cycles the generation advances beyond any value a vCPU previously observed on this CPU, so the generation check in pre_svm_run() reliably forces new_asid() on every vCPU after every hotplug cycle. [ Upstream commit e800decd9c0ac4349bcd8f8f9b29fd21fe93165e ] On Intel platforms with a VMX preemption timer and APICv, if a VMM calls KVM_GET_LAPIC before KVM_GET_MSRS to save the vCPU state, it is possible to lose a pending timer interrupt. If the thread running these ioctls is migrated to another core after calling KVM_GET_LAPIC but before KVM_GET_MSRS and the guest is using their LAPIC timer in TSC-deadline mode, not only does the save LAPIC state not carry the pending interrupt, the TSCDEADLINE MSR will be zeroed. After migration across CPUs, KVM_GET_MSRS calls vcpu_load, posting the interrupt and clearing the MSR: vcpu_load() -> kvm_arch_vcpu_load() -> kvm_lapic_restart_hv_timer() -> start_hv_timer() -> apic_timer_expired() -> kvm_apic_inject_pending_timer_irqs() . post interrupt into the LAPIC state . clear IA32_TSCDEADLINE The saved LAPIC state will be missing the pending interrupt and the saved MSR will be zero. Oops. Fix by only posting an interrupt when we're attempting to enter the guest (vcpu->wants_to_run == true), not for vcpu_load from other paths. [ Upstream commit a6816314af5749cd88944bfdceb270c627cdf348 ] Introduce vcpu->wants_to_run to indicate when a vCPU is in its core run loop, i.e. when the vCPU is running the KVM_RUN ioctl and immediate_exit was not set. Replace all references to vcpu->run->immediate_exit with !vcpu->wants_to_run to avoid TOCTOU races with userspace. For example, a malicious userspace could invoked KVM_RUN with immediate_exit=true and then after KVM reads it to set wants_to_run=false, flip it to false. This would result in the vCPU running in KVM_RUN with wants_to_run=false. This wouldn't cause any real bugs today but is a dangerous landmine. On unmount rmdir_all_sub() unconditionally frees all RMID of all groups, resulting in a double-free of the pseudo-locked group's RMID. The consequence of this is that the original free results in the pseudo-locked group's RMID being added to the rmid_free_lru linked list and the second free then attempts to add the same RMID entry to the rmid_free_lru again. Do not double-free a pseudo-locked group's RMID. Sashiko points out that updating 'orig_x0' after secure_computing() has returned is too late to handle the case where a seccomp filter is re-evaluated after initially returning SECCOMP_RET_TRACE. This means that a tracer can manipulate the first argument of the syscall behind seccomp's back. For now, revert the initial fix and we'll have another crack at it soon. Since the incorrect fix was cc'd to stable, do the same here with an appropriate fixes tag. When seccomp support was originally added to arm64 in a1ae65b21941 ("arm64: add seccomp support"), seccomp was erroneously called _before_ the ptrace syscall-enter-stop and therefore the tracer could trivially manipulate the syscall register state after the seccomp check had passed. This was subsequently fixed in a5cd110cb836 ("arm64/ptrace: run seccomp after ptrace") by moving the seccomp check after the tracer has run. Unfortunately, a decade later, that fix has been reported to be incomplete. On arm64, both the first argument to a syscall and its eventual return value are allocated to register x0. In order to facilitate syscall restarting and querying of syscall arguments on the syscall exit path, the original value of x0 is stashed in 'struct pt_regs::orig_x0' early during the syscall entry path and is returned for the first argument by syscall_get_arguments(). Unlike 32-bit Arm, this stashed value is not directly exposed via ptrace() and so changes to register x0 made by the tracer on a syscall-enter-stop are not reflected in 'orig_x0'. This means that seccomp, syscall tracepoints and audit can observe a stale value for the register compared to the argument that will be observed by the actual syscall. Re-sync 'orig_x0' from x0 on the syscall entry path following a potential ptrace stop (i.e. PTRACE_EVENTMSG_SYSCALL_ENTRY or SECCOMP_RET_TRACE). This behaviour is limited to native tasks (because compat tasks expose 'orig_r0' to ptrace) where the syscall is not being skipped (because x0 is updated to hold the return value of -ENOSYS in that case). KVM RISC-V tracks guest local interrupt state with two bitmaps: - irqs_pending: interrupts that should be visible to the guest - irqs_pending_mask: interrupts whose pending state changed The current code updates those bitmaps with independent atomic bitops and assumes a multiple-producer, single-consumer protocol. That model does not actually hold. kvm_riscv_vcpu_sync_interrupts() is not a pure consumer. When the guest changes guest-visible HVIP state, sync_interrupts() writes both irqs_pending and irqs_pending_mask to reflect the new guest state back into KVM state. As a result, irqs_pending and irqs_pending_mask form a single logical state transition, but they are not updated atomically as a pair. This allows a race where a newly injected interrupt is lost. For example: CPU0 CPU1 ---- ---- kvm_riscv_vcpu_set_interrupt(VS_SOFT) set_bit(VS_SOFT, irqs_pending) kvm_riscv_vcpu_sync_interrupts() sees guest-cleared HVIP.VSSIP sets irqs_pending_mask clear_bit(IRQ_VS_SOFT, irqs_pending) set_bit(VS_SOFT, irqs_pending_mask) kvm_vcpu_kick() After that interleaving, a later flush can update HVIP without VSSIP even though a new virtual interrupt was injected. In practice, the guest can remain blocked in WFI with work pending. The same pending/mask protocol is shared by VS soft interrupts, PMU overflow delivery, and AIA high interrupt synchronization, so the race is not limited to one interrupt source. Fix this by serializing all updates to irqs_pending and irqs_pending_mask with a per-vCPU raw spinlock. This keeps the pending bit and the dirty mask as one state transition across: - set/unset interrupt - guest HVIP sync - interrupt flush to guest CSR state - vCPU reset - AIA CSR writes that clear dirty state Use non-atomic bitmap operations while holding the lock. Hold the lock across the AIA sync, flush, and pending checks as well, so both bitmap words share the same serialization domain. This intentionally replaces the existing lockless protocol instead of trying to repair it with additional barriers. The problem is not memory ordering on a single field; it is that two separate bitmaps encode one shared state machine while both producers and sync paths can modify them. A per-vCPU raw spinlock keeps the fix small, local, and suitable for backporting. It was more visible after recent code simplifications around cpustats. Sum of system time of all CPUs can't be more than 19400*240 4656000. In fact huge value is close to mftb(). Note mftb doesn't reset on powerVM when the LPAR restart. It only resets when whole system resets. The same issue exists for kexec too. This happens since starttime is not setup at init time. Once it is set then subsequent vtime_delta will return the right delta. Fix it by initializing the starttime during CPU initialization. [ Upstream commit c8ba971cf8567d49eb5f43ee90c4e50424331c18 ] Currently the tick subsystem stores the idle cputime accounting in private fields, allowing cohabitation with architecture idle vtime accounting. The former is fetched on online CPUs, the latter on offline CPUs. For consolidation purpose, architecture vtime accounting will continue to account the cputime but will make a break when the idle tick is stopped. The dyntick cputime accounting will then be relayed by the tick subsystem so that the idle cputime is still seen advancing coherently even when the tick isn't there to flush the idle vtime. Prepare for that and introduce three new APIs which will be used in subsequent patches: - vtime_dynticks_start() is deemed to be called when idle enters in dyntick mode. The idle cputime that elapsed so far is accumulated. - vtime_dynticks_stop() is deemed to be called when idle exits from dyntick mode. The vtime entry clocks are fast-forward to current time so that idle accounting restarts elapsing from now. - vtime_reset() is deemed to be called from dynticks idle IRQ entry to fast-forward the clock to current time so that the IRQ time is still accounted by vtime while nohz cputime is paused. Also accumulated vtime won't be flushed from dyntick-idle ticks to avoid accounting twice the idle cputime, along with nohz accounting. Further, arch_vtime_task_switch() is implemented for 32-bit PowerPC architecture only and vtime_task_switch() generic variant is rather superfluous. Simplify the whole vtime_task_switch() wiring by moving the existing generic implementation to PowerPC. commit 52f2f7c30126037975389aa04d24c506a5177c35 upstream. mmu_destroy_caches() destroys pte_list_desc_cache and mmu_page_header_cache, but leaves both pointers unchanged. The pointers live in kvm.ko, and therefore survive when a vendor module is unloaded while kvm.ko remains loaded. If creation of pte_list_desc_cache fails during a subsequent vendor module load, its assignment sets pte_list_desc_cache to NULL and the error path calls mmu_destroy_caches(). mmu_page_header_cache still points to the cache destroyed during the preceding vendor module unload. Passing that stale pointer to kmem_cache_destroy() causes a slab use-after-free. Reproduce the issue on a v7.1.3 kernel with CONFIG_KASAN=y, CONFIG_KASAN_GENERIC=y, CONFIG_KVM=m, and CONFIG_KVM_INTEL=m. A one-shot test hook forces pte_list_desc_cache to NULL on the second invocation of kvm_mmu_vendor_module_init(): 1. Load kvm.ko and kvm-intel.ko, creating both caches. 2. commit 2abd5287f08319fa35764566b15c6e22cb1068db upstream. Check for a "stale" page fault, i.e. for an invalid and/or obsolete root, after making MMU pages available for the shadow MMU. If reclaiming shadow pages zaps an in-use root, i.e. marks it invalid, then KVM will attempt to map memory into an invalid root. On its own, populating an invalid root is "fine", but because child shadow pages inherit their parent's role, any children created during the map/fetch will be created as invalid pages, thus violating KVM's invariant that invalid pages are never on the list of active MMU pages. Note, the underlying flaw has existed since KVM first started tracking invalid roots in 2008 (commit 2e53d63acba7, "KVM: MMU: ignore zapped root pagetables"), but the true badness only came along in 2020 (Linux 5.9) with the invariant that invalid shadow pages can't be on the list of active pages. Note #2, inheriting role.invalid when creating child shadow pages is also far from ideal; that flaw will be addressed separately. This can cause a lifetime issue if the matched device is not the expected type, as by the time the caller can introspect the object, it might be gone (the srcu lock having been dropped). Given that there is only a single user of this helper, the simplest option is to move the locking responsibility to the caller, which can keep the srcu lock held for as long as it wants. Note that this aligns with other kvm_io_bus*() helpers, which already require the srcu lock to be held by the callers. Extend the software filter to also validate the branch-from address, so that any branch record whose branch-from address is in the kernel is dropped when PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_USER is requested. When hardware page table walker (PTW) is enabled on LoongArch, the CPU may set _PAGE_DIRTY directly in the page table entry during a write TLB miss, without going through the software TLB store handler. The software TLB store handler (tlbex.S:254) sets both _PAGE_DIRTY and_PAGE_MODIFIED together: ori t0, t0, (_PAGE_VALID | _PAGE_DIRTY | _PAGE_MODIFIED) Since hardware PTW only sets _PAGE_DIRTY, the software-only bit, i.e. _PAGE_MODIFIED is left unchanged. This creates a window where a PTE has _PAGE_DIRTY set (hardware knows the page is dirty) but _PAGE_MODIFIED clear (software is unaware). When fork()/clone() triggers copy-on-write, __copy_present_ptes() calls pte_wrprotect(), which unconditionally clears both the _PAGE_WRITE and _PAGE_DIRTY bits: pte_val(pte) &= ~(_PAGE_WRITE | _PAGE_DIRTY); Since _PAGE_MODIFIED was never set, the dirtiness information is lost completely. Subsequently, when memory pressure triggers page reclaim, page_mkclean() / try_to_unmap() sees the page as clean (i.e. pte_dirty() returns false) and the page may be freed without writeback, causing data corruption. Fix this by propagating the _PAGE_DIRTY bit to the _PAGE_MODIFIED bit in both pte_wrprotect() and pmd_wrprotect() before clearing writeable bits: if (pte_val(pte) & _PAGE_DIRTY) pte_val(pte) |= _PAGE_MODIFIED; The pmd_wrprotect() fix handles the CONFIG_TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE case, where pmd entries need the same treatment. This ensures the software dirty tracking bit (checked by pte_dirty() and pmd_dirty(), which read both the _PAGE_DIRTY and _PAGE_MODIFIED bits) is preserved across fork COW write-protection. The issue was found by the LTP madvise09 test case, which exercises page reclaim after "madvise(MADV_FREE), write and fork" operation sequence on private anonymous mappings. Consequently, sizeof(new_mask) evaluates to the pointer size, causing copy_from_user() to clobber the mask pointer. Furthermore, the old logic performed copy_from_user() before allocating the mask. Fix this by allocating new_mask first. To handle variable-sized user masks correctly, use cpumask_size() to truncate overly large user masks or pad undersized masks with zeros before copying the data directly into the allocated buffer. In 64-bit configurations calling any firmware entry points from a kernel thread other than the initial one will result in a situation where the stack has been placed in the XKPHYS 64-bit memory segment. Consequently the stack pointer is no longer a 32-bit value and when the 32-bit firmware code called uses 32-bit ALU operations to manipulate the stack pointer, the calculated result is incorrect (in fact in the 64-bit MIPS ISA almost all 32-bit ALU operations will produce an unpredictable result when executed on 64-bit data) and control goes astray. This may happen when no final console driver has been enabled in the configuration and consequently the initial console continues being used late into bootstrap, or with an upcoming change that will switch the zs driver to use a platform device, which in turn will make the console handover happen only after other kernel threads have already been started, and the kernel will hang at: pid_max: default: 32768 minimum: 301 or somewhat later, but always before: cblist_init_generic: Setting adjustable number of callback queues. has been printed. It seems that only the prom_printf() entry point is affected. Of all the other entry points wired only rex_slot_address() and rex_gettcinfo() are called from a kernel thread other than the initial one, specifically kernel_init(), and they are leaf functions that do no business with the stack, having worked with no issue ever since 64-bit support was added for the platform back in 2002. To address this issue then, arrange for the stack to be switched in the o32 wrapper as required for prom_printf() only, by supplying call_o32() with a pointer to a chunk of initdata space, which is placed in the CKSEG0 32-bit compatibility segment, observing that prom_printf() is only called from console output handler and therefore with the console lock held, implying no need for this code to be reentrant. Other firmware entry points may be called with interrupts enabled and no lock held, and may therefore require that call_o32() be reentrant. commit 0074b82cdfcb5fd13710a0ac308ade68ac6f6fbe upstream. vgic_prune_ap_list() drops both ap_list_lock and irq_lock while migrating an interrupt to another vCPU. After reacquiring the locks it only checks that the affinity is unchanged (target_vcpu == vgic_target_oracle(irq)) before moving the interrupt, which assumes that an interrupt whose affinity is preserved is still queued on this vCPU's ap_list. That assumption no longer holds if the interrupt is taken off the ap_list while the locks are dropped. vgic_flush_pending_lpis() removes the interrupt from the list and sets irq->vcpu to NULL, but leaves enabled/pending/target_vcpu untouched. As the interrupt is still enabled and pending, vgic_target_oracle() returns the same target_vcpu, so the affinity check passes and list_del() is run a second time on an entry that has already been removed. Also check that the interrupt is still assigned to this vCPU (irq->vcpu == vcpu) before moving it. commit ae24f6b06e90681ec36b9c21c3f5c09618350f5a upstream. The sve_save_state() and sve_load_state() functions take a 32-bit int argument that describes whether to save/restore the FFR. Their assembly implementations consume the entire 64-bit register containing this 32-bit value, and will attempt to save/restore the FFR if any bit of that 64-bit register is non-zero. Per the AAPCS64 parameter passing rules, the callee is responsible for any necessary widening, and the upper 32-bits are permitted to contain arbitrary values. If the upper 32 bits are non-zero, this could result in an unexpected attempt to save/restore the FFR, and consequently could lead to unexpected traps/undefs/faults. In practice compilers are very unlikely to generate code where the upper 32-bits would be non-zero, but they are permitted to do so. Fix this by only consuming the low 32 bits of the register, and update comments accordingly. The hyp code __sve_save_state() and __sve_restore_state() functions don't have the same latent bug as they override the full 64-bit register containing the argument. Since set_pte_at() is a generic macro, there will be no equivalent __set_pte_at() to reroute to. Note that a couple of calls to set_pte_at() remain in the arch code. This is intentional, since those call sites are acting on behalf of core-mm and should continue to call into the public set_ptes() rather than the arch-private __set_ptes(). For non-compat AArch64 watchpoints the offset is unbounded relative to ctrl.len: a perf_event_open(PERF_TYPE_BREAKPOINT) caller asking for HW_BREAKPOINT_W with bp_addr=page+1 and bp_len=HW_BREAKPOINT_LEN_8 ends up with 0xff << 1 = 0x1fe, stored as 0xfe. The kernel programs WCR.BAS=0xfe and the hardware watches bytes [1..7] instead of the requested [1..8] -- the eighth byte is silently dropped. The syscall still returns success, leaving userspace to discover the gap by empirical probing. The same class affects HW_BREAKPOINT_LEN_{2,4} when offset pushes the high BAS bit past bit 7 (e.g. LEN_4 with offset=5 yields 0xe0 instead of 0x1e0). No memory-safety impact -- the value is masked into 8 bits before encoding -- but debuggers and perf users observe missed events on bytes they thought they were watching. The AArch32 branch immediately above already rejects unrepresentable (offset, len) combinations via an explicit switch. Mirror that for the non-compat branch by checking that the shifted pattern fits in the BAS field, returning -EINVAL when it does not. GDB and similar debuggers are unaffected by the stricter check. aarch64_linux_set_debug_regs() already treats EINVAL on NT_ARM_HW_WATCH as a downgrade signal: it clears kernel_supports_any_contiguous_range, calls aarch64_downgrade_regs() to round the BAS up to a legacy 0x01/03/0f/ff mask with an aligned base, and retries -- the same fallback path that PR-20207 introduced. The new -EINVAL is therefore reachable only from a raw perf_event_open() that pairs an unaligned base with an oversized bp_len, which is precisely the bug. [ Upstream commit 7eb475e8a738ee6fd1260aa59ddccb610fdd4300 ] led_proc_write() duplicates up to LED_MAX_LENGTH bytes with memdup_user_nul() and then unconditionally inspects buf[count - 1] to strip a trailing newline. A zero-length write therefore reads one byte before the duplicated buffer. The previous version rejected empty writes, but empty input already falls through to the existing default case and turns the LED off like any other unrecognized string.
