2010-03-13xtensa: use generic ptrace_resume codeChristoph Hellwig2-45/+12
Use the generic ptrace_resume code for PTRACE_SYSCALL, PTRACE_CONT, PTRACE_KILL and PTRACE_SINGLESTEP. This implies defining arch_has_single_step in <asm/ptrace.h> and implementing the user_enable_single_step and user_disable_single_step functions, which also causes the breakpoint information to be cleared on fork, which could be considered a bug fix. Also the TIF_SYSCALL_TRACE thread flag is now cleared on PTRACE_KILL which it previously wasn't which is consistent with all architectures using the modern ptrace code. 2010-02-20MM: Pass a PTE pointer to update_mmu_cache() rather than the PTE itselfRussell King2-3/+3
On VIVT ARM, when we have multiple shared mappings of the same file in the same MM, we need to ensure that we have coherency across all copies. We do this via make_coherent() by making the pages uncacheable. This used to work fine, until we allowed highmem with highpte - we now have a page table which is mapped as required, and is not available for modification via update_mmu_cache(). Ralf Beache suggested getting rid of the PTE value passed to update_mmu_cache(): On MIPS update_mmu_cache() calls __update_tlb() which walks pagetables to construct a pointer to the pte again. Passing a pte_t * is much more elegant. Maybe we might even replace the pte argument with the pte_t? Ben Herrenschmidt would also like the pte pointer for PowerPC: Passing the ptep in there is exactly what I want. I want that -instead- of the PTE value, because I have issue on some ppc cases, for I$/D$ coherency, where set_pte_at() may decide to mask out the _PAGE_EXEC. So, pass in the mapped page table pointer into update_mmu_cache(), and remove the PTE value, updating all implementations and call sites to suit. 2009-11-26block: add helpers to run flush_dcache_page() against a bio and a request's ↵Ilya Loginov1-0/+1
pages Mtdblock driver doesn't call flush_dcache_page for pages in request. So, this causes problems on architectures where the icache doesn't fill from the dcache or with dcache aliases. The patch fixes this. The ARCH_IMPLEMENTS_FLUSH_DCACHE_PAGE symbol was introduced to avoid pointless empty cache-thrashing loops on architectures for which flush_dcache_page() is a no-op. Every architecture was provided with this flush pages on architectires where ARCH_IMPLEMENTS_FLUSH_DCACHE_PAGE is equal 1 or do nothing otherwise. 2009-10-13net: Introduce recvmmsg socket syscallArnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-1/+3
Meaning receive multiple messages, reducing the number of syscalls and net stack entry/exit operations. Next patches will introduce mechanisms where protocols that want to optimize this operation will provide an unlocked_recvmsg operation. This takes into account comments made by: . Paul Moore: sock_recvmsg is called only for the first datagram, sock_recvmsg_nosec is used for the rest. . Caitlin Bestler: recvmmsg now has a struct timespec timeout, that works in the same fashion as the ppoll one. If the underlying protocol returns a datagram with MSG_OOB set, this will make recvmmsg return right away with as many datagrams (+ the OOB one) it has received so far. . Rémi Denis-Courmont & Steven Whitehouse: If we receive N < vlen datagrams and then recvmsg returns an error, recvmmsg will return the successfully received datagrams, store the error and return it in the next call. This paves the way for a subsequent optimization, sk_prot->unlocked_recvmsg, where we will be able to acquire the lock only at batch start and end, not at every underlying recvmsg call. 2009-10-13net: Generalize socket rx gap / receive queue overflow cmsgNeil Horman1-0/+2
Create a new socket level option to report number of queue overflows Recently I augmented the AF_PACKET protocol to report the number of frames lost on the socket receive queue between any two enqueued frames. This value was exported via a SOL_PACKET level cmsg. AFter I completed that work it was requested that this feature be generalized so that any datagram oriented socket could make use of this option. As such I've created this patch, It creates a new SOL_SOCKET level option called SO_RXQ_OVFL, which when enabled exports a SOL_SOCKET level cmsg that reports the nubmer of times the sk_receive_queue overflowed between any two given frames. It also augments the AF_PACKET protocol to take advantage of this new feature (as it previously did not touch sk->sk_drops, which this patch uses to record the overflow count). Tested successfully by me. Notes: 1) Unlike my previous patch, this patch simply records the sk_drops value, which is not a number of drops between packets, but rather a total number of drops. Deltas must be computed in user space. 2) While this patch currently works with datagram oriented protocols, it will also be accepted by non-datagram oriented protocols. I'm not sure if thats agreeable to everyone, but my argument in favor of doing so is that, for those protocols which aren't applicable to this option, sk_drops will always be zero, and reporting no drops on a receive queue that isn't used for those non-participating protocols seems reasonable to me. This also saves us having to code in a per-protocol opt in mechanism. 3) This applies cleanly to net-next assuming that commit 977750076d98c7ff6cbda51858bb5a5894a9d9ab (my af packet cmsg patch) is reverted Signed-off-by: Neil Horman <nhorman@tuxdriver.com> Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2009-09-22mm: add MAP_HUGETLB for mmaping pseudo-anonymous huge page regionsArnd Bergmann1-0/+2
Add a flag for mmap that will be used to request a huge page region that will look like anonymous memory to user space. This is accomplished by using a file on the internal vfsmount. MAP_HUGETLB is a modifier of MAP_ANONYMOUS and so must be specified with it. The region will behave the same as a MAP_ANONYMOUS region using small pages. The patch also adds the MAP_STACK flag, which was previously defined only on some architectures but not on others. Since MAP_STACK is meant to be a hint only, architectures can define it without assigning a specific meaning to it. 2009-09-22ksm: define MADV_MERGEABLE and MADV_UNMERGEABLEHugh Dickins1-0/+3
The out-of-tree KSM used ioctls on fds cloned from /dev/ksm to register a memory area for merging: we prefer now to use an madvise(2) interface. This patch just defines MADV_MERGEABLE (to tell KSM it may merge pages in this area found identical to pages in other mergeable areas) and MADV_UNMERGEABLE (to undo that). 2009-09-20arm, cris, mips, sparc, powerpc, um, xtensa: fix build with bash 4.0Sam Ravnborg1-1/+2
Albin Tonnerre <albin.tonnerre@free-electrons.com> reported: Bash 4 filters out variables which contain a dot in them. This happends to be the case of CPPFLAGS_vmlinux.lds. This is rather unfortunate, as it now causes build failures when using SHELL=/bin/bash to compile, or when bash happens to be used by make (eg when it's /bin/sh) Remove the common definition of CPPFLAGS_vmlinux.lds by pushing relevant stuff to either Makefile.build or the arch specific kernel/Makefile where we build the linker script. This is also nice cleanup as we move the information out where it is used. Notes for the different architectures touched: arm - we use an already exported symbol cris - we use a config symbol aleady available [Not build tested] mips - the jiffies complexity has moved to vmlinux.lds.S where we need it. Added a few variables to CPPFLAGS - they are only used by the linker script. [Not build tested] powerpc - removed assignment that is not needed [not build tested] sparc - simplified it using $(BITS) um - introduced a few new exported variables to deal with this xtensa - added options to CPP invocation [not build tested] Cc: Albin Tonnerre <albin.tonnerre@free-electrons.com> Cc: Russell King <linux@arm.linux.org.uk> Cc: Mikael Starvik <starvik@axis.com> Cc: Jesper Nilsson <jesper.nilsson@axis.com> Cc: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org> Cc: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Cc: "David S. 2009-08-06net: implement a SO_DOMAIN getsockoptionJan Engelhardt1-0/+1
This sockopt goes in line with SO_TYPE and SO_PROTOCOL. It makes it possible for userspace programs to pass around file descriptors — I am referring to arguments-to-functions, but it may even work for the fd passing over UNIX sockets — without needing to also pass the auxiliary information (PF_INET6/IPPROTO_TCP). 2009-08-06net: implement a SO_PROTOCOL getsockoptionJan Engelhardt1-0/+2
Similar to SO_TYPE returning the socket type, SO_PROTOCOL allows to retrieve the protocol used with a given socket. I am not quite sure why we have that-many copies of socket.h, and why the values are not the same on all arches either, but for where hex numbers dominate, I use 0x1029 for SO_PROTOCOL as that seems to be the next free unused number across a bunch of operating systems, or so Google results make me want to believe. SO_PROTOCOL for others just uses the next free Linux number, 38. Signed-off-by: Jan Engelhardt <jengelh@medozas.de> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2009-07-27mm: Pass virtual address to [__]p{te,ud,md}_free_tlb()Benjamin Herrenschmidt1-1/+1
mm: Pass virtual address to [__]p{te,ud,md}_free_tlb() Upcoming paches to support the new 64-bit "BookE" powerpc architecture will need to have the virtual address corresponding to PTE page when freeing it, due to the way the HW table walker works. Basically, the TLB can be loaded with "large" pages that cover the whole virtual space (well, sort-of, half of it actually) represented by a PTE page, and which contain an "indirect" bit indicating that this TLB entry RPN points to an array of PTEs from which the TLB can then create direct entries. Thus, in order to invalidate those when PTE pages are deleted, we need the virtual address to pass to tlbilx or tlbivax instructions. The old trick of sticking it somewhere in the PTE page struct page sucks too much, the address is almost readily available in all call sites and almost everybody implemets these as macros, so we may as well add the argument everywhere. I added it to the pmd and pud variants for consistency. Pull the initial preempt_count value into a single definition site. Maintainers for: alpha, ia64 and m68k, please have a look, your arch code is funny. The header magic is a bit odd, but similar to the KERNEL_DS one, CPP waits with expanding these macros until the INIT_THREAD_INFO macro itself is expanded, which is in arch/*/kernel/init_task.c where we've already included sched.h so we're good. 2009-07-09linker script: unify usage of discard definitionTejun Heo1-10/+4
Discarded sections in different archs share some commonality but have considerable differences. This led to linker script for each arch implementing its own /DISCARD/ definition, which makes maintaining tedious and adding new entries error-prone. This patch makes all linker scripts to move discard definitions to the end of the linker script and use the common DISCARDS macro. As ld uses the first matching section definition, archs can include default discarded sections by including them earlier in the linker script. ia64 is notable because it first throws away some ia64 specific subsections and then include the rest of the sections into the final image, so those sections must be discarded before the inclusion. defconfig compile tested for x86, x86-64, powerpc, powerpc64, ia64, alpha, sparc, sparc64 and s390.
