2020-09-14vgacon: remove software scrollback supportLinus Torvalds2-2/+0
Yunhai Zhang recently fixed a VGA software scrollback bug in commit ebfdfeeae8c0 ("vgacon: Fix for missing check in scrollback handling"), but that then made people look more closely at some of this code, and there were more problems on the vgacon side, but also the fbcon software scrollback. We don't really have anybody who maintains this code - probably because nobody actually _uses_ it any more. Sure, people still use both VGA and the framebuffer consoles, but they are no longer the main user interfaces to the kernel, and haven't been for decades, so these kinds of extra features end up bitrotting and not really being used. So rather than try to maintain a likely unused set of code, I'll just aggressively remove it, and see if anybody even notices. Maybe there are people who haven't jumped on the whole GUI badnwagon yet, and think it's just a fad. And maybe those people use the scrollback code. If that turns out to be the case, we can resurrect this again, once we've found the sucker^Wmaintainer for it who actually uses it. 2020-05-28powerpc: Remove Xilinx PPC405/PPC440 supportMichal Simek4-165/+0
The latest Xilinx design tools called ISE and EDK has been released in October 2013. New tool doesn't support any PPC405/PPC440 new designs. These platforms are no longer supported and tested. PowerPC 405/440 port is orphan from 2013 by commit cdeb89943bfc ("MAINTAINERS: Fix incorrect status tag") and commit 19624236cce1 ("MAINTAINERS: Update Grant's email address and maintainership") that's why it is time to remove the support fot these platforms. 2020-05-26powerpc/8xx: Drop CONFIG_8xx_COPYBACK optionChristophe Leroy5-5/+0
CONFIG_8xx_COPYBACK was there to help disabling copyback cache mode for debuging hardware. But nobody will design new boards with 8xx now. All 8xx platforms select it, so make it the default and remove the option. Also remove the Mx_RESETVAL values which are pretty useless and hide the real value while reading code. 2020-02-24scsi: sr: remove references to BLK_DEV_SR_VENDOR, leave it enabledDiego Elio Pettenò13-13/+0
This kernel configuration is basically enabling/disabling sr driver quirks detection. While these quirks are for fairly rare devices (very old CD burners, and a glucometer), the additional detection of these models is a very minimal amount of code. The logic behind the quirks is always built into the sr driver. This also removes the config from all the defconfig files that are enabling this already. Since the need for a special flag to support SCSI passthrough on a block device was added in May 2017 the SCSI passthrough support in virtio-blk has been disabled. It has always been a bad idea (just ask the original author..) and we have virtio-scsi for proper passthrough. The feature also never made it into the virtio 1.0 or later specifications. The IOSCHED_DEADLINE was replaced by MQ_IOSCHED_DEADLINE and it will be now enabled by default (along with MQ_IOSCHED_KYBER). 2020-01-31powerpc/configs/skiroot: Enable some more hardening optionsMichael Ellerman1-0/+8
Enable more hardening options. Note BUG_ON_DATA_CORRUPTION selects DEBUG_LIST and is essentially just a synonym for it. DEBUG_SG, DEBUG_NOTIFIERS, DEBUG_LIST, DEBUG_CREDENTIALS and SCHED_STACK_END_CHECK should all be low overhead and just add a few extra checks. SLAB_FREELIST_RANDOM, and SLUB_DEBUG_ON will add some overhead to the SLAB allocator, but nothing that should be meaningful for skiroot. Unselecting SLAB_MERGE_DEFAULT causes the SLAB to use more memory, but the skiroot kernel shouldn't be memory constrained on any of our systems, all it does is run a small bootloader. Disabling merging has some security/robustness benefit as it means a user-after-free or overflow will be limited to the objects in that slab, rather than potentially affecting objects from unrelated slabs that have been merged. Note also that slab merging is disabled anyway by enabling SLUB_DEBUG_ON, because of the SLAB_NEVER_MERGE mask. 2020-01-31powerpc/configs/skiroot: Disable xmon default & enable reboot on panicMichael Ellerman1-1/+2
If the skiroot kernel crashes we don't want it sitting at an xmon prompt forever. Instead it's more helpful to reboot and bring the boot loader back up, and if the crash was transient we can then boot successfully. Similarly if we panic we should reboot, with a short timeout in case someone is watching the console. This turns on HARDENED_USERCOPY with HARDENED_USERCOPY_PAGESPAN, and FORTIFY_SOURCE. It also enables SECURITY_LOCKDOWN_LSM with _EARLY and LOCK_DOWN_KERNEL_FORCE_INTEGRITY options enabled. This still allows xmon to be used in read-only mode. MODULE_SIG is selected by lockdown, so it is still enabled. Because we're setting LOCK_DOWN_KERNELFORCE_INTEGRITY=y we also need to enable KEXEC_FILE=y so that kexec continues to work. Commit bdd08fff4915 ("HID: logitech: Add depends on LEDS_CLASS to Logitech Kconfig entry") made HID_LOGITECH depend on LEDS_CLASS which we do not enable, meaning we are not actually enabling those drivers any more. The Kconfig help text suggests USB HID compliant Logictech devices will continue to work without HID_LOGITECH, so just drop it. It sounds like the device is obsolete, so drop the driver. This system call has been deprecated almost since it was introduced, and in a survey of the linux distributions I can no longer find any of them that enable CONFIG_SYSCTL_SYSCALL. The only indication that I can find that anyone might care is that a few of the defconfigs in the kernel enable CONFIG_SYSCTL_SYSCALL. However this appears in only 31 of 414 defconfigs in the kernel, so I suspect this symbols presence is simply because it is harmless to include rather than because it is necessary. As there appear to be no users of the sysctl system call, remove the code. As this removes one of the few uses of the internal kernel mount of proc I hope this allows for even more simplifications of the proc filesystem. There is a config item CONFIG_SIMPLE_GPIO which provides simple memory mapped GPIOs specific to powerpc. However, the only platform which selects this option is mpc5200, and this platform doesn't use it. There are three boards calling simple_gpiochip_init(), but as they don't select CONFIG_SIMPLE_GPIO, this is just a nop. Simple_gpio is just redundant with the generic MMIO GPIO driver which can be found in driver/gpio/ and selected via CONFIG_GPIO_GENERIC_PLATFORM, so drop simple_gpio driver. We have several "defconfigs" that are not actually full defconfigs they are just a base set of options which are then merged with other fragments to produce a working defconfig. The most obvious example is corenet_basic_defconfig which only contains one symbol CONFIG_CORENET_GENERIC=y. And in fact if you build it as a "defconfig" that one symbol ends up undefined, because its prerequisites are missing. There is also mpc85xx_base_defconfig which doesn't actually enable CONFIG_PPC_85xx. To avoid confusion, rename these config fragments to "foo_base.config" to make it clearer that they are not full defconfigs and are instaed just fragments that are used to generate real defconfigs. While reviewing lockdown patches, I discovered that we still enable /dev/port (CONFIG_DEVPORT) in skiroot. /dev/port is used for old x86 style IO accesses. It's set up in drivers/char/mem.c, and is only created if arch_has_dev_port() returns true. Per arch/powerpc/include/asm/io.h, on PPC64 with PCI, this is only true if there's a legacy ISA bridge. Even if a system has a legacy ISA bridge installed, we have no business accessing it in skiroot. Deselect CONFIG_DEVPORT for skiroot. SCOM_DEBUGFS is really not needed for anything other than low-level hardware debugging. mpe: It also introduces a large and poorly documented/understood attack surface. Although the interface is only available to root, the kernel still aspires to restrict root to accessing hardware through well defined interfaces, which this is not. opal-prd uses its own interface (/dev/prd) for SCOM access, so it doesn't need SCOM_DEBUGFS. At some point in the future we'll introduce a debug config fragment where this can go instead. Only some samples actually include uapi headers from usr/include. Introduce CONFIG_HEADERS_INSTALL since 'depends on HEADERS_INSTALL' is clearer than 'depends on !UML'. If this option is enabled, uapi headers are installed before starting directory descending. I added 'depends on HEADERS_INSTALL' to per-sample CONFIG options.
