2011-01-26console: rename acquire/release_console_sem() to console_lock/unlock()Torben Hohn1-2/+2
The -rt patches change the console_semaphore to console_mutex. As a result, a quite large chunk of the patches changes all acquire/release_console_sem() to acquire/release_console_mutex() This commit makes things use more neutral function names which dont make implications about the underlying lock. The only real change is the return value of console_trylock which is inverted from try_acquire_console_sem() This patch also paves the way to switching console_sem from a semaphore to a mutex. 2011-01-21kconfig: rename CONFIG_EMBEDDED to CONFIG_EXPERTDavid Rientjes2-2/+2
The meaning of CONFIG_EMBEDDED has long since been obsoleted; the option is used to configure any non-standard kernel with a much larger scope than only small devices. This patch renames the option to CONFIG_EXPERT in init/Kconfig and fixes references to the option throughout the kernel. A new CONFIG_EMBEDDED option is added that automatically selects CONFIG_EXPERT when enabled and can be used in the future to isolate options that should only be considered for embedded systems (RISC architectures, SLOB, etc). Calling the option "EXPERT" more accurately represents its intention: only expert users who understand the impact of the configuration changes they are making should enable it. 2011-01-15parisc: fix compile breakage caused by inlining maybe_mkwriteJames Bottomley1-1/+3
on Parisc, we have an include of linux/mm.h inside our asm/pgtable.h, so this patch commit 14fd403f2146f740942d78af4e0ee59396ad8eab Author: Andrea Arcangeli <aarcange@redhat.com> Date: Thu Jan 13 15:46:37 2011 -0800 thp: export maybe_mkwrite Causes us an unsatisfiable use of pte_mkwrite in linux/mm.h The fix is obviously not to include linux/mm.h in our pgtable.h, which unbreaks the build. 2011-01-15parisc : Remove broken line wrapping handling pdc_iodc_print()Guy Martin1-12/+1
Remove the broken line wrapping handling in pdc_iodc_print(). It is broken in 3 ways : - It doesn't keep track of the current screen position, it just assumes that the new buffer will be printed at the begining of the screen. - It doesn't take in account that non printable characters won't increase the current position on the screen. - And last but not least, it triggers a kernel panic if a backspace is the first char in the provided buffer : Backtrace: [<0000000040128ec4>] pdc_console_write+0x44/0x78 [<0000000040128f18>] pdc_console_tty_write+0x20/0x38 [<000000004032f1ac>] n_tty_write+0x2a4/0x550 [<000000004032b158>] tty_write+0x1e0/0x2d8 [<00000000401bb420>] vfs_write+0xb8/0x188 [<00000000401bb630>] sys_write+0x68/0xb8 [<0000000040104eb8>] syscall_exit+0x0/0x14 Most terminals handle the line wrapping just fine. 2010-12-04parisc: convert the rest of the irq handlers to simple/percpuJames Bottomley1-4/+1
The generic conversion eliminates the spurious no_ack and no_end routines, converts all the cascaded handlers to handle_simple_irq() and makes iosapic use a modified handle_percpu_irq() to become the same as the CPU irq's. This isn't an essential change, but it eliminates the mask/unmask overhead of handle_level_irq(). 2010-12-04parisc: fix dino/gsc interruptsJames Bottomley1-1/+1
The essential problem we're currently having is that dino (and gsc) is a cascaded CPU interrupt. Under the old __do_IRQ() handler, our CPU interrupts basically did an ack followed by an end. In the new scheme, we replaced them with level handlers which do a mask, an ack and then an unmask (but no end). Instead, with the renaming of end to eoi, we actually want to call the percpu flow handlers, because they actually have all the characteristics we want. This patch does the conversion and gets my C360 booting again. Signed-off-by: James Bottomley <James.Bottomley@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Kyle McMartin <kyle@mcmartin.ca>

2010-10-28parisc: fix compile failure with kmap_atomic changesJames Bottomley1-4/+4
Commit 3e4d3af501cc ("mm: stack based kmap_atomic()") overlooked the fact that parisc uses kmap as a coherence mechanism, so even though we have no highmem, we do need to supply our own versions of kmap (and atomic). 2010-10-18irq_work: Add generic hardirq context callbacksPeter Zijlstra2-2/+2
Provide a mechanism that allows running code in IRQ context. It is most useful for NMI code that needs to interact with the rest of the system -- like wakeup a task to drain buffers. Perf currently has such a mechanism, so extract that and provide it as a generic feature, independent of perf so that others may also benefit. The IRQ context callback is generated through self-IPIs where possible, or on architectures like powerpc the decrementer (the built-in timer facility) is set to generate an interrupt immediately. Architectures that don't have anything like this get to do with a callback from the timer tick. These architectures can call irq_work_run() at the tail of any IRQ handlers that might enqueue such work (like the perf IRQ handler) to avoid undue latencies in processing the work. 2010-10-07Fix IRQ flag handling namingDavid Howells2-18/+47
Fix the IRQ flag handling naming. In linux/irqflags.h under one configuration, it maps: local_irq_enable() -> raw_local_irq_enable() local_irq_disable() -> raw_local_irq_disable() local_irq_save() -> raw_local_irq_save() ... and under the other configuration, it maps: raw_local_irq_enable() -> local_irq_enable() raw_local_irq_disable() -> local_irq_disable() raw_local_irq_save() -> local_irq_save() ... This is quite confusing. There should be one set of names expected of the arch, and this should be wrapped to give another set of names that are expected by users of this facility. Change this to have the arch provide: flags = arch_local_save_flags() flags = arch_local_irq_save() arch_local_irq_restore(flags) arch_local_irq_disable() arch_local_irq_enable() arch_irqs_disabled_flags(flags) arch_irqs_disabled() arch_safe_halt() Then linux/irqflags.h wraps these to provide: raw_local_save_flags(flags) raw_local_irq_save(flags) raw_local_irq_restore(flags) raw_local_irq_disable() raw_local_irq_enable() raw_irqs_disabled_flags(flags) raw_irqs_disabled() raw_safe_halt() with type checking on the flags 'arguments', and then wraps those to provide: local_save_flags(flags) local_irq_save(flags) local_irq_restore(flags) local_irq_disable() local_irq_enable() irqs_disabled_flags(flags) irqs_disabled() safe_halt() with tracing included if enabled. 2010-10-05modules: Fix module_bug_list list corruption raceLinus Torvalds1-2/+1
With all the recent module loading cleanups, we've minimized the code that sits under module_mutex, fixing various deadlocks and making it possible to do most of the module loading in parallel. However, that whole conversion totally missed the rather obscure code that adds a new module to the list for BUG() handling. That code was doubly obscure because (a) the code itself lives in lib/bugs.c (for dubious reasons) and (b) it gets called from the architecture-specific "module_finalize()" rather than from generic code. Calling it from arch-specific code makes no sense what-so-ever to begin with, and is now actively wrong since that code isn't protected by the module loading lock any more. So this commit moves the "module_bug_{finalize,cleanup}()" calls away from the arch-specific code, and into the generic code - and in the process protects it with the module_mutex so that the list operations are now safe. Future fixups: - move the module list handling code into kernel/module.c where it belongs. - get rid of 'module_bug_list' and just use the regular list of modules (called 'modules' - imagine that) that we already create and maintain for other reasons. The existing compat_alloc_user_space() implementations are renamed arch_compat_alloc_user_space() and are used as part of the implementation of the new global function. This patch assumes NULL will cause __get_user()/__put_user() to either fail or access userspace on all architectures. This should be followed by checking the return value of compat_access_user_space() for NULL in the callers, at which time the access_ok() in the callers can also be removed. 2010-08-18Make do_execve() take a const filename pointerDavid Howells2-7/+14
Make do_execve() take a const filename pointer so that kernel_execve() compiles correctly on ARM: arch/arm/kernel/sys_arm.c:88: warning: passing argument 1 of 'do_execve' discards qualifiers from pointer target type This also requires the argv and envp arguments to be consted twice, once for the pointer array and once for the strings the array points to. This is because do_execve() passes a pointer to the filename (now const) to copy_strings_kernel(). A simpler alternative would be to cast the filename pointer in do_execve() when it's passed to copy_strings_kernel(). do_execve() may not change any of the strings it is passed as part of the argv or envp lists as they are some of them in .rodata, so marking these strings as const should be fine. Further kernel_execve() and sys_execve() need to be changed to match. This has been test built on x86_64, frv, arm and mips. 2010-08-11dma-mapping: remove dma_is_consistent APIFUJITA Tomonori1-6/+0
Architectures implement dma_is_consistent() in different ways (some misinterpret the definition of API in DMA-API.txt). So it hasn't been so useful for drivers. We have only one user of the API in tree. Unlikely out-of-tree drivers use the API. Even if we fix dma_is_consistent() in some architectures, it doesn't look useful at all. It was invented long ago for some old systems that can't allocate coherent memory at all. It's better to export only APIs that are definitely necessary for drivers. Let's remove this API. 2010-08-11dma-mapping: parisc: set ARCH_DMA_MINALIGNFUJITA Tomonori1-0/+2

2010-08-11dma-mapping: unify dma_get_cache_alignment implementationsFUJITA Tomonori1-6/+0
dma_get_cache_alignment returns the minimum DMA alignment. Architectures defines it as ARCH_DMA_MINALIGN (formally ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN). So we can unify dma_get_cache_alignment implementations. Note that some architectures implement dma_get_cache_alignment wrongly. dma_get_cache_alignment() should return the minimum DMA alignment. So fully-coherent architectures should return 1. This patch also fixes this issue. 2010-08-11tty: Add EXTPROC support for LINEMODEhyc@symas.com2-0/+3
This patch is against the 2.6.34 source. Paraphrased from the 1989 BSD patch by David Borman @ cray.com: These are the changes needed for the kernel to support LINEMODE in the server. There is a new bit in the termios local flag word, EXTPROC. When this bit is set, several aspects of the terminal driver are disabled. Input line editing, character echo, and mapping of signals are all disabled. This allows the telnetd to turn off these functions when in linemode, but still keep track of what state the user wants the terminal to be in. New ioctl: TIOCSIG Generate a signal to processes in the current process group of the pty. There is a new mode for packet driver, the TIOCPKT_IOCTL bit. When packet mode is turned on in the pty, and the EXTPROC bit is set, then whenever the state of the pty is changed, the next read on the master side of the pty will have the TIOCPKT_IOCTL bit set. This allows the process on the server side of the pty to know when the state of the terminal has changed; it can then issue the appropriate ioctl to retrieve the new state. Since the original BSD patches accompanied the source code for telnet I've left that reference here, but obviously the feature is useful for any remote terminal protocol, including ssh. The corresponding feature has existed in the BSD tty driver since 1989.
