2017-10-10locking/arch: Remove dummy arch_{read,spin,write}_lock_flags() implementationsWill Deacon2-8/+0
The arch_{read,spin,write}_lock_flags() macros are simply mapped to the non-flags versions by the majority of architectures, so do this in core code and remove the dummy implementations. Also remove the implementation in spinlock_up.h, since all callers of do_raw_spin_lock_flags() call local_irq_save(flags) anyway. 2017-10-10locking/arch: Remove dummy arch_{read,spin,write}_relax() implementationsWill Deacon2-8/+0
arch_{read,spin,write}_relax() are defined as cpu_relax() by the core code, so architectures that can't do better (i.e. most of them) don't need to bother with the dummy definitions. 2017-10-10locking/core: Remove {read,spin,write}_can_lock()Will Deacon2-24/+0
Outside of the locking code itself, {read,spin,write}_can_lock() have no users in tree. Apparmor (the last remaining user of write_can_lock()) got moved over to lockdep by the previous patch. This patch removes the use of {read,spin,write}_can_lock() from the BUILD_LOCK_OPS macro, deferring to the trylock operation for testing the lock status, and subsequently removes the unused macros altogether. They aren't guaranteed to work in a concurrent environment and can give incorrect results in the case of qrwlock. 2017-10-04sh: sh7757: remove nonexistent GPIO_PT[JLNQ]7_RESV to fix pinctrl registrationGeert Uytterhoeven1-4/+4
Commit 3810e96056ff ("sh: modify pinmux for SH7757 2nd cut") renamed GPIO_PT[JLNQ]7 to GPIO_PT[JLNQ]7_RESV, and removed the existing users from the pinmux_pins[] array. However, pinmux_pins[] is initialized through PINMUX_GPIO(), using designated array initializers, where the GPIO_* enums serve as indices. Hence entries were not really removed, but replaced by (zero-filled) holes. Such entries are treated as pin zero, which was registered before, thus leading to pinctrl registration failures, as seen on sh7722: sh-pfc pfc-sh7722: pin 0 already registered sh-pfc pfc-sh7722: error during pin registration sh-pfc pfc-sh7722: could not register: -22 sh-pfc: probe of pfc-sh7722 failed with error -22 Remove GPIO_PT[JLNQ]7_RESV from the enum to fix this. 2017-10-04sh: sh7722: remove nonexistent GPIO_PTQ7 to fix pinctrl registrationGeert Uytterhoeven1-1/+1
Patch series "sh: sh7722/sh7757i/sh7264/sh7269: Fix pinctrl registration", v2. Magnus Damm reported that on sh7722/Migo-R, pinctrl registration fails with: sh-pfc pfc-sh7722: pin 0 already registered sh-pfc pfc-sh7722: error during pin registration sh-pfc pfc-sh7722: could not register: -22 sh-pfc: probe of pfc-sh7722 failed with error -22 pinmux_pins[] is initialized through PINMUX_GPIO(), using designated array initializers, where the GPIO_* enums serve as indices. Apparently GPIO_PTQ7 was defined in the enum, but never used. If enum values are defined, but never used, pinmux_pins[] contains (zero-filled) holes. Hence such entries are treated as pin zero, which was registered before, and pinctrl registration fails. I can't see how this ever worked, as at the time of commit f5e25ae52fef ("sh-pfc: Add sh7722 pinmux support"), pinmux_gpios[] in drivers/pinctrl/sh-pfc/pfc-sh7722.c already had the hole, and drivers/pinctrl/core.c already had the check. Some scripting revealed a few more broken drivers: - sh7757 has four holes, due to nonexistent GPIO_PT[JLNQ]7_RESV. - sh7264 and sh7269 define GPIO_PH[0-7], but don't use it with PINMUX_GPIO(). Patch 1 fixes the issue on sh7722, and was tested. Patches 3-4 should fix the issue on the other 3 SoCs, but was untested due to lack of hardware. This patch (of 4): On sh7722/Migo-R, pinctrl registration fails with: sh-pfc pfc-sh7722: pin 0 already registered sh-pfc pfc-sh7722: error during pin registration sh-pfc pfc-sh7722: could not register: -22 sh-pfc: probe of pfc-sh7722 failed with error -22 pinmux_pins[] is initialized through PINMUX_GPIO(), using designated array initializers, where the GPIO_* enums serve as indices. As GPIO_PTQ7 is defined in the enum, but never used, pinmux_pins[] contains a (zero-filled) hole. Hence this entry is treated as pin zero, which was registered before, and pinctrl registration fails. According to the datasheet, port PTQ7 does not exist. Hence remove GPIO_PTQ7 from the enum to fix this. 2017-08-25futex: Remove duplicated code and fix undefined behaviourJiri Slaby1-22/+4
There is code duplicated over all architecture's headers for futex_atomic_op_inuser. Namely op decoding, access_ok check for uaddr, and comparison of the result. Remove this duplication and leave up to the arches only the needed assembly which is now in arch_futex_atomic_op_inuser. This effectively distributes the Will Deacon's arm64 fix for undefined behaviour reported by UBSAN to all architectures. The fix was done in commit 5f16a046f8e1 (arm64: futex: Fix undefined behaviour with FUTEX_OP_OPARG_SHIFT usage). Look there for an example dump. And as suggested by Thomas, check for negative oparg too, because it was also reported to cause undefined behaviour report. Note that s390 removed access_ok check in d12a29703 ("s390/uaccess: remove pointless access_ok() checks") as access_ok there returns true. We introduce it back to the helper for the sake of simplicity (it gets optimized away anyway). 2017-08-11mm: fix MADV_[FREE|DONTNEED] TLB flush miss problemMinchan Kim1-2/+2
Nadav reported parallel MADV_DONTNEED on same range has a stale TLB problem and Mel fixed it[1] and found same problem on MADV_FREE[2]. Quote from Mel Gorman: "The race in question is CPU 0 running madv_free and updating some PTEs while CPU 1 is also running madv_free and looking at the same PTEs. CPU 1 may have writable TLB entries for a page but fail the pte_dirty check (because CPU 0 has updated it already) and potentially fail to flush. Hence, when madv_free on CPU 1 returns, there are still potentially writable TLB entries and the underlying PTE is still present so that a subsequent write does not necessarily propagate the dirty bit to the underlying PTE any more. Reclaim at some unknown time at the future may then see that the PTE is still clean and discard the page even though a write has happened in the meantime. I think this is possible but I could have missed some protection in madv_free that prevents it happening." This patch aims for solving both problems all at once and is ready for other problem with KSM, MADV_FREE and soft-dirty story[3]. TLB batch API(tlb_[gather|finish]_mmu] uses [inc|dec]_tlb_flush_pending and mmu_tlb_flush_pending so that when tlb_finish_mmu is called, we can catch there are parallel threads going on. In that case, forcefully, flush TLB to prevent for user to access memory via stale TLB entry although it fail to gather page table entry. I confirmed this patch works with [4] test program Nadav gave so this patch supersedes "mm: Always flush VMA ranges affected by zap_page_range v2" in current mmotm. NOTE: This patch modifies arch-specific TLB gathering interface(x86, ia64, s390, sh, um). It seems most of architecture are straightforward but s390 need to be careful because tlb_flush_mmu works only if mm->context.flush_mm is set to non-zero which happens only a pte entry really is cleared by ptep_get_and_clear and friends. However, this problem never changes the pte entries but need to flush to prevent memory access from stale tlb. This patch is a preparatory patch for solving race problems caused by TLB batch. For that, we will increase/decrease TLB flush pending count of mm_struct whenever tlb_[gather|finish]_mmu is called. Before making it simple, this patch separates architecture specific part and rename it to arch_tlb_[gather|finish]_mmu and generic part just calls it. It shouldn't change any behavior. Mike Galbraith reported a situation where a WARN_ON_ONCE() call in DRM code turned into an oops. As it turns out, WARN_ON_ONCE() seems to be completely broken when called from a module. The bug was introduced with the following commit: 19d436268dde ("debug: Add _ONCE() logic to report_bug()") That commit changed WARN_ON_ONCE() to move its 'once' logic into the bug trap handler. It requires a writable bug table so that the BUGFLAG_DONE bit can be written to the flags to indicate the first warning has occurred. The bug table was made writable for vmlinux, which relies on vmlinux.lds.S and vmlinux.lds.h for laying out the sections. However, it wasn't made writable for modules, which rely on the ELF section header flags. Since commit fcc8487d477a ("uapi: export all headers under uapi directories"), all (and only) headers under uapi directories are exported, but asm-generic wrappers are still exceptions. When opening the slave end of a PTY, it is not possible for userspace to safely ensure that /dev/pts/$num is actually a slave (in cases where the mount namespace in which devpts was mounted is controlled by an untrusted process). In addition, there are several unresolvable race conditions if userspace were to attempt to detect attacks through stat(2) and other similar methods [in addition it is not clear how userspace could detect attacks involving FUSE]. Resolve this by providing an interface for userpace to safely open the "peer" end of a PTY file descriptor by using the dentry cached by devpts. Since it is not possible to have an open master PTY without having its slave exposed in /dev/pts this interface is safe. This interface currently does not provide a way to get the master pty (since it is not clear whether such an interface is safe or even useful). 2017-05-10uapi: export all headers under uapi directoriesNicolas Dichtel1-23/+0
Regularly, when a new header is created in include/uapi/, the developer forgets to add it in the corresponding Kbuild file. This error is usually detected after the release is out. 2017-02-28kprobes: move kprobe declarations to asm-generic/kprobes.hLuis R. Rodriguez1-1/+4
Often all is needed is these small helpers, instead of compiler.h or a full kprobes.h. This is important for asm helpers, in fact even some asm/kprobes.h make use of these helpers... instead just keep a generic asm file with helpers useful for asm code with the least amount of clutter as possible. Likewise we need now to also address what to do about this file for both when architectures have CONFIG_HAVE_KPROBES, and when they do not. Then for when architectures have CONFIG_HAVE_KPROBES but have disabled CONFIG_KPROBES. Right now most asm/kprobes.h do not have guards against CONFIG_KPROBES, this means most architecture code cannot include asm/kprobes.h safely. Correct this and add guards for architectures missing them. Additionally provide architectures that not have kprobes support with the default asm-generic solution. This lets us force asm/kprobes.h on the header include/linux/kprobes.h always, but most importantly we can now safely include just asm/kprobes.h on architecture code without bringing the full kitchen sink of header files. Two architectures already provided a guard against CONFIG_KPROBES on its kprobes.h: sh, arch. The rest of the architectures needed gaurds added. We avoid including any not-needed headers on asm/kprobes.h unless kprobes have been enabled. In a subsequent atomic change we can try now to remove compiler.h from include/linux/kprobes.h. During this sweep I've also identified a few architectures defining a common macro needed for both kprobes and ftrace, that of the definition of the breakput instruction up. Some refer to this as BREAKPOINT_INSTRUCTION. This must be kept outside of the #ifdef CONFIG_KPROBES guard. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dledford/rdma Pull rdma DMA mapping updates from Doug Ledford: "Drop IB DMA mapping code and use core DMA code instead. Bart Van Assche noted that the ib DMA mapping code was significantly similar enough to the core DMA mapping code that with a few changes it was possible to remove the IB DMA mapping code entirely and switch the RDMA stack to use the core DMA mapping code. This resulted in a nice set of cleanups, but touched the entire tree and has been kept separate for that reason." * tag 'for-next-dma_ops' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dledford/rdma: (37 commits) IB/rxe, IB/rdmavt: Use dma_virt_ops instead of duplicating it IB/core: Remove ib_device.dma_device nvme-rdma: Switch from dma_device to dev.parent RDS: net: Switch from dma_device to dev.parent IB/srpt: Modify a debug statement IB/srp: Switch from dma_device to dev.parent IB/iser: Switch from dma_device to dev.parent IB/IPoIB: Switch from dma_device to dev.parent IB/rxe: Switch from dma_device to dev.parent IB/vmw_pvrdma: Switch from dma_device to dev.parent IB/usnic: Switch from dma_device to dev.parent IB/qib: Switch from dma_device to dev.parent IB/qedr: Switch from dma_device to dev.parent IB/ocrdma: Switch from dma_device to dev.parent IB/nes: Remove a superfluous assignment statement IB/mthca: Switch from dma_device to dev.parent IB/mlx5: Switch from dma_device to dev.parent IB/mlx4: Switch from dma_device to dev.parent IB/i40iw: Remove a superfluous assignment statement IB/hns: Switch from dma_device to dev.parent ...

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/paulg/linux Pull exception table module split from Paul Gortmaker: "Final extable.h related changes. This completes the separation of exception table content from the module.h header file. This is achieved with the final commit that removes the one line back compatible change that sourced extable.h into the module.h file. The commits are unchanged since January, with the exception of a couple Acks that came in for the last two commits a bit later. The changes have been in linux-next for quite some time[1] and have got widespread arch coverage via toolchains I have and also from additional ones the kbuild bot has. Maintaners of the various arch were Cc'd during the postings to lkml[2] and informed that the intention was to take the remaining arch specific changes and lump them together with the final two non-arch specific changes and submit for this merge window. The ia64 diffstat stands out and probably warrants a mention. In an earlier review, Al Viro made a valid comment that the original header separation of content left something to be desired, and that it get fixed as a part of this change, hence the larger diffstat" * tag 'extable-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/paulg/linux: (21 commits) module.h: remove extable.h include now users have migrated core: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h cris: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h hexagon: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h microblaze: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h unicore32: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h score: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h metag: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h arc: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h nios2: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h sparc: migrate exception table users onto extable.h openrisc: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h frv: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h sh: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h xtensa: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h mn10300: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h alpha: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h arm: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h m32r: migrate exception table users off module.h and onto extable.h ia64: ensure exception table search users include extable.h ...
2017-02-01sched/cputime: Remove generic asm headersFrederic Weisbecker1-1/+0
cputime_t is now only used by two architectures: * powerpc (when CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING_NATIVE=y) * s390 And since the core doesn't use it anymore, we don't need any arch support from the others. So we can remove their stub implementations. A final cleanup would be to provide an efficient pure arch implementation of cputime_to_nsec() for s390 and powerpc and finally remove include/linux/cputime.h .
