2007-03-29[PATCH] MSI-X: fix resume crashEric W. Biederman1-1/+3
So I think the right solution is to simply make pci_enable_device just flip enable bits and move the rest of the work someplace else. However a thorough cleanup is a little extreme for this point in the release cycle, so I think a quick hack that makes the code not stomp the irq when msi irq's are enabled should be the first fix. Then we can later make the code not change the irqs at all. Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2007-02-12[PATCH] mark struct file_operations const 2Arjan van de Ven11-11/+11
Many struct file_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential dirty data. In addition it'll catch accidental writes at compile time to these shared resources. 2007-02-11[PATCH] optional ZONE_DMA: introduce CONFIG_ZONE_DMAChristoph Lameter1-0/+4
This patch simply defines CONFIG_ZONE_DMA for all arches. We later do special things with CONFIG_ZONE_DMA after the VM and an arch are prepared to work without ZONE_DMA. CONFIG_ZONE_DMA can be defined in two ways depending on how an architecture handles ISA DMA. First if CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA is set by the arch then we know that the arch needs ZONE_DMA because ISA DMA devices are supported. We can catch this in mm/Kconfig and do not need to modify arch code. Second, arches may use ZONE_DMA in an unknown way. We set CONFIG_ZONE_DMA for all arches that do not set CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA in order to insure backwards compatibility. The arches may later undefine ZONE_DMA if their arch code has been verified to not depend on ZONE_DMA. 2007-01-12[PATCH] Change cpu_up and co from __devinit to __cpuinitGautham R Shenoy1-1/+1
Compiling the kernel with CONFIG_HOTPLUG = y and CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU = n with CONFIG_RELOCATABLE = y generates the following modpost warnings WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141b7d) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141b9c) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.text:__cpu_up from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141bd8) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141c05) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141c26) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141c37) and 'cpu_up' This is because cpu_up, _cpu_up and __cpu_up (in some architectures) are defined as __devinit AND __cpu_up calls some __cpuinit functions. Since __cpuinit would map to __init with this kind of a configuration, we get a .text refering .init.data warning. This patch solves the problem by converting all of __cpu_up, _cpu_up and cpu_up from __devinit to __cpuinit. The approach is justified since the callers of cpu_up are either dependent on CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU or are of __init type. Thus when CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU=y, all these cpu up functions would land up in .text section, and when CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU=n, all these functions would land up in .init section. Tested on a i386 SMP machine running linux-2.6.20-rc3-mm1. 2006-12-08[PATCH] LOG2: Implement a general integer log2 facility in the kernelDavid Howells1-0/+8
This facility provides three entry points: ilog2() Log base 2 of unsigned long ilog2_u32() Log base 2 of u32 ilog2_u64() Log base 2 of u64 These facilities can either be used inside functions on dynamic data: int do_something(long q) { ...; y = ilog2(x) ...; } Or can be used to statically initialise global variables with constant values: unsigned n = ilog2(27); When performing static initialisation, the compiler will report "error: initializer element is not constant" if asked to take a log of zero or of something not reducible to a constant. They treat negative numbers as unsigned. When not dealing with a constant, they fall back to using fls() which permits them to use arch-specific log calculation instructions - such as BSR on x86/x86_64 or SCAN on FRV - if available. 2006-10-01[PATCH] kill wall_jiffiesAtsushi Nemoto1-7/+0
With 2.6.18-rc4-mm2, now wall_jiffies will always be the same as jiffies. So we can kill wall_jiffies completely. This is just a cleanup and logically should not change any real behavior except for one thing: RTC updating code in (old) ppc and xtensa use a condition "jiffies - wall_jiffies == 1". This condition is never met so I suppose it is just a bug. I just remove that condition only instead of kill the whole "if" block. 2006-09-29[PATCH] simplify update_times (avoid jiffies/jiffies_64 aliasing problem)Atsushi Nemoto2-2/+2
Pass ticks to do_timer() and update_times(), and adjust x86_64 and s390 timer interrupt handler with this change. Currently update_times() calculates ticks by "jiffies - wall_jiffies", but callers of do_timer() should know how many ticks to update. Passing ticks get rid of this redundant calculation. Also there are another redundancy pointed out by Martin Schwidefsky. This cleanup make a barrier added by 5aee405c662ca644980c184774277fc6d0769a84 needless. So this patch removes it. As a bonus, this cleanup make wall_jiffies can be removed easily, since now wall_jiffies is always synced with jiffies. (This patch does not really remove wall_jiffies. It would be another cleanup patch) Signed-off-by: Atsushi Nemoto <anemo@mba.ocn.ne.jp> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Cc: "Eric W. 2006-06-29[PATCH] genirq: cleanup: turn ARCH_HAS_IRQ_PER_CPU into CONFIG_IRQ_PER_CPUIngo Molnar1-0/+4

2006-06-29[PATCH] genirq: rename desc->handler to desc->chipIngo Molnar3-3/+3
This patch-queue improves the generic IRQ layer to be truly generic, by adding various abstractions and features to it, without impacting existing functionality. While the queue can be best described as "fix and improve everything in the generic IRQ layer that we could think of", and thus it consists of many smaller features and lots of cleanups, the one feature that stands out most is the new 'irq chip' abstraction. The irq-chip abstraction is about describing and coding and IRQ controller driver by mapping its raw hardware capabilities [and quirks, if needed] in a straightforward way, without having to think about "IRQ flow" (level/edge/etc.) type of details. This stands in contrast with the current 'irq-type' model of genirq architectures, which 'mixes' raw hardware capabilities with 'flow' details. The patchset supports both types of irq controller designs at once, and converts i386 and x86_64 to the new irq-chip design. As a bonus side-effect of the irq-chip approach, chained interrupt controllers (master/slave PIC constructs, etc.) are now supported by design as well. The end result of this patchset intends to be simpler architecture-level code and more consolidation between architectures. We reused many bits of code and many concepts from Russell King's ARM IRQ layer, the merging of which was one of the motivations for this patchset. This patch: rename desc->handler to desc->chip. Originally i did not want to do this, because it's a big patch. But having both "desc->handler", "desc->handle_irq" and "action->handler" caused a large degree of confusion and made the code appear alot less clean than it truly is. I have also attempted a dual approach as well by introducing a desc->chip alias - but that just wasnt robust enough and broke frequently. So lets get over with this quickly. The conversion was done automatically via scripts and converts all the code in the kernel. This renaming patch is the first one amongst the patches, so that the remaining patches can stay flexible and can be merged and split up without having some big monolithic patch act as a merge barrier. 2006-06-27[PATCH] 64bit resource: change pci core and arch code to use resource_size_tGreg Kroah-Hartman1-2/+2

2006-06-26[PATCH] devfs: Rename TTY_DRIVER_NO_DEVFS to TTY_DRIVER_DYNAMIC_DEVGreg Kroah-Hartman2-2/+2
I've always found this flag confusing. Now that devfs is no longer around, it has been renamed, and the documentation for when this flag should be used has been updated. Also fixes all drivers that use this flag. Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
2006-06-25[PATCH] mm: remove VM_LOCKED before remap_pfn_range and drop VM_SHMChristoph Lameter1-2/+0
Remove VM_LOCKED before remap_pfn range from device drivers and get rid of VM_SHM. remap_pfn_range() already sets VM_IO. There is no need to set VM_SHM since it does nothing. VM_LOCKED is of no use since the remap_pfn_range does not place pages on the LRU. The pages are therefore never subject to swap anyways. Remove all the vm_flags settings before calling remap_pfn_range. After removing all the vm_flag settings no use of VM_SHM is left. Drop it. 2006-04-11[PATCH] No arch-specific strpbrk implementationsKyle McMartin1-1/+0
While cleaning up parisc_ksyms.c earlier, I noticed that strpbrk wasn't being exported from lib/string.c. Investigating further, I noticed a changeset that removed its export and added it to _ksyms.c on a few more architectures. The justification was that "other arches do it." I think this is wrong, since no architecture currently defines __HAVE_ARCH_STRPBRK, there's no reason for any of them to be exporting it themselves. Therefore, consolidate the export to lib/string.c. 2006-03-27[PATCH] unify PFN_* macrosDave Hansen1-4/+1
Just about every architecture defines some macros to do operations on pfns. They're all virtually identical. This patch consolidates all of them. One minor glitch is that at least i386 uses them in a very skeletal header file. To keep away from #include dependency hell, I stuck the new definitions in a new, isolated header. Of all of the implementations, sh64 is the only one that varied by a bit. It used some masks to ensure that any sign-extension got ripped away before the arithmetic is done. This has been posted to that sh64 maintainers and the development list. Compiles on x86, x86_64, ia64 and ppc64. 2006-03-24[PATCH] set_page_dirty() return value fixesAndrew Morton1-1/+1
We need set_page_dirty() to return true if it actually transitioned the page from a clean to dirty state. This wasn't right in a couple of places. Do a kernel-wide audit, fix things up. This leaves open the possibility of returning a negative errno from set_page_dirty() sometime in the future. But we don't do that at present. 2006-03-24[PATCH] kill include/linux/platform.h, default_idle() cleanupAdrian Bunk1-2/+1
include/linux/platform.h contained nothing that was actually used except the default_idle() prototype, and is therefore removed by this patch. This patch does the following with the platform specific default_idle() functions on different architectures: - remove the unused function: - parisc - sparc64 - make the needlessly global function static: - arm - h8300 - m68k - m68knommu - s390 - v850 - x86_64 - add a prototype in asm/system.h: - cris - i386 - ia64 Signed-off-by: Adrian Bunk <bunk@stusta.de> Acked-by: Patrick Mochel <mochel@digitalimplant.org> Acked-by: Kyle McMartin <kyle@parisc-linux.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2006-03-23[PATCH] more for_each_cpu() conversionsAndrew Morton1-6/+4
When we stop allocating percpu memory for not-possible CPUs we must not touch the percpu data for not-possible CPUs at all. The correct way of doing this is to test cpu_possible() or to use for_each_cpu(). This patch is a kernel-wide sweep of all instances of NR_CPUS. I found very few instances of this bug, if any. But the patch converts lots of open-coded test to use the preferred helper macros. 2006-03-22[PATCH] remove set_page_count() outside mm/Nick Piggin1-1/+1
set_page_count usage outside mm/ is limited to setting the refcount to 1. Remove set_page_count from outside mm/, and replace those users with init_page_count() and set_page_refcounted(). This allows more debug checking, and tighter control on how code is allowed to play around with page->_count.
