git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "This has three changes for asm-generic that did not really fit into any other branch as normal asm-generic changes do. One is a fix for a build warning, the other two are more interesting: * A patch from Mark Brown to allow using the common clock infrastructure on all architectures, so we can use the clock API in architecture independent device drivers. * The UAPI split patches from David Howells for the asm-generic files. There are other architecture specific series that are going through the arch maintainer tree and that depend on this one. There may be a few small merge conflicts between Mark's patch and the following arch header file split patches. In each case the solution will be to keep the new "generic-y += clkdev.h" line, even if it ends up being the only line in the Kbuild file." * tag 'asm-generic' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic: UAPI: (Scripted) Disintegrate include/asm-generic asm-generic: Add default clkdev.h asm-generic: xor: mark static functions as __maybe_unused
2012-10-05cross-arch: don't corrupt personality flags upon exec()Jiri Kosina1-1/+2
Historically, the top three bytes of personality have been used for things such as ADDR_NO_RANDOMIZE, which made sense only for specific architectures. We now however have a flag there that is general no matter the architecture (UNAME26); generally we have to be careful to preserve the personality flags across exec(). This patch tries to fix all architectures that forcefully overwrite personality flags during exec() (ppc32 and s390 have been fixed recently by commits f9783ec862ea ("[S390] Do not clobber personality flags on exec") and 59e4c3a2fe9c ("powerpc/32: Don't clobber personality flags on exec") in a similar way already). 2012-10-03asm-generic: Add default clkdev.hMark Brown1-0/+1
Ease the deployment of clkdev by providing a default asm/clkdev.h for use if the arch does not have an include/asm/clkdev.h. Due to limitations in Kbuild we manually add clkdev.h to all architectures that don't have one rather than having the header appear by default. 2012-05-24Merge branch 'delete-mca' of ↵Linus Torvalds1-1/+0
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/paulg/linux Pull the MCA deletion branch from Paul Gortmaker: "It was good that we could support MCA machines back in the day, but realistically, nobody is using them anymore. They were mostly limited to 386-sx 16MHz CPU and some 486 class machines and never more than 64MB of RAM. Even the enthusiast hobbyist community seems to have dried up close to ten years ago, based on what you can find searching various websites dedicated to the relatively short lived hardware. So lets remove the support relating to CONFIG_MCA. There is no point carrying this forward, wasting cycles doing routine maintenance on it; wasting allyesconfig build time on validating it, wasting I/O on git grep'ping over it, and so on." Let's see if anybody screams. It generally has compiled, and James Bottomley pointed out that there was a MCA extension from NCR that allowed for up to 4GB of memory and PPro-class machines. So in *theory* there may be users out there. But even James (technically listed as a maintainer) doesn't actually have a system, and while Alan Cox claims to have a machine in his cellar that he offered to anybody who wants to take it off his hands, he didn't argue for keeping MCA support either. So we could bring it back. But somebody had better speak up and talk about how they have actually been using said MCA hardware with modern kernels for us to do that. And David already took the patch to delete all the networking driver code (commit a5e371f61ad3: "drivers/net: delete all code/drivers depending on CONFIG_MCA"). * 'delete-mca' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/paulg/linux: MCA: delete all remaining traces of microchannel bus support. scsi: delete the MCA specific drivers and driver code serial: delete the MCA specific 8250 support. arm: remove ability to select CONFIG_MCA

2012-05-18frv: delete incorrect task prototypes causing compile failPaul Gortmaker1-4/+0
Commit 41101809a865 ("fork: Provide weak arch_release_[task_struct| thread_info] functions") in -tip highlights a problem in the frv arch, where it has needles prototypes for alloc_task_struct_node and free_task_struct. This now shows up as: kernel/fork.c:120:66: error: static declaration of 'alloc_task_struct_node' follows non-static declaration kernel/fork.c:127:51: error: static declaration of 'free_task_struct' follows non-static declaration since that commit turned them into real functions. 2012-05-18MCA: delete all remaining traces of microchannel bus support.Paul Gortmaker1-1/+0
Hardware with MCA bus is limited to 386 and 486 class machines that are now 20+ years old and typically with less than 32MB of memory. A quick search on the internet, and you see that even the MCA hobbyist/enthusiast community has lost interest in the early 2000 era and never really even moved ahead from the 2.4 kernels to the 2.6 series. This deletes anything remaining related to CONFIG_MCA from core kernel code and from the x86 architecture. There is no point in carrying this any further into the future. One complication to watch for is inadvertently scooping up stuff relating to machine check, since there is overlap in the TLA name space (e.g. arch/x86/boot/mca.c). 2012-02-22sock: Introduce the SO_PEEK_OFF sock optionPavel Emelyanov1-0/+1
This one specifies where to start MSG_PEEK-ing queue data from. When set to negative value means that MSG_PEEK works as ususally -- peeks from the head of the queue always. When some bytes are peeked from queue and the peeking offset is non negative it is moved forward so that the next peek will return next portion of data. When non-peeking recvmsg occurs and the peeking offset is non negative is is moved backward so that the next peek will still peek the proper data (i.e. the one that would have been picked if there were no non peeking recv in between). The offset is set using per-proto opteration to let the protocol handle the locking issues and to check whether the peeking offset feature is supported by the protocol the socket belongs to. 2012-01-11Merge tag 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mst/vhostLinus Torvalds1-1/+1
lib: use generic pci_iomap on all architectures Many architectures don't want to pull in iomap.c, so they ended up duplicating pci_iomap from that file. That function isn't trivial, and we are going to modify it https://lkml.org/lkml/2011/11/14/183 so the duplication hurts. This reduces the scope of the problem significantly, by moving pci_iomap to a separate file and referencing that from all architectures. * tag 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mst/vhost: alpha: drop pci_iomap/pci_iounmap from pci-noop.c mn10300: switch to GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP mn10300: add missing __iomap markers frv: switch to GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP tile: switch to GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP tile: don't panic on iomap sparc: switch to GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP sh: switch to GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP powerpc: switch to GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP parisc: switch to GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP mips: switch to GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP microblaze: switch to GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP arm: switch to GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP alpha: switch to GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP lib: add GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP lib: move GENERIC_IOMAP to lib/Kconfig Fix up trivial conflicts due to changes nearby in arch/{m68k,score}/Kconfig

2011-12-21perf, arch: Rework perf_event_index()Peter Zijlstra1-2/+0
Put the logic to compute the event index into a per pmu method. This is required because the x86 rules are weird and wonderful and don't match the capabilities of the current scheme. AFAIK only powerpc actually has a usable userspace read of the PMCs but I'm not at all sure anybody actually used that. ARM is restored to the default since it currently does not support userspace access at all. And all software events are provided with a method that reports their index as 0 (disabled).
