2016-06-25tree wide: get rid of __GFP_REPEAT for order-0 allocations part IMichal Hocko1-2/+2
This is the third version of the patchset previously sent [1]. I have basically only rebased it on top of 4.7-rc1 tree and dropped "dm: get rid of superfluous gfp flags" which went through dm tree. I am sending it now because it is tree wide and chances for conflicts are reduced considerably when we want to target rc2. I plan to send the next step and rename the flag and move to a better semantic later during this release cycle so we will have a new semantic ready for 4.8 merge window hopefully. Motivation: While working on something unrelated I've checked the current usage of __GFP_REPEAT in the tree. It seems that a majority of the usage is and always has been bogus because __GFP_REPEAT has always been about costly high order allocations while we are using it for order-0 or very small orders very often. It seems that a big pile of them is just a copy&paste when a code has been adopted from one arch to another. I think it makes some sense to get rid of them because they are just making the semantic more unclear. Please note that GFP_REPEAT is documented as * __GFP_REPEAT: Try hard to allocate the memory, but the allocation attempt * _might_ fail. This depends upon the particular VM implementation. while !costly requests have basically nofail semantic. So one could reasonably expect that order-0 request with __GFP_REPEAT will not loop for ever. This is not implemented right now though. I would like to move on with __GFP_REPEAT and define a better semantic for it. $ git grep __GFP_REPEAT origin/master | wc -l 111 $ git grep __GFP_REPEAT | wc -l 36 So we are down to the third after this patch series. The remaining places really seem to be relying on __GFP_REPEAT due to large allocation requests. This still needs some double checking which I will do later after all the simple ones are sorted out. I am touching a lot of arch specific code here and I hope I got it right but as a matter of fact I even didn't compile test for some archs as I do not have cross compiler for them. Patches should be quite trivial to review for stupid compile mistakes though. The tricky parts are usually hidden by macro definitions and thats where I would appreciate help from arch maintainers. Yet we have the full kernel tree with its usage for apparently order-0 allocations. This is really confusing because __GFP_REPEAT is explicitly documented to allow allocation failures which is a weaker semantic than the current order-0 has (basically nofail). Let's simply drop __GFP_REPEAT from those places. This would allow to identify place which really need allocator to retry harder and formulate a more specific semantic for what the flag is supposed to do actually. 2016-05-21printk/nmi: generic solution for safe printk in NMIPetr Mladek1-0/+1
printk() takes some locks and could not be used a safe way in NMI context. The chance of a deadlock is real especially when printing stacks from all CPUs. This particular problem has been addressed on x86 by the commit a9edc8809328 ("x86/nmi: Perform a safe NMI stack trace on all CPUs"). The patchset brings two big advantages. First, it makes the NMI backtraces safe on all architectures for free. Second, it makes all NMI messages almost safe on all architectures (the temporary buffer is limited. We still should keep the number of messages in NMI context at minimum). Note that there already are several messages printed in NMI context: WARN_ON(in_nmi()), BUG_ON(in_nmi()), anything being printed out from MCE handlers. These are not easy to avoid. This patch reuses most of the code and makes it generic. It is useful for all messages and architectures that support NMI. The alternative printk_func is set when entering and is reseted when leaving NMI context. It queues IRQ work to copy the messages into the main ring buffer in a safe context. __printk_nmi_flush() copies all available messages and reset the buffer. Then we could use a simple cmpxchg operations to get synchronized with writers. There is also used a spinlock to get synchronized with other flushers. We do not longer use seq_buf because it depends on external lock. It would be hard to make all supported operations safe for a lockless use. It would be confusing and error prone to make only some operations safe. The code is put into separate printk/nmi.c as suggested by Steven Rostedt. It needs a per-CPU buffer and is compiled only on architectures that call nmi_enter(). This is achieved by the new HAVE_NMI Kconfig flag. The are MN10300 and Xtensa architectures. We need to clean up NMI handling there first. Let's do it separately. This means that if the hardware has registers to configure open drain or open source configuration, we use that rather than (as we did before) try to emulate it by switching the line to an input to get high impedance. This is also documented throughly in Documentation/gpio/driver.txt for those of you who did not understand one word of what I just wrote. - Start to do away with the unnecessarily complex and unitelligible ARCH_REQUIRE_GPIOLIB and ARCH_WANT_OPTIONAL_GPIOLIB, another evolutional artifact from the time when the GPIO subsystem was unmaintained. Archs can now just select GPIOLIB and be done with it, cleanups to arches will trickle in for the next kernel. Some minor archs ACKed the changes immediately so these are included in this pull request. - Advancing the use of the data pointer inside the GPIO device for storing driver data by switching the PowerPC, Super-H Unicore and a few other subarches or subsystem drivers in ALSA SoC, Input, serial, SSB, staging etc to use it. - The initialization now reads the input/output state of the GPIO lines, so that each GPIO descriptor knows - if this callback is implemented - whether the line is input or output. This also reflects nicely in userspace "lsgpio". - It is now possible to name GPIO producer names, line names, from the device tree. (Platform data has been supported for a while). I bet we will get a similar mechanism for ACPI one of those days. This makes is possible to get sensible producer names for e.g. GPIO rails in "lsgpio" in userspace. New drivers: - New driver for the Loongson1. - The XLP driver now supports Broadcom Vulcan ARM64. - The IT87 driver now supports IT8620 and IT8628. - The PCA953X driver now supports Galileo Gen2. Driver improvements: - MCP23S08 was switched to use the gpiolib irqchip helpers and now also suppors level-triggered interrupts. - 74x164 and RCAR now supports the .set_multiple() callback - AMDPT was converted to use generic GPIO. - TC3589x, TPS65218, SX150X, F7188X, MENZ127, VX855, WM831X, WM8994 support the new single ended callback for open drain and in some cases open source. - Implement the .get_direction() callback for a few more drivers like PL061, Xgene. Cleanups: - Paul Gortmaker combed through the drivers and de-modularized those who are not really modules. - Move the GPIO poweroff DT bindings to the power subdir where they belong. - Rename gpio-generic.c to gpio-mmio.c, which is much more to the point. There's a background article at LWN.net: https://lwn.net/Articles/643797/ The gist is that protection keys allow the encoding of user-controllable permission masks in the pte. So instead of having a fixed protection mask in the pte (which needs a system call to change and works on a per page basis), the user can map a (handful of) protection mask variants and can change the masks runtime relatively cheaply, without having to change every single page in the affected virtual memory range. This allows the dynamic switching of the protection bits of large amounts of virtual memory, via user-space instructions. It also allows more precise control of MMU permission bits: for example the executable bit is separate from the read bit (see more about that below). This tree adds the MM infrastructure and low level x86 glue needed for that, plus it adds a high level API to make use of protection keys - if a user-space application calls: mmap(..., PROT_EXEC); or mprotect(ptr, sz, PROT_EXEC); (note PROT_EXEC-only, without PROT_READ/WRITE), the kernel will notice this special case, and will set a special protection key on this memory range. It also sets the appropriate bits in the Protection Keys User Rights (PKRU) register so that the memory becomes unreadable and unwritable. So using protection keys the kernel is able to implement 'true' PROT_EXEC on x86 CPUs: without protection keys PROT_EXEC implies PROT_READ as well. Unreadable executable mappings have security advantages: they cannot be read via information leaks to figure out ASLR details, nor can they be scanned for ROP gadgets - and they cannot be used by exploits for data purposes either. We know about no user-space code that relies on pure PROT_EXEC mappings today, but binary loaders could start making use of this new feature to map binaries and libraries in a more secure fashion. There is other pending pkeys work that offers more high level system call APIs to manage protection keys - but those are not part of this pull request. Right now there's a Kconfig that controls this feature (CONFIG_X86_INTEL_MEMORY_PROTECTION_KEYS) that is default enabled (like most x86 CPU feature enablement code that has no runtime overhead), but it's not user-configurable at the moment. 2016-03-14ipv4: Update parameters for csum_tcpudp_magic to their original typesAlexander Duyck3-6/+5
This patch updates all instances of csum_tcpudp_magic and csum_tcpudp_nofold to reflect the types that are usually used as the source inputs. For example the protocol field is populated based on nexthdr which is actually an unsigned 8 bit value. The length is usually populated based on skb->len which is an unsigned integer. This addresses an issue in which the IPv6 function csum_ipv6_magic was generating a checksum using the full 32b of skb->len while csum_tcpudp_magic was only using the lower 16 bits. As a result we could run into issues when attempting to adjust the checksum as there was no protocol agnostic way to update it. With this change the value is still truncated as many architectures use "(len + proto) << 8", however this truncation only occurs for values greater than 16776960 in length and as such is unlikely to occur as we stop the inner headers at ~64K in size. I did have to make a few minor changes in the arm, mn10300, nios2, and score versions of the function in order to support these changes as they were either using things such as an OR to combine the protocol and length, or were using ntohs to convert the length which would have truncated the value. I also updated a few spots in terms of whitespace and type differences for the addresses. Most of this was just to make sure all of the definitions were in sync going forward. We will soon modify the vanilla get_user_pages() so it can no longer be used on mm/tasks other than 'current/current->mm', which is by far the most common way it is called. For now, we allow the old-style calls, but warn when they are used. (implemented in previous patch) This patch switches all callers of: get_user_pages() get_user_pages_unlocked() get_user_pages_locked() to stop passing tsk/mm so they will no longer see the warnings. Chris sent this during the merge window, but I waffled back and forth on the pull request, which is why it's going in only now. The new "strscpy()" function is definitely easier to use and more secure than either strncpy() or strlcpy(), both of which are horrible nasty interfaces that have serious and irredeemable problems. strncpy() has a useless return value, and doesn't NUL-terminate an overlong result. To make matters worse, it pads a short result with zeroes, which is a performance disaster if you have big buffers. strlcpy(), by contrast, is a mis-designed "fix" for strlcpy(), lacking the insane NUL padding, but having a differently broken return value which returns the original length of the source string. Which means that it will read characters past the count from the source buffer, and you have to trust the source to be properly terminated. It also makes error handling fragile, since the test for overflow is unnecessarily subtle. strscpy() avoids both these problems, guaranteeing the NUL termination (but not excessive padding) if the destination size wasn't zero, and making the overflow condition very obvious by returning -E2BIG. It also doesn't read past the size of the source, and can thus be used for untrusted source data too. So why did I waffle about this for so long? Every time we introduce a new-and-improved interface, people start doing these interminable series of trivial conversion patches. And every time that happens, somebody does some silly mistake, and the conversion patch to the improved interface actually makes things worse. Because the patch is mindnumbing and trivial, nobody has the attention span to look at it carefully, and it's usually done over large swatches of source code which means that not every conversion gets tested. So I'm pulling the strscpy() support because it *is* a better interface. But I will refuse to pull mindless conversion patches.
