2006-11-01[POWERPC] Make alignment exception always check exception tableBenjamin Herrenschmidt1-8/+10
The alignment exception used to only check the exception table for -EFAULT, not for other errors. That opens an oops window if we can coerce the kernel into getting an alignment exception for other reasons in what would normally be a user-protected accessor, which can be done via some of the futex ops. 2006-10-25[POWERPC] Support feature fixups in vdso'sBenjamin Herrenschmidt1-1/+1
This patch reworks the feature fixup mecanism so vdso's can be fixed up. The main issue was that the construct: .long label (or .llong on 64 bits) will not work in the case of a shared library like the vdso. It will generate an empty placeholder in the fixup table along with a reloc, which is not something we can deal with in the vdso. The idea here (thanks Alan Modra !) is to instead use something like: 1: .long label - 1b That is, the feature fixup tables no longer contain addresses of bits of code to patch, but offsets of such code from the fixup table entry itself. That is properly resolved by ld when building the .so's. I've modified the fixup mecanism generically to use that method for the rest of the kernel as well. Another trick is that the 32 bits vDSO included in the 64 bits kernel need to have a table in the 64 bits format. However, gas does not support 32 bits code with a statement of the form: .llong label - 1b (Or even just .llong label) That is, it cannot emit the right fixup/relocation for the linker to use to assign a 32 bits address to an .llong field. Thus, in the specific case of the 32 bits vdso built as part of the 64 bits kernel, we are using a modified macro that generates: .long 0xffffffff .llong label - 1b Note that is assumes that the value is negative which is enforced by the .lds (those offsets are always negative as the .text is always before the fixup table and gas doesn't support emiting the reloc the other way around). 2006-10-25[POWERPC] Consolidate feature fixup codeBenjamin Herrenschmidt2-78/+6
There are currently two versions of the functions for applying the feature fixups, one for CPU features and one for firmware features. In addition, they are both in assembly and with separate implementations for 32 and 64 bits. identify_cpu() is also implemented in assembly and separately for 32 and 64 bits. This patch replaces them with a pair of C functions. The call sites are slightly moved on ppc64 as well to be called from C instead of from assembly, though it's a very small change, and thus shouldn't cause any problem. 2006-10-11[PATCH] mm: use symbolic names instead of indices for zone initialisationMel Gorman1-3/+4
Arch-independent zone-sizing is using indices instead of symbolic names to offset within an array related to zones (max_zone_pfns). The unintended impact is that ZONE_DMA and ZONE_NORMAL is initialised on powerpc instead of ZONE_DMA and ZONE_HIGHMEM when CONFIG_HIGHMEM is set. As a result, the the machine fails to boot but will boot with CONFIG_HIGHMEM turned off. The following patch properly initialises the max_zone_pfns[] array and uses symbolic names instead of indices in each architecture using arch-independent zone-sizing. Two users have successfully booted their powerpcs with it (one an ibook G4). It has also been boot tested on x86, x86_64, ppc64 and ia64. Please merge for 2.6.19-rc2. Credit to Benjamin Herrenschmidt for identifying the bug and rolling the first fix. Additional credit to Johannes Berg and Andreas Schwab for reporting the problem and testing on powerpc. 2006-10-02[PATCH] provide kernel_execve on all architecturesArnd Bergmann1-11/+7
This adds the new kernel_execve function on all architectures that were using _syscall3() to implement execve. The implementation uses code from the _syscall3 macros provided in the unistd.h header file. I don't have cross-compilers for any of these architectures, so the patch is untested with the exception of i386. Most architectures can probably implement this in a nicer way in assembly or by combining it with the sys_execve implementation itself, but this should do it for now. 2006-10-02[PATCH] const struct tty_operationsJeff Dike1-1/+1
As part of an SMP cleanliness pass over UML, I consted a bunch of structures in order to not have to document their locking. One of these structures was a struct tty_operations. In order to const it in UML without introducing compiler complaints, the declaration of tty_set_operations needs to be changed, and then all of its callers need to be fixed. This patch declares all struct tty_operations in the tree as const. In all cases, they are static and used only as input to tty_set_operations. As an extra check, I ran an i386 allyesconfig build which produced no extra warnings. 53 drivers are affected. I checked the history of a bunch of them, and in most cases, there have been only a handful of maintenance changes in the last six months. serial_core.c was the busiest one that I looked at. With 2.6.18-rc4-mm2, now wall_jiffies will always be the same as jiffies. So we can kill wall_jiffies completely. This is just a cleanup and logically should not change any real behavior except for one thing: RTC updating code in (old) ppc and xtensa use a condition "jiffies - wall_jiffies == 1". This condition is never met so I suppose it is just a bug. I just remove that condition only instead of kill the whole "if" block. Pass ticks to do_timer() and update_times(), and adjust x86_64 and s390 timer interrupt handler with this change. Currently update_times() calculates ticks by "jiffies - wall_jiffies", but callers of do_timer() should know how many ticks to update. Passing ticks get rid of this redundant calculation. Also there are another redundancy pointed out by Martin Schwidefsky. This cleanup make a barrier added by 5aee405c662ca644980c184774277fc6d0769a84 needless. So this patch removes it. As a bonus, this cleanup make wall_jiffies can be removed easily, since now wall_jiffies is always synced with jiffies. (This patch does not really remove wall_jiffies. 2006-09-29[PATCH] pidspace: is_init()Sukadev Bhattiprolu2-2/+2
This is an updated version of Eric Biederman's is_init() patch. (http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/2/6/280). It applies cleanly to 2.6.18-rc3 and replaces a few more instances of ->pid == 1 with is_init(). Further, is_init() checks pid and thus removes dependency on Eric's other patches for now. Eric's original description: There are a lot of places in the kernel where we test for init because we give it special properties. Most significantly init must not die. This results in code all over the kernel test ->pid == 1. Introduce is_init to capture this case. 2006-09-29[PATCH] make PROT_WRITE imply PROT_READJason Baron1-1/+1
Make PROT_WRITE imply PROT_READ for a number of architectures which don't support write only in hardware. While looking at this, I noticed that some architectures which do not support write only mappings already take the exact same approach. For example, in arch/alpha/mm/fault.c: " if (cause < 0) { if (!(vma->vm_flags & VM_EXEC)) goto bad_area; } else if (!cause) { /* Allow reads even for write-only mappings */ if (!(vma->vm_flags & (VM_READ | VM_WRITE))) goto bad_area; } else { if (!(vma->vm_flags & VM_WRITE)) goto bad_area; } " Thus, this patch brings other architectures which do not support write only mappings in-line and consistent with the rest. I've verified the patch on ia64, x86_64 and x86. Additional discussion: Several architectures, including x86, can not support write-only mappings. The pte for x86 reserves a single bit for protection and its two states are read only or read/write. Thus, write only is not supported in h/w. Currently, if i 'mmap' a page write-only, the first read attempt on that page creates a page fault and will SEGV. That check is enforced in arch/blah/mm/fault.c. However, if i first write that page it will fault in and the pte will be set to read/write. Thus, any subsequent reads to the page will succeed. It is this inconsistency in behavior that this patch is attempting to address. Furthermore, if the page is swapped out, and then brought back the first read will also cause a SEGV. Thus, any arbitrary read on a page can potentially result in a SEGV. According to the SuSv3 spec, "if the application requests only PROT_WRITE, the implementation may also allow read access." Also as mentioned, some archtectures, such as alpha, shown above already take the approach that i am suggesting. The counter-argument to this raised by Arjan, is that the kernel is enforcing the write only mapping the best it can given the h/w limitations. This is true, however Alan Cox, and myself would argue that the inconsitency in behavior, that is applications can sometimes work/sometimes fails is highly undesireable. Eran Ben-Avi <eranpublic@yahoo.com> pointed out that the arch/ppc version of smp_generic_take_timebase disables interrupts on entry but exits without restoring them. However, both it and the arch/powerpc version have another problem, which is that they use local_irq_disable/enable rather than local_irq_save/restore, and they are called with interrupts disabled. 2006-08-01[PATCH] vDSO hash-style fixRoland McGrath1-0/+1
The latest toolchains can produce a new ELF section in DSOs and dynamically-linked executables. The new section ".gnu.hash" replaces ".hash", and allows for more efficient runtime symbol lookups by the dynamic linker. The new ld option --hash-style={sysv|gnu|both} controls whether to produce the old ".hash", the new ".gnu.hash", or both. In some new systems such as Fedora Core 6, gcc by default passes --hash-style=gnu to the linker, so that a standard invocation of "gcc -shared" results in producing a DSO with only ".gnu.hash". The new ".gnu.hash" sections need to be dealt with the same way as ".hash" sections in all respects; only the dynamic linker cares about their contents. To work with older dynamic linkers (i.e. preexisting releases of glibc), a binary must have the old ".hash" section. The --hash-style=both option produces binaries that a new dynamic linker can use more efficiently, but an old dynamic linker can still handle. The new section runs afoul of the custom linker scripts used to build vDSO images for the kernel. On ia64, the failure mode for this is a boot-time panic because the vDSO's PT_IA_64_UNWIND segment winds up ill-formed. This patch addresses the problem in two ways. First, it mentions ".gnu.hash" in all the linker scripts alongside ".hash". This produces correct vDSO images with --hash-style=sysv (or old tools), with --hash-style=gnu, or with --hash-style=both. Second, it passes the --hash-style=sysv option when building the vDSO images, so that ".gnu.hash" is not actually produced. This is the most conservative choice for compatibility with any old userland. There is some concern that some ancient glibc builds (though not any known old production system) might choke on --hash-style=both binaries. The optimizations provided by the new style of hash section do not really matter for a DSO with a tiny number of symbols, as the vDSO has. If someone wants to use =gnu or =both for their vDSO builds and worry less about that compatibility, just change the option and the linker script changes will make any choice work fine. 2006-07-11[PATCH] tty: Remove include of screen_info.h from tty.hJon Smirl3-3/+3
screen_info.h doesn't have anything to do with the tty layer and shouldn't be included by tty.h. This patches removes the include and modifies all users to directly include screen_info.h. struct screen_info is mainly used to communicate with the console drivers in drivers/video/console. Note that this patch touches every arch and I have no way of testing it. If there is a mistake the worst thing that will happen is a compile error. include/linux/version.h contained both actual KERNEL version and UTS_RELEASE that contains a subset from git SHA1 for when kernel was compiled as part of a git repository. This had the unfortunate side-effect that all files including version.h would be recompiled when some git changes was made due to changes SHA1.
